OK what, you’re telling me that we get them cheaper here? Granted the street value is not even close to what they’re imported for but still. And what I mean by this is that I paid $6500 for mine, the guy who bought it from JDI bought it for $4000. It came with a set of green furniture along with the Swiss issue quad rails (relatively rare stateside) spare mag ($65 from jdi, $200+ street price) and black pistol grip + stock. Funny enough the scalping only applies to the ones people want, 553r (7.62x39), 553 nato (ar mag), 553 blackout (300 black out) and even lots of base 550s are listed on gunbroker for a very reasonable price yet people can’t justify paying it because it’s still $4000 for a rifle when an AR (mid range mil spec) is $800-$1500 at very most. I mean this is just the way it works, however I really wish out of all the ones that ended up in the country were most of them aren’t desirable. San Swiss seems to fail to realize that people are only willing to pay all this money because it’s a collectors item, not actually because it’s a good rifle. Don’t get me wrong I love my 553 commando, but I wouldn’t of bought it especially for the price I paid if it wasn’t a commando. A good amount of 550 series rifles that are even on our market have the wrong twist rate. You may take offense to me saying that the Swiss barrel twist rate is wrong, it’s actually the right one, only for the Swiss though. It is impossible to justify buying these rifles to be used practically as there is so much risk when it comes to buying them. They are sold in a bunch of different variations some of which are very valuable (arguably priceless) and others useless.

      @@rainman2222
Service men can have their service 550s transferred into their possession for a small fee (afaik CHF 150); a weapon purchase permit still must be obtained tough. These ex-military 550s will be semi-auto only (burst and full-auto will be removed). These used 550s go for around CHF 1500 in gun shops; the quality will of course greatly vary, because remember: they were used in the military, and some of them are in a really rough shape.
Prices for a new 55x pattern rifle in Switzerland:
      PE90 (Privat Einzelfeuer 90)/550: CHF 3480
      551: CHF 3935
      553: CHF 3495
      553R: CHF 3695
      553BK: CHF 3890
      750LB (6.5 Creedmore): CHF 4050
      751 SAPR (7.62x51): CHF 4050
      For comparison:
ex-military 510: from CHF 400 (again, some of them can be in a rough shape)
      overhauled 510: from CHF 1500
competition ready 510: from CHF 3000 (new diopter, new free floating precision barrel etc.)
      new B&T APC556 with a 16.5” barrel: CHF 3500
new Ruger AR-556 MPR with a 18” barrel: CHF 1500
new FN SCAR 16: CHF 3890
new CZ Bren 2 with 16.5” barrel: CHF 2890
The reason why the SIG rifles are so imensly popular in Switzerland isn't only because they can be acquired cheap from the army after service (not that many people do this), but also because for the official 300m shooting competitions subsidized by the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, only few types of rifles are allowed:
      550
      510
      K31
      K11
      Langewehr 11

@@slavepusher Are your prices in USD, Swiss francs or Euros? Those prices look close to what we pay here if not a little on the high side. The exception being the FN scar which is at least $400-$500 more stateside, but a Ruger Ar-556 is considerably cheaper (probably because it is made here and doesn't need to imported).
Like I said in my previous comment most of these imported guns are collectors items, most people don't shoot them as they are hard to replace/service and it is far cheaper/safer to just use some cheap shitter AR if you are actually trying to shoot

Hi, Swiss Army Officer here. I wanted to make a little comment about the caliber of our duty rifle which I hope you'll find interesting. In the video you mentioned that our duty rifle (SIG550) is chambered in 5.56mm. This isn't entirely correct: in fact, our duty cartridge (called GP90) is not a 5.56mm, but a 5.6mm (5.69mm). Even if it's entirely compatible with the 5.56mm round, the 5.6mm round is arguably heavier and slower, which improve flying stability. That's why our duty rifle have a 1:10 twist, while the export versions have a 1:7 twist optimised for 5.56mm. ;)
Side note: if you take out the bottom portion of the hand grip, you'll find a screw to tune the trigger. You'll get a tremendously good 2 stage trigger this way. Hope this helps!

A little late to the party here but the safety works once you get the theory.
Take your grip, flip the safety OFF with your thumb, insert some Swiss freedom downrange, then flip the safety ON with the part of your hand between your thumb and index finger, kind of the back of that knuckle, by just rolling up and off the grip just a wee bit. You never really have to take your hand fully off to run it. Try it a few times it will make sense.

As a former Swiss military member and sport shooter which have a sig 550 and allot of other similar rifles I have to say it is a good gun. It is accurat, has a good trigger (for a service rifle), it is very reliable and durable but it is a bit heavy due to the heavy and long barrel. So I prefer a high end AR or the Sig MCX over this rifle. But if we take in consideration how old this rifle in this specific CONFIGURATION already is I have to say it is one of the nicest and best rifels of this type produced during this time period.

Nice vid, regarding slings I think you’re wrong. I’m Swiss and used the 550 in the army. We attached a loop of 550cord on the front of the rifle metal loop, then we knoted the 550 cord to a metal hook at the front end of the sling . the other end of the sling was hooked into a plastic loop (metal reinfoerced) of the buttstock either through the loop or with another 550cord loop n zip ties on the buttstock. That was the extended way to use the sling while shooting or behind your back to quickly stow it. To shorten the sling, we unhooked it from the buttstock n hooked it in at the diopter, which is the short version. We had a belt clip on the sling to further shorten it in the non deployed 3rd version as in vehicles or in the gun racks either at the end of your bed at the barracks or in corridors.

    • @williamhedrick7983
      @williamhedrick7983 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They are probably some of the finest barrels ever produced… I agree chrome lining makes them more durable and helps smooth over imperfections in the machining process.
Just like HK SiG uses a phosphate or nitride treatment.
All of the barrel blanks are sourced from either
      Hammerli
      Blaser
      W+ Bern
      SAN
All are turned / profiled in house.
