  • This Chrysler VJ Valiant Wagon has a Small Block Mopar V8 in it with a big cam. Client wanted the classic to be a bit more drivable so it was decided to fit a Holley Super Stealth with Hyperspark ignition. We chose the polished Holley Super Stealth (up to 650cfm) as it looked the most like a traditional Holley carburettor.
    With the Super Stealth we fitted Holley in tank fuel pump with sock, 3/8 inch stainless fuel lines (supply and return), Hyperspark ignition box, distributor and coil with Holley’s pre-wrapped Hyperspark to Sniper wiring loom. Made MSD leads to suit and have a dry cell battery to assure good 12V power supply
    Problems began almost instantly as we fitted the Stealth, it was hard to start (OK that can happen) didn’t want to run smoothly we had to give her throttle, would cough and splutter, back fire through the exhaust and the Sniper, the handheld would work then go all red but the Sniper would keep running for a bit, sometimes the handheld would come back on sometimes the whole system would just shut down. On a few occasions it would cut off but the fuel pump would keep pumping and flood the motor making us do a hard reset.
    Ran through all the checks:
    Checked fuel pressures
    electrical connections
    swapped out the coil and ignition box
    moved coil away from ECU to eliminate RFI etc…
    Eventually contacted Holley techs and they ran through the checks with me and said return the unit it was a faulty ECU. We did and ordered another one, low and behold same issue. Ran through the same checks then thought lets just swap out the Super Stealth for the Holley Super Sniper from Shane’s Cuda. Bam instantly ran and tuned, all of the issues were gone
    Anybody else come into the same issues with the Super Stealth? Would love to hear your experiences in the comments below
    We aren’t going to try three for three and have now fitted a chrome Super Sniper which is running just beautifully. Will finish tuning and locking out the learn then run her up on the Dyno

    Make sure your grounds are all solid ie: battery negative terminal connection tight, ground connection to engine block is solid, good grounds to heavy loads like fuel pumps, thermo fans etc. A bad ground will scramble the ECU and give you all sorts of gremlins. Glad to see it’s going ok now.

      I think they look great in lime , but even a wreck painted with mission brown house paint still looks better than any modern car.

    I had the same dramas with a brand new Fitech, I sorted 4 issues straight out of the box but after 7 months of trying to get it sorted and replacing just about every part on the fn thing, including the controller that just black screened, I wanted to smash it with a sledge hammer. A court case got my money back. I went back to a carb, not what I wanted but it works.

      Yes we've fitted a few Fitech, for a while it was the only one which offered an option for twin "carbies" on a supercharged car, but very hard to use and set.

    I've had my fair share of start up issues, gone thru 2 x O2 sensors
    Fi ally sorted

    Dan from DD Speed shop had the same issues , had full support from all the top names. went back to carby. A quick TH-cam search will find that more don't work than do work.

      This is an oddball one for us, we've fitted and fixed ones that have been installed incorrectly allot. Lost count of how many we've done this, in our experience, is unusual. All up only had max 5 or 6 that haven't worked. However, most don't have hyperspark...Working great now with the new 650 cfm Super sniper in Chrome so might just be a Stealth issue.

    Hi, You might want to look at Terminator X Stealth TBI , which has a seperate ECU. Don’t like the fact SNIPER has ECU inbuilt, on engine, surrounded by distributor and leads , and vibration.

    I’ve read a number of times now about Holley sniper failures!
    What started me looking was when I was modifying my CM but I chose carby as it was much more affordable for me. Actually a mate has a sniper system on his XB 351 motor,initially all was good but after a few months of driving he started getting intermittent idle problems in which he had no luck solving so he too went back to the Holley 750 carb,no issues now. Funny about that.

      @ValigruntPerformance  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All the others we've fitted and fixed the fitment of have had no issues. Lost count how many we've done now. You do, however, have to lock out the learn if left unchecked the Sniper will compensate by 200%.

    Have you got the same firmware on the sniper and handheld? Also check your running the same in your PC. When I had mismatched firmware, I got the same issue with the data logs flipping back in itself.

      Yes same firmware, everything looked right according to the computer end but just kept playing up. Works great now with the standard super sniper just the two Stealth models that gave us grief.

    Once I had problems on my sniper the iac wouldn’t work the plug looked in but wasn’t if that makes sense you can tape off the iac intake hole to set idle speed as long as it stays below 1% throttle otherwise have to reset to reset the tps.
    One issue I also had was in advanced fueling the fuel map is set to dump fuel in and it starts at -10 which even in Melbourne isn’t really going to get that cold acting as a choke but the parameters were all up the creek only found this due to forums.
    They can also hang revs if iac decay is to slow
    And for others reading cause I know you guys mentioned you have good 12v if you tap into a wire some things have a ballast or resistor wire so during crank you have 12v but at run it drops to maybe 5-6v that will cause havoc with the sniper.
    I have also done an o2 sensor I have had it in my charger when that had a 360 and I have it currently in my 393 clevo xb ute very happy with how it’s running though now

    • @ValigruntPerformance
      @ValigruntPerformance  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting with the -10 setting I still have the file from the first Stealth will have a look at the settings. Ballast resistor has been removed and no voltage drop, checked that. It presented like an ignition issue but when we switched to the Super Sniper without changing anything else, hey presto problems solved.

      @frostype400 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ValigruntPerformance getting help from them can be hard it’s weird but i suppose not impossible to have two faulty brand new units but it makes me think it could possibly be a parameter/setting.
      Like maybe something in the advanced fueling or perhaps even the timing the unit thinks it’s been a while since I went through the menus on my handheld but can you disable or choose a different timing function all together?

    • @ValigruntPerformance
      @ValigruntPerformance  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@frostype400 ran through and checked all of that, both Stealth had the same settings (screen shot them) and went through it with techs. I think it is the Stealth with the Hyperspark, most of what we fit and fix is the Super Snipers and tune but parameters should be the same. Have fixed issues with other Stealths as well but they didn't have the hyperspark connected. Maybe the Super Sniper has better protection for the ECU.
      We made sure the timing on the distributor matched what was on the Sniper as well, bit of a procedure to follow with the Hyperspark. Punched the same parameters we had in the Stealth into the Super Sniper and no issues.
      Then again we know Holley seems to be discontinuing allot of the older models for the Sniper 2. Wonder if maybe they were getting bad batches and had to retool or adjust the Sniper product to run with the Hyperspark? Might be something they have addressed in the Sniper 2. I also noticed they seem to be selling a few refurbed Sniper units which makes me think there may have been a common fault that they didn't realise until too many were out in the market and are now just doing catch up?

    • @frostype400
      @frostype400 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ValigruntPerformance a lot of times with refurbed units it’s one component or just an update so I think the fact they are offering refurbished units gives a lot of credit to your theory I wish they were a bit more transparent because ultimately they are a good product
