With the magnet test you're supposed to slide the coin across the magnet at a 45 degree angle, a real silver coin will slide slowly With some resistance, a fake, even if not magnetic will slide without any resistance quickly.

Copper is also slides slowly, so this test only to find fakes, not real ones

Very informative video! Only thing is, at the end when you're discussing the 1888-CC Morgan, you speak about it as if that date/mintmark actually exists. No Carson City Morgans were minted that year. So we know it's a fake--even without the tests! 🙂

Great Video, here in the British Commonwealth world, we collect a lot of coins that were 50% silver between 1920 and 1947, would these coins react to magnets, as they often had 40% copper and also trace amounts of Nickel and Zinc. Also South African and Canadian coins were 80% silver and many Copper Nickel coins of post 1947 are worth lots in top condition, how would magnets react to these.

I think that a good lesson to explain is from where to buy has to be from a Reputable seller to begin with.! If it is not Graded, I would be Leary. I only buy bullion from a reputable dealer.
Another thing is to show what a neodymium magnet looks like on Real Silver...
Also,, instead of a caliper test if the weight and magnetism doesn't set you off, I would go with a chemical test before I would think about a caliper test,,

Great video! It is unfortunate that anyone would try and scam anyone with fake coins. I was at a local Los Angeles Flea market, and found some of these coins. They were so real looking and the seller was selling them as real for $3 each. I told him I knew they were not real and I asked that he stop selling them to people acting as if they were real. Not sure if he will actually change his practice, but I did try.

Also, is it illegal for these coins to even be in the USA ? I always thought to be 'legal', they have to have the word "COPY" stamped into them so that people do not mistake them for the genuine coin.

Now you know why you always hear stories of ships being found with thousands of gold and silver coins. Gold and silver is worth more when made into old coins. In days gone by there was very little done to prevent counterfeiting because it was either real gold/silver or it wasnt they did not think people would make copies of the coin 150 years later.

Cool informing everyone. most dont look at description listed where some of the stuff they do say what really made of and not intended for anything other then for prop usages. May be new to coin collecting but have collected various things on off from Comic Books, Graphic Novels still have those, Non Sport & Sport Cards, Gaming Cards, Action Figures, etc and always did research if wasn't sure. Most just see what they think is something of value and buy just like most think every coin without mint mark is thousands of dollars rare, they forget or unaware that its Philadelphia if No Mint Mark unless noted like 1965, 66, & 67 No Mint Marks from any Mint when collectors blamed for coin storage or in rare case mint mark wasnt added when people actually did them by hand. Still Awesome to keep anyone collecting whatever it may be aware of the dangers of buying in person, mail, online, etc. Thanks. B

China has been allowed to copy and fake everything from aftermarket car parts to gold and silver coins. They know our government will do nothing so they continue to do it.
