Sadly, some Japanese people see people just based on appearance, I think.
I know that sounds crazy, but as a Japanse, I also have the tendency honestly..
I don't think that's just Japan, I guess it happens everywhere. I also kind of judge people from their apearances. There's one difference though, I don't look at people with the question, is he handsome? I just look to see if the personality would fit with mine. You can actually read someone's personality from their face most of the time. But I might just be weird. A friend once told me that I'm weird for not finding certain guys handsome. But isn't character way more important than your looks anyway?
People naturally looks on appearance first cuz its the most obvious thing to do. I honestly think its human nature, people assess their environment and other people to make sure they are not in any harm. So most people are at ease with anything 'acceptable' in 'society's standard'. Being beautiful/successful/intelligent etc. are some traits w/c society puts high regard on so its natural people are easily at ease with it.

+simbbam I learned from my developmentpsychology course that the way you're attatched to your mom actually influences your preferences when searching for a partner. E.g. If your mom was really cuddly with you when you were young you'll tend to search for a similar relationship. If your mom was really distant, you'll tend to look for a partner who is a bit distant as well.

Men in the west have mistaken egotistical for shows of confidence when when in reality some of the quietest and most reserved men have the most real life confidence.

Watching this I can't help but think that if they were speaking English, they wouldn't seem nearly as cute to many of the viewers. I'm reminded of something my dad said happened to him in the army. A superior officer chatted with him about foreign women in a bathroom while shaving and asked "do you speak any other languages?" my father replied "yes several" the officer quickly cut him off "don't, it's easier that way". Though it can be frustrating in practice, not speaking the same language instantly builds a mystery for something even if you do understand the person (I.E. subtitles)
+Soran Marlovic When you start learning a language, everybody who speaks that language seems very interesting and everything they say sounds poetic. Then we you actually become better at the language, you realise that they are mostly just talking crap :D

Just jumped into this video 2 years later, and I literally did just confess to a japanese guy, he picked up the signs as well, and returned the feeling, but he said its too late- since he’s still with this girl who confessed to him first and he cannot reject her effort since I never made the first move. They appreciate it if girls come forward or made the first move. So yeah japanese guys are way too kind like that- goes so far as sacrificing his feelings for me for the girl who got him first. Not The slightest relevant whatsoever to the vid, just thought I could share with what I came across with japanese men in my experience.

Great video! I am married and my husband and I would love to take a trip to Japan one day. It seemed that some of the guys in this video said that just looking at them and smiling at them or saying friendly things to them would be considered flirting. I naturally do those sorts of things (smiling and saying "hello" to people walking by me, etc.) in the States just to be friendly, not to flirt. If I was also friendly like this in Japan, would people mistake it for flirting? I would rather not flirt accidentally with someone since I am married! haha. Thanks again for your videos! Mariano J "Smelt" is the past tense of smell, in British English. Same as "smelled" in American English. They often do that with verbs... smelt, learnt, etc...

I want to thank you for this video. I've always wanted to date a Japanese man...and of course go to Japan. It's been a dream. I do have plans in the near future to live there. I just have to finish my degree and get a job. Being that there is a big cultural difference between here (Texas) and Japan, this helps.

I'm positively surprised by their answers, they were pretty open to what they liked and straightforward, also they seemed eager to see females being the active part, or sharing domestic fantasies. I thought they would be a lot more reticent due to japan being pretty repressed on certain aspects.
