      @@MattMcMuscles Bafflingly, though, the fight it comes from - Thermopylae - was against the Persians, and decidedly not the Romans. I think it was so they didn't have to make more assets than they had to.
      (Said battle is also ~500 years before Tiberius' reign. But, you know. This game is charming because it's shamelessly stupid as hell, not in spite of it.)

      Favorite Spartan Quotes:
      When Phillip II of Macedon (Alexander the Great's dad) sent a message to Sparta, asking whether he should come as friend or foe, the response was one word "Neither"
      When he got impatient and wrote back, saying: "You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city." The Spartans responded with just: "If"
      He didn't come.

    This is one of my favorite games of all time.
    I finished it approximately 43 times. All difficulties. Only sword&shield, only trident, only double swords, only hammer runs. No magic runs.
    Yes, I counted.
    I had a LOT of time in middle school.

    • @girolamoesposito6131
      @girolamoesposito6131 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah this game was the shit! I remember being so schocked when I first played the hard difficulty and the amount of enemies was tripled or something.
      At first I was like "how is anyone supposed to beat this?" but then on my 2nd hard playthrough everything went smooth and I was so surprised how much I got better at the game.
      Question, since you played it this so many times, can you tell if the weapons actually have an impact on gameplay?
      Except for the giant barbarian hammer, all the weapons seem to have the same functionality to me.
      Fast with goodish range and crowd control, I wonder if a tier list would be possible.
      If there are any other things an expert like you would like to share then by all means suit yourself :D

    • @Picia000123
      @Picia000123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can tell you right now, Hammer is almost impossible to beat levels in Athens. You're actually slower when you equip it, so all the missions where you have to protect philosophers or anybody really becomes too hard. For those missions only I would switch to literally any other weapon, since with those The Spartan runs normally, with twin blades he is the quickest I believe.
      If we talk tier list, I would give it like this:
      S: Trident/Spear
      A: Twin Blades
      B: Sword & Shield
      C: Hammer
      The Trident has awesome range, good damage, fairly fast attack, nice finisher and in my opinion the best magic, which engulfs you in flames and you become untouchable and deal fire damage to anyone you touch. It's an amazing spell in a game like this, since it gets crowds off of you AND you get additional damage for some time.
      Twin Blades are pretty good, they are the quickest, move you around the enemy when you attack and generally tend to give you the most crowd control. Their weakness is less damage and lack of poise damage (they don't hit enemies out of attacks that easily or don't break their shield) and weak finisher. Their magic spell creates a giant electric blast that knocks back your enemies. It's a useful spell for clearing space, but doesn't deal that much damage.
      Sword & Shield is the first weapon you get, it's the Ryu of the game, good damage, good range, good poise damage, good finisher, everything nice. The problem stems from it's magic, which transforms all enemies around you to stone (The Medusa shield :P). The fact that it doesn't deal ANY damage and you have to run up and hit the enemies yourself, or if you're in a tight spot, the stone statues might be blocking your way, it's a very situational spell.
      Hammer sucks. Which blows, because I really like it's finishing move, the spell etc. But it slows down your character, it attacks slowly, it deals the most damage and poise damage but enemies can hit you out of it easily. Its spell is you hitting the ground and all enemies get knocked up into the sky. It's really cool and deals a lot of damage but DAMN this weapon is not good.
      That's everything I think, hope it was helpful. :)

      @@Picia000123 Damn, I didn't get a notification so I thought you didn't reply.
      So it's a pretty linear affair then.
      Each weapon you get is supposed to be mostly better than the last.
      Except the hammer for some reason.
      I always had a feeling it was pretty underwhelming.
      I remember when the game gives it to you and says "hey, try it on some of these guys :)" but I had an incredibly hard time just surviving against the barbarians while using it (I even died a couple times right there) so I never gave the weapon much thought.
      I thought maybe I just didn't figure out how to use it properly but it turns out it just straight up sucks, huh?
      What a shame, that's a waste of a weapon.
      Must have been quite a challenge to do a hammer-only run.
      Now I really want to try it for myself!
      Looks like I just found a reason to dust off my old copy of the game.
      Thanks for the insightful reply!

    Wait, King Leonidas wasn’t even alive when Tiberius was Roman Emperor!
    I don’t think this video game is historically accurate the way Dynasty Warriors or Valkyria Chronicles were.

    • @JasynSuin
      @JasynSuin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      To be fair, there WERE multiple kings of Sparta named Leonidas. Of course, by the time Rome was an empire, Sparta was no longer an independent city state and had been forced to become part of the Achaean League (in part by Rome), but details shmetails.

    • @professorBofFPU
      @professorBofFPU 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Zanna I say if they were gonna play fast and loose with history, they might as well have gone all the way. Instead of Tiberius, make the Emperor Caligula and have him act like a Jojo villain, since he was insane anyway.

    • @Nikelaos_Khristianos
      @Nikelaos_Khristianos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tiberius was a legitimately cooked dude by the end of his life.
      He lived out the last of days on an estate on Sardinia (I think, please don't quote, need to fact-check), and spent his time throwing prostitutes off a cliff. Normally those kinds of stories get dismissed by historians, and rightly so, but this one actually had a decent amount of worrying and disturbing credibility. If it wasn't 11 at night and in a TH-cam comment section I would do a reference list.

    • @kirionDK
      @kirionDK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't think historical accuracy was on the list when this game was made. Sure the Greeks and Romans were advanced for their time but I'm pretty sure they didn't have Jaegers and lightning swords. Regardless, I have some real fond memories of this game.

    • @JasynSuin
      @JasynSuin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nikelaos_Khristianos I think it was actually the island of Capri, which is in the Bay of Naples; he had a massive villa there that he effectively ruled from for most of his reign. And yeah, he was absolutely nuts by the end, apparently; Caligula, by comparison, was actually a fairly sane ruler for the first few months of his reign, but he fell extremely ill, or may have even been poisoned (it was so bad his hair fell out), and afterward is when he started to become more eccentric. Still, a few of his acts of insanity are possibly misinterpreted; from what I recall, he was apparently being sarcastic when he suggested making his horse Incitatus a consul, insulting members of the Senate and other elites by saying the horse would do a better job, or that the position was so meaningless an animal could fill it. And considering that he had a three mile pontoon bridge stretched across the Bay of Baiae, then had it covered in soil so he could ride his horse across it while wearing the breastplate of Alexander the Great as a 'take that' to an astrologer who said he had as much chance of becoming emperor as he did of riding across the bay on horseback, it certainly fits his character.

      This game takes a *lot* of liberties with that kind of thing
      I mean you end up being able to cast lightning from your swords, turn enemies to stone, and kill mythological beasts - historical accuracy probably wasn't a priority.

    It was meant to be a Total War spin-off, but apparently it was becoming too "history nerdy". So they made it more like budget God of War. Because that sells... Apparently.
    Also, apparently there is another Total Warrior game, sort of, I'm not actually completely sure, but it's about Vikings.

      I wonder if it was inspired from God of War. The games are only months apart so I don't know how long this game was developed.

    • @Nikelaos_Khristianos
      @Nikelaos_Khristianos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lennydale92 Probably not. Development within the industry is seldom collaborative to that extent given the lack of interplay between Sony Santa Monica and Creative Assembly.
      I just used "budget God of War" as a way of summarising the game easily.

      It's more recognizable as a game set in ancient Greece than God of war.

    Did the gamecube version have less content? I remember at some point you just have the magic bow and the game never acknowledges it.
