P.O.D. (Payable on Death) achieved remarkable success, defying expectations as a Christian rock band during the nu-metal era. Emerging from San Diego in 1992, the multiracial group faced both success and challenges. Sonny Sandoval, the vocalist, joined the band after his mother's conversion to Christianity, finding solace in her faith during her battle with leukemia. Wuv's father, who formed Rescue Records, became their manager, reflecting the band's close ties to Christianity.
In their early days, P.O.D. faced skepticism from Christians and skinhead audiences due to their overtly religious lyrics. The band, however, evolved, garnering attention and opening for Cypress Hill, Green Day, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones in San Diego. Their lineup changed in 1994, and they independently released "Snuff the Punk" and "Brown," gaining popularity.
The turning point came when Atlantic Records signed them, leading to their major-label debut, "The Fundamental Elements of Southtown," in 1999. The album, produced by Howard Benson, featured hits like "Southtown" and "Rock the Party," blending rock, hip-hop, and spiritual elements. P.O.D. successfully crossed into mainstream music, touring with Korn, Primus, and headlining their own shows.
In 2001, P.O.D. released "Satellite," coinciding with the 9/11 attacks. The song "Alive" became a symbol of hope, resonating with listeners. "Youth of a Nation" addressed the tragedy of school shootings. Despite mainstream success, P.O.D. resisted the Christian label, emphasizing their music's positive message.
The self-titled album in 2003 marked a change, featuring guitarist Jason Truby. The album's cover sparked controversy, but P.O.D. advocated boycotting stores refusing to carry it. The band faced label issues amid Atlantic's shakeup, impacting their negotiations despite prior success.
In 2006, P.O.D. collaborated with producer Glen Ballard and featured Katy Perry on "Goodbye for Now." The album "Testify" went gold, but tensions with Atlantic led to the band's departure. P.O.D. released "When Angels and Serpents Dance" in 2008, marking the return of original guitarist Marcos Curiel.
Throughout the 2010s, P.O.D. continued releasing albums, including "Murdered Love" in 2012, which sparked controversy over explicit language. They explored diverse sounds in "Circles" (2018), collaborating with Heavy. The band's commitment to positive messaging and connection with fans remained consistent, reflecting in their charitable endeavors and outreach.
As P.O.D. approaches their new album, "Veritas," set to release this year, they continue evolving while staying true to their roots. The band's resilience, diverse influences, and dedication to delivering a positive message have solidified their enduring impact on the music scene. - เพลง

I worked as an independent promoter in the 90s. I had the opportunity to bring P.O.D. to Houston for the first time in 1999. It was between the release of The Warriors EP and The Fundamental Elements of Southtown. It was called "The Warriors Tour", and included two other bands, Project 86 and Blindside. The show was the highlight of my time as a promoter. P.O.D. were great guys. They stayed and spoke to every fan that wanted to talk to them. Sonny and I were the last to leave the room that night. These guys are the real deal, and 25 years later, I would walk barefoot across burning glass if they needed anything from me.
I attended that show downtown. Every one was so down to earth and good live. Best show I've ever attended.
Silence by Blindside is one of my all time favorite albums. Thanks for helping them out early on!
I saw this same tour at a TINY pizzeria in Little Rock, AR. They crammed so many kids in that place. The show was amazing and POD were definitely the highlight.

I met Sonny at St.Pete skatepark a few years ago. Super cool guy. My mom was in the hospital with brain cancer and I knew I wouldn’t see her again. He talked for an hour and he prayed with me for her. He was there with the group The Whosoevers just praying with kids at the park.
Sonny has responded to me twice on social media. These guys love the Lord and the know their fans have given them all they have. Their new stuff sounds pretty amazing also. Love these guys!

I remember watching Sonny Sandoval in an episode of MTV Cribs, that show were artists showed their houses or properties. While the vast mayority of celebrities showed off their big houses, mansions, cars and their expensive luxuries, Sonny's home was a simple wooden two-floor house in a humble suburban area where he lived with his family and even some relatives. No pools, no expensive cars, and no big TV systems... just a house with a yard where he likes to makes BBQs.
I saw a 2006 Cribs showing Vince Neil's house in Las Vegas...It was a nice house but it was no mansion...
Many of those shows were fake anyway with borrowed or rentals to show off.
I helped book POD at my church twice when I was a teenager. Both amazing shows, the second one there were so many people going nuts the floor broke (no one hurt). The first time they came through they were in a conversion van, the second time they rolled in on a new tour bus. Instead of bailing on the broken floor show, they stayed after for hours just chilling with all the kids that showed up. Seriously some of the most down to earth , nicest band dudes Ive ever been around.

Songs like “Youth of a Nation” are those timeless songs like “Another Brick on the Wall” listening to them will still hit these young kids today and 20 years from now and 100 years from now.. being a teenager is a stressful situation and knowing you aren’t alone makes you feel so much better when you feel like you hit rock bottom.. even if you’re not you know a “Little Susie” or a “Johnny Boy” in your school and can relate to the song.. awareness is a powerful thing ❤

I saw P.O.D. live three times, once with Linkin Park and it was very amazing. Their live show was very powerful.

These guys were a big influence on me as a teen. One of my first shows was P.O.D. Hēd P.E. and Project 86…. Like 22 years ago.

Dude no way. That was my very first concert I attended. Linkin Park was the headliner, but it was those 3 that were part of the tour. I saw them at Cleveland Agora. I remember when they left the stage and then came back to sing a few "encores" and then ended up singing like an hour to an hour and a half longer. Such an iconic show. I will never forget it

An underrated song “Will You” got me through my parents divorcing when I was kid. Now that I think about it: I had to get through something some other people started . 😢
I grew up in Santee and was living a 5-minute walk from Santana in 2001, and would graduate from there in 2009. It feels so surreal to hear a hometown band and my hometown talked about on this channel. "Youth of The Nation" holds a special place reverence for me, and captures the essence of Santee, which is a very haunted town plagued with bigotry, addiction, and holds a massive women's prison in its center. Thank you for making this video!!

Bigotry is a made up liberal word. It's an Oxymoron. It restricts people's rights to believe whatever they want to believe. It forces you to like everything and everyone or else you are a bigot. It's an illogical concept. You cannot force everyone to like everyone and everything, its impossible, and if they don't they are labeled a bigot. It's irrational, doesn't make any logical sense, hence why a liberal came up with it.

I’ve loved this band for 25 years.
They have never let up and have always stayed true to themselves and to Christ. Sonny is the real deal and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
Been a fan of POD since nearly the beginning, and I've had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times: once in '97 at a festival, shortly before they released Southtown and right before that blew up, and then again on the Circles tour in 2018.
I’ve seen them twice. First time was in Plano Texas with Flyleaf & Staind. The second was in Belton Texas with Three Days Grace & Shinedown.

Met POD at American Village Starbucks in Chatan, Okinawa Japan in 2014. They had come to Okinawa to play a show on Marine Corps Base Camp Hansen.
They were really nice guys, and very approachable. I had recently broken my leg in a motorcycle crash, and they offered to pray for my continued healing, over my new motorcycle (a 2004 GSXR 1000) which I had sitting right outside the Starbucks door.

@rnrtruestories Loved it, brother. Spent 4 years there and would move back in a heartbeat if I could. Best motorcycle riding I've ever done was there and the people/culture there are awesome.
On a musical note I also saw Eve 6 there, on Camp Schwab in 2014.
I'll never forget this. While I would get ready for work, I would turn on MTV. That morning, I was watching the video Alive and then an emergency interruption glared across the screen. At that moment, I changed the channel to the news and there it was, unfolding right on my screen. I always attributed my memory of watching that video, in the morning, right as I saw the news. And every time I hear Alive, it takes me right back to that moment in my lving room.

At a Christian music festival in the late 90s in Colorado I first heard them play and Sonny gave his testimony and I was moved and related to him the following day I ran into him on the grounds and I talked with him about how I had also recently lost my mother from cancer, he was so sweet and gave me encouraging scripture of comfort. I’ll always have a heart for him as he was so sincere and authentic
Fundamental elements of southtown was one of the best albums of the 90's. I still listen to it today.

Sonny is a great god fearing man. He sat with me and couple friends at a picnic table outside of there tour bus. He truly wanted to know our testimony. The whole band was awesome. Seen them multiple times in different states. Always wanted to know how I was doing every time I seen him. Love all these band members.

When it comes to Christian Nu-Metal, they were huge and probably the only act I knew of that fit that loose definition... not only did they get huge because of "Alive" and other songs from their album Satellite... but they were on the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack "Sleeping Awake"... the song randomly pops in my head from time to time

Love the walk down memory lane man, excellent recap! I'm a lifelong POD fan, they're my all time #1 band. Love these guys and have seen them live close to 20 times. Their live shows are 2nd to none whether there's 10 people in the crowd or 10K! So thankful they've stayed true to themselves while expanding their music library & sound. Sonny is a stellar dude! I worked for Hard Rock Cafe in Gatlinburg. They came in and the whole staff was excited. We treated them well. They expected everything for free and didn’t tip. Of all the rockers we served, I will forever remember them for this. Thinking they were too big too tip or pay…
Have not seen it mentioned as well, so I will throw this out there. They made song the Theme Song for Rey Mysterio in the WWE. He is also from San Diego and they got to play it live at Wrestlemania!
One of the best rock live shows I’ve ever seen. Sonny is one of the best front men in the game, so much passion and energy on stage. Seen them 3 times around San Diego and can’t wait to see them again.

I was an old school metal head, growing up..listening too groups Metallica, Judas Priest, Kiss, Scorpion’s, old Def Leopard, Ted Nugent, ect. I literally put my mom through hell.
My first concert was Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osborne when I was 13..in 1980. Starting my use of alcohol and drugs.
Musically I moved on too the grunge scene and the Nu Metal in the 90’s… POD, Nirvana, Korn, Nine Inch Nails, Alice In Chains….
I remember when Brian Head Welch left Korn and formed the band Love and Death, a Christian Metal Band that was pretty decent. I saw a documentary about the Korn reunion, BHW and Fieldy did the same thing, (after they reunited with KORN), that POD did, talking to their fans about their relationship with God, personally sharing their walk with God, also being recovering addicts themselves and praying with them.
I think as we all have aged, and we reflect, God SAVED a lot of us from the STUPID and RECKLESS stuff some of us did. I know I should’ve been dead!

1) I’ve always been really tapped into my spiritual self; and Youth of A Nation, and Alive, were really pivotal in my journey as a professional musician/artist, and my mental health journey. It wasn’t until many years after I first heard P.O.D. did i realize (or I found out somehow) they there Christian. I’m of the “if it’s good, it’s good” class, so all good, since they were speaking positivity into me.
2) You mentioned Hoobastank, and it made me remember that I once was background in one of their videos. I had to go figure out which one; and fittingly, it’s Remember Me. I just watched that video for the first time since we filmed it and I commented on Hoobastank’s video. They were incredibly nice to us as we filmed on a field as it got pretty cold at night. I still have the T-shirt they were kind enough to sign for me, as well. I’m 40 now and that must have been at least 15-20 years ago. Thanks for sparking a positive memory.
3) I enjoy your content. Can’t watch all the time because I have a full schedule as a professional DJ and mom of an elementary school kid (and I’m on the volunteer Parent executive team lol)… but, Everytime I watch, I am more of a fan. Peace to you!

I went to Santana when those shootings happened. Lived in Santee, El cajon, La Mesa growing up and loved this band. Still playing it often. Reminds me of old times growing up.

I remember being at that show in Walled Lake where I’m from. I also ran into them at that Denny’s after and they signed my shirt that I had on that I still have. They are an awesome group of guys and I loved seeing their success after. I’ve been fortunate to see other groups rise from the bottom in and out of the Christian music world. Michigan has always been a popular stop for smaller bands.

The Southtown record was the first rock album I ever got into as a kid. It was life-altering . It opened the door for me to get into all kinds of rock and heavy music.

I was a senior in high school when Alive and Youth of the nation released. It was a weird time for us being so close to graduation and it feeling bittersweet post 9/11 and to top it off one of my classmates died a week prior to our ceremony on a motorcycle crash. Her mother gave an unforgettable emotional speech. Not a dry eye in the crowd. They saved her seat among all her classmates and in her seat was a bouquet of flowers. P.O.D's music was a big influence on many people around my age and I get to see them tomorrow at Rockville. Thanks for giving me some insight into their history.
I saw them play direct support for Jinjer when they were on tour, and to be honest, I didnt expect much from them when i first saw the bill. However, they came out and absolutely killed it, and put on what myself, and my close friend felt to be the best performance of the night. They are super nice guys, and really put on a good show.

I’ve seen them live in a small Bar in Los Angeles a few years back and it was an amazing show .. you know when you see someone doing something they were put in this world to do.. such a great talented band.. easily in my top 3 maybe tied for best show I’ve ever seen wit Iron Maiden.. I’m not saying their music is at the same level but their raw intensity live is fucken crazy❤

Saw POD live at the "Jager Stage" while at Rock On The Range in Columbus OH in 2010. They were so good! It made me sad they didnt get booked on a bigger stage at that festival. I still rock "Alive" and "Boom" during workouts! Just listened to them the other day while lifting weights. Highly recommended during exercising. BOOM!
One of the most important bands to me, and as a drummer, no one has influenced me more than Wuv did back in the early 2000's when i was really get into drumming in bands.

Sonny is an amazing human being. His interview with Finn Mckenty is the best podcast interview with a musician that I’ve ever heard. Honesty, and full of integrity. I have so much respect for that guy.
I've always liked their music. I didn't like Sonny for a long time because the way he interracted with fans sometimes but this was nearly 15 years ago. I get he and the band as a whole were constantly being judged because they didnt' fit whatever mold "Christianity" was supposed to be according to people. I think back then, he had a chip on his shoulder after a while and actually, i didn't realize to what extent they were being targeted. After seeing this video, it makes more sense. When he decided to take a break was about that time that I'm referring to. I was in my mid 20's and I'm in my mid 40's now. I like their music and I probably always will. :)
Seeing P.O.D. at the Machine Shop is one of my all-time favorite shows. Sonny hanging from the rafters while singing, the energy of the crowd, hearing hit song after hit song, just incredible.
At least POD made one of the best wrestling themes of all-time.

Oh BOOM (The Crystal Method Remix) on Amplitude is in the intro and a blast to play! I remember hearing Alive on the radio and it strongly resonating with me at the time when I was 13 before ever I played Amplitude. I love their recent albums and am loving what they released for the new album. P.O.D. has to be one of my top 10 bands from that time. I didn't know all this and really enjoyed learning about the bands strange history that I'm not so sure if it can be said from other bands of their era.
This was great, good work. I have been listening to and going to P.O.D. shows since 1994 and was really worried that this wouldn't be on point but it is. Can confirm that they are all legit dudes as my band back in the early '00 opened for them a few time.

As a late 80's early 90's kid that grew up in the evangelical church. POD was my gateway and entry into heavy music. I loved this band so much growing up. I get chills every time I listen to fundamental elements of Southtown. I don't attain to or claim the faith I grew up in, , but I will always love this band!

When 8th grade me saw the music video for Southtown back in 1999, I was blown away. I was just getting into No Innocent Victim, Zao, Blindside and Project 86, so when I saw the video with the members and the crowd wearing the shirts of those bands, it was so relatable. Love these dudes. I wish them continued success.
Wife and I saw POD in Denver in '01 or '02. A Great show! one of our favorites. Our 4 and 6 yr old kids listened to a lot f P.O.D. back then too ;)
I saw them live before I had just heard their name a few weeks earlier . They played with Chimera , Vision of Disorder (whom I came to see the most) and headliners Machine Head . All the bands played a tight set . If I remember correct it was at Bogarts in Cinci .
But for my first experience to P.O.D. being live , and opening the show (I think?) not knowing any of their music , I remember digging ,having a good time and paying attention instead of just drinking or standing with my arms folded staring at them . Most of the crowd were into everything that night . So yeah , it was fun and they put on a good show .
Just saw P.O.D. last Thursday out here in Vegas. They were awesome. Got to hear a bunch of the new songs too.

Crazy how P.O.D helped me through so much chaos and every time a song was released they'd help me out of the hole I hope they tour soon and come to to east Coast if love to see them live
Grew up listening to them in the late 90s when I was a teenager. Saw them live quite a bit between 96-98. A couple times when they were with Living Sacrifice.
I remember Tuesday September 11, 2001. Marked the day on my calendar in anticipation of the Satellite album release. The attacks happed that morning. I was on the west coast. I went to work but got the CD that morning. That would for ever be my soundtrack for 9/11. When remembering the events of that day I always somehow add that I was waiting to get That album on that morning. Great album and a lot of the songs expressed all the feelings I couldn’t find the words for. I wish I could thank the guys from the band for saying what I couldn’t.
"Boom" was banned from the radio because of the name of the song after 9/11. Wild times!

When I first heard P.O.D., I never knew they were a "Christian" band. When I did find out, it didn't change my view on them since I consider myself a Christian (though I'm not generally a fan of Christian media).
P.O.D. is very underappreciated. I consider Snuff The Punk to be the first nu metal album, considering it pre-dated Korn's debut by a few months. Their interaction with fans are GOATed. Right here on TH-cam, if you go to a fan upload of their song "Alive", P.O.D. commented under the video. Most other artists would be quick to copyright strike these kinds uploads, so that's really cool what they did.
I remember when their song came out after September 11th happened. That was the first time I heard them. It was kind of chilling. I love that song.

POD have always rocked my mind and I'm agnostic. They have class. And depth.
Love POD since the mid 2000s. One of and still the best Christian group. Their greatest hits was my first intro to them. I need to listen to their songs a lot more again now that their new album is around the corner.
I went to a private Lutheran school for most of my elementary school days, so POD was really big with the kids who's parents wouldn't let them listen to our normal devil music rock bands. This was back in the Southtown days, but I remember the principals kid said POD was his favorite band back then, lol
I will never forget being 10 or 11 years old and showing my great-aunt these guys. She was a super sweet lady and as religious as they come, not the type to ever crack a joke. The closest I ever heard her come to swearing was saying the word "hell" in a hushed tone. She knew that I liked rock music and would always give me Christian rock CDs from her church that I would listen to once and then probably never again. One day I was all excited to show her a band that I actually did like, and guess what, they are Christians! I turned them on and we listened all the way through one song. She waited patiently the whole time, not saying a word. Then she asked, "what did you say these guys were called again?" "P.O.D." I said. And without skipping a beat, with the most innocent, sweet, old-lady face she looks at me and she says, "that must stand for punks on drugs." I died.

Pretty cool and very accurate. I'm from San Diego, and my youth pastor was tight with Noah Sr. I saw these guys dozens of times between 94 and 99.
Was a big POD fan back in the day. Saw them in Portland and they were incredible. Such a good band
