Ahh this was a hard episode to record. There's a bunch of stuff I like about this game, the presentation, character design, general moment to moment combat, artstyle, etc. Then there's just as many things I don't like; forced co-op, no local, way too many mechanics that don't compliment each other, damage sponge bosses and just...the general disappointment of Platinum working on a TMNT game where nothing really gelled. Still though playing through a chunk of it, made me feel less negative towards the whole thing, when compared to my initial thoughts when it launched. Really wish this could be re-released and like, patched and go through some heavy changes. There's potential here!
The best stage in the game I feel is the last stage. I love this game and wish it got more attention from people. I think the online multiplayer still works too
i'm telling ya, get Koei on the phone: TMNT Musou. It's gotta happen! You can have the different continuities in a story mode, plow through a bunch of foot clan and mousers with casey jones or something, it writes itself!!
It'd be cool if Matt could take a look at an older TMNT game. Like the one from 2004 or something, made by Konami. It had local multiplayer and unlockable characters for an arena mode where you fought each other. Pretty fun game.
From a Google search: "Within the city, too, the tunnels are deeply buried-for instance, 500 feet below the streets of Manhattan's West Side-because it is easier to connect to the water mains with vertical risers than to go wandering around through all the complications that lie closer to the surface."
As a Platinum Games fan and TMNT die hard, I was ecstatic about this game when announced. But I'm still pissed to this day when they said in an interview before release that they removed couch co-op to maintain 60fps. Then the game came out and was 30fps. You can't have a TMNT game without couch co-op, period.
When I heard that this game was based on the current IDW run, I was pretty stoked. As for Mikey, I too feel that they kid him up, kinda one of the reasons I like the 03 Mikey, his character actually develops throughout the series, check out the Christmas ep (also the only TMNT Christmas ever made for any tmnt series).
If you want to love Leonardo but think he’s too simple, watch the 2003 series. By the time you realize Leonardo is the main character of that series you’ll already be completely down for it
I remember me and my son were so hyped for this game. We're both fans of the series and always watched them together. Then the game came out and we found out about the no local multi player and we were crushed. A NINJA TURTLE GAME WITH NO LOCAL MULTI PLAYER??? I didn't even give it a chance cause if we couldn't play it I wasn't going to. Turns out it wasn't that good.
I actually really like the game. Beat it twice, both single and in coop. You might even call me Mutants in Manhattan apologist (don't put it on my grave, though) The combat is different from your usual Platinum game because it's more about strategic use of your special moves. The general combat is there so you could recharge your special moves essentially, but I think it's still fun despite the overall simple nature. Not nearly enough is being said about all the cool and original stuff the game has. Like, for example, every boss encounter has a secret phase - if you hit hard and fast, the other boss appears and joins forces with the current one you're facing. Like Bebop can appear at the last phase of Rocksteady bossfight, accompanied by a really cool cutscene. The game has a dynamic (kind of rogue-like) objective generation system. It's not as complicated as it sounds, but it's neat that every level you could potentially be doing different missions. Every boss fight also gets a sick ass music theme when you're at the last phase. Works exactly like Tables Turn from The Wonderful 101. I get why people could not like the game, but I don't think it's fair to call it lazy, since there's a ton of cool stuff in there. Lots of love for the source material. I'm glad you liked the game a little bit more on your second play, though, Matt.
there was a Ninja Turtles game on the GameCube that was based on the 2003 series. it has a great overhead beat'um'up style with great bosses based off the show, there is an arena mode and all four turtles have different move lists.
Am I the only one who thinks Raphael is kinda the worst Turtle in terms of personality type when you stop and think about it? I mean, he and his brothers are already outsiders, but oh, he's also got to be the loner of that group. It just rings as really poserish to me. If Leo is like Cyclops, then Raphael is the most obnoxious parts of Wolverine's persona. That's probably by he uses sais, so he can hold them like they're claws.
I've never heard of this game, but wow i feel bad as i was saying "why not change the A.I to something other then all out", then you did and it changed nothing. If anything it made things worse so i apologise for thinking you was not trying with it. Nothing sucks the fun out of a game faster then poor companion A.I, let alone actively sabotaging your experience like with those bombs, that was rough. Great vid please keep them coming.
Pretty clearly this is based on the IDW series, which is my personal favorite incarnation of the Turtles. I'm kinda sad this isn't even on Steam, regardless of the warts it looks like something I'd dig.
I forgot that Nolan North voiced Leo in this, along TMNT 2007's Raph, he's voiced 2, just like Rob Paulsen, actually Nolan voiced Splinter AND The Shredder in this too, feels like something I wouldn't forget, oh yeah, Ashly Burch was April too, that I remember.
Gotta admire Platinum in regards to the fact that theres some redeeming qualities in even there worst release. Also I wouldnt mind an episode on that other downloadable TMNT game that came out. I was so excited and then the reviews came in...
@@o.g.millennials somehow it almost felt rushed in a way, even with good intensions. Somehow it just felt rushed without being given a little bit more time. That just me though, and should not hinder those that have/do enjoy it
The konami games based on 2k3 cartoons aren't bad at all. You can play multi player locally and have a good amount of beaten up´, but alsop exploration and on the third one, even customization. It's really good!
This and the Legend of Korra game deserved more development time as they were perfect candidates for the Platinum treatment. They were given the short straw unfortunately
I did like the first Konami Ninja Turtles game because I grew up off it but I find it hard for me to truly go back to now unless playing with a friend. Otherwise it gets really boring real fast.
Matt, your level of information on these things blows my mind! I was so hyped for this game after playing Transformers Devastation, but i only played this a little bit before getting bored of the open empty world and lack of couch co-op.
I've been imagining a timeline where Rocksteady get a hold from this licence, with their greedy story-telling and world-building and that engaging "easy to learn, hard to master" free flow combat.
I know overworking your employees is bad but damn I wish Saito had directed this too. The focus on combat is what made Devastation shine and it would've saved this game.
Yeah....this was pretty rough I never even bothered getting it seemed like such a good combination like ice cream and France fries, but no hope they can get another crack at it one day
If they make a full fledged AAA Ninja Turtles game, they should have collectibles like in the PS4 Spider-Man but as a parody of it. Collecting every gimmicky toy or bit of merchandise would be fun.
Dude Matt, I feel the same way. I LOVE tmnt and this game looked so good (turtle designs could use a little extra work though) and I actually had a great time playing, but I always had this feeling of missed potential in a lot of it. Also there isn’t a lot of replay ability except for secret bosses, and those aren’t garenteed to show.
Wouldn't mind seeing this getting a rerelease, making it single player and the game being modified to fit a solo venture, like having less enemies during missions, bosses having less health, etc... plus having the option for multiplayer and adding a splitscreen mode with the game changed to take in multiple players, kinda like how borderlands handles multiplayer co-op.
I managed to snag a PS3 copy of this the other week. It's really hard to get copies of this and Transformers: Devastation on PS4 because of how overpriced they are due to scarcity (at least on Aussie eBay). Like a lot of people have said, Devastation is definitely the best of the Acitvision trio. The OST alone makes it the best in my opinion. It's a shame with how TMNT turned out, but I like to think some of the ideas here got to live on in Astral Chain. And I never thought about it, but you're spot on with the MadWorld/Anarchy Reigns comparison.
You should try TMNT Rescue Palooza. It's a fangame that's a massive love letter to the TMNT nes and snes games. It have a crazy huge roster that spams throughout the TMNT 80s series, movies, and games, plus it have 4 player multiplayer.
It makes me giggle to see the streets in NYC as empty as they are. Even now in lockdown, I can bet there's at least one person wandering the alleys ready with a phone to film nonsense like this

The Turtles fail to defuse a bomb that causes many casualties.
Mikey: *WHOOOPS SORRY BRO MAYBE NEXT TIME HUH DUDE?*
That's the exact attitude he had in that terrible Saban series Ninja Turtles the Next Mutation.
Transformers Devestation is still surprisingly really good, and definitely the best of the Platinum Activision trio.
Amazing game indeed
It's Bayonetta except now she's a truck and voiced by Peter Cullen, and I'm okay with that.
I’d say legend of Korra is the best out of the trio, Tmnt was ok but I didn’t really like Devastation much
I got bored after the first boss and never went back to it
