Thank you for giving the SNES version its due. Was absolutely one of my favorites. Raphael's spin attack into the German suplex combo was the ultimate cheese against karai
Samurai Shodown had a meter, but originally it only served to make your attacks more powerful when filled (super moves were not introduced in the series until SS 2)
Those are more like Desperation Moves like the ones in Fatal Fury. Yes, AOF has a meter but is used for every special move and you need to charge it manually, doesn't fill with your attacks like a modern meter is. I believe that TMNT is the one that premiered the traditional Super Meter.
Aska was actually going to be Mitsu from TMNT 3. You can find this out by the prototype of the game. I believe she was changed into Aska due to TMNT 3 doing poorly.
I was the perfect age when this came out, so it and Mortal Kombat were the two games that got the most playtime on my SNES for about a year or so. I had hundreds of TMNT figures, but was just starting to "outgrow" them (I still kept collecting them, but felt too old to play with them anymore), so this game for me was the perfect thing at just the right time.

Love your retrospectives and this is another great one. As for your question about the first Super Meter I believe the first game to use one was Art of Fighting in 92, although it did look much rougher than this.
@@opiumized Yes but I'd argue that one doesn't quite count. It's not a resource meter per se, as you cannot consume it using any moves. It just alerts you when your character "enrages" so to speak and is purely timer based in terms of consumption. SS2 had super moves that consumed that meter, however it came out in 1994.
I don't think AoF's meter counts, as it's fundamentally a different type of meter. It's meter was for special moves, not super moves or even enhanced specials. It also refilled differently, as it started out full each round and would rebuild based on time alone, not by building it up using attacks or by taking damage.

did some research turns out the super meter mechanic was introduced or first used in Samurai Shodown (July 7th 1993.) before TMNT Tournament Fighters (Sep 4 1993). Pretty close in releases, but Samsho was first.
Wow, that I'd never seen the NES port... that looks amazing for the console... looks more like a modern 'throwback' indie game than an actual game that launched on the system.
After seeing the reveal trailer for the “Cowabunga Collection” that video brought me here. Well done Matt! I played the living hell out of the Genesis version as a child but later on would experience the SNES version. Much later though, I wound up paying a pretty penny for a copy of the NES version that I found at a retro game store in NYC & it was best $200 I ever spent for a complete copy as rare as it is. As a fighting game enthusiast, I spent a lot of time with each version analyzing the differences and what were the best strategies for winning matches (& believe me it varies as you know). I just find each version so fascinating not just because they are fighting games but just the fact that they are really the only games that are “ports” for multiple consoles but they don’t even feel like it, they feel like their own games with their own merits. Even each game has their own storylines (albeit short and simple ones none the less). With this all said, I stand hopeful that the “Cowabunga Collection” may make small alterations for these games (like make the bosses playable or simple tutorials for newer players for example). I’m probably asking too much for an HD collection of 11 games though lol! Ultimately though, I want a remake of Tournament Fighters done by today’s fighting game standards though. That would be a sight to see! Maybe combining all the best elements of all 3 Versions of the game’s storylines would make it a nice touch. I really see, only 3 companies taking this on, Nearherrealm (whole have already included the Turtles as DLC in Injustice 2 so I feel like there is a leg up there), Namco/Bandai or Capcom as long as their is a focused and devoted team of developers who are willing to take the old and mix it with the new. Who knows though, we will only wait and see what the future holds. :)
I was aware of the TMNT CE and it's great so far. Guess there's a more advanced iteration of that in the works? This video led me down a rabbit hole, I didn't know TMNT x JL existed. Glad I do now, very cool Mugen project.

I had the SNES version of this game. I never knew the Genesis version was different. It was a pretty fun game and I got a lot of enjoyment playing it with friends back iin middleschool.
I absolutely loved and still love this game on SNES! I think I regard it as a much better game than most, but oh well. Great memories of playing it with friends as a kid on Friday nights.
I have conflicted memories of this game. I love this game sooo much but it was the last game my dad bought for me before he unfortunately passed away. This for SNES and Streets of Rage 2 are all I wanted to play after I heard the unfortunate news.
I loved the attitude of this game. I guess they were going for that teenager demographic because these turls were fierce and the music gave the sense of urgency and seriousness. Seeing Shredder fighting Leonardo at 14:30 is what Im talking about. They look like they are actually fighting; Like shredder is actually trying to BEAT. HIS. A$$ haha.
I had the SNES version as a kid. I was bummed out because i thought it would be like turtles in time instead of a fighting game. Still had some great times with this game playing with my friends and drawing the instrunction booklet art, never could beat Karai though.
This game is so underrated as a fighter game compared to other games of its type being able to do each character’s finishing move by just pressing 2 buttons unlike mortal kombat with their hard to do fatalities was what really made me love this game plus the gameplay was really good and better than I thought it would be Michael Angelo’s finishing moves was my favorite
The time is so ripe to bring this game back into the spot light with a modern update. Power Rangers BftG has freaking Street Fighter characters crossing over into it, the nostalgia hype is REAL.
Been meaning to play these really soon... grew up with it on the snes at some point. Honestly pretty memorable and felt like a real challenge to finish!
Damn, when I least expect it, Matt pimps more MUGEN on us right at the end, like this whole retrospective was just a build up to tell everyone TMNT v Justice League exists. ADMIT IT!
Even though i put more time into the genesis version, the time i spent with the snes version was just more fun in general. Not just because of the aesthetics but also because the gameplay felt much more satisfying since "combos" don't really exist in the genesis version.
Tournamnet Fighters on the SNES was legendary. I remembr playing this game before I knew how to read so I didnt know what was going on, BUT IT DIDINT MATTER. The thing I love about this game is how serious this game was. They're not smiling and fighting, they were tough. The fights were serious, as a fighting game should be. The music was beautiful. In fact Imma look up the ost right now!
It's obvious that the sound, entirely, was done the way it was as to simulate the sound you got from arcade cabinet speakers. As an arcade junkie kid, this clicked immediately. Cabinet speakers/sounds were often they way they were to stand out via loudness and aggressiveness to grab attention among the mass of other titles in the gallery.
I really enjoyed this video. I loved the Mega Drive version, but it was just a weekend rental with some friends back in the day. I'm shocked there were two other version and I never heard about them.
I have a vague memory of this game. I remember seeing it being played at someone's house when I was a little kid and I remember the shark character a bit, but I never got a chance to pick up and play it. Might have to find a SNES and track down the game.
I am so happy you brought up the sad fact that there were only three versions of the game. That bothers me too, and I would love to see a modern reskinned version with Mikey taking his rightful place on the cover!!
TMNT Tournament Fighters on SNES is the REAL version imo, the Sega Genesis & NES are just cheap knock offs for the lesser systems. The SNES version is a true gem! One of the best Ninja Turtles game AND one of the best fighting games of the 90s. on par with Street Fighter, better imo
Ah yes, the SNES version consumed many a weekend when I was a kid, playing it with my sister. (She'd kick my ass when ever she played Aska... But I still had fun.)
One of the main changes I noticed is in the North America release is, Aska's jiggle physics were censored out meaning they had to give her a different win pose and in the Super Famicom version her shorts were way shorter meaning that also had to be "Fixed" for the North American release of the game, and the Monicure change is just Konami, being Konami.
As a fan of fighting games and TMNT, this was one of the games I was most excited to get when I was a kid, especially because for a while I couldn't find it anywhere.

did some research turns out the super meter mechanic was introduced or first used in Samurai Shodown (July 7th 1993.) before TMNT Tournament Fighters (Sep 4 1993). Pretty close in releases, but Samsho was first.
You can't do supers in SamSho1. The Rage meter only increases your damage.
Man, I can't believe I live in a timeline where all 3 versions of this game are gonna get rereleased in the same collection
Wow, that I'd never seen the NES port... that looks amazing for the console... looks more like a modern 'throwback' indie game than an actual game that launched on the system.
Never knew about the desperation moves on the Genesis version. All I remember was Karai was definitely extremely difficult.
Ultimately though, I want a remake of Tournament Fighters done by today’s fighting game
standards though.
Beating an already cheap AI on the hardest level is how you get the real ending for the sega version. Spamming casey Jones is the only way to beat this version
Unfortunately, the best ending isn't much different than the default one!
I spam April's sliding low-kick, followed up with some throws.
I loved the SNES version as a kid. But TMNT is seriously one of my favorite things in life - still like 30 years later.
This reminds me how I always wanted a combo counter in TF for the SNES. I used to main Don and Mike.
I had the SNES version of this game. I never knew the Genesis version was different. It was a pretty fun game and I got a lot of enjoyment playing it with friends back iin middleschool.
I absolutely loved and still love this game on SNES! I think I regard it as a much better game than most, but oh well. Great memories of playing it with friends as a kid on Friday nights.
i really like the NES tournament fighters, it's not like a traditional fighting game at all, it's a simple fighter but very addicting
I have conflicted memories of this game. I love this game sooo much but it was the last game my dad bought for me before he unfortunately passed away. This for SNES and Streets of Rage 2 are all I wanted to play after I heard the unfortunate news.
Damn, now I wanna hear the SNES OST, it really was great! I really liked the sound mixing of that game, had a lot of "omph".
I must have rented the NES version a dozen times from JR's Video World in Reynoldsville, PA.
The SNES version was my jam when I was a kid. I actually didn't know there were other versions, it was really cool to see them.
I had the Genesis version as a kid. I loved the dark tone to it and the weird eldritch style of the stages.
Now I want Max to do a boss rage and aim for Karai! XD
ADMIT IT!
As a collector of game boy fighting games I would have LOVED a game boy port of this. 🤩
Yeah I have weird tastes. 🤣
I remember I got the SNES version for my birthday back when I was a young lad in 1994. Still holds up!
Killer episode. Love your content. Thank you for for putting out such entertaining videos.
Even though i put more time into the genesis version, the time i spent with the snes version was just more fun in general. Not just because of the aesthetics but also because the gameplay felt much more satisfying since "combos" don't really exist in the genesis version.
Very happy to see a TMNT TF Genesis tech expert in the comments. Hope you are doing well and thanks for your awesome videos!
I love SNES tf. Thanks for this. I didn’t even know of the other two versions!
I really enjoyed this video. I loved the Mega Drive version, but it was just a weekend rental with some friends back in the day. I'm shocked there were two other version and I never heard about them.
Tournament Fighters for the SNES is great, one of the best fighters for the system. The NES version is just impressive
I have a vague memory of this game. I remember seeing it being played at someone's house when I was a little kid and I remember the shark character a bit, but I never got a chance to pick up and play it. Might have to find a SNES and track down the game.
The NES version has the best soundtrack I have ever heard in a game, period.
Something tells me this video is about to get a LOT more views after the announcement of The Cowabunga Collection.
I often put the snes TF ost, when I’m drawing to this day, it is an amazing Soundtrack!
Very fond memories of playing this on the SNES.
If TF had just included Usagi Yojimbo in the SNES version it would have been the complete package. It's still so good though.
Love the shout out to Aska's stage. Love that theme.
The SNES Soundtrack is amazing. It’s not the best fighting game but I still love it.
As a fan of fighting games and TMNT, this was one of the games I was most excited to get when I was a kid, especially because for a while I couldn't find it anywhere.
13:03 Art of Fighting was the very first. It's from 1992
Also Samurai Shodown
@@jon1580 Those are meters but not SUPER meters like we are used to. In Samsho only increases your damage, and AOF's meter is used for every special move and you have to manually charge it, the "super moves" are more like the DM in Fatal Fury. I believe that TMNT TF has the badge of the first fighting game with a traditional super meter.
I miss the days when two ports could be entirely different games
