A big part of why yours turned out so different is because of the cocoa powder you used! Oreos are made with Black Cocoa Powder, not regular cocoa powder. Black cocoa powder has been heavily Dutched, so it's darker and less acidic than regular cocoa powder, which effectively also changes the flavor of the cocoa and the cookie. I'd also say put the cookie dough into a fridge overnight to let it firm up!
The distinctive taste of black cocoa is obvious, it is the overwhelming flavor of oreos. If you make a standard chocolate cake with black cocoa you get that taste in your cake. He 100% used the wrong cocoa.

@@monicanonya I'd suggest you check out the Jaffa Cake lawsuit (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_Cakes ) which legally defined what was a cake and what was a biscuit for taxation purposes. The result of the case was a cake was anything soft that went hard when stale and the biscuit was hard when fresh and went soft when stale. By that line of thinking Josh's soft cookies are a cake rather than a biscuit and therefore are not the same as Oreos.

Just the thumbnail aline shows that this is not an Oreo by any stretch. The colour is off, the pattern is missing, it's way too large to dip into anything, the texture is off (too soft). It almost certainly tastes better though but that shouldn't be the only criteria to beat something.

Old oreos used to have lard, they switched to hydrogenated oils (trans fats) and switched to partially hydrogenated ones, don't think them being vegan is something that special tbh

Josh, I've been doing a lot of research on Oreos as I'm going to make them at work. After baking the cookies you've got to put them in a dehydrator in order to get the snappiness of the OG Oreos. The same trick is needed in order to achieve the proper texture for Thin Mints. I'm also pretty sure you need to use white sugar as brown usually adds a bit of chew to cookies. The frosting should basically be pure sugar as well, no fats, the filling of Oreos isn't really luxurious or silky it's more a weird sugar toothpaste type thing. Anyway, I know But Better isn't supposed to be a replica, but I thought you'd appreciate the advice as well as a reason to use your dehydrator.

Yes, dark Dutch cocoa powder no baking powder, it’s really more a cracker type cookie. I love Oreos but only buy the seasonal colored ones since they have more stuffing then original Oreo’s and less the double stuffed. Tossed in a bowl and add milk and away with my spoon! 😋 Berry Blast ice cream was the best 2011! Then they changed them but still off the market.
I felt the same when he added the milk and butter. I have the infamous red-meat allergy (and yes, it extends to dairy) and was supremely disappointed. But, that's not an oreo, it's a whoopie pie, so I am a bit vindicated.

@@monicanonya I'd suggest you check out the Jaffa Cake lawsuit (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_Cakes ) which legally defined what was a cake and what was a biscuit for taxation purposes. The result of the case was a cake was anything soft that went hard when stale and the biscuit was hard when fresh and went soft when stale. By that line of thinking Josh's soft cookies are a cake rather than a biscuit and therefore are not the same as Oreos.

Just the thumbnail aline shows that this is not an Oreo by any stretch. The colour is off, the pattern is missing, it's way too large to dip into anything, the texture is off (too soft).
It almost certainly tastes better though but that shouldn't be the only criteria to beat something.

Old oreos used to have lard, they switched to hydrogenated oils (trans fats) and switched to partially hydrogenated ones, don't think them being vegan is something that special tbh

Josh, I've been doing a lot of research on Oreos as I'm going to make them at work. After baking the cookies you've got to put them in a dehydrator in order to get the snappiness of the OG Oreos. The same trick is needed in order to achieve the proper texture for Thin Mints. I'm also pretty sure you need to use white sugar as brown usually adds a bit of chew to cookies. The frosting should basically be pure sugar as well, no fats, the filling of Oreos isn't really luxurious or silky it's more a weird sugar toothpaste type thing. Anyway, I know But Better isn't supposed to be a replica, but I thought you'd appreciate the advice as well as a reason to use your dehydrator.

When I was a kid I would scrape all the cream off the cookies and make a deca-stuff cookie to give to my sister and I'd eat all the cookie pieces myself.
Looks like someone had to say it and potentially start war between which part is better the cookies themselves or the creme inside. And personally for me I like both parts I don’t have a favorite part of the Oreo.

Claire has an episode on ice cream sandwiches too. I've tried it. It's somewhat difficult to make (since you need to work fast for the ice cream not to melt) but worth it.

Yes, dark Dutch cocoa powder no baking powder, it’s really more a cracker type cookie. I love Oreos but only buy the seasonal colored ones since they have more stuffing then original Oreo’s and less the double stuffed. Tossed in a bowl and add milk and away with my spoon! 😋 Berry Blast ice cream was the best 2011! Then they changed them but still off the market.
