    I love how in Sm4sh, Viridi roasts Chrom and tells him to his face that he didn't get in because he would be an Ike clone with no Aether. Then he gets in in Ultimate, and he somehow ends up being a Roy clone with Ike's Aether. Like, what?

      Really the Palutena guidances were all kind of hit or miss regarding since they attempted to be so much in touch with fans but...
      Man the Chrom quote for Robin's guidance was just so misinformed lol, I wonder what did the script writer see there to write that
      (Chrom actually gets Aether in Awakening, I have no idea how that line slipped through)

    Here’s a fun fact:
    TCRF claims that the Galaxian sound is unused in Pac-Man's victory animations, but it’s actually used when Pac-Man falls next to the 7650 sign.
    Also, you can attack the trampoline in ultimate, but it doesn’t turn green.

      @@SoshiTheYoshi In addition, the 765 is a sort of Japanese wordplay called "goroawase", since 765 can be pronounced as "na-mu-ko", or Namco.

    (2:10) Note that, just because the background is the same as the Dreamland stage has now, doesn't mean that was the background used during testing. It can mean the testing stage is simply reading the same file as the Dreamland stage for the background, and the background can have been replaced after completing the final Dreamland stage, which would also change the background for all testing stages that is using the same file.

    A bit of a correction:
    "Dragon King" is meant to be "Ryuo," as it's named after an actual place in Japan.

      It's Ryūō or Ryuuou/Ryuuoh ( 龍王, 竜王). It's also the name of a shogi tournament and does in fact translate to "dragon king" so this isn't even a correction.

      @@Liggliluff Considering it's a US city, I could only imagine the British, one of their other former colonies or current territories (that used to be _called_ colonies but rebranded even though they're basically the same thing) calling it The Angels and even then LA is _probably_ well enough known around the world that no one would translate it to "The Angels" or any other language really.
      Maybe a more obscure city like [San Buena]Ventura (which is actually named after Saint Bonaventure, an Italian name that means good life, good fortune, Ventura itself translating to "fortune" but considering what Bonaventure was patron saint of, I'd say ironically, he's not that lucky at all...).
      There's also a city near LA generically named El Segundo (The Second) which was named because it was the site of the second Standard Oil refinery on the west coast, that's probably a lot closer to Ryūō than LA or Ventura all things considered, albeit far more of a generic name as "ryūō" _probably_ doesn't come up as often in non-shogi-related casual conversation as "el segundo".

      Loved Yoshi's Story as a kid and recognized those immediately but was seeing if anyone else had commented it before I did. Glad to know there are others out there who still remember the game. It's an old fave that I feel like rarely gets mentioned

    I do think that if Plusle and Minun were planned that they weren't gonna be 2 separate fighters like the Ice Climbers, but that they'd act like one Fighter at all times, hence why they'd only share only 1 filename

Personally, I'm assuming it would have been either: 1) the same moveset on one individual character with various costumes (for plusle, minun, and recolors of them), or 2) it would be more like an aegis situation, where you switch between them somehow

      @@quarepercutisproximum9582 I think they mean (and I think as well) that they function as one character but aesthetically look like two. They’d be walking together, they’d swing each around for attacks, they’d jump together, they’d get launched together, they’d share hitboxes and hurtboxes and can’t be separated, etc. They’d be one character from a gameplay perspective but two characters from a fun perspective. Think like what Banjo & Kazooie or Duck Hunt does except the characters are next to each other at all times rather than on top of each other. Then again, perhaps they’d be on top of each other so their shared hitbox wouldn’t be too wide.

    You know what's a really obvious theory that people don't talk about with Pra_Mai?
    It WAS Plusle and Minun but they WEREN'T a Duo
    They were a *_pair_* like Duck Hunt, two characters but one fighter

    The reason why Piranha Plant has the internal filename "Packun" is because his Japanese name is literally "Packun Flower".

    I learned quite a lot about Smash. Stuff I never knew prior. This was a very interesting series. I never knew about any of the scrapped or unused content.

    So many characters were scrapped in Melee for being Japan exclusive but……Marth was Japan exclusive, and Roy technically still is Japan exclusive?

      Well the original plan was to make them exclusive to the Japanese version of the game, but since Roy's game was going to be released shortly after, the plan was to use Melee to advertise the series, as they had planned to make Binding Blade the first Fire Emblem game of the series. Ultimately, Roy's game never made it out of Japan, but the popularity of Marth and Roy did make them release Blazing Sword to the West as simply "Fire Emblem"

      Sakurai didn't actually want Roy in Melee, but the company president insisted on it as a way of advertising the newest Fire Emblem game.

      @@SandwitchZebra Despite playing Melee as a kid I barely remember Marth and Roy in that game mainly because I was using Kirby and Samus. I randomly picked up FE Awakening for the 3DS in 2014 just because I like the box art and was curious about the gameplay. Turns out that I am now a massive fan of the series and addicted to strategy RPGs now.

      Plus we still have characters speaking Japanese in all versions anyway (Cloud, Sephiroth, Kazuya) so it's not like it's an issue of not wanting to leave things unlocalized. They should've just kept it in for all languages.

    11:14 having played Yoshi's Story I can tell you that those things are just switches on a path. The path, the dotted line, is a path a lot of different things, but usually platforms, would fly along. And those switches would redirect said platforms. You can see the L shape on the light brown base, that's where the path would be redirected. The lever with the red ball at the end would need to be hit to rotate the light brown base.

    What helped regular Twilight Princess Shiek get in is that there was a concept for Twilight Princess Shiek's design in the first place, but I don't know if there's ever been any for a "Toon Shiek" or not. Also calling Tetra "Toon Shiek" would really only make sense if she was ever actually called Shiek in any internal files for any of the toon games.
    And about Piranha Plant's internal name, in the Mario series, the Piranha Plant species is literally called "Pakkun/Packun Flower" in the Japanese version. This is also most definitely why Bowser gives Peach a bouquet of small Piranha Plants; not just as a comedic and totally Bowser-like touch, but also because they literally are a form of flower.

      It's funny when these TH-camrs forget that Smash is a Japanese game. Just random moments they can't connect that a random spelling of a name might be because it's in Japanese.
      He's otherwise fairly got at this stuff and most of the video is great

    Referring to the smash ultimate section here:
    The image featuring the flaming smash ball with Pit, Fox, and Incineroar is used in the online menus for Nintendo’s occasional ingame tournament qualifiers. I believe the second image is also used in the online menu as well, in the space where banners are placed to notify you about online events, such as event tourneys and the like.
    Also for the sans hat, I believe the unused emission texture is “used” by the game. But since the meshes for the glowing eye were deleted it’s not easy to tell visually. Iirc parameters for the emission texture are still present in the model.numatb file for the Mii hat, which makes them give or take half unused.

    42:45 this one hurt me the most because we are so close at getting a fully evolved grass type starter Pokémon in smash bros for once. Now i praying and hope that springatito from pokemon scarlet and violet humanoid final evoultion or the fully evolved grass type starter from gen 10 will join smash bros 7. By the time smash 7 gets released gen 9 and 10 will be the two current generation for the Pokémon franchise.

      I mean, when you think about it, Incineroar is easier to make a completely unique moveset for, it's literally a pro wrestling heel, making it perfect for a fighting game, and Decidueye had just recently been in Pokken while Incineroar hadn't.

      @@FATE522 After how well Smash Ultimate did in sales I'm 99 percent sure there will be another Smash game regardless of if Sakuria is involved or not Nintendo is a company that wants to make money and there's no way I can see them not making another Smash game after Smash Ultimate became the best selling game in the series.
      That being said where did you hear Sakuria confirm this?

    They didn’t add Ayumi Tachibana in melee because she was japan-only but they left marth and roy, who at the time were japan-only as well. Brilliant

    I had the official Melee guide and Ditto was in it. I always wondered why I never saw it in regular gameplay. Must have been cut pretty late in development.

      It's pretty funny! Also did you know that Mach Rider is Female? I didn't think so myself, but I guess it's true. So, she predates Samus!

No source I can find states this, Nintendo has exclusively referred to the character as a man, and I'm pretty sure this would be a much bigger deal if it were true. Not to mention, he's literally based on Kamen Rider, and the arcade game Vs Mach Rider gives him a very obviously masculine figure clearly visible through his tight outfit.

      I guess from what you have said, they weren’t telling the truth. I’ve played Mach Rider(still own it),and never thought the character looked feminine. Thanks for clarifying that they are actually male and masculine! By the way, what’s VS Mach Rider like?

      @@soraandkairi1194 Vs Mach Rider was a Japan-exclusive arcade version of the game with a few differences, iirc, one being that as you progress, Mach Rider inexplicably starts looking more feminine until finally you have a skimpily dressed woman standing by his bike. But Vs isn't canon, and it was clearly one of those tricks to make hormone-driven teenage boys keep popping coins into the machine.

    When you brought up the Dr. Mario Viruses, I thought for a moment that you were going to say they were considered as a playable character. This made me realize just how neat of a character concept they could be, incorporating puzzle game mechanics into their moveset. They could fight as a single 3-part character and the color of the viruses that make them up could vary based on the moves they used, and getting all 3 of the same color together would give them a power boost...

    Note that "Dragon King" is a literal translation of the city Sakurai from. Basically imagine a game called "Los Angeles" and someone translating it to "The Angels", as if that's a relevant translation.

    Plusle and Minun could also have worked like Duck Hunt or Banjo & Kazooie, instead of like the Ice Climbers.
    And Toon-Sheik could have been made up specifically for Smash.

    Wasn't it confirmed Captain Falcon's VA, Ryō Horikawa, hasn't recorded any new dialoged since Smash 64 (aside from the Min Min trailer) and they've all been the same ones since? That "Come on, Blue Falcon!" sounds exactly the same but without the dramatic filter.

      Yeah, every time his dialogue has sounded different, it's because they were using alternate takes he'd recorded years ago. That explains why he actually forgot how to do Falcon's voice and would often substitute his Vegeta voice when asked to do Falcon lines at conventions. Another interesting fact is that Hikaru Midorikawa didn't record any new Marth dialogue until Ultimate, although he'd wanted to do rerecordings for Smash 4 because he was older now and so was Marth, and he wanted to have the dialogue and the sound of his voice better reflect Marth's character development and aging and match how he now sounded in the recent Fire Emblem games, but by the time he asked Sakurai about it, he was a bit too late.

    In Ultimate, I wish we had all the playable SSB64 stages plus Meta Crystal, Duel Zone and Final Destination 64 even if the latter two might have be redundant.
    It'd also would have been interesting if Dragon King had been the bonus character instead of Piranha Plant. He'd be polygonal as if he was pulled straight from SSB64!and dropped into Ultimate.

    Im a brawl modder and love the game to death, here's a couple things I think about.
    In the Japanese version of the game Mystery of the Emblem and Earthbound were masterpieces but taken out for the american release. (Pretty sure those were the two).
    Code for mii usage does exist within brawl, it's used for the online mode and the theory about the mii character slot does not seem as far fetched to me and couldve been possible.
    Im actually curious about the falchion cracked bit. As far as my FE knowledge goes the blade itself is unbreakable and only the handle/hilts have broken on it with the sword being reforged after. I gotta look through that again.
    The most interesting thing though, that isnt well known is the history of the Onett stage. Many textures on that stage comes from earthbound 64. Things like the weathervane, sign, etc. Are the same textures that appeared in the E3 video and promotional material for EB64. This all makes sense though. Remember it being said Lucas was supposed to be in Melee to replace Ness but Ness was added back instead? My theory is Onett is actually a repurposed Lucas EB64 stage. It makes sense as to why it looks nothing like onett and the reuse of assets. Just my hot take.

    As an additional note, the Fire Attack censoring isn't even new to Ultimate; the version of the Fire Attack game itself in Game & Watch Gallery 4 had the enemies changed to featherless bandits in the same way. This is the case in both the original GBA cartridge back in 2004 and the Wii U Virtual Console release.

    A few extra tidbits.
    1. The random image of the boxing ring stage is likely either a leftover placeholder or a test image, since the increased resolution in ultimate was likely done for the switch's display.
    2. Iirc, dataminers were able to discover that the unused sans eye texture was actually meant to be used whenever sans landed a perfect parry. I think modders were even able to reimpliment that.

    11:15 The dotted lines are almost definitely paths that the platforms moved along; Those cog things are definitely route-changers that rotate when the red levers are hit.
    The platforms would probably enter from off stage and, if you rotate that top cog 90 deg anti-clockwise, they would keep moving up and down until someone hits one of the levers. I bet that it was dropped for being unsatisfying, since the levers were probably hit too often (being on the route), but if there were lines that continue up-and-over the stage it could be very fun (or even better, a rainbow ride style map where you alter the course of the track by hitting switches!!).
    I imagine fuzzys also spawned on those tracks, and would get trapped in the same way.

    You probably got told of this already, but the bit on Rainbow Curse's early colors it's because it was modeled much closer to the very grey Rainbow Ride in Mario 64, which got fixed in Melee's final release

    The visible damage thing was certainly pretty neat in theory. Probably would have DRASTICALLY complicated the development of these games just that little bit more, but i am surprised that we haven't REALLY seen this feature come back as just sort of a visual indicator that the player has taken a serious beating or something. I wouldn't quite say the whole "If a player get's hit really hard, SOME characters will briefly show minor damage that will magically disappear moments later" thing really counts either.
    Dunno how i would feel if most characters had their weapons and equipment break as they kept going on as a way to handicap them for doing so well, but i mean, hey, would have been an interesting way of giving players that aren't doing as hot a chance to come back i guess, would have certainly been interesting to see.

    I know people are going to tell me "Well Sakurai wanted this character originally in this game" or "Nobody wants this or that" and stuff like that, but i still wanna say if Japan Exclusivity didnt stop Marth and Roy (Yes i know they were used to advertise the game in Melee) it shouldnt stop Ayumi or Takamaru. No to mention by that point when Melee was the latest entry, who knew who Mr Game and Watch was, before Melee who even knew who Captain Falcon and Ness were? The reason people know who they are now is BECAUSE of Smash and Smash has a tendency to make not so known characters, known. So familiar or not i really would have liked Ayumi Tachibana getting in the game. And Takamaru as well (And he seems to garnered some popularity thanks to Mario maker as well).

      @@ElFreakinCid Last time i checked only a few people gotten the game compared to other SNES releases. Majority of people didnt know what the game was or even heard of it back then due to it releasing late in SNES' life cycle. It was thanks to Smash bros why we are aware of the Mother series now.
      So if people knew who Ness was before Smash Bros 64, my guess would be that only a number of people who knew Ness already would be around the same or similar amount of people who currently knows characters like Ayumi Tachibana right now. And that includes the western releases of Famicom Detective Club.

      @@rooraa1861 True but i mention Captain Falcon during the first game. And during that time i would imagine not too many people (At least mre people than those who already knew Ness) wouldnt know or remember Captain Falcon. As the F-Zero X by that point was a year old, and the pilots in F-Zero X all first showed theyre faces in that game.
      While in F-Zero for SNES, you dont see anyone. If you read the instruction manual youll see Captain Falcon, but i doubt a lot of people read manuals even during that time. So i still think not too many people on the same level as all the others including Samus since shes older and had more games out and Super Metroid did phenomenally well to the point she was just iconic in her own right.
