How the China-Taiwan conflict could be devastating for the global economy | Business Beyond

  • For almost 75 years, the People's Republic of China and the island of Taiwan have co-existed in a state of tense limbo. China claims the island as part of its territory. But Taiwan is a functioning democracy and most people there want it to stay that way.
Cross-strait tensions have increased dramatically in recent years. The US, Taiwan's key strategic partner, says China wants to be ready to invade by 2027. Chinese President Xi Jinping has not ruled out the use of force.
Taiwan matters hugely to the global economy because of its complete dominance in the production of semiconductors. A Chinese blockade or invasion of Taiwan would shatter that all-important sector and as a result would wreak havoc on the economies of China, Taiwan and the wider world.
In this video, we look in detail at what is the most urgent threat to the global economy - and ask if anything can be done to avert catastrophe.

I'm glad that the west has woken up to this stupidly high dependence on chips produced by one company and country in the world. More could've been done still and earlier. I think both the US and the EU need to massively subsidize their own chip manufacturers, if needed, to get the advanced chip production lines and processes going.
We're talking about such a critical commodity that things just can not continue like this. I mean, the EU has wasted billions on much, much more useless endeavors like the Covid recovery fund and such. One other weakness that Taiwan has is Taiwan's energy infrastructure, it's an island, it's not like Germany that you guys can buy them from France (i.e. your grid is not isolated). And they (Taiwan's power plants) are also near saturation. All China needed to do is to get rid of those first, then trying to control their airspace accompanying with blockade around the island. So US must react pretty fast if it wishes to act. Additionally China is also very good with hacking.
But any sort of provocation will probably spark a global blockade. I highly doubt China will do anything rash. Last time the US flew its aircraft 41 NM away from China's coast and China did nothing, which shows China can only give last warning.

Intel is 3 generations behind TSMC and Samsung. TSMC and Samsung were going to build 5nm fabs in the US with the help of billion dollar subsidies from the Chips act. However the conditions for receiving the subsidies were only made clear recently and both TSMC and Samsung will not be applying for the subsidies. Irrespective of whether Taiwan is considered a country or not does not automatically cede the sovereignty to China.
The fact is that there are no internationally recognized treaties, policies or UN resolutions that state that Taiwan is part of China.
In fact, Taiwan was not even included into the PRC constitution until 1978.
Taiwan has been under the partial control of 5 different regimes in the last 400 years in which it was only Japan who first governed the entire island. In fact the non-Han non-Mandarin speaking Qing (like the Mongols considered barbarians by the Han Chinese) only controlled about 1/5 of the island while the indigenous people controlled the majority.
The only legal way that Taiwan can amalgamate with China is if they agree to a treaty ceding their sovereignty.
