Kohler Engine Valve Adjustment

  • How do you adjust the valves on a Kohler Courage engine?
See here in detail how i do it.
If you look in the service manual of the engine, you'll find the clearance specification for the valves:
    Intake valve with 0.005 in
    Exhaust valve with 0.007 in
After two hundred hours i measured the intake valve with 0.008 in and the exhaust valve with 0.011 in. As you can imagine, a service was really necessary. I am not sure how the clearance was as the mower was new.
The valve covers start leaking oil, and they had a design change on the cover. There is an additional metal washer like piece that needs to be added to guarantee a better seal in the lower area of the gasket.
To be save i added some black stuff to make it seal good. I hope i am able to remove it, when i have to adjust the valves after the next 200 hours.
You'll need a T15 Torx and a metric 10mm wrench to adjust the valves. A metric 10mm nut will do for the valve cover, and an 8 mm nut is needed for the engine cover/air duct.

Well done video. A trick for people to find the correct crank position is turn the flywheel until both rockers are loose. Take out the plug and run a piece of coat hanger wire in against the piston to find bottom dead center. Easy.

Great video and straight to the point. I didn't know they had made an aftermarket piece to keep the valve cover from dripping, oil. I ended up fabricating a piece of metal on my kohler cause the dripping on the exhaust was driving my nuts. Thanks

Thanks for this info! REALLY!!! I Had my engine start back fireing and 1 minute later it stopped running. Itried to restart it with a battery charger on start. The engine acted like the compression was being blocked all the sudden. At 1st I thought the battery, then I thought the starter, then fuel blockage, so I pulled the spark plug and the starter spun faster than before. Then I found out the valves may need adjustment so I Adjusted them. Still had engine kick back. So I found this TH-cam video an found the exhaust valve rod guide was pushed out of hole to far as you suggested and pushed it back in and readjusted the valves and it started. Thanks for this video info it saved me 5,000 $ as Istarted looking for a new mower today but thought I would try 1 more time. Thanks for the info!

You have set the engine ignition sequence for spark generation by the alignment of the coil and magnet. If the flywheel is not easily revealed, the same thing can be done by bringing the piston up to TDC on the compression stroke. This is exactly when spark will ignite the power stroke.

    • @1gtmach
      @1gtmach 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great video. Only suggestion is during the installation of the valve cover gasket, the new silicone should be liberally applied to one surface after both have been cleaned of oil and any debris, but more importantly, the liquid gasket should be allowed to form up for about 5-8 minutes before reinstalling the bolts that hold the valve cover on. Reason being, the liquid Selena the with just squeeze right out and create a potential gap.
Additionally, only finger tighten during that part of the install. Let sit for 40 minutes and come back to re-torque the bolts.

Recently repaired somebody else's repair on one of these engines in a Cub Cadet, the intake rocker was not pressing against the valve at all, and there was no Torx recess in the rocker stud to make an adjustment secure. The nuts were the only thing retaining the rockers, I don't know what all was supposed to be in there, it was my first time in a Kohler engine, but it was one of many things wrong.

I'm working on a neighbors Cub Cadet with SV590-003 19 hpKohler Courage that was rough running, backfiring and eventually not starting at all but just backfiring. • @mygiguser

Broken flywheel key: Hitting a rock or stump, loose blades, or loose flywheel. Ignition problems maybe. Adjusting the valves should be easy to rule that out, then also adjusting the gap for the ignition coil th-cam.com/video/bZ1SiQuKVBk/w-d-xo.html
and then the solenoid problem, i describe in the description of this video th-cam.com/video/8nnACUkswxA/w-d-xo.html what happens. How does your engine run in idle? Is it backfiring when it is running?

Do these engines have a compression release ? Is the valve adjustment made at TDCwfen spark plug is firing? Do you turn engine backwards to bring it to TDC ? I assume the comp release holds the ex valve open to assist starting on some engines. I don’t know if Kohler uses comp real ease I. I would have to think it uses SOMETHING like that

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  3 ปีที่แล้ว

If you take out the spark plug, then you don't have compression. The valve closes by a spring. You can turn the engine back and forth at TDC to find the spot where both rockers are loose.

I have a issue with fuel puddling at the mouth of the carburetor. The mouth of the carburetor should be dry. It seems there is blow back from the engine through the carburetor. You know actually this is an excellent video , of course removing the hood ?? Just lift it straight up after it is in open resting position ! Remove wiring first for the headlight's ! The trick of aligning the magnet with the new ignition coil for top dead center making sure both valves are closed , that was ok " but I prefer removing the spark plug and using a long screwdriver to FEEL the Piston on top dead center by turning the flywheel slowly by hand and visually looking at both valves closed ! Also you said to remove the ignition coil wire because it was self igniting WRONG if the key is in the OFF position the ignition coil is grounded and cannot fire the spark plug ! Also you should specify that it is the hex screw that LOCKS the rocker arm assembly in place NOT the nuts that hold it down ! And if you use a silicone sealer gasket maker for the gasket it needs to be rtv black oil resistant silicone sealer type ! You can use only silicone and eliminate the cork gasket all together ! Just lay a bead about 1/4 inch all the way around the valve cover gasket wait about five minutes and put valve cover back on but do it straight on as in have it lined up with the mounting holes so you don't have to wiggle the valve cover around messing up the silicone sealer ! One more thing , when and BEFORE YOU attempt to remove the 4 top cover bolts IF they are hard to break free DO NOT FORCE THEM TO BREAK FREE OR EXERT HARD PRESSURE ON THE WRENCH TO BREAK THEM FREE !! you will wring the bolts off in the engine block if their rusted up or just gummed up always use break free lubricant or deep creep or similar bolt loosening deep penetrating oil on those bolts and spray the threads protruding under the plastic cover the threads of the bolts let soak in penetrating oil and if still hard to turn before you use hard force and break them off try a small electric battery powered drill with the impact setting turned down very very low so the drill will lightly impact the bolts but not forcefully turn them , the knock knock knock of the impact from the drill will 90% of the time save you from breaking these cover bolts off in the engine !!! One more thing when you use the feeler guage use .0005 on intake valve and .0007 on the exhaust valve that's thousands of an inch ! If you can't SLIDE the feeler guage back and forth across the rocker and valve gap with very little resistance it's TOO TIGHT ! and always always always after you have set both clearances turn the engine at least a few revolutions and reset the piston on top dead center then recheck you clearances on intake and exhaust valves again !

Don’t have to use black rtv. In fact peramatex red rtv is high temp and would be best for this application.

Insert a 0.127 mm (0.005 in.) feeler gauge between
end of 1 valve and rocker arm. Turn adjuster or
adjustment nut (based on design), until a slight drag
is felt. Hold in this position and tighten locking nut or
setscrew securely. Torque setscrew to 7.9 N·m
(70 in. lb.). After tightening recheck adjustment.
Proper valve clearance is 0.101/0.152 mm
      (0.004/0.006 in.).
      4. Repeat procedure for other valve on side 1.
      5. Viewed from PTO end, rotate crankshaft 270° (3/4
turn) counterclockwise and align crankshaft keyway
with cylinder 2, which now puts cylinder at TDC on
      compression stroke.
      6. Repeat steps 3-4 for setting valve clearance on side
      2.
      7. Rotate crankshaft to check for free operation of
valve train. Check for clearance between valve
spring coils at full lift, or bending of push rod(s) can
occur. Minimum allowable clearance is 0.25 mm

Excellent video. I have one correction though.
When you say the clearance on the valves it is not 0.05 and 0.07 .......it is 0.005" and 0.007" .
I hope this helps people because making it 0.05 and 0.07 would not do a good results.
    Thank you and good luck.
