      +Hana I felt the same way. It's surprising how honest the interviewed were! I have a feeling if someone in my european country was asked if my country was sexist they would flat out deny it and say nothing's wrong even though it's not true. Ofcourse from my point of view Japan is way more sexist, no offense. Hearing the guys openly saying it like this is very refreshing.
      Nice video!

      +veryangrypigeon yeah I agree,maybe in Japan they're more open to admit their faults so they can fix them better...Maybe in some European countries there is this idea that "our country is super good" so people believe in it...

    I have a sneaking suspicion that the Japanese are not only fully aware of the stereotypes assigned to them by Americans but are actually amused or unfazed by the strange ideas westerners have about them.

    • @1983Corolla
      @1983Corolla 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +N Wolf Everyone's pretty aware of stereotypes in general. I live in American and oh man do I realize what people think of us, obese, hamburger eating, mcdonalds loving racists. The racist part is pretty true but im not the rest of those things so I think it's funny. I think everyone is pretty aware, ya know. Japan though even more so because there often labeled even more harshly than other countries because of the "odd" things that come out of the country.

      Filip Molin That's true, the South is a big area too so its not a small minority within the US so its pretty big. When people picture Americans they defiantly get the impression were all exactly like the South.

    Regarding weird things:
    In my country, the words "now now" can mean anything from a couple of seconds, to months.
    We have three capital cities.
    There are 11 official languages.
    Sometimes, if a deceased person's family wants the body to be returned to their home province, they'll have it transported in taxis without refrigeration or anything. (Can confirm seeing this in Graaff-Reinet. The taxi was en route to the Eastern Cape).
    You can fit twice the legally permitted number of passengers into a South African taxi, at the very least.
    A taxi is a minibus, not a sedan style vehicle.
    When workers are angry, they protest through dance.
    We call traffic lights "robots".
    We eat ostrich meat.
    People say "ag shame" as a term of endearment or adoration towards cute things, such as babies.
    Chicken beaks and feet are a staple food among many people here.
    We drink sour milk. (amasi)
    We have a chutney brand with the name "Mrs Balls"
    We have "car guards" that you basically pay tips to stand around and do nothing. (Watch your car. Won't really try to stop anything happening to it, though.)
    There's a chain of Christian bookstores named Christelike Uitgewersmaatskappy, CUM for short. I think you can understand where the humour comes in for English speakers.
    One of our president's favourite songs is about bringing him a machine gun.
    People get angry at you if you adhere to the speed limit.
    When driving in rural areas, be sure to be on the lookout so that you might not hit a stray cow from some subsistence farmer.
    People often ride in the back of trucks and pickup trucks (bakkies) in the open-topped beds.
    If you live close to a mountainous area, your house might be broken into by chacma baboons.
    There is a superstition that if you don't sleep with your bed on bricks, a pint sized being called a tokoloshe will come to abduct you.
    We have a sauce called monkey gland sauce. Goes great with steak.

    What I find really interesting is that they care too much about companies and work.

    • @joemuis23
      @joemuis23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has to do with the confucianist mindset. Companies take care of their workers and workers are expected to work there there whole lives. interesting documentary about how capitalism and old tradition is combined: th-cam.com/video/uwwmKcFVji8/w-d-xo.html

    • @Stackrates
      @Stackrates 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could also look at is they are extremely committed to their responsibilities in their company and affected a lot when they fail them. So they overwork to ensure that they don't screw up. It's with tradition as well I suppose, they aren't confrontational and generally try not to hinder other peoples lives whenever they screw up.

      @sofiaguerrero0969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah here in America, it’s encouraged by even bosses to have a work and life balance. Companies will say they have good paid time off, good vacation days, decent work hours etc to try to get employees to work for them because that’s the culture here. Work hard play hard. In Japan, they’re a lot more solely focused on work and that sound very miserable and depressing to me.

    Thanks for the great video! The guy in the blue jacket was very smart and honest. What I did find weird though was that no one talked about the sexism towards men in the Japan. Sexism doesn't only happen to women, it happens to men to. That they must always take the lead, must work 18hrs without complaint, that they must prove their "masculinity" every second of their lives. In some ways sexism towards men is worse than sexism towards women. Also sexism includes prejudice towards the LGBT. That is sexist too. Would like to hear more about what the Japanese think about that. :) You ask many people of my generation these questions. If you asked older Japanese people, they would probably be more prejudiced. Would be a nice experiment, no? The difference between older Japanese versus younger Japanese on a set of topics. From what I can see, Japanese people of my generation are much more open, honest, less bigoted. I am happy to see that. :D

    Something to note though, that just because a certain field is dominated by males, doesn't necessarily mean it's a result of sexism.
    It's only sexist when women literally just aren't allowed to do a job because of their gender. Physical labor jobs for example are mostly full of men, but that's because men are usually able to carry heavier objects quite a bit easier.

    • @GRIIMMJAQUES
      @GRIIMMJAQUES 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Today you see people pretty much say "This`s mostly male dominated so it`s sexism" all the time. It`s a pretty dumb way to look at things. Just because there`s more men than women in a field, doesn't mean that they`re somehow keeping the women out.

    • @Akriema
      @Akriema 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Ausar0 I love you. Was waiting for that comment. The focus on the differences nowadays seems way more important than the quality/ability of the individual, meaning people try to make everything "equal" by pushing numbers>50% Men 50% Women, regardless of the outcome (same applies to race, nationality whatever).
      Kind of dissapointed that this thinking is also present in the east.

      Thank you! I constantely see people talking about it! It's sexist. By that logic nurses and kindergarden teachers are sexist field aswell. You see these people called feminist pushing for more women in science, technology, enginering and mathematics (STEM) but not for miners and garabagemen which almost consist of 100% men.
      You see, the more developed a society become the less they want to work in STEM fields. There are more women working in STEM in Bangladesh than Norway.
      Apparently I have to start fighting against social justice warriors in Japan aswell.

      im a woman i agree, in my country women generally prefer not to work after marriage for example, even though theyre allowed and its normal to think of working mothers. but they just dont want to, so we have a gap in that area. and then people complain its sexism. but its not lol...

      Michaela Lindgren That relaxed attitude to nudity is actually not weird at all. That helps growing men to realize faster, that women are no sex objects, just human beings with a different body and that´s all. I wished it could be everywhere as relaxed at it is in Sweden (or even as it was in the 70.,80.s). :)

    these videos are super interesting! I've always been drawn to the Japanese culture but a lot of what i know comes from anime which i'm sure is often either completely wrong or at least blown out of proportion in areas. the rest of what i hear comes from family or the news so seeing regular people on the streets the same way a local news station would do an interview kind of brings Japan down to a more relateable level for me personally. I've always wanted to go to japan but until watching these videos i had no idea what city life was like there. i was half worried that it would be completely different from life here in the states. especially when you look at all those Japanese game show/commercial compilations XD. but that's just me being an ignorant american. you sir have made me more informed and for that, i think you and the work you've done here. :D

      Japan seems just as bad as China in the everyday living. Packed trains, massively crowded, sadistic education system, horrible work/life ratio even compared to England. If someone was a writer or a musician or worked from home and lived in a more rural area then I'd imagine it would be quite nice.

      Yeah. They focus a lot on sexism at work (I feel like sexism simply only relates to work for them, perhaps?) but their comments are very sexist I feel? Different gender expectations that might negatively affect people of the respective gender. I am absolutely pro-herbivore men because the phenomenom disrupts 'traditional' gender roles ;)

So many people would BS on camera, particularly in US/UK and other western places, and maybe even be defensive with some of the questions about stereotypes. I do however, think all of these things exist in most countries, when it comes to sexism and the like.

    Could you maybe also do something with cultural appropriating and japanese culture? What do Japanese people think about western people obsessing about Japan? What do they actually feel about "weeabos"? Or western people wearing kimono/yukata or dressing up as a geisha for Halloween? This is a quite common topic I have noticed, where western people get offended for Japanese people and say it's cultural appropriation, but does Japanese people really care?

      It's a term used to describe guys in Japan, soushokukei (herbivore)=quiet, shy, quite gentle passive guys. Whilst nikushokukei (carnivore) would be what you'd imagine to be a guy who is fairly macho, outspoken etc., basically the opposite :)

    I think the U.S. needs to take pointers from Japan; maybe if we had our teens and young adults keep themselves busy with more productive things in our society, we would probably have a lot less unwanted pregnancies.
    Of course, the cons with that is we might have to deal with a little more stress and a lot less personal time, but it still wouldn't be as much stress and drama as a mother would have from raising a 12 year old with an unwanted child.

    Interesting thoughts! I think there's a connection that they were saying but didn't quite put together about the sexless/sexist thing! Like women have to try harder to find jobs and keep those jobs as companies are hesitant to hire women. Japanese companies prefer workers to work for life, so women who may have maternity leave are lower on the food chain! Thus, less motivation for sex & babies or even relationships because everyone's so focused on working... 難しいですね!

Some time in March or April, I plan on staying a while in Tokyo, Chiba, and/or Yokosuka. I don't really have a question (your videos and my friend have already answered most of my questions), but I am curious about how a foreigner can adapt to the Japanese lifestyle, and what might help facilitate a comfortable life. I really like this channel, because it presents a fair picture of Japan that is not biased or stereotypical. I feel that Western people either tend to idealize Japan as some sort of a paradise (otaku types do that) , or demean it and call it sexist, racist, etc. I think these videos clear up stuff, and portray Japan for what it is, a country that has issues (like every other country), but has a lot positive aspects to it, as well, and ultimately, the Japanese, like every other nationality are not all the same, they have difficult opinions and viewpoints.

    Weird things we have in Canada: Milk in Bags! We can buy bagged milk. We also sometimes have weird flavoured snacks like ketchup chips and poutine-flavoured chips.
    Poutine is pretty weird, it is french fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. We like our fries here and sometimes have strange things to go along with them like vinegar or sri-racha mixed with mayonnaise. Although I'm not really that into it.
    Salmon pie is another weird food we have here. The salmon filling is mushy like a crab cake, and mustard can be added. But I personally detest salmon pie. It's a variant of Tourtière, a French-Canadian dish that my mom makes every Christmas, and Tourtière I love because it reminds me of hamburgers. It is a meat pie and consists mostly of beef but may have wild game added to enhance the flavour. My mom likes to add venison.
