i work at a mower shop and we see these loose and leaking all the time. we actually use pipe nipples and a pipe 90 with a pipe plug or a pipe nipple and pipe cap to get the drain to just past the edge of the frame where possible. i don't like using those "leak-o-matic" drains.
This is what I'm gonna do. I hate that POS on mine , it leaks all the time . Mine is on a Gravely mower . Have to raise the motor up to get the dang thing out . PO'd
@@mrrobvs all and i mean ALL of the turn and pull drains will loosen and leak, and if you don't clean your mower, you may not notice it leaking, leading to engine failure if you don't check your oil frequently (even during breaks from mowing). my rule of thumb is check the oil EVERY TIME before you sit on the mower or anytime you notice something different. 30 seconds can save you $2000+
I had a Koehler valve like that on my Courage 720. The valve was under the starter, 4 inches back. I used a 4 inch x 3/8 nipple and a ball valve. Added a male plug in case the valve vibrated open. I took a 2 inch nipple and pushed it halfway into some 5/8 tubing. When I need to change oil, I just remove the plug and screw in the tubing
My Husqvarna with a Kohler engine has one of these, but it's not easy to get to, and I have to use the little clear hose. I see others comment, and I'm thinking of adding a small piece of threaded pipe, and then the original oil drain, or just a gate valve. Thanks
Great video, thanks. My Idea: take a 1/2" diameter , 6 inch long threaded pipe, and connect a 1/2" elbow with a 1/2" oil drain plug on the bottom. Use Teflon thread tape on threads.
Had the drain plug, the same one you are putting on to replace the bad one, on a Cub Cadet, started leaking and gets loose easily, gonna try the tape you are putting on to keep it tight, doesn't look like they put the Teflon tape on from the factory, thanks for the video.
LOL. My plug never leaked in 8 years. I change oil once a year. However it wiggles. I thought it was by design. It must be loose. I will tighten it as soon as I get home!!!! Thank you b
I just fought this on my new Cub Cadet, and it has the "new" Kohler type quick drain, and it was a pain, I took it off and put a 3 inch long pipe threaded on both ends and a ball valve on the end. My oil drain is under the starter, so I didn't have any room to get in there wiith a wrench, luckily the Kohler quick drain was finger tight, must have came from the factory that way.
On small engines I don't use any drain. Instead an oil evacuator quickly removes the warm oil from the dipstick tube (I have a mityvac bicycle-pump style), this almost eliminating the chance of a loose or leaky plug/drain. Good choice using quality oil... these engines only take a couple quarts. I use Rotella T-5 10w-30.
I have a Briggs&Stratton and just did an oil change for the 20th time, and since day one that same black valve makes a mess and pops off super easily. Junk.
I like this idea but I've also been thinking of just using a brass ball valve of some kind. For some reason those plastic valves just don't give me piece of mind....
Jeff Stone that's what I do with all my small engines. Find out what size diameter pipe is needed and get a 6in long or 8 inch long brass piece of pipe and throw a quarter-turn ball valve on the end and then buy a plug and plug it off. Easy peasy. No plastic stuff.
I watched you for awhile but have to say all these twist and pull are junk, pure disasters waiting to happen. The least is they get hot and stick, even when your careful you pull too far and you've got a mess. Worst case they vibe loose or off before you realize and I know several who lost engines.
Mine looks like it's a smaller thread size than that. In the video it looks like it might have a 3/8" NPT thread and my 17HP Briggs looks closer to 1/4" NPT.

The Kohler one leaks? Or the one that the video begins with?

That's what I did, minus the elbow, which I may add at the next oil change. It's danged near fool proof.
The kohler 7000 series takes 1/2" or 3/8" ?
I have a newer Cub Cadet with that yellow drain valve. It’s JUNK - I replaced it with a 1/2” to 1/2” shut off brass valve.
Thanks guys, yes, what a mess it made on my driveway until I finally saw what was going on. Appreciate the video.

lol mine wiggles. I thought I was by design. I have to tighten it now. I am lucky it did not leak in 8 years.
Mine is leaking right now, thanks for the video.
A Drainzit hose, or similar product is much easier and less messy to use.

I recall that video now, I even commented, lol. Why not use that on all oil changes?

I need to get and install one of those Kohler drain plugs that you got. My original plug is garbage (leaks all over the place).
injecting brake clean INTO the oil case...lovely
it drains right back out and evaporates... no problem
drained back out goober
Lol. it's not going to hurt anything....

can't you just put a pipe nipple and some kind of ball valve?
YOU sure can!
Will this fit an older Club Cadet with a 27 HP Kohler engine? It has the black one on there now.
Mine did too. Same 27 hp. I put a pipe nipple and a 90. No more mess. No more wasted time on bad engineering and plastic.
Do you know of a drain hose that will fit on a Kawasaki FX730V on my Hustler Fastrak SDX?
The Kohler ones are junk too
I like this idea but I've also been thinking of just using a brass ball valve of some kind. For some reason those plastic valves just don't give me piece of mind....
Jeff Stone I agree. The oil drains for the grasshopper mowers are all metal and utilize a ball valve type apparatus

bluelude2001 That's what I'm talkin about! Thanks
propane may run hotter but it burns so much cleaner. the oil also stays clean for much longer.
I have one that will not stop leaking. Have any clue why?
Bad seal
I have a new Kohler.....The drain fitting you are showing is a leaky pain in the ass......Keep shopping for something better!
I think I covered all of that in the video
Excellent video! Thank you
Where can I get a replacement drain hose?
Any hardware store. It's just 1/2 clear tubing
I watched you for awhile but have to say all these twist and pull are junk, pure disasters waiting to happen. The least is they get hot and stick, even when your careful you pull too far and you've got a mess. Worst case they vibe loose or off before you realize and I know several who lost engines.
will this replacement valve fit briggs engines ...
1966tnt absolutely

frank1380 it should fit any engine with a 3/8 npt
To be honest they all suck,,I’m hard piping mine!
That’s what she said
Going the wrong way with the tape
Nah.
Nope...
Just put a pipe or a hose
Thanks a lot
get that oil filter out of your way my guy.
Nah
Hard pipe and be done with it. Its plastic crap designed to do just what it does.
Spraying Brakeclean into the engine? I'll take my work elsewhere.
