What makes Norman Lear, at 98, still tick?

  • In January 1971 "All in the Family" premiered on CBS. Fifty years later, the co-creator of that classic situation comedy, Norman Lear, explains the importance of laughter in keeping him going strong at the age of 98. CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook (Lear's son-in-law) recently spent time with Lear, making a home movie like no other, in which the legendary producer reveals what makes him tick.

      Has he shared how he ripped off works from other writers and made money off their works… then blackballed them when they called him or sued him for it? I think not! He’s no hero nor is he a genius but some poor sap that wrote those scripts and shows are the real geniuses!

    I was a kid when “ All in the Family” was on tv. Back then, we could laugh at each other’s foibles and disagree without the level of hatred present today. Extremes, Archie on one side of the political spectrum and Mike on the other gave us perspective and allowed Americans to examine diversity of opinion not stoke the flames.

    • @Cathy-xi8cb
      @Cathy-xi8cb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe that Norman was using Archie to show that he was a full-figured bigot, with a heart, fears, and weaknesses. But he certainly did want to make his racist and anti-feminist opinions look foolish. Hence the jokes. He brought up things we simply didn't speak of back then; rape, dating outside your race, etc. But I remember my father's hatred, and HE wasn't joking one bit. There was a lot of intolerance and a considerable amount of violence back then. Absolutely not the good old days.

    • @joniheisenberg6691
      @joniheisenberg6691 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Cathy-xi8cb I didn’t claim they were “the good old days.” There was however a capacity for respectful dialogue. That doesn’t mean that people didn’t believe they were “right” in their opinions. There did however exist a capacity to understand and accept, that there were people more knowledgeable and a respect level that does not exist today. Now, many believe they are the experts.

    I just saw this on television this morning.
    Norman Lear was in the same squadron and bombardment group as my father.
    Both were in the 15th Air Force 463rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) 772nd Bombardment Squadron in the United States Army Air Force on B-17 Flying Fortess bombers.
    My father was 1st Lt James L Jarmon Pilot/Aircraft Commander and my dad had 50 combat missions/35 sorties in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in the year 1944.
    Dad passed away in 2004 and my mother who was an actual Rosie the Riveter on the dorsal fins of B-17's and B-29's passed away in 2018
    We both watched the television show All in the Family and it was very popular with my father and I enjoyed it as well.
    It makes my day to know that he is still with us and he has a great family.
