    Great review. I love seeing TH-cam channels I am subscribed to review a gun that is made somewhat local to me. I work at the scrap yard that Stealth Arms brings all of there leftover steel and aluminum shavings from the machining process to. They actually take all of the money they get back from scrapping the shavings and donate it to charity. Everybody who I have met from Stealth Arms is very nice and easy going. I met the owner for the first time just the other day and he is a really cool guy. He personally shoots each Platypus before they ship it out to make sure they work the way they should. I have had my Platypus for about a year now and I love it. I am still looking into the best holster options for it.

    Never heard of your channel other than mentions on Instagram; saw this video in recommended by chance (crazy I know) and you gained a new subscriber in me purely by being the first "influencer/guntuber" to accurately name what a 2011 is.
    As far as the review: love it. More or less my same takeaway, but that's also nice seeing someone comparing guns by class of gun and its accessories/features rather than "this gun is ok I guess but my Staccato XC shoots better". The complaint I have of the Platypus is actually in its full teardown and I mean ALL the way down. I'm a gunsmith by trade, I like to do my own tuning, so I got my Platy with the basic trigger and my concerns are interesting. I do not like that the trigger bow and shoe are all one piece machined aluminum unlike a 2011/1911 bow being a stamped steel flat with a shoe that's threaded or pinned onto it. The trigger bar cover piece in the back being ball detented is cool but it's very fragile when removed as it's also one piece with a very thin bar of aluminum linking the two ends. My last criticism is the safety itself. It's a keyed lock safety, which is a superior design to the classic STI/Staccato "friction wedge and blade" lock safety, but the area below the safety has a tendency to pinch the webbing of my hand if I get too aggressive with my grip, as well as I'd like a shielded safety option as I also tend to pinch my guns. My Atlas, Dan Wesson, and STI guns rock shielded safeties for this reason, but because the Platy uses an uncommon style of safety I'm stuck with it's factory ambi rather than being able to swap in a shielded safety.
    (I *could* modify an Atlas shielded safety to work in this gun with extensive modification but then it wouldn't match the style of my Platy that is tastefully styled as a Nerf blaster)

  • @dougo753
    @dougo753 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I love my 2311 and I don't know why. It does not shoot as well as my Staccato P in side-by-side drills, heck it does nothing better than my optics-equipped HK VP9. Also saving $30 a magazine when you are buying multiple $2,000+ pistols these days seems like a rounding error more than a selling point but I'll be darned if I don't just enjoy it and sometimes that's enough. I've had my eye on the platypus for a while now and you just convinced me to get one because after all it doesn't have to be "either-or", it can be "all of them". Total side note but I just bought an HCAR and that thing is completely impractical but runs great and is a TON of fun!

    I ordered my Platy in April and it shipped in September. I am blown away by the fit/finish. I only have 100ish rounds through it so far but has been flawless. I went with a "Stormtrooper" color scheme and it came out beautifully. As soon as they start offering the frame in steel I will order another one for competition. Good Stuff!

    • @CompetitionChris
      @CompetitionChris หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If they ever do it'll probably be $1,000 more. It's easy to make a steel frame for a 2011. It's hard to make a steel grip. That's why there's not a lot of people actually making steel grip 2011 grip modules. I would imagine that a one piece frame and grip made out of steel would be a shit ton of machine time. They could do it. But I guarantee it'll be an extra $1,000. And if it is around $3,000 then you got to decide if it's worth it to get the platypus over in actual 2011. I was in the same predicament as you. I bought the platypus and used it in competition. But realized it was too light. So I ended up ordering a masterpiece Arms DS9 for limited optics. Couldn't be happier. I still use my platy for two gun but it's just not the same

    • @ManleyArts
      @ManleyArts หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CompetitionChris Oh yah, probably. The thing is this gun just runs and the fact that the mags are cheap and reliable means I can beat the snot out of it with little worry. As Jake mentioned 2011 mags can be a PITA and they definitely are not cheap. For a competition specific gun I want that sucker to run hard. I feel like this platform will do it. I would definitely spec out an aluminum frame for a duty gun, I think it would be awesome in that role.

    The one consistent thing with utube presenters. Presumed level of knowledge. I would be reasonably confident that this is 45 caliber. But, it was not said or written anywhere I could find. This presumed level of knowledge isn't bad here. In radio control fix wing and drone flying programing it is brutal. Same issue with the diy auto repair. Give us the lowest level data. If we know it already it will simply slip by. If we don't it will be appreciated. Great video , It left me with the ability to contemplate the Platypus and decide if it was what I wanted

    Good Review! I liked how you distinguished between a custom pistol and a customizable pistol. The Platy is definitely customizable 😎
    I have two of the Platypus pistols, one bull barrel and one bushing barrel. Love to shoot them! My bushing gun came with a ~4lb trigger and it has worn in after 800+ rounds to 3.5 lbs. The bull barrel gun came in at ~2.75lbs and has gotten a wee bit lighter with use. These guns are not on the same level as an Infinity or one of the other >$5000 pistols that are being offered, but the differences are not ( to me ) worth the extra expense. I have a Bul Armory EDC 4.25" that actually cost a bit more than either Platy but really is not as comfortable to shoot or as accurate ( in my hands ). A better shooter might be able to make the EDC run better but it is just a tad behind the Stealth Arms pistols in my opinion. Fusion Firearms is now offering a double stack 9MM that uses G17 mags and I would be willing to bet that other manufacturers are working on designs right now. Alpha Foxtrot came out with a G17 fed 1911 as well, but I don't know if they were the first or if they came after Stealth Arms. Either way, the market is getting crowded with good DS1911-style pistols and we ( the consumers ) are the winner!

Just saw one that came apart at the frame near the beaver tail and not sure if anodizing would’ve made a difference or not. Just a thought.

      Tisas has a DS 1911 for $700 that I’ve not seen one bad word about so far. So those of course are all excellent options but if you’re truly wanting to “dip a toe” I might consider that. I’d say those are pretty much just a full dive in 😂😂.

    • @CompetitionChris
      @CompetitionChris หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Dipping your toes in isn't a great plan for 2011 imo. I love my platypus but as soon as I got it I realized it was just too light and ended up buying a Masterpiece Arms DS9. Steel frame, steel grip. If I could do it all over I would have not got the platypus as much as I like it. It just doesn't even compare to a hand fitted hand lapped gun that's less than $4,000. But I'm also thinking about this in a strictly competition use. And I definitely agree with you about the staccato. They're not that great. They have shitty triggers and they aren't even close as butter smooth as my MPA. The slide literally feels like it's on bearings. It's amazing

      I have both a Platy 5" and a BUL Tac 5" (not the Pro). The BUL is my Limited Optics gun for now. It is excellent for the price point though I'm forcing a tactical/duty gun to do race-gun work. I would definitely recommend both but there are better competition specific pistols out there, you're just gonna pay alot more.

    Regarding the comments on the OA 2311, I see why you might say that (not being different enough... or cheap enough... or being left behind), but I disagree. You mentioned wanting a pinned grip safety on the Platypus - the 2311 eschews the grip safety altogether. The 2311 uses an external extractor (like Staccato), better for long term reliability. The 2311 has a polymer grip module, allowing for aftermarket modification to suit the shooter. The 2311 uses a linkless barrel, eliminating a possible point of failure. It also has an ambi slide release (not sure how common that is on any 1911/2011). The 2311 has standard, ambi thumb ledges (not just textured indexing points). Saying that the market has moved past the 2311 is a tad... shortsighted... IMO. That said, I love what Stealth Arms is doing with the Platypus and plan to get one as soon as the wait times come down a bit.

One of my favorite hi cap form factors for the 1911. Came out around 1992ish. The only problem Caspian had was magazines and each gun had to be custom built on their frame. Did the the platypus get a decent price increase since it was released? $2200 is getting into staccato/bul armory territory. For that price i think i rather have the new tac comp for not much more. Btw platypus should 💯 add a ported slide and barrel from factory.

    How’d they get the trigger bow around the Glock mag? Isn’t that the whole reason that those magazines haven’t been used in the past because they are double stack all the way to the top? And standard 2011 magazines go from double stack to single stack in the area of the trigger bow?
    Is the platypus really a better choice than a G17/34?
    Seems like it’s kind of taking a good magazine out of a good pistol and putting said good magazine in an unreliable pistol for the small sake of a slightly better trigger.

    After handling tons of guns this year. I feel very confident that for the 2k price range the Dan Wesson DWX. I’d pick it over a stacatto and today I got to shoot a watchtower 2011, nit sure the model but I’d had a comp and was extremely extremely nice. That would be my 3k choice for sure. But since I still have a kids, and a wife, my budget will probably start with a MAC or Tissas. I’ve also been a CZ/Beretta/Sig2XX fan. I enjoy my 1911’s but single stack is so much reloading for competition. I only carry a 1911 for backwoods and hunting protection in 10mm. I’m going to have to present a new gun budget to the finance committee for this year, last years budget will not alllow me to acquire the equipment I need to protect my home and family in case of super fast ninjas attack and I need a high capacity super accurate pistol that I can shoot super fast. And I’ll need more than one, two is one and one is none, plus additional options for comparing, we want to make sure we choose the proper pistols for defense against aliens, ninjas, and the occasional ninja turtle. If the committee tries to shut down the new budget I’m am prepared to remind them that since I’ve taken over as defense we have had zero altercations with tigers, monitor lizards, Sasquatch, great white sharks, man eating anacondas, mma trained kangaroos among many other serious threats we men face and keep away every day.

    I've had my platypus for almost a year. I shot limited optics in USPSA for about 6 months with it until I got my Masterpiece Arms DS9. It's a great gun. It's just not a good gun if you're the kind of guy that likes to upgrade components over time. It shoots 100% reliable. But for competition, it just doesn't compare to my 53 oz DS9. Mostly because of how light it is. If they came out with a steel frame version it would be insanely better. But I'm looking at it strictly in the competition sense. For a range gun it is good to go. And for people bitching about 2011 mags, buy MBX mags. I've got close to 10,000 rounds through my DS9 with zero malfunctions.
