My lawn tractor has a Briggs and Stratton 17 Hp Intek Engine, and it had one of those leaky plastic oil drain valves you mentioned in the video. I went a different route in replacing it with a EZ Drain EZ-110 Valve that has a 3/8-18 NPT thread with the EZ L-001 L-Shaped Hose End. It allows me to drain the oil easily into any empty 4 or 5 liter motor oil containers without any mess. I didn't have to buy any extra extension pipes, since the drain valve sits just over the lawn tractor's frame rail.
A little work now saves you tons of cleanup later. Great job Donny!
I installed a similar drain hose on my B&S V-twin Intek earlier this year...I got tired of having oil leaking when that old valve would come apart while taking the hose back off.
We used to install hoses on heavy equipment when the drain plugs were in hard to reach places, to help speed up oil changes.

I installed this very same part on my B&S 23hp twin. I would recommend it for ease of oil change. I also purchased the optional wheels for my mower deck and hour meter. All were included in the next options level of my Snapper. Just look up the part numbers for your brand's next options level and do the same.
Great idea; thanks for the part numbers and for showing us why and how to do it. I think people consciously or subconsciously put off these oil changes because they're so messy, and until this video came along, it was not something that could be done in 5 minutes.
My Generac standby generator came with a similar drain rig from the factory. I thought it was a really nice little feature. It made me feel like they cared about regular maintenance.

I purchased the connector and hose from the seller that you provided the links for. They arrived within just a few days and I installed it on my Cub Cadet XT1 (22 HP Kohler). I used a zip tie to create a loop to support the host by the clip on the cap. I won't be changing oil for a while so I can't say how well it works.
The steering rod on that side rubs a little against the hose when I turn the wheel, so I'll have to keep an eye on that. But the hose looks pretty tough and the steering rod is smooth.

I install brass nipples of an appropriate length, with 1/4-turn valves on the end, on everything I can. Generators, water drains on air compressors, etc.

My lawn tractor came with the hose drain installed. It's a very handy rig, indeed. However, there is one drawback to my particular tractor. The cap does not provide a very tight seal leading to an accumulation of oily dust on the engine block and shroud. My "farm-fix" solution was simply to wrap a small tag around the cap and hold it in place with the clip up against the engine shroud. It captures the oil mist leaking from the cap and helps keep the shroud and block area clean.
How's she goin'? This is a great solution to avoid having a mess when you change the oil. Thanks for posting.

I did something similar with mine, except I used steel pipe. 6" piece of pipe threaded on both ends, 90 degree elbow on the end facing down and a pipe plug in the end of the elbow. no plastic or rubber to start leaking. No mess all over the mower either!

thurm101 What Rickster said. Most likely something partially clogged, did you drain it for the winter? A good cleaning will almost always fix it.
@@TheOtherBill Another thing that will cause surging is the little spring that runs along the main governor linkage not hooked up properly or not tight enough. About went crazy a couple of times after cleaning carbs real well just to find out the spring didn't have enough tension. I've seen a couple come out of their attachment holes too.

Club Cadet rider came with a Kohler engine that has a similar oil drain hose. The house has cracked/split at the bend part of the hose. Replacing it today with a 4" piece of threaded cast iron pipe and cap.

It's likely cost cutting by the manufacturers, a large V channel in the chassis would have been better, but it would cost more and restrict them to that engine design only.

I might do this on my lawn tractor with a Briggs 14.5 hp power built engine.
My grandfather used to have a GT2550 exactly like that one and I always hated doing oil changes because of the poor location of the drain plug. They could have at least added a spout or a shutoff valve from the factory, but instead they just used a regular square plug on both sides, in spots that are very difficult to reach with a wrench.

My 2013 Craftsman YT-3000 came with this same oil drain set up and I like it but after many years of messy oil changes I improved it even further by eliminating having a drain pan mess to clean afterwards by just placing the end of the drain hose secured with the yellow end clip into a empty 14 lb. cat litter container sitting on the ground wedged between the inside area of the front tire and the frame to keep pressure from the bent down hose from trying to move the container and pop out as I only once experience that hot oil mess. On the oil filter side of the mower I use a reusable cut out and shaped piece of a gallon iced tea container bottom that catches all of the oil under the filter area and guides the oil flow downward through a sort of "U" channeled shaped end run into the same litter jug opening like with the drain hose. No spills, no mess equals no problems, install the lid back on the container afterwards and take it to the recycling center. Most of these containers have 2 1/2" to 3" openings making them ideal to work with than an empty 5 quart oil container with a Narrower 1 1/2"-1 3/4" opening, and with 2 cats I always have an endless supply of them.
The Toro zero-turn I bought has this type of drain tube on it from the factory. But a word of advice, use caution when removing the hose from the “up” position. The plastic nipple which the hose mounts on that’s built into the plastic shroud is not very stout and will break off easily if you wiggle the hose too hard trying to pull it down. Ask me how I know. lol

Great tip! I got so tired of lazy mower manufacturers putting oil drains in places like that cub cadet i boughr an air powered oil extractor for the shop. Faster and cleaner than a drain pan.
The mower manufacturers dont make the engines...
@@ForrestGump1212 no they don't but the mower manufacturers are the ones who design how the engine mounts. Most commercial mowers are designed for easy oil changes. The cheap residential ones usually have crappy drain locations.

I have an 89 craftsman gt6000 with a 20hp onan and it has a twist drain just like an air compressor.

I use iron piping used for gas to route the oil drain somewhere super convenient. With this mower it looks like it probably wouldn't work too well but it is basically the same thing. Or just use a pump and never use the drain plug again!
Snappers with bruggs have been using these for years.

I bought a Drainzit hose. Brass fitting with Continental high quality hose. 20 bucks.
Well an 11/16 deep well socket work as well
I trust the hose but not the plastic end. Keeping it up high is a great idea, that way it wont all drip out unnoticed if (when) the plastic cracks.

My 2015 Cub Cadet LT2 w/ a 18hp Kawasaki comes from the factory with this type of oil drain. I'm going to do this mod on my in-laws John Deer D-140 w/a 22 hp Briggs that I maintain. Got any tips on making less of a mess taking off... the spin -off oil filters

Hey good evening any advice on; How to remedy a exmark walk behind mower that once the engine is started the blades stays running without engaging deck blades.
I took care of my small engine power equipment oil change hassles with a vacuum extractor -- no muss, no fuss. Works with the sump of the air compressor too. And, not having to jack up the cars means they get serviced more often with fresh oil.
Seriously, if one has a garage full of cars, go-fast toys, and power equipment, consider a vacuum extractor.
Russ, I went to the vac method and I would never do it any other way. First thing to notice is with the vac method you get all the old oil out. The drain plug doesn't get it all from bottom of the crankcase. I have many lawn machines and the time saved doing the changes is unbelievable.

When I went to the linked site to see the cost of these 2 parts, it is incredibly slow and never showed an exact match for the parts each time I used the part numbers listed in your video. Is the threaded part to go into the block of the engine, plastic or metal? It looks to be metal, but the ones shown at that linked site looked to be plastic. I sort of liked this setup as opposed to another site which showed a DIY black pipe or galvanized pipe fitting assembly to do the same thing. That system involved making a cut in the plastic shroud of my Husqvarna riding lawnmower. This type of unit does not require the modifications and essentially does the same thing. However, I will have to go locally to a lawnmower parts supplier to find the parts you used, since I can't seem to get the correct thing by using that link shown on your video.

Wouldn't be a problem if they would have just installed the drain in a better location and/or used a pipe with an elbow on it to route it to a better location for draining rather than all over the engine mounting plate and/or frame...but hey it'll keep the rust away as the frame/engine plate will be rust proofed HAHA!!!

Certain John Deere engines use something like this. My Kawasaki v twin does not. Have you tried this mod. on a Kawasaki V ? (my neighbor has a z 345 with Kawasaki 22 hp V twin that has this set up)
