Coin Shop Owner Shows Easy Gold Testing Trick - Avoid FAKE GOLD EAGLES

- In this video I visit a coin shop and the coins shop owner shows an easy gold testing trick to avoid fake gold eagles. Fake gold eagles usually come from China and can be hard to detect if you do not know how to test gold coins. This coin dealer uses sound to find fake gold eagle coins. A fake American gold eagle coin will have a different sound compared to a real gold eagle coin. There are many fake gold bars and fake gold coins out there so you need to protect yourself. We test 4 different goin eagle coins from the 1 oz all the way down to the 1/10 oz searching for fake gold eagles. The larger 1 oz gold eagle coins are the easiest to test and easiest to sort out the fake American gold eagle coins as well. We do test a gold Krugerrand coin, but we did not find any fake gold Krugerrands. When it comes to fake gold vs real gold, the fake gold coins will have a different sound. This fake gold coin test is extremely easy to do. The fake 1/10 oz gold eagle coins will be the hardest to detect. Counterfeit gold eagle coins are a crime. I hope this video helps you to find any fake gold eagles before you purchase them!

It was fun seeing the toners. I love the down to earth info too. Testing your metals is essential and I doubt everyone does it. Hopefully somebody puts this info to use. Thanks!

love the security features on the britannia.
Unfortunately they’re tied to socialist countries.

Lol. I bought a fully magnetic “Maple Leaf.”
what are the security features?
I started purchasing gold when it was $350ish ! A old timer turned me on it changed my life. I rooled the dice with my savings and haven’t stopped iam 76 now and it’s my turn on a young person…..😅

You happen to know the frequencies for Ag Eagles & constitutional silver pieces (or if there is a site listing various issues)? Thanks for sharing some great and useful info as always; got to keep us 🐉 out of trouble by avoiding any "wooden nickels" so to speak. I imagine many of us in the liberty-movement, when we see someone in Portland (OR), we wonder how they can live there. But Harry's is in a suburb of Portland. I'd like to know how you find conditions in general there Dragon.
Great information for anyone buying from anything than a reputable dealer. Also i think the type two silver and gold eagle design is ridiculous. Really how hard would it be to file off 1 Reed.

What is the HZ tone for Austrian Philharmonic 1oz ?
Where do you get that tool to hold the coin? Is there a link? What's the name of it?
Being old enough to remember when silver was in circulation I don't need anything to tell if a coin is real silver. When I hear a silver coin "ring" I KNOW what it is due to the many decades I have heard them. I am 70 this year so silver has been in my life since the 1950's.
Yes, I am the same age. I grew up in Carson City NV. Real Silver Dollars were still on most gaming tables up to 1963. In 64 most casinos went to tokens. Tokens were available in all casinos as an advertising souvenir until the change over. Then tokens became the replacement for Silver Dollars. Many Casinos contracted with the Franklin Mint to coin their tokens, some had 10% Silver content. Those were the days. Yes, there were some casinos that had copper tokens, wooden chips and other stuff, like plastic rounds. But the metal, especially the ones with a little Silver in them were the best.
Can you put a toned coin into a capsule to stop the coin continue to tone, other wise the coin changes over time. I don't think the toning makes the coin art, the coin design already makes it art. The toning makes the coin more unique, one of a kind. If we can stop the toning at a point we think is coolest with a capsule that would be cool.
Yes an airtight capsule would prevent further toning. Grow your stack!
❤❤❤
People do it artificially all the time, store it with paper or something with sulfur compounds.. difficult to do in a convincing manner though. Not a big fan of tones.
hi keep it up 👍🏼🔥🐉

Never buy coins on E-Bay. Always buy from a coin dealer.
😂 or just know what you're doing. It's not hard to spot a scam once you know what to look for.
Thats true... I have had silver tone because of Temperature Fluctuations cold.. warm ... cold for months then warm for months then again
how can you tell that it didn't just tone from being exposed to the air for months?

Hi all, my son and I are still very new to stacking. Can anyone tell me what the silver coins with gold animals at time stamp 1:11 are? We’d love to know what the series is called so we can buy some. Our attempts at googling them have came up empty.
They could be commemorative Maple Leafs
Besides the 1 oz gilded silver Koala, The rest are gilded Australian lunar series silver coins!
Thank you all so much
In Australia, I had to buy some of those ‘Lunar’, dollars, as gifts, and for myself, before I came home to the US. It was the monkey-year, that year.... I thought they were beautiful, too! Thank you all.
Fascinating
Should not even have to ping it...play the tone and the coin should 'sympathy' vibrate...please correct me if I got any part of that wrong..always try to save room for more knowledge.
Love🎉
Thank you for that
Maple Leaf's don't "ting" because they're 24 carat (same for gold Buffalo)?
16 minutes, what is a "raah coin"? Are they from the Caribbean or something?
knowing the tone for gold buffalo and maple leaf would be nice
Even if you have bad hearing, you could probably record it with your phone and check the frequency in the recording using some kind of app.
Do you have any 1893 or 1895 Morgan's for not gold prices
these dates are usually worth more than an oz of gold.

@@swfzpbzdolvr do you have these
@@davidsenia1252 Not currently. Ill message you if we get either or both
You avoid fake gold by buying from reputable dealers, eBay gets such a bad rap when it comes to buying gold when all the major dealers are on there. It's not just individuals selling Eagles or any other coin, you have JM bullion, SD bullion, Liberty coin which is my favorite, Scottsdale mint, Apmex, another solid Company is BGASC. That's how you avoid being scammed!
great video. just use the apps on your phone. couldnt stand all the ringing though
my hearing is so bad that The pings are out of my range, can't even detect the sound.
Just buy your gold from Portland precious Metals. We won't sell you anything fake!

In logic eagle verses maple the refiners prefer maple as do I.
In the last 20 years the spot silver
price has been controlled and frozen.
COMEX is the culprit.
20 years I have lost buying silver,
DUDE those Libertads!!!! I want
That's what I said when I first saw them! Grow your stack!
if you *really* wanted them... you could just call the shop...
Premium too high for Mexican silver Libertard...
Spent the money I had saved for my first ounce to instead buy a Sigma Pro, peace of mind is worth it.

Not sure if this was in the other comments...but what's being described from 6:39 (going to one country to buy and sell at another for higher): the term for that is "arbitrage." That's actually a thing in finance or even in real life. You make $100k in California and take that same $100k to Missouri (for example) where cost of living is cheaper and that $100k goes farther.
I'm not sure if arbitraging is a thing in precious metals (I doubt it.) If it were, it would need to make sense financially.
It is. Shanghai prices on gold and silver are higher than New York because of market manipulation in the West. There are people doing the arbitrage play on precious metals.
Im lucky to be able to stack in this recession while the prices are so low. A lot of people just dont have the extra money to put into precious metals.
The toning could keep getting darker until it gets black? I doubt it is long term permanent.
Thanks Silver Dragons...
Thanks for that feedback! I have something I'd love to share with you.
Shops used to pay gold spot. In Utah. Now they buy avg 40 under and sell avg 80 over as premium on it
Hard to blame them.. fluctuation is frequent.. and if they sell it a day late, they lose. I do, however, take exception with LCS that pay spot or a little less on a collectible, since spot fluctuation has less effect.
Gold is cheaper in other countries but the import taxes and fees to take it out of the country make the cost outrageous the United States has by far the most expensive gold prices. Also gold in raw is crazy cheap in foreign countries

Why does the 1 oz krugerrand sound different from the 1 oz eagle?
When they started minting the eagles, they "copied" the krugerrand. Same alloy, same size, same thicknes...
they are not the same alloy nor are they the same dimensions. Krugs have more copper and Eagles more silver. Grow your stack!

Can you tell us why you aren't doing goldback videos anymore?
I keep all my non-numismatic coins in manilla envelopes, on top of my hot water heater... I've got some rounds that are rainbow toned. They're actually even more beautiful now.
Some people would call that artificial toning.
❤
@@Portlandpreciousmetals and some people would be wrong. What's the difference between that and keeping them in albums in the attic?
@@jonathancrocker366 Thats not my opinion, but there are toner "purists" out there that have a very strict definition of what is and what is not natural. It's best to walk on eggshells as not to offend any one. One of my most beutiful toners was a 2 oz Privateer that I left on a shelf in my kitchen for about 6 years. It has amazing color but I have been told that this is artificial toning so what is and what isn't probably depends on each individual the definition they subscribe to. Ive been told that if you put them in the album and in the attic with the intention of them toning then it is artificial. But if Grandma just has them in the attic and they get toned then its natural.
@@Portlandpreciousmetalsbut what if grandma were an evil Nazi!!!! Hmmm
What do fake ones sound like?
Interesting
Seems to me that the pitch of a coin should always be listed alongside its dimension and weight.
They have a coin tester app now that does the same thing
Art
Some really good painters, tape, and Tupperware with a few hard-boiled eggs smashed up, would do the exact exact same thing to that Morgan Dollar
That would be considered artificial toning. I have tried that and they just turned dark. Ruined a nice Morgan. Its a waste of food too.
Thanks for that feedback! I have something I'd love to share with you.
@@Portlandpreciousmetals well, it’s not to do on very high-grade Morgan dollars but it is a fun project to do with your son to get them into coin collecting. If you find a cull Morgan silver dollar and it does not work well on Peace dollars. Now the cull Morgan Dollar needs to be cleaned well with cream of tartar gently and a little bit of water, and then it needs to be etched with your preferred method of etching a metal. This could be anywhere from hydrochloric acid for a second to rubbing alcohol. Make sure you don’t touch with your fingers after it has dried. The older, the eggs, the better. In the sealed Tupperware set up some kind of a stand for the Coin. An old fork turned upside down works great, because the dollar fits right between the tines of the fork. On the other side of the Tupperware, smash the egg up after it’s hard, boiled and have it face whichever side you’re wanting to get the tone on the most. do not leave it in there very long at all. It will start reacting immediately. If it’s longer than 10 minutes it probably will be black or brown but one to two minutes you’ll get beautiful blue and some rainbow colors. Some of the Morgans do this wonderfully some do not it all depends on the Morgan to begin with. You do not want to do this. If it has the original striking layer on it this is just a fun project for Morgan’s that have been in circulation and are bought at melt value. it is artificial however, many of these are on eBay and they pass every day as real coins. I hate that people fall for it. I don’t sell on eBay but I see it all the time. It’s just for fun.
@@Portlandpreciousmetals also if it gets ruined, just use the cream of tartar gently and it’ll take it right back off. This was not recommended for like say an 1884S in mint state 64. This is meant for Morgan’s in the realm of details to VF 20. A 1896 Morgan, you can get for a good price that’s been circulated will work perfect
@@swfzpbzdolvr oh, really what do you have?
Nice
I bought Engelhard silver bars 1982 - 1984.
If you watch some older films/TV shows, you will notice that when people received a silver dollar, or something similar, they would flip it up in the air with a nail strike just like this gentleman did. It was a simple way for everyone to be able to test whether or not the change they received was authentic.
Toning does nothing for coin value in my book. I avoid buying and selling toned coins.Copper spots and mint mistakes or error coins also not anything I will dabble in.

cant afford = not able to hold onto fiat from one time period to the next without spending it.

I'm sure you know this is where the phrase "sound money" came from.
I prefer junk silver... I believe silver coinage will go back into circulation (toning don't mean squat)
What about the gold buffalo coins?
He mentioned that pure gold coins tend not to ring so much. Plus, I’m not sure you’d want to hit 24K gold, you may leave a dent
The buffalo is a strange one because for some reason the coins are not the same thickness around the circumfrence of the coin. If you look at the rim and rotate it you will see that it is most always thicker on one side. I am sure this affects the Pitch and would not be a consistent method of testing. ALL authentic 1 oz gold eagles will produce a pitch of 4498hz. Grow your stack!
