This is a world wide problem. Engine shops are now going roller only. No issues with roller assemblies or cams. This has been a well known issue for around 3 years now.
This man is a perfectionist and not just your average mechanic. This is a huge problem now with rubbish lifters and cams. Good to know Crow cams are doing the right thing. Last engine was a 327 i built for the wife. After an hour its ticking like a time bomb. All pushrods were spinning. Pulled the scorpion roller rockers off and the pushrods wore out the tips . Easy to fix but ,the quality of this crap is disappointing. Put Manley pushrods in and not a problem again. I feel terrible for top engine builders like Valigrunt who already have a hard enough job and now hes got to do another 40 hours rebuilding an engine because Comp cams wants to rip off customers. They should be compensating people for this. If this happened in Aviation they would be in jail. My heart goes out to you guys , its just not fair. Beautiful job as usual.
Thanks Peter. It is really hard for everyone. Building a motor is such an exciting process for our clients, we try to keep them in the loop as much as possible and when this happens it's devastating for them. Glad we got it sorted in time though. The client has been happily running it in over the last week.
Questions...Direct Connection Parts?...All Oil Galleries clear and flowing? I have been with flat tappet/Roller cam setups through ISKY trustworthy all the time...Big question..Machinist Qualified?
All galleries clear and flowing, all high quality parts, extremely qualified machinist who has been machining high end and professional race team cars for years. Changed to Aussie made cam and lifters and car is driving as we speak. He loves it. Allot of engine builders are resurfacing this brands lifters here as a matter of course as they are always out and these lifters failed the hardness test massively. Same company sent hyraulic rollers and one was empty, no spring. Luckily, we picked it up on assembly.
From watching other you tube channels , another thing with bad lifters besides being soft, is that sometimes they don't have a crowned surface and therefore wont spin . It's really disappointing that brands you think you can trust sell rubbish ,there used to be a lot of American cam and lifter companies that were trustworthy. Isky cams are still going, I think , the old bloke that started it is still alive at over a hundred years of age , surely he still see's to it that they dont sell crap?
The lifters arent machined correctly as there not tapered underneath . Its happened to me also no matter what company the lifters come from theses only a few companys left whom make lifters now unfortunately.
This is fascinating to me. I also own a 318 but in a CM. It is a mild engine. Comp cam 268h and I don’t know where the lifters came from? But after about a year it developed a loud tick from a couple of lifters,I bought crow lifters and it’s been perfect since. My heads are stock but I have an edelbrock intake, edelbrock 500 carby, extractors and full exhaust and HEI ignition. Trans is a 727 with 2500 stall. It runs very well but I’ve always felt that the carby is too small? I was advised to run the 500 4 barrel. It made 210 at the wheels on the dyno in which isn’t too bad. Out of curiosity, what size carby are you running on this 318? Bloody nice VC by the way. 🤘
That’s a very good question and one in which I’m afraid I cannot answer! The mechanic I used bought the gear so where from and when I’m unsure? Sorry mate.

We recently had a set of brand new roller lifters from the same company and one was empty. Luckily we picked it up during assembly...

Yes we are finding that too, more and more often builders are refacing the surfaces of lifters to get the right shape.

Out of curiosity how old were the Comp lifters, when were they made?
That’s a very good question and one in which I’m afraid I cannot answer!

Sorry mate.
If it helps,my engine was put together in 2019
These lifters were late 2021.
what brand Roller lifters were they?
Both sets of faulty lifters were Comp.
