i dont think alot of people here really appreciate this car but to be honest, this has done a phenomenal job in india where it is known as the renault duster. the reason alot of people from other countries dont appreciate this might have to do with their road conditions. in india the roads are horrible. absolutely horrible. and this champ takes in all the bad bits of the roads with no fuss at all. also i think because its done so good in India, the manufacturer has taken indian market seriously because our model lineup has got over 8-10 models! with 3 engine options and 2 transmissions! and in 2016 the company even introduced an amt.
in any case, kudos to renault/dacia for making this little beast.

After reading a lot of the comments on this page it's clear people have their favourites and they have their dislikes. The reliability stats on these vehicles come from all over the world so can't all be false. I'm 35, I've been driving 15 years and I've owned all sorts of cars from a battered £75 Capri to a 4yr old Alfa 166 (ironically over 5 years the most reliable car I've ever owned!)
So many car marques use cross brand part these days even buying a Nissan or a Toyota doesn't mean your engine isn't French, or it wasn't put together in Poland etc....
Don't hate on people for not wanting to spend a lot on motoring, most cars sit on the driveway for 22-23hrs a day just depreciating. I think for people who just want peace of mind, a nice long warranty and like their cars new, these Dacia cars seem great value.

I've had a 4X2 Duster for over a year now. It is very practical, very comfortable and very easy to drive. The exterior design is simple but the chunky, rugged looks do impress (as does the price tag!). Interior-wise, the UK-spec cars are much better than the 2011-2013 models sold in Europe, but keep an eye out for the new 2014 one, it is has been improved dramatically.
I bought mine with the 1.6L 105bhp naturally aspirated petrol engine. If you plan on going on the highway, avoid this engine like the plague. At low speeds it packs a punch and eager to drive, but get it past 100km/h and it feels gutless. Mated with the 5-speed gearbox, it is noisy and very thirsty and I have to keep thrashing the engine to keep in speed. If you're going for one of the current models, go for the 1.5L 110bhp dCi turbocharged diesel or wait for the new model and go for their excellent new 1.2L 125bhp turbocharged petrol engine, both mated to a 6 speed.
Aside from the poor engine choice, the car is functional and great. Highly recommend it with the dCi engine.

last winter I saw Audi stacked on the side of the road in snow and the Duster was passing beside it without a problem. This 4x4 car beats VW Touareg when it comes to off road capabilities especially because of its ground clearance. The interior is cheap but for what it was built it does pretty well. If you would drive a lot in town or on a motorway I think an old Audi is preferable. If you live at country side or you want a car that goes everywhere and I really mean everywhere I will go with Duster and the rest of the money I would use them for travelling :)

***** I used to have an A4 (from new, 2003 model). Possible the most infuriating car I ever owned. It had a constant central locking problem, really poor interior design for oddments. Anything over a light bend and my phone would be flown under the drivers seat. The ride was 'firm' at best. It broke down as soon as it got damp and the turbo blew at 55,000 miles (just as I got rid of it). I really can not recommend Audi for reliability. I would say they are average at best. This is from a C250 owner with 125,000 miles on the clock and no problems! Oh and I have just bought a base model 4x4 Duster for winter. So far, it is amazingly capable. Can't wait for the first snow to take it to the mountains.

TheCamshafter Not according to this Autocar/What Car? report, a Duster will loose £4,000 over 3 years, that is 40% depreciation! Anything else is likely to loose that as soon as you sign your name on the document. www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/comparison-best-depreciation-busting-cars?page=1#comment-162830

It amazes me how much the auto industry spoils us...I Imagine that if I was offered this car at the beginning of the 90´s, I would be glad, but nowadays I find myself looking at details such as "those wheels are made of steel" and "look at that wimpy thin steering wheel", "damn these hard shiny plastics" and such. But it seems like a good rugged basic car, and yet makes me feel like I am in the 90´s. Good review. I like the fact he doesn´t mock the car.

    • @kristiaan1
      @kristiaan1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Florin Iluca Yeti isn't a bad car, but the Duster is cheaper, more durable, simpler and easier to repair, so yes, let's say in Russia or African countries it will be a better option than Yeti. In Europe, obviously, it is a bit of a farmer's car, but I quite like it for being honest and for the money a great piece of car.
Because not the cheap car is dissapointing, but an expensive and BAD car is.

Dacia is a Romanian company (owned by Renault, but still Romanian). In Romania all roads are full of CRATERS, not pot-holes.... CRATERS. After I leave home, when I get to work my brains are already fried by all the bumps in the road. That's why the suspension is good, because it's built to roll on Romanian roads... :))

+DarthGhitza I'm in Sofia, and the road are equally terrible. I have a 4x4 in 'Duster' trim which is this base model with a radio and boot mat thrown in. It comes with ASR and independent suspension too. The ride is really good on these rough roads and it held its own off road in Bansko last winter, ½m snow and -20. Also copes well with +40. I just wish it had air con.

Here's some reasons: A monovolume or StationWagon don't have nearly the ground clearance that a SUV has nor do they have suspensions that deal so easily with potholes and bad roads(which Romania is full of). Also,a SUV looks MUCH better than a Monovolume or SW.A lot of people just want a bigger hatchback with more room and big ground clearance and good suspension for bad roads. And for those people a SUV like the Duster is just what they need.

The Duster is sold in Latin America under the Renault brand, and it is manufactured in Colombia, I watched a video about it, and even though the factory and its processes seem outdated and rudimentary, the car seems to be well built. I dont know about its reliability, but I must say that the only thing keeping me from buying it is that the 4WD version is not available in Automatic (I know driving stick, too, but I like comfort when I drive, specially under traffic jam conditions).

I drive a late 2006 Focus, I did a valuation on it the other day and this morning WhatCar called me and asked me what car I was looking at afterwards. After I said I was interested in the Ford Kuga, he directed me to this car.

Billy Johnson Check honestjohn Sandero review. Dacias are studied for harsh conditions markets (east, russia, Afrika) so they are robust. Your own little experience is not relevant compared with a reliability rating. My grandpa Clio had no problem when my uncle Escort broke distribution. Dacia is way more reliable than ford in reliability ratings.

In fairness with air con, in the UK there's really no need for it. It failed on my car a long time ago, and I COULD pay lots of money to have it fixed and then I COULD make sure I run it regularly to ensure it stays working but really with an English summer...it's more pleasant and cheaper to crack a window...

From all romanians, thanks for a fair pronouncing of the brand's name.
For all others criticising and generalising: please try reading a little of our history. The fact you were born in USA, UK, France or any other developed country is a matter of luck. You could be in my place, you could be unfairly called 'gypsy' and thrownes stones at. And it is not pleasant. So if you all really are smarter than us, try proving by not being so mean. Please.

No, Kryptication isn't wrong, the entry level Dusters will depreciate like rocks because they have no equipment at all, but yeah a top of the range model can hold it's value well.

Higher ground clearance. My dad's '99 Avensis been in places and then through them most modern 4x4 wouldn't go, so with only 2WD can go pretty deep in sh!t. That would be nice feature just to get a bit higher off the ground to protect the car's under and less water in the cabin :) Really like the idea of Duster!

What's the latest on the rust problem with these cars? Last I saw people were saying that Dacia offered to fix the problem (in the UK at least) but many people were saying that Dacia went quiet when they contacted them about it, and I saw others saying that the "fix" didn't actually solve the problem.

Depends if you want a new car or not i.e. manufacturer warranty, pleasure of driving a untouched car, newer engines that may not be available on older versions e.g. the 1.5 dCi which is definitely better than older 1.9 or 2.0 diesels.
Still... if comfort is the main criteria, indeed, an older but better speck-ed car sounds good.

While I think theses look hideous, the idea of having to get your own stereo isn’t a bad idea, some standard systems are crap and you don’t have to wait till you paid the car off before you can tamper.

Here's my thoughts on the car, think about it. Dacia duster goes for £12k and it's a big car, for the price it is. Sure it's not the best, but atleast it brings you a to b. Now compare it to a smart fourtwo, you're paying the same price for a two seater which has limited space for carrying items. Think logically, stop being so materialistic.

same as BMW- you must pay for basic option like alloy wheels, quality stereo or park sensors. Dacia is better value though.

BMW's are'nt as good as they were before, in BMW 335i you dont even have an oil stick to check your oil, so I'd rather have the "plastic peace of shit" as you call it, maintain it cheaply, than the BMW which will cost me a fortune just to check if I need to fill up the oil in my engine.

you're right, a BMW if breaks nothing can fix it whereas these budget cars can be repaired easy. If you want proper BMW with basic safety options you need to pay extra. I got a newer 1 series and the problems keep coming, piece of crap overpriced junk. Doesn't even have fog lights nor reverse sensors.

If you really are the owner of BMW...I don't think you would say ''piece of crap'',because it really isn't.I've had 4 BMW's in the past, and last one was 2012 320d..it was simply amazing!!!!! Now I have Nissan Pathfinder, but that's different story..

if you'll ask me I kinda like it's not included... I always hate the cheapo stereo which comes in entry level cars as "standard" but you know you'll just need to replace it the next day and spend some other good bucks

Unless we live on a farm the 2 wheel drive model is the one we really need?, where have you been living recently LA. as far as I remember our winter has been the coldest for over 50 years plus. So for me 4 wheel drive is becoming the norm now as far as I am concerned anyway.

Now you buy this car full option with 5000-7000 euro. Not to much depreciation in 10 years. You can't say this about other cars from 2011 that you can buy now with 2000 euro from 15000 euro 10 years ago. You cheapest Duster on sale is 3500 Euro. So that is only 60% depreciation in 10 years.
