Genevieve Bujold was 52 years during the pilot episode filming and was told to dye her hair that was fully gray at the time. That is 12 years older than Kate Mulgrew and was even older than Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard) when he first started filming ST Next Generation at age 47. She would have been a better fit as a guest starring admiral instead.
HELLO, she was SUPPOSED to be a poor fit; that's what would give it REALISM. Starfleet captains would not be TRAINED for that type of scenario, and so EVERYONE should seem out of place! Anyone who thinks Mulgrew is good, has a lower IQ than their shoe-size.
You don't WANT a great fit, you want a great VIBE that represents the situation. Here it was a very desperate plight, and they should have ACTED like it; but Mulgrew and Berman gave all the realism of "Gilligan's Island." "OOF! CHAKOTAY!!!"
Most of the time when someone "steps down", management has already told them to leave but don't want to tarnish their image by saying he or she got fired.
I think we can all agree Bujold was not captain quality... HOWEVER hearing that *Linda* *Hamilton* was considered for the role. *NOW* that would have be interesting to watch!
This is one of the first videos I’ve seen on the Bujold subject which isn’t trashing Bujold. I really enjoyed it nice job! I also respect she had the awareness to step away and allow the part to go to the right actress
What people don't get is how extraordinary hard the work conditions where. I saw an Interview with Brent Spiner and he said that they basically worked six days a week up to 12 hours a day PLUS the time that they needed to learn their text and this for 52 weeks per year. And this went on for SEVEN YEARS! There is no way that an internationally reowned movie actress like Bujold would have gotten through seven seasons like that. I guess if they had known form the beginning how long this show would run, they never had taken her in the first way. It still speaks volumes of her that she had a 26 episodes contract but stepped aside for someone else. It was not her fault, sometimes it just doesn't work.
While I've got my qualms with Voyager overall, I literally cant imagine anyone else besides Kate Mulgrew. Captain Janeway is perhaps my favorite captain depicted on any of the shows to date.
Well... no comparison needed. Kate Mulgrew is Star Trek Voyager. No way no one could do what she did. Her presence is the soul of the show. I can't imagine any other actress that could do this work as well as she did. I can only suspect the sense of " At least something right we did it " from the creators afterwards and now . Well done Mrs. Mulgrew 🙌👏👏👏👏🙌✨️🏆🥇
And Bob Denver is Gilligan. Nobody else could have done what HE did. His presence is the soul of the show. And both with equal realism of the given situation-- i.e. a complete joke where every episode begins like the first one, with no relation to the last. But Gilligan was SUPPOSED to be.
They still had a very expensive mess since the spray they used on Mulgrew's hair caused issues with the film in post production that caused them to have to film every scene she was in a second time after they had already finished the pilot, the disaster was so bad it was the most expensive pilot of any show at that point and cost a comparable amount to the Star Trek movies of that era. Thankfully the show managed to stay on budget after that.
Bujold was miscast, closing her eyes and whispering "engage". Apparently Kate Mulgrew strolled onto the bridge as if she owned and and said in her commanding tone "Engage!!"
How Voyager could have been a very different show if she did stay on. Kate Mulgrew is an amazing actress and JANEWAY is one of my favorite captains. So glad she got the part in the end. 🖖🏼
I wish this had included why they decided on Kate Mulgrew rather than the others who were in the running. Kate was the best choice; she made Janeway strong, confident, and deserving of the rank. I would follow her anywhere.
They chose Bujold sight unseen because of her academy award creds, she was never auditioned. They had some actresses who HAD auditioned, though. Once Bujold fell through, they reevaluated the best candidates, and chose Mulgrew. Guess they should have observed Rule of Acquisition #218: Always know what you're buying.
Agreed about the emphasis on swagger. There's a boldness to command. Basically, "I got this far doing it my way. Ain't nobody going to tell me now. This is my ship, goddammit!"
Mulgrew's Janeway would last FIVE SECONDS in any realistic scenario, with her smug arrogance. But as written, she beat the Kobyashi Maru test with her ATTITUDE test.
Mulgrew's performance was robotic and empty for the first half of the show. Took her a long time to start giving off the mama bear vibe she was supposed to.
I think we all know a little bit about this story but I've never heard the details. Thank you for this video. I feel like I was a little unjustly harsh in my criticisms of Bujold before.
Also, Mulgrew definitely gained by Bujold's departure, as the producers must have explained the lack of enthusiasm and told Kate to look alive out there.
I think she would have grown into it. There is no doubt that she is a passionate and accomplished actress. Just watch her ending monologue and subsequent scene with Richard Burton in "Anne of the Thousand Days". ("One thousand days ... Just a thousand ...") However, she's difficult to work with. I have heard that numerous times. It all worked out the way it was supposed to. Kate Mulgrew is fantastic in everything she does. Red from "Orange is the New Black" will stay with me forever. So will Captain Janeway.
The problem with Bujold is that she refused to audition, and some of the producers were more concerned with scoring an Academy Award winning actress than casting the right actor for the part. If she'd auditioned properly, they would have had a much better indication of her suitability for the role. The fact that she wasn't willing to audition should also have been a huge red flag. i mean....why wouldn't you audition, unless either a monstrous ego or a lack of ability was to blame.
Kate Mulgrew is and can only ever of been the only Human able to be Janeway. Everything about her was and is and shall always be perfection. In all of things she does she is also the top top top of the game. This is fact not personal.

I SO wanted Genevieve to get the part. I refused to watch the show for two years after I found out she left the series. Glad I came back. Voyager is my fave though I have to be careful to whom I reveal that.
I wondered why she was so sought after for this role, but I think her French-Canadian background made her an interesting choice and maybe blinded the casters to other choices.
I worked as a P.A. before and hated it. It was 16 hr. days though and Sundays off. I made a promise I would never do that again. Other crew members had to drive back and forth one hour drive one way to the city they live in. One production manager who did a workshop stated, that would be an exhausting day with little sleep and potential dangerous risks. Like getting into a car accident. He talked about making it clear to have a lawyer and let the company know if anything of the sort happened, they would be sued.
Oh they can still have very long work days on some TV shows & work what they call "Fraturdays," where filming will start late on Friday nights & run into early Saturday mornings. Some of the scheduling comes from the type of show being made or scene requirements.
I think it is unlikely that Voyager would have survived had Bujold stayed with the show and continued as Captain Janeway. Seeing the small amount of footage there is of Bujold a couple of times in the past I do find it very timid in the way it is delivered and played by her and she does seem completely unsure of what she is doing although that possibly would be expected for a brand new show and a new character and that maybe she was already feeling uncomfortable before filming started, plus we don't know how it would have developed going forward but I don't think we would have had a seven season run of Voyager if Bujold had stayed. Also the feel with the other characters in those couple of scenes that I have seen does not feel comfortable. With Paris or Kim it seems a little uncomfortable and unsure on their part with what they are getting from Bujold but again it could have been the fact that it was early days in shooting but I do not get that same sense when you watch the Mulgrew version of the same scenes. I don't think it was terrible with the scenes that Bujold did however I am not sure that if she had continued viewers of the time would have latched on and enjoyed Voyager as they did with Kate Mulgrew as Janeway. Also until you said it in the video - never knew Nana had said she would play Janeway and do both shows. I wonder how that could have worked??
While Nana would have done well in either part, both would have been a bit much. I'm glad Nana was able to concentrate on being Kira. She and Mulgrew remain my favorite Trek women.
I guess that's why Michael Piller stormed off the show in disgust, because it was SO STUPID: they're all enemies great danger, and yet it looks like "Gilligan's Planet." What did Han Solo say? Don't get WHAT? Janeway would not last FIVE SECONDS if she was that cocky in ANY realistic scenario. Voyager is for CHILDREN.
I can see why producers choose Bijold first. She had international star recognition, everyone including fans knew her work. Only thing Kate Mulgrew had was failed Mrs Columbia tv show. I also didn't think very nice of her making fun of Bijold accent or acting style. She might have worked out if Rick Berman and production crew given her time to adapt tv production schedule.
Seven pages a day? Jeez-Louise! Here I am thinking two pages a day on a student film is a great achievement. Really puts it in perspective. As for the incident itself, these things happen. I imagine the actress herself would be accustomed to more time for rehearsal and discovery. It's not for everyone, and it takes a lot to stand up and say, 'I can't do this'. Very beautiful actress.
I wish they got her back to play the captain in the two parter equinox, it would of been really intresting and think I she could of played that role really well.
Good summary of a fascinating time in VOY history. I assume she was going for more of an "elder statesman" type of performance like early TNG's Picard. But we already had that
Cold and stiff. Grateful she stepped down - Kate Mulgrew’s Janeway was formative for showing a female captain was just as competent as any other Trek captain!
Genevieve Bujold!-Is A French-Canadian Woman!-She Would Be-Great!-In That Role!&Would Do It-Justice!-Raymond "Mike" Hong!&(Bonne Chance!-Genevieve&Everyone!-Mike!)😎👍!!!!!!!!!
I think that one of three things would have happened, if Bujold had not quickly realized that she was wrong for the job. 1. She would have, in time, grown into the role. We would still remember Janeway, but we would remember her differently. 2. After a series of substandard performances, the UPN exec's would have pulled the plug on Voyager. And Enterprise would never have happened. 3. They would have killed off Janeway in a surprise Kazon ambush, and there would be a statue of Chakotay (Star Trek's first Native American captain) somewhere in the American midwest.
Ah, yes, The monolithic Captain "Chakotay", whose first name would not ever be revealed unless we had seen that obscure episode (It was "Angus"). Admittedly, having the show change the Captain in the middle of the series would have been a new move for Star Trek, although it had been considered (ST:TNG Season 3 ending to Season 4 premiere). It would have possibly emphasized the dangers that Voyager was experiencing in the Delta quadrant, that anyone on the crew could potentially be killed off.
Garett Wang said that they would’ve replaced Harry Kim with a female character, had Gary Graham replaced Bujold as male captain Janeway, since the studio wanted minimum 3 women in the main cast.
Man they hated Harry Kim they were even going to kill him off but Garett got of the 50 most beautiful people's list in People magazine and they decided to keep him.
Before discussing Janeway. VGR was to be a series like no other. It was Lost in Space/Space:1999 fusion. It was meant to have a Chris Boucher flavor(Blake’s 7) and theme. I wanted to see Piller and Taylor to be full control as writers to the very end. But they where just faded aside and before Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman there was Brannon Braga. And should I say more. Because of this individual, VGR really didn’t get better until Season 5. But back to Janeway, Kate Mulgrew is the best improvement of casting and with her costars and only a handful of episodes that is memorable. Mulgrew is the final piece of tape that held this series for 7 full seasons. If she was not cast, guest actresses such as Joanna Cassidy and McCormick would have had the command, presence and attitude to be Captain Janeway. Hell, They could have giving Marina Sirtis as Captain Deana Troi as she had commanding presence later on. Genevieve Bujold was both wooden and a interesting mistake. As it was semi entertaining to see she wasn’t working out!!!! Overall great video.
She's a good actress no doubt. But she's just not fit for space travel. All that faster than light speed travel can wear a body down quickly. Maybe they could bring her back as an Admiral in Starfleet Command.
You describing her as "Almost Vulcan" could have clicked if her character was Vulcan. Like imagine a Vulcan starfleet captain as the lead of a different show
You kind of touched on what the problem was, she was a movie actor more suited to whatever types of movies she's been in. I'm not sure if it's me contrasting with what we got, but she definitely looks out of place in those clips, not on the same wavelength as the other characters.
Tell me what you think in the comments below... She was as stiff as a board. Her eyes were as lifeless as a doll. Her hair reminded me of the judge from "The Wall". Her lackluster performance coupled with her lack of enthusiasm created a horrible match. Thankfully events provided us with Kate.
I think Bujold was good as Janeway, but Mulgrew was used to a demanding TV production, and was a good fit for the show. Mulgrew's voice projected better for TV and was more animated. Voyager was one of the better Star Trek spin-offs. Mulgrew as Janeway seemed to embrace the role and the series was successful.
Curious that you think Marina Sirtis grew in to the role as Troi. IMHO it was the opposite - she started out great, like an aspirational Trek character, feminine, warm, vulnerable, delicate, soft and beautiful, but over the years grew to be more like Marina: bitchy, hard, condescending, losing her femininity.
Alone the soft wisper of sn engage would have conviced me that she was not right for the part. Not even in universe. I mean engage is a command not something you say to yourself....alldough I never understood why engage was sayed to start a flight in warp because when I think of the commang engage I think of attacking and not just peacefully travelling.
Not bad ! Please try to keep your mic volume consistent from take to take as it can be quite annoying when watching late at night (others sleeping). Cheers !
15th..! Heyy...ahh yes, I remember this story back then....Shame it didn't work out for her.....but I always Loved Kate Mulgrew since her days on the TV daytime soap RYAN's HOPE as Mary Ryan, and Mrs Columbo.. .....yea...I'm 60....
I've watched a number of the Columbo movies, and it's a story point rattling around in my head that through some oddity in the space-time continuum, a disheveled man in a rumpled suit and trench coat (who smokes a cigar) appears on the bridge of the Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D). He asks a lot of questions of both Kirk and Spock, and they are both increasingly agitated. They both express this agitation to Columbo, and then Janeway appears saying something to the effect of "I don't think he's so bad." Columbo and Janeway lock eyes, and there's an immediate attraction. 😁😁😁😁😁
for main character, best actor don't try to force a role, they make the character as best as it can be, if they know it won't work, the smart one pull out rather trash the whole project.
You sugar coated Berman's dislike of Bujold. He never wanted her and did everything he could to get her to leave! And Mulgrew's hot romance was with the very director of Voyager!
Bujold was already 50 in this video, she probably didn't have any youthful vigor to draw upon, otherwise I loved her years earlier, especially in the movie Coma. She made the correct choice here.
Sad but true. The people running Voyager didn't even understand that an ensign is supposed to make lieutenant. Given that, it's amazing the show was as good as it was.
@@joelellis7035 I found this on Digital Spy : It seems producers were keen to hire an actress with prior cult credentials. Also under consideration were Lynda Carter of Wonder Woman fame, Buck Rogers veteran Erin Gray and Lindsay Wagner, star of The Bionic Woman.
Kate was the best capitan in all star trek saga...Captain Picard in the Delta Quadrant would either have been assimilated by the Borg or lost the ship in some pointless war...
Linda Hamilton really made the wrong choice when she turned down Voyager, I know I would've watched, she would have made a Great Captain, and there wouldn't have been any lack of enthusiasm in her acting. Off the top of my head I can't think of 1 awesome part she's played since T2 until know. Here's an example of an actor becoming irrelevant after turning down a part.
Lindsay Wagner was a hot favourite for the role at the time and should have got it so we would have been spared Mulgrew impersonating Katharine Hepburn for 7 seasons
I think, if she had prepared better, it might have gone better. In sure her pedigree would have shone through in the end. I'm sure kate was the better choice though.
Bujold was a lot older than Mulgrew! They had to die Bujold's hair as she was already grey. It was too far along in Bujold's life to change how she worked, her life with a young child, and do that hectic schedule.
Genevieve Bujold was 52 years during the pilot episode filming and was told to dye her hair that was fully gray at the time. That is 12 years older than Kate Mulgrew and was even older than Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard) when he first started filming ST Next Generation at age 47. Cudos to her for realizing she wasn't the best fit and stepping aside.
Not many people can swallow their ego and realize they aren't what is needed.
I'm pretty sure the producers also did some persuading from their end. I mean, those clips of her "acting" were HORRIBLE!!!!!!!
@The Best Western It was better then Ds9

Lindsey Wagner was considered too

I'd say paramount and Startrek franchise dodged the bullet when Bujold resigned after 2 days, otherwise they would have a very expensive mess.
Jeri Taylor said exactly that. If it had taken a longer time for Bujold to realize she was wrong, Voyager would have been torpedoed.

The footage is on the dvd extras, we honestly dodged a bullet there.
yeah, search for it on youtube, it's out there to watch. It's as stiff as cardboard. just plain awful.
@@joelellis7035 Funny that it happened that way. Maybe his parents were fans of that old 2D television series "MacGyver".
It happens a lot. Emilia Clark took over for Jennifer Ehle as Dani in GOT. Lots of pilots change casting.
Linda Hamilton would have made an amazing Janeway
Garett Wang said that they would’ve replaced Harry Kim with a female character, had Gary Graham replaced Bujold as male captain Janeway, since the studio wanted minimum 3 women in the main cast.
I wonder if they would have had the balls to keep a woman stuck as a lowly ensign for 7 years.
Man they hated Harry Kim they were even going to kill him off but Garett got of the 50 most beautiful people's list in People magazine and they decided to keep him.
Her scenes, the ones I've watched, were great!
A Vulcan Janeway might have been interesting !
So would Susan Gibney. I can see the memes now: FLED 70,000 LIGHT YEARS TO ESCAPE GEORDI'S STALKING!
Joanna Cassidy would have been AWESOME!!
Still my favorite captain Best in opinion thought she knew what to do better than everyone of them in my opinion
I had a massive crush on Capt Janeway back in the day.
She's a good actress no doubt. But she's just not fit for space travel. All that faster than light speed travel can wear a body down quickly. Maybe they could bring her back as an Admiral in Starfleet Command.
she does look like a lady who has turned her resignation letter in, but she has to work for 2 more weeks
Excellent video.
I found Mulgrew to be a little over the top.
Tell me what you think in the comments below...
She was as stiff as a board.
Her eyes were as lifeless as a doll.
Her hair reminded me of the judge from "The Wall".
Her lackluster performance coupled with her lack of enthusiasm created a horrible match.
Thankfully events provided us with Kate.
i never heard of Bujold till it was said she walked out and Mulgrew had the part .
Denise Crosby might have made a good Janeway. She’s sharp, energetic and articulate; still, Mulgrew is the one.
liked her, too. She worked.
Shes the the one from the show id watch didn't care to watch the others
Heard about Bujold's departure before, but always thought it was because she had difficulty pronouncing all the technical terms.
I had no idea there would have been a different actress for Janeway.
Not bad ! Please try to keep your mic volume consistent from take to take as it can be quite annoying
when watching late at night (others sleeping). Cheers !
I like how you tell everybody to subscribe and hit the like button before you even start it. It usually means it sucks.
Janeway could have been no other than Mulgrew, the best captain SS has ever had.
To see Bujold at her best, watch her in Anne of the Thousand Days!
Would Voyager have survived had Bujold stayed on?
I'm sure it would've found it's footing and she wouldn't have been so wooden in the initial taping.
Nope no way it would have made it lol.
I answer that elsewhere in the reviews so I won't cut and paste. Short answer: possibly, but in a different form.
No. Not judging by her presence from the screenshots. She doesn't look like she had the strength.
Hell no. It'd have been dead in the water post-premiere of the pilot episode.
I saw that video of Visitor wanting the job on Voyager I would like to see it again but I can't find it.
Nana as the Captain? Nah 🤪
She did a great Job Playing the role. I would have loved seeing Geneve Bujold play the character, but Kate Mulgrew was the right choice.
It is still unsettling that Tuvix is killed by Janeway
@@ramjeesaradi No, it's not.
You sugar coated Berman's dislike of Bujold. He never wanted her and did everything he could to get her to leave! And Mulgrew's hot romance was with the very director of Voyager!
No it wasn’t. It was with Tim Hagen, whom she later married.
Janeway and Seven are the Queens of Star Trek
You'll get no argument from me!
Can understand why viewers like seven but Janeway no.......plus ds9 was much better series and cast
Kate Mulgrew was amazing in the role.
She was soft spoken and not as commanding as Kate. There could have been a very different VOY if she found her footing!!! Would it have survived!!
Another great video to watch on this topic is one by junkball.
Bujold was already 50 in this video, she probably didn't have any youthful vigor to draw upon, otherwise I loved her years earlier, especially in the movie Coma. She made the correct choice here.
I thought k m was 1st choice I didn't know there was another actress before her
Interesting 🤔
Lmao 🤣 love the title
At 0:11, where does this clip come from?
@@Sigma.Infinity the chaotica episode
@@Be_the_bathang Thanks.
Her casting was an early red flag that this franchise was in the wrong hands... It's too bad it took Voyager and Enterprise to figure that out.
Sad but true. The people running Voyager didn't even understand that an ensign is supposed to make lieutenant. Given that, it's amazing the show was as good as it was.
I think this actress should play the role of Captain Garret.
I heard both Lynda Carter and Lyndsay Wagner were up for the role as well, any truth to this ?
Not so sure about those two, but I did hear Erin Gray was considered.
By the end of Caretaker Kate was Janeway
Mulgrew SLAYED the role of Janeway ....
More Nana Visitor.. Damn, I wouldn't have complained..
How the hell did she think it was going to work? Catch a wormhole back to DS9 every 2 weeks? Haha.
Linda Hamilton?!
We could have had Linda Hamilton?!
Kate was the best capitan in all star trek saga...Captain Picard in the Delta Quadrant would either have been assimilated by the Borg or lost the ship in some pointless war...
I doubt Bujold could even have a decent working relationship with Robert Beltran, Roxanne Dawson, and Jeri Ryan.
How the hell did that first actress pass a screening?
They didn't give her one. She was an Oscar winner and gave her the part.
you cant see her ears she may be Vulcan after all
Gary Graham would have been sweet!
Bujold might have grown into the part and made it her own, given time. Kate Mulgrew was already there. She knocked it out of the park from Day One.
Bujold was a lot older than Mulgrew! They had to die Bujold's hair as she was already grey. It was too far along in Bujold's life to change how she worked, her life with a young child, and do that hectic schedule.
