Eastern Europeans love them, perfect utilitarian workhorse... particularly in rural areas and on farms. Seen loads of them in rural Hungary, Poland etc.
I bought one new in 2013, 1.5 diesel does 60 mpg (if driven tidy) 35,000 miles on the clock, has 6 gears + reverse and it's the only car I've had in 50 years of driving that I got booked for speeding! Same tyres all round, flies through the MOT and is as comfy to drive as the Land Rover Freelander I kept for just 3 years. It's a BRILLIANT CAR!
It's refreshing to see someone extolling the virtues of the basic car. The more complex a car, the more you'll spend fixing it. It WILL go wrong. The most reliable cars I've owned were a Lada Niva and Land Rover Series 3.
I owned a Renault Duster from 2012-2014 here in India, and i found it simple, rugged and dependable..Never had any complaints and i really respected the car... I loved it...

@@dominykasstankevicius90 id argue the point although they are cheap to buy new you can spend less on a better used car. I recently bought a 2015 Volvo V60 with not many miles and for a much cheaper price. 200Bhp, huge room, better tech, way better safety, fantastic reliability, fantastic MPG and hardly any Road Tax. 4x4 version uses a Nissan 4x4 system so it’s a go anywhere work horse. When people spend a fortune on a Land Rover or any other posh 4x4 then won’t take it to the environment it was designed for in case they scratch it. But then if you do damage your high end 4x4 it’ll cost more than a Dacia duster to fix it.
it's not quite "go anywhere work horse" it's an automatic, non lockable diffsit's pretty low end 4x4. i think that fiat panda it's better on 4x4 because it's lighter. i am thinking about second gen panda, not the latest.
Isnt this what a Land Rover used to be: a no BS “tool car”? Im not to keen on the (lack of) safety, but the car is so honest - and thats an unusual feature these days...
There is no 'lack of safety' about these cars. NCAP is all about electronic driver aids these days. They lose marks for not having daft stuff like lane departure warnings and auto braking. As long as you can drive properly you shouldn't need them. I think the entire Duster range got marked down 1 star because the base model didn't have an audible seatbelt warning. All the others did. Ridiculous really.
@@retrogeezer So you are basically dismissing, many years of development in car safety? Maybe we should skip the seat belts, and simply tie ourselves down, by a piece of rope - or just “hang on for dear life”.... I have personally experienced how modern safety systems, as well as the active safety from a well handling modern car, can save your life. I had this experience last winter, on a dark and icy autobahn near Berlin. I will go for the safest car I can get, at all times. Driving 50000KMs annually, Im happy that its not in this Dacia. I will take anything, that will increase the survival rate - but I agree, that the driver is still the most important safety factor. I just wont disregard the remaining safety factors.
@@flemmingsorensen5470 I'm not dismissing it, I'm saying the car does not have a lack of safety. They do have ABS and electronic stabilty control, they also have seat belts! Do you need a noise to tell you to put yours on? Auto braking and lane assistance are only going to save you having a crash if you are not paying attention. They make people think they are invincible in their little carcoon and driving standards diminish. Facts are statistically you are more likely to die or get injured from falling over while out for a walk or doing DIY than in a car crash, You best wear a crash helmet next time you go to the park if you are that concerned about your safety.
I bought a 4x4 version 4 years ago as I sometimes have to go over rough tracks. Its awesome. Tough, comfortable, reliable, spacious and great fun to drive. As the owner of three Discovery's in the past, give me the Duster any day - especially when I visit the pumps!
I love the Duster. They are good looking, reliable, parts are cheap... Its a perfect car for the countryside or farms. And you don't care if you scratch it because everything is cheap and easy to replace. I hate when people judge it for its quality. Its a sub 13k £ SUV. What do you expect
when one of humanity's biggest enemies today is high blood pressure... Walking is the first think people should do a lot more of... More people die from high blood pressure in hospitals in Las Vegas alone vs covid world wide, each day... My dad an expert on high blood pressure, he invented 6 different ways of testing for it.... I think people should use their cars to go places, then switch to their feet to see the places they visit. Cars give you access to walk places you otherwise could not in time for society to call you back to work/duty. When all comes to all, better walking then dead...
Dacia make cars that are for Mr or Mrs sensible, they are like that advert for Ronseal, “Does exactly what it says on the tin” just sensible and cheap motoring. Great honest review sir! I’d certainly buy one.
My partner and I recently bought a Dacia Duster prestige model from 2014 and we love it! It is great for our dogs, with plenty of space for family expansion in the near future and it is so smooth to drive. I don't even miss the 135HP and turbo motor of my old Fiat Punto.
Totally agree. Having a slightly crap and rugged cheap car is a joy. I have a lovely Lexus LS for my weekend car, but bought an ancient and totally reliable Honda Jazz for chucking the dogs in. Not caring about a car is truely liberating. If you prang it it doesn't matter, if it breaks you can fix it yourself for buttons.
@@johnmandragon4830 I have a RR velar which i try and park a million miles away from anything else in the car park .....and a 24 year old defender which i will deliberately park butt tight next to any battered Vauxhall zafira or Renault espace i can find 😂😂😂😂
@@johnmandragon4830 You must be incredibly well off to have so little concern about a car that will probably cost around £9,000 second hand. I must be doing something wrong as I work hard and that's still a lot of money to me.
For me as a fisherman/outdoors person who spends considerable time in country lanes and dirt tracks, two things make this vehicle possibly my next buy, which were not mentioned (1) the high clearance at the bottom, perfect for bouncing along on pot holed, muddy uneven tracks and (2) the equally high front end, allowing you to drive through a moderate river ford perhaps.
Spot on. In wristwatch terms, a Duster is a Casio Gshock. It’s a beater, and everyone even Rolex owners appreciate a good beater. These are super popular in the mountains too, they have great traction up icy hills and you can park them on high curbs in cities.
There is something liberating about having a 'beater' for everyday use, airport and supermarket car parks etc. I'd rather have this and spend the extra on a low depreciating Porsche or similar in the garage for the weekend.
But then what's the point in having millions in the first place if your gonna settle with the very lowest of things, they may aswell not have all that money and work a 9-5 in a factory, my point is, if you've got all that money, bloody enjoy it, ya love once 👌
@@markking9435 It's probably the case they buy something like this as an everyday runabout, something they can use to drive to Waitrose and not be too worried if one of the working class plebs hits it with their door, but at the weekend they have fun in something much more expensive. In fact they might have a posher car too for those visits to the golf club and to pick little Chlyamidia up from boarding school once a decade.
@@markking9435 The point is that most millionaires don't accumulate their money just by high income but by setting priorities with their spending. They may go to the opera every other week or on a safari each year if that's what counts for them - but they don't spend a lot of money on the stuff that isn't important to them. It's a bit like Jay Leno with different priorities - now here is a real car guy spending a lot of money on the metal (though he's made a business of it now) - but go ask a fashion minded person what he thinks of Jay's clothing budget and choices.
I've always appreciated the Dacia line-up, especially the Duster and the Sandero. I think of them as being completely inoffensive. There's nothing inherently wrong with them. Yeah, they're basic and cheap on the inside but... That's fine. That's what the buyer expects. It doesn't need to have fancy electronics and gimmicky infotainment. It is just simple, honest motoring and in a time where you can get a car with dynamic this and sensing that, it is super refreshing seeing cars like this being sold new. It doesn't look terrible, it doesn't drive terrible and it doesn't feel terrible. It's just a good all around car for a simple man. I don't know how anybody could dislike it. P.s. the person who dislikes this video drives a Juke.
Yup, if I want a fun car I make it my weekend car, my daily driver is a tool that will be worn down due to the unmaintained roads I drive to work and all the vast stretches of wild life, gravel, dirt I can't drive a nice car daily here.
Great review, spot on! I recently bought a 2011 Duster 1.6 petrol (4wd) and I love the basic no-nonsense character. Driving with the essentials only, very refreshing.
Hi ! I am from Argentina. here are many Dusters, I have Renault Duster 2012, engine 1.6 (K4M)- 165 thousand km. I use it to go to work, I do 300km per week and in 9 years I never had a problem, I live in a rural area and on vacation we went to the snow in the south and the desert mountains in the north. Very simple, faithful and economical.
We were given one in Cyprus when hiring and would have to say it was brilliant and coped with all off road requirements..its just Badge snobbery that prevents many from owning one..we loved it.
Apparently, the new Sandero is a huge step up in terms of kit and quality, so maybe future Dacias will feel more like their mainstream competitors. Hopefully this won't have a negative impact on dependability.
One of your best Sir. Had one as a rental for a couple of weeks. Even My 6 and 8 year old girls were slagging me. Grim. But then again, I like cars. Your assessment is spot on. Keep ‘em comin!!
Absolutely brilliant once again sir! I’m just a boring (on line) school teacher and your evening reviews are a highlight of my day (I know the roads too around Buxton as I used to live in Taddington). Fortunately I drive the best two cars in the world that you can buy for under £12K combined ... a 5k ‘10’ reg Audi A4 TFSI Quattro Avant (full leather etc, no oil probs) and a 7K ‘14’ reg VW Golf Conv (light leather, dark purple). My road thinks I’, loaded ... keep up the variety of ages of vehicle ... don’t please come too new ... the older cars are what have brought you such success and deservedly so!
My grandfather has a 2016 prestige model, I have to say I absolutely love driving it, extremely comfortable and relaxing to drive, comparing that to an F11 bmw 520D I’d much rather take the duster any day of the week, it just drives so much better
We (wife and I) bought the most basic Access model for 9k in 2013. It just passed the latest MoT with no faults, in fact almost like new. We love it - drives like a big Tonka toy. A K&N air filter, decent spark plugs, good stereo, and a set of alloys really help though.
Great review, I had a diesel 4x4 Duster when the first came out in 2013. It was very reliable and cheap to run, also a good tow car for my caravan. Land Rover would do well to make something similar as an entry car.
I have had the 1.5 6 geared diesel since 2015, 4wd. I live in the countryside of south west Sweden. For me it is a perfect car it takes you there and back without any problem. Not one single issue with in these years, it simply works.
Finally you done a video on a duster, the color is really nice and I think there good looking as well. No nonsense, simple suv just how they should be. I can see why they are so popular these days I think they tick all the boxes. Great video!
I have a 2016 4wd diesel. The best points, it goes anywhere, good in snow, the 6 speed is great, always start in 2nd gear unless it is a hill start, the gear ratios are good, just need to get used to. Great load size. Downsides, paintwork not great, dents easily, carpets poor and headlights could be better. Love it.
These are very under rated cars. The latest version is great value for money and looks pretty cool in a rugged sort of way. There is a revised model coming sometime this year with improved tech and some bodywork tweaks. When you pay close on 20k or more for a supermini from mainstream manufacturers, this makes the new Dacia Duster a bargain. Great review thanks.
I ordered a Duster access the moment it was released (internet order only back then, think it was around Nov 2010), got an Indian built access for under £9k OTR. It had electric windows, ice white paint all colour coded, roof rails - in fact quite a lot for the money. I loved that car, you got pre wired IDE fittings so you could add your own choice of stereo which I wish they still did on new cars. Finally traded it in when the annual tax got silly on the 1.6 petrol engine. Never had a problem except the heating never really worked from new but I lived with that.
Another great video Matt. I love the idea of something basic that gets the job done but the Duster has one massive negative, its crash worthiness. It scores a shocking 3 stars in the Euro NCAP crash worthiness test. I'm happy to sacrifice the bells and whistles in the interests of cheap motoring, but never the safety of me and my family. I may get some flack for this!!
@@JJ-ic6pn Agree. I have the 2013 car and would buy another if the safety were better. Instead I'm looking elsewhere. The 3 star NCAP data is old though, based on the 2017 car. The 2022 model has all new panels tec but we don't know if it gets a better score because it hasn't been tested (yet?). That said the crash worthiness is respectable. That wasn't the prime reason for the lost stars - it was mainly down to the comparative lack of active safety mechanisms like auto braking etc.
It's all the so called "safety" gadgets, i.e. lane assist, anti lock brakes, electronic whatever, that are to the cost, are expensive to repair, and are better at making dealers money in parts and repairs, then they are at adding to safety.
Great review.. Just bought a brand new special edition duster 😊 Drives really well, Air con, 360 degree camera, android auto & apple carplay, sat nav, Bluetooth, blind spot detection, 1.2 litre turbo engine as used in the Mercedes A class... So a Merc in Romanian overcoat for £13500!
Hilarious review. I was about to rush out and get one but I regained my senses and realised I ought to do a bit of research on the competitors. Somewhere along the way I began to lose the will to live and then I saw my guitar and everything was just fine again... :)
When I was looking for a Fiat Panda 4x4 I did consider a duster for all of around 5 mins! You get so much more with the Panda 4x4 for the same, if not less money, 2nd hand anyway!! More style, more fun, definitely more quirkiness! Alloy wheels, nicer interior, aircon, electric heated mirrors, electronic stability control, mine has rear privacy glass, aircon, reverse sensors, start stop technology, remote central locking, 6 speed gearbox, fog lights, 60/40 split rear seat, cd player, blue and me, uconnect, voice control, phone hook up, leather steering wheel etc etc
I test drove a new Duster 6 years ago, a 1.5TD 4X4 and was really surprised how good it was. I prefer auto though so opted for a Yeti, but fair play Dacia, good cars at crazy low prices.
We recently upgraded from a 2018 Sandero, which we loved, to to a 2021 Duster, with all the gizmos, touch screen, all round electric windows, blah blah, and we love it even more, they've made a lot of improvements, and yet the Dacia Duster of today remains all the things you discussed, Yes we Love our Dacia Duster, and why wouldn't we!!!
I Live in Argentina, Dusters/logans/Sanderos/dokkers are sold here with Renault badge. There's even a dual cab pickup version named Duster Oroch. Here there were 4 versions of duster for that 1st gen. - The basic Dynamic Model, 1.6l manual 5 black bumpers, steel wheels , that same radio as this one on the video, Air conditioning, Front Electric Windows and ... that's it - The Confort Plus version, 1.6l manual 5, all body color, steel wheels like the one in de video, media nav radio with rear camera and park sensors, air conditioning, 4 electric windows and some added trim to make the interior look a little better. - The Privilege version is like a confort plus, but with a 2.0 F4R engine, a 6 manual, alloy wheels and more "luxury" trim inside. -The Privilege 4x4 version adds former nissan 4x4 drivetrain, multiink rear suspension... and thats it. All versions have Only 2 airbags and ABS, ESP or more airbags are not required by law and so not offered. Other SUV's have less boot , less ground clearance , less room on the back seat. I agree that if you need something that you do not care of... its the best choice.
Nice review. I think these look really good from the outside. Fantastic value. A whole car for the same price as a few options would cost on some cars.
I looked at the spec on various SUVs and decided on buying my Dacia Duster Laureate 4x4 new in 2012 . It is really good value for money I disagree with comments about road noise and engine roughness in some reviews. Mine is smooth, quiet, economical and servicing costs are a fraction of the price for other SUVs. I ordered it with every available extra at the time and have since added a tailgate spoiler and rear stainless bumper bar. To buy another make of SUV with the spec mine has would cost double what I paid.
Brilliant on the button review on the duster. I have hired one 3 times fron turkish airports and been delighted as it suited our touring requirements perfectly. Basic and utilitarian sums it up but felt reliable and drove well each time. Interestingly Travelled to UK airport with family of 5 and all our luggage, hand luggage etc in my 2008 RR vogue...and boot was packed solid so always used to worry about what hire car it was going to be as I have yet to have the exact car that I booked. I need not have worried everything fit and to be honest fit better than the vogue. Acres of nasty plastic and flimsy looking vents/ handles/ buttons. Nothing broke and it was actually a really ok car. Perhaps coming from my RR I should have felt more yuk factor towards it but I didn't.
I had a 1.5 4x4 laureate and kept it for 3 years . I agree it was basic but it was a great tool in the snow off road and you do feel like it's a bargain too . Great review btw love your channel.
I haven't forgot the Landcruiser review when all others were falling to pieces, and the Landcruiser worked perfectly fine. Thanks for another great vid!
Truth is most people don't buy a car just to get them from A-B, if they did they would probably look no further than the humble Dacia. Most drivers like style, pizazz, comfort performance and lots of toys, something they can park in front of their neighbours or look back at as they lock the car and walk away. We are a peculiar set of individuals. 😉
Spot on with the shampoo comparison. I'm old enough to remember when you could get Vosine or Head and shoulders and that was it. And if mum and dad were skint, it was dish or bar soap. And yes, Cattle with iPhones is a perfect statement. Thank God for choice and thank God we at least GET a choice. Another superb review. I like cheap cars, warm, dry and still beats the bus!
The class of vehicle you are reviewing makes more enjoyable viewing than some channels. Thoroughly enjoyed the review. As for basic, my first car in 1970 was a 4 year old beetle. Speedo and a petrol gauge, Hot air if you lucky. My current car has lane departure warnings which cannot be turned off permanently. You get tired of the audible bing bong and after 5 minutes you want to rip it out.
I sold Hyundai, Mercedes and Dacia with main dealers. Dacia was my favourite brand to sell. Honest cars that attracted hard working honest customers that were very happy to be buying a new car. I often wonder if I turned down the job at Mercedes would I still be working at Dacia. I began to hate dealing with people after I made the move.
I just bought one, a 2021. Very nice car to drive to work, shops etc. Yes it’s not a racingcar therefor no thrills. But if you choose to buy this car, that is exactly why you buy it. Less stuff that can break, just want it to go from point A to point B with some comfort. And for the pricepoint (read Sweden where EVERYTHING is expensive) it does the job it signed up for. Nothing more, nothing less. It does not lie, it just tells you… what you see is what you get. You know it’s there for you and that it gladly does it’s job with a smile. Oh dear got a bit poetic at the end… but I think you get what I’m saying 😉👍
There is definitely a market for cars like these. I always think it’s almost a good looking car but there was something about the front lights looked a little odd. Love reviews of cars like these, keep ‘em coming Matt 👍🏻
Had one for three and a half years in one of those Mediterranean countries, but I was an unlikely owner: I was 22 when I bought it, it was a 1.5 dCi Laureate 4x4, paid it about as much as my friends were paying their tiny 1.0 Polos and Fiestas, felt like a bloody king, I'll tell you! I guess that's one of the main reasons behind the immense success of this car, it's not a losing competitor to other more expensive small SUVs, its real adversaries are small hatchbacks, and it almost always demolishes those!
I got a 2016 diesel Laureate after watching this amongst other review videos last year. Agree on MPG 56 mixed urban £30 road tax per year and will easily tow 1500kg and still return 32MPG very pleased with mine!

Great review. Here in bungalow city, I see quite a lot of Dacias. It's the ability to buy something new for the cost of a used equivalent that appeals to the recently retired. Great comments on the choice thing, I often wonder if brand loyalty in relation to cars is a method of coping with too much choice.

A colleague of mine in beautiful rural Transylvania has one of these.
I just like how simple it is, it’s a CAR nothing more nothing less

The only down side is that I think its just out of warranty and it can be costly to fix some things. But thats where the money I saved by not buying a new car comes in. Being a reliable car I'm hoping nothing will need to done anyway. Just my 2pence.

When people spend a fortune on a Land Rover or any other posh 4x4 then won’t take it to the environment it was designed for in case they scratch it. But then if you do damage your high end 4x4 it’ll cost more than a Dacia duster to fix it.

Meanwhile the people who PCH all those expensive German cars are living from one pay cheque to the next. It’s a funny old world.

My grandfather has a 2016 prestige model, I have to say I absolutely love driving it, extremely comfortable and relaxing to drive, comparing that to an F11 bmw 520D I’d much rather take the duster any day of the week, it just drives so much better
I have this exact model, love it. It's great for carting the dogs about and never lets me down.
We (wife and I) bought the most basic Access model for 9k in 2013. It just passed the latest MoT with no faults, in fact almost like new. We love it - drives like a big Tonka toy.
A K&N air filter, decent spark plugs, good stereo, and a set of alloys really help though.
Best style of reviewing i've ever seen in this genre
Exactly what is stopping me purchasing one.
@@dsp911 Me too.
Superb video High Peak ! I drove one as a country Vet and I can tell you, Dusters are as tough as nails. And as a 4wd a Offroad beast. Iconic car.

I test drove a new Duster 6 years ago, a 1.5TD 4X4 and was really surprised how good it was. I prefer auto though so opted for a Yeti, but fair play Dacia, good cars at crazy low prices.

There's even a dual cab pickup version named Duster Oroch.
Here there were 4 versions of duster for that 1st gen.
- The basic Dynamic Model, 1.6l manual 5 black bumpers, steel wheels , that same radio as this one on the video, Air conditioning, Front Electric Windows and ... that's it
- The Confort Plus version, 1.6l manual 5, all body color, steel wheels like the one in de video, media nav radio with rear camera and park sensors, air conditioning, 4 electric windows and some added trim to make the interior look a little better.
That’s what I like. A basic utility car. ( My previous cars were the 2cv and the Renault 4.)
One of your best commentaries, witty, informative & grounded.
Glad you enjoyed it

Truth is most people don't buy a car just to get them from A-B, if they did they would probably look no further than the humble Dacia. Actually, quite a fair assumption; our Builder refurbished some Entrance Pillars and within months, they got pranged........... Another example of how my students are. I got called out right in the middle of the Beast from the East (mid-afternoon) by a tenant, when her flatmate knew of a boiler problem earlier in the morning when any snow came. A Jeep Renegade sorted me out........Then I came across your review of the good old Jimny, and I bought a 2006 two years ago. I keep coming back to your videos and came across this one. Had some rust issues with the Jimny and had put it on Autotrader, but recently decided to get the rust sorted and hold onto it. Took the back seats out as I had a dog at the time. Now looking at a Duster as I've discovered from the Wife that sometimes whilst on site, I may need to collect the children from nursery. I've looked at al sorts of 4WD from Panda Cross, Discovery Sport, the more 'Rah Rah' of 4WDs, and then ............came across the Duster. Quite like the no frills approach! Thumbs up video from me! Sorry for the length of this......
Great review. Here in bungalow city, I see quite a lot of Dacias. It's the ability to buy something new for the cost of a used equivalent that appeals to the recently retired. Great comments on the choice thing, I often wonder if brand loyalty in relation to cars is a method of coping with too much choice.
Matt.....what can I say mate..after much pressure I finally get to see you test the much loved Duster...I've had mine 2 years and Uber it in London and despite our roads being rougher than yours up there in the sticks...like a third world country they're so bad..it deals with everything London can throw at it..so so so reliable it's untrue!!! Word of advice if anyone is thinking of buying one...go for the diesel laureate model 2016 onwards fully loaded 45mpg clean ULEZ friendly for London all for £6000 is or less....best bargain. Thanks again Matt from an ex car dealer of 25 yrs for a good honest appraisal
Very humourous, made me laugh out loud! Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
A colleague of mine in beautiful rural Transylvania has one of these. He lives at the end of a rough lane, drives around on some dodgy roads and does the miles to Bucharest and back once a week or so. He loves it, says it's indestructible (and he's had Audo Qthings and Discoveries with oodles of faults). When I go to meetings in Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, Targu Mures and the other offices over there, I often get in Dacia taxis with 500k, 600k, one even had 900k on the clock. There really are underrated little machines.
The lack of modern technology is a strong point as it allows the DIY mechanic or local garage to maintain / fix it at a reasonable cost.
I am buying a new Dacia Duster ECO-G in a few days, and I am really looking forward to this car
