In this video I discuss some of the hidden history behind Paris is Burning. The Icons I talk about are Hector Xtravaganza, Jose, Luis David Ian, David Depino and Danny Xtravaganza, Miss Pucci Revlon, Paris Dupree, Anthony Dupree, and Dorian Corey.
I discuss the history of vogue performance, ballroom history and key achievements of these icons. They have extended their talents beyond the ballroom and into mainstream culture, working with huge megastars such as Lil Kim, SWV and Madonna. Their influence has even extended beyond this to modern day pop stars such as Rihanna and Beyoncé. With shows such as Pose FX and HBO’s Legendary achieving heights of success, we must give flowers to those who paved the way.

It's pretty sad we will never know much about many of them. They made history without even being aware of it. I wish I had a full interview with everyone who used to be on the ballroom scene back them. I wished interviews were made with those who are in the ballroom scene right now as well. Amazing work you did here!

HI my name is Lenny I was part of the whole scene...i was not a voguer but just part of the whole piers/go to a ball/clubbing scene. I remember still the night they told us about Venus everyone was crying...i forgot who came screaming running down the pier that they found Venus dead but anyways thats how I found out. We were all shocked but we went to the club names the World anyways...and danced all night..yep thats how it was....wanted to say you know all these guys died of Aids you should not be ashamed to say it..I myself am also positive and yes from going into cars on the piers lol. But thanks for the memories...sometimes i still go down there and walk on the piers and as I look i can see the dirt, garbage hear the music and the wonderful people in my head it feels so real. ok bye! btw did you ever get your trans surgery? Cheerio ! thats what you guys say right? or is it Captain Crunch? I forget
I learned of Venus a handful of years ago, and I think of her often. Poor baby just wanted love. In a better world, she'd have settled down and had the entire white picket fence fantasy life. 💖

I knew more than half the people in Paris is Burning , this was like a flashback to my youth !! Although my experience with these individuals were ALL miserable af and SUPER NEGATIVE, it was nice to feel young ( er 😂 ) again ! Great tribute

I felt the same way. I knew many people in this video, and this was a big part of my youth. It's hard to watch this since so many have passed. I'm sure their looking down proud at how big this scene has gotten. It's helped become more acceptable. Which is always good.

I really appreciate your content. It's so important to preserve this history and you are definitely doing your part, hon. I recently watched Pose FX and I recognized Jose Xtravaganza in the Vogue episode at the end, dancing with Pray Tell, but I didn't know who he was until you showed him and told his story here. This history of a horribly marginalized people is so inspiring and beautiful. I'm the mama of a trans guy and, although we're white, he needs to understand this beautiful culture that exists which has brought a raw realness and impactful importance to all LGBTQ people. Without it, the up-and-coming LGBTQ and especially the trans generations wouldn't be able to have their voices heard. Bless you hon and I wish you well on your transition. I sure hope that the UK will get their heads out of their asses and help you all be your amazing real selves soon. Much love. 💕🌈

Thank you for this. It was really good and very nice of you to pay Homage to some faces that never got any recognition. You also shared a few pics I hadn't seen before especially the one of Ian Xtravaganza fixing Venus hair on the subway. I was sitting right across from Venus & Ian on the number 2 train heading up to harlem. Venus had put to much gel on the side of her hair and Ian was fixing it for her. We had just left the Garage and went straight to a ball. Those were some fun times. I really miss them two. Ian was my Gay mother. Summer of 1985 if I'm not mistaken. I paused the video and took a screen shot to have my own pic. I forget who it was with us taking the pictures. I wish I can remember that. Oh well it was the 1980's. LMFAO 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣. Some of the best years of my life.

@@princessamani That is very sweet of you to say. We were all so young and having so much fun. I'm shocked at how much the ball scene has blown up. There are literally Houses forming or formed already in many different countries. It is amazing never thought we were possibly starting a trend. I'm not really involved in the scene today since many of my old friends have passed its not the same for me but it's great to see new kids have come out and are keeping the tradition going. I stay in touch with some of the original members but that's about it. I will accept your friendship on Facebook and discuss doing an interview. Thanks again for your kind words! 😊 👍❤

Hector xtravaganza was Fierce he was beautiful and very nice guy when I first met Hector xtravaganza at uncle Charles by st Vincent hospital my friend Ed dare me to kiss him I did and he kissed me back and not only that he afford me his fur mini jacket with mixed colors it was Beautiful sexy fierce I told him no I don’t need a fur pa and kept on take it I told him no how the hell will you get home Hector he say’s don’t worry about me I told him I worry about you I don’t need for you too get sick on my Account someone else would have taken the colorful jacket I didn’t I wasn’t interested in material things
