Like in any high value hobby, there are going to be scammers out there that try and part you from your hard earned money. For this reason I have decided to purchase a handful of high quality phoney numismatic and bullion coins to start a series on how to avoid buying them and losing money. What would have helped this video a lot is if you have the actual coin that is a match to the fake and point out what makes the fake different from the real coin, that would really help.

Haha what would have made all us silver fans more knowledgeable would be to know what is real and what to look for, an not what is obviously fake! I don't get it. Ahem yeah, like it would've been possible for him to hold the mythical "genuine" 1 troy oz 1965 Peace Dollar in his own hands. Did you not hear what he said? No such thing actually exists to the best of our knowledge. And if it actually did which he was incredibly able to hold in his own hands, just such 1 single coin would cost millions & millions of dollars.

I sat next to a couple of Treasury agents when traveling to Hong Kong back in 1995. Obviously there were problems then. Later, when working in China, I knew a guy who really knew his stuff collecting stamps. Even he was fooled occasionally. Caveat emptor!

I can understand if you're from a previous era, when this sort of thing was very rare and easy to spot.
This is 2019, not 1975. The technology has radically improved, much more sophisticated material being produced, and China is very different than what it was in the 70s.
I'm somewhat surprised that you weren't up to date on this sort of thing, it's pretty much common knowledge these days. Of course, that's where their market is, looking for people of an earlier time that they are still living in.

    • @AudiophileTubes

@@SynthoidSounds Frankly, despite the longevity of one of my hobbies (I have several others), no I have not been 'up to date' on spotting current era fakes. These days, I am a caretaker to not one, but two family members who are 'special needs', and i'm exhausted mentally and physically. I wish I had more time to devote to all this. Maybe one day....

You might have not noticed it because unless you handle old coin all the time there are things that stick out. Most notability the finish the edges are to perfectly aged, next is the actual face of the coin it is to perfect for the age and appearance (they are trying to sell you a coin that has been in circulation) if it was actually a real coin the polished head should be a give away as well as the tarnish is ONLY on the edges FRONT and BACK, that alone to an avid collector would make me walk away and call the cops for selling fake money I recommend anyone new to buying coins buy from a BBB rated company or at least a commercial company. Also like I do if I am shopping in a place I do not know or trust TAKE EITHER AN ELECTRIC SCALE or a MECHANICAL SCALE you trust. NO REAL COLLECTOR or metal dealer will ever not allow you to weigh the coin. If it is not within a gram or two of the book stated weight or the dealer refuses to let you weigh it RUN DON'T WALK AWAY it is a fake and they know it. Good hunting and have fun

@@Silverpicker We sell a little on eBay. Most of our business is done with our normal clients (who as most in the stamp & coin business are slowly dying off) and at trade shows. I just got back from a show in South Bend, IN. We also have a lot of referrals.
Sadly, this is probably the last generation for the business. My brother's children don't want any part of it and neither my sister nor I have children and have our own careers. I've been working in Asia since 2003 and came home when my brother became very. He's fine & I'm so out of here :).
By 1791, my family had been established jewelers for the Polish and French courts. Obviously we didn't have much business in France after 1789. The family moved from Krakow to Warsaw shortly before the 1st partition. The business was basically incorporated (not officially, but as close as they came in the late 1700s in Eastern Europe in 1791 in what our family thought would be our new home. And more partitions came.
A friend of the family, Michelle d'Ivry, French but moved to Sweden leaving her husband to be with the court jeweler of Sweden Sutzer. Turns out she couldn't get divorced, became a spy, sponsored (at least) 19 of my family members to Sweden and died TWO months after they arrived! The family was not very successful in Sweden (being Jewish) and moved to friendlier waters- England.
Fast forward to 1852, my great grandfather arrived in NYC, opening a currency exchange. After the great fire in Chicago, many found financial opportunities in the rebuilding of the city. My great grandfather and grand father became money lenders while still carrying on trade in coins & bullion and eventually stamps (ugh!).
My father owned the coin/paper money department in a large local department store. It's odd to think you could walk into a Nordstrom's and buy Gold Eagles on credit. My father died early. The inventory was split among my brother sister & I (I was 10). When my trust came up, I sold my portion to my brother and moved to England for school. I attended the same Temple my family did back in late 1700s!
And here we are. I can't imagine what my father and further ancestors would think about buying and selling coins electronically and getting them across the world in 2 days, or Bitcoin, which I still am trying to figure out.
If you're ever in Bambam, Tarlac, Philippines, stop in the war museum. We donated one of every known guerrilla currency known to the museum. Or stop into the The Jewish Association of the Philippines, where we donated one of ever Israeli stamps and some exumonia.
Thank you for the great videos and keep em coming!

My coin shop guy is old school, cash paid, no records, just a walk in and walk out type place....alot of these would fool him, just cuz he goes through and buys so much silver, especially from me. I would never ruin a friendship like that.

I just saw a 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter on Ebay. Luckily they put replica in the description but not in the title and it had the old wear look like VG or F. I wanted to buy it just to get a fake to compare. Scary stuff. Def keep an eye open. Great video.

I'm only a few months into numismatics, but I remember going to a night market in Vientiane, Laos years ago, right alongside the Meakong River, and there were (too) many people with "silver" American coins. They looked alot like that Morgan, but I knew right away that the color was off and not real silver. All of them!

That Ben Franklin with the toning shook me! The rest - I would have known off the bat, although if the Morgan had been a different year, it could have gotten me as well.
The rest are pretty horrid fakes, but I've also been doing this since the mid-80's. A new guy, eager to jump in headfirst could very easily get fooled by many of these!

Hi, new to the channel. Really really enjoyed the video. I have looked at all those coins and bars on Wishdotcom and said they HAD to be too good to be true.
Only other comment---would really enjoy seeing you cut open the bar or one of the coins, or melt it, to see how much or little actual silver is in the coin/bar.

Ok, so what shiny silvery metal do you think coats the outside of the rounds and the bar?
Very curious here, have never seen a fake exposed live before!!!

Most coins purchased are in 2X2’s or capsules which makes it easy to get taken. The Franklin, Walking Lib and the American Eagle in a 2X2 to me would look the most realistic.

6:28 I was going to say it looks like someone bought a bunch of copper Aztec Calendar coins from Provident Metals, and is selling them for a markup on Wish. However, the coins from Provident have way more detail to them than that.

  • @HughesEnterprises
    @HughesEnterprises 4 ปีที่แล้ว

This is why I buy Cull grade Morgan’s/Peace dollars. Nobody’s faking 1921-D Morgan’s or 1922-P Peace dollars with half the detail left from honest circulation or ugly tarnish and scratches.
