How to Conquer the INACCESSIBLE Oil Drain Plug - Cub Cadet / Kohler Courage

  • I don't mean to complain....well, yes I do. Do Cub Cadet and Kohler not want you to change your oil? I mean, shouldn't a regular oil change be one of the most basic maintenance tasks on any engine? Why then must the oil drain be hidden and nearly inaccessible? In this video you get the chance to listen to me complain a bit, and also learn how to accomplish an oil change on this Cub Cadet LTX1050.
    BONUS: Be the first one to comment with the correct name of the song my daughter sings in the background on this video, and I will send you ten bucks. Imagine that....Ten bucks from Buck Weaser!
    Thanks for watching. Feel free to leave a nasty comment, a thumbs down, and unsubscribe from my channel! I'm just in that kind of mood!!!

    Not sure if it was already mentioned but you have another drain plug access directly on the opposite side of the engine just below & slightly to the rear of the oil filter. What you’re looking for is the square type bolt with white thread lock on it. You can see the bolt at 6:54 in the video.
    Completely drain the oil, remove that plug, then you could install an actual oil hose with a screw top or do you 6 inch extension whichever you prefer. Either way access is a whole lot easier from that side then under the starter.
    Hope this information helps. Good luck & if you do it, record & share

    Connect a hose to the end and turn the valve. Not really all that hard.

    Thank you so much for this video! Been working on a third-hand LT1045 the last few days and found a manual for it online, but the release valve wasn't even shown in the right place. I only managed to spot it thanks to your video and barrel pump to get oil to release (though I used a pie pan instead of a coffee lid, lol). I honestly think this is the first oil change she's ever gotten, poor thing. Thank you again!

      Exactly. Very easy with the hose. You just twist the plastic ring on the valve, remove the cover and voila'!. I have a problem, though and just noticed that the valve came lose from the oil pan and dumped all the oil. Guess I just have to tighten and hope that was the problem.

    Respect your challenge. What worked for me without removing starter…
    First place flat blade screw driver between right side of pop out drain and top of frame. Turning screw driver turns drain.
    Next put a standard oil funnel spout over end of drain. It fits perfectly, even pops on and clears everything for a clean run into oil pan.
    Use two hands, finger tips on each side and pop drain out.
    Job done.
    Admittedly watched your vid first then adapted. Hope this helps.
    Cheers

    Thank you so much for not making me feel like a COMPLETE idiot ! I agree, it's almost as if they don't want you to change your oil. First time doing it myself, had a shade tree mechanic do it last time, but he gave me the hose idea, I thought I wrote meticulous instructions down, but heck no......oil is now all over everywhere south of the plug even draining on my belts underneath. I am a woman, but raised on a farm, change my own oil in my vehicles, but this is what should be an easy task making me shake my head. I didn't realize my shade tree mechanic w/ his needle nose pliers, was twisting, then slightly pulling to get it out of the notch. I didn't go back b/c I got tired of the boy, young enough to be my own child, calling me "good-looking", and various other cutesie remarks. (eye roll here). So, I've learned something today- thank you very much for admitting, as a man, that it's almost as like they don't want you to change your own oil. I'll figure it out, try to clean my belts & pulley of oil, and know next time with better instructions, or someone posted some sort of oil syphoning pump- that sounds easy enough. I've syphoned gas from a vehicle before by just a hose and my mouth....don't think I'll try it with oil however. Already have it in my hair, my shoulder and around my mouth trying to hold the damn flashlight where I could see ! Bless your heart, but thank you bunches !!! Let me see if I can reel in all those cuss words I used earlier and try again !

    • @Buckwsr

      I hope you've got it all sorted out by now, Andrea. Those tractors come with a hose to fit over the end of that drain valve, but nobody keeps track of where they put it, so the hose is of no use. I have a simple hand transfer pump that works well on lawn mowers that have no drain plug. That would be a good idea for your tractor as well. Get one cheap at Harbor Freight Tools. See ya.

  • @ApprenticeGM
    @ApprenticeGM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    This is not the right way to change the oil on a Kohler Courage. You're doing it incorrectly, making it hard for yourself when Kohler have actually made the design simple and effective. Read the manual! My mower came with a plastic tube which you push on the end of the drain plug. Takes a second and is very simple and easy. No tools needed, no need to remove starter or incline mower etc. Your comment about people mis-placing the plastic tube is possible, but the easy solution is to just keep it with the oil pan and other things you use for oil replacement eg spare filter and oil.

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are not incorrect. But there is more to it than just connecting the hose. You also have to be able to grab the drain plug firmly enough to twist it and pull it in an outward direction to start the oil flow. The whole fitting is usually covered with oil and dirt, and leaking. Extension tube or not, I like my design much better. And as I've experienced, most people lose track of that hose....

    • @Keepnthem
      @Keepnthem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And if ya do misplace the drain tube you can get another one for $6 on Amazon. Small price to pay for being too dumb to put yer stuff away when yer done with it.

    I have a 25 HP but it looks similar. It is a 2018 model. The yellow drain assembly is on the same side as my oil filter. I noticed on your video that you have a square drain plug below and to the right of you oil filter. Next time you change oil, see if you can swap the location of the yellow drain assembly with the square drain near your oil filter. You will have to remove the square drain plug on the side with your oil filter (this is where you will put the yellow drain assembly) and then move the square drain plug to the location under your starter. After the swap, it should be a lot easier to drain oil the next time. Hope this works for you!!

      I discovered yesterday that the female end of a 1/2” socket set fits perfectly over the square engine drain plug. I used a 12 inch extension with a 13 mm open end wrench on the male end to tighten my square drain plug located under the starter without having to remove the starter.
      I’ll try to attach pictures.

    If it's like mine, you need to push the yellow barrel IN, then twist it counter-clockwise, then pull it outward.
    You just tried to force it to twist then, from the low flow shown, I don't think you even pulled it out fully.

    • @Buckwsr
      @Buckwsr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point of the video is not how to open the drain plug...that's easy enough....but when you do, since it doesn't extend past the tractor frame, the oil just spills all over the place. That's the real problem....

    Should note that some of the drain plugs come in 2 parts, the yellow plastic part and a black metal part that screws into the engine. You need to take both parts off to get to the engine drain port to add the drain improvement.
