  • Using timecode with your footage can make editing and syncing your clips much easier. In this video, we show how to use the Diety TC-1 timecode generator with different cameras including the DJI Action 2, DJI Action 3, GoPro 9/10/11, and pretty much any other camera, including drones.

    Great summary of how you can put timecode onto such a variety of cameras. I use GoProLabs QRcode app as an easy way to add the metadata timecode sync on multiple GoPros (using GoProlabs firmware for Hero 7-11). The new Hero 12 and 13 have this built into the standard firmware. With the metadata timecode, I use a new type of PC application called Multi-View HD Pro 2, which reads the GoPro metdata timecode, and automatically syncs for previewing up to 8 GoPro videos instantly after I import the files. I don't have to make multi-cam clips, proxies or wait for rendering to do this. I can view all videos in split screen together as if it were real-time live. Worth checking out.

      Thank you for sharing this information. It's been very helpful in understanding the intricacies of GoPro timecode. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to use that software on my MacBook Pro

    Don't forget that TC is vital for audio recording as well. Your drone footage may very well need to be synched to audio footage and with no scratch audio embedded on drone video files, TC is even more vital on drone footage than on cine footage.

    16:00 why have you (or people in general) have set up their timeline tc to start at 01:00:00:00 instead of 00:00:00:00 ? I've set mine to be exactly 0, makes more sense to me - or am I missing something?

      It is an industry standard. I believe it came about because you very often have to add stuff to the beginning of a completed timeline but you can't just move things around because you may have sound effects, visual effects, or other things that are tied to specific time markers and can't be changed.

    Do keep in mind, QTchange looks for file creation time INSIDE the metadata, but if that does not exists, it falls back to the file creation time from the OS.
    That is fine and dandy, but ONLY if you copy the footage the right way! (A 'normal' copy can give a file creation time of the time of the copy, thus then all is lost...)

      I recently recorded GoPro Max footage while in Spain. After copying the files to my computer, I lost all the metadata (location, time, etc.). What is the correct procedure for copying GoPro Max footage to preserve metadata?

    Dear @FilmmakerCentral
    Greetings from India! I recently watched your video on timecode, and I must say it was the best I've seen on the topic. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise in such a clear and concise way. I learned a lot from your video and will be using the information you provided to improve my own timecode workflow. Thank you again for creating such a valuable resource.

    Hi there, nice video with great info, thanks. Would you happen to know if that Deity C21 3.5mm to USB-C cable works with a Tentacle Sync-E to Osmo Action 4? I don't see any reason it wouldn't as it should just provide an Audio out to Mono L signal to the dii but I wondered if you had tried it. Thanks again!

    Since you're jam syncing, as opposed to running a deity tc-1 on each camera, how much drift have you noticed on the clips near the end of your shoot?

    Thank you for this video! If you're trying to also store your master audio along with the video on say a GoPro/OA does that work with timecode? Is timecode also stored in the audio track somewhere on the GoPro/OA when you set it up as you've shown in the video or is it stored somewhere else?

    • @FilmmakerCentral
      @FilmmakerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is embedded into the video file.

      @@FilmmakerCentral Thanks. BTW, @12:42 if your entire post process is with Resolve you can edit/tweak/offset the timecodes within Resolve. There's an offset feature that changes things in the Resolve metadata and everything in Resolve will work with the new offset timecodes.

    So timecode is more something used in a larger production not only to sync some clips which are shot together, but also to get them in the right order and placement on the timeline?
    For scene shots using multiple cameras I would prefer to use Davinci Resolves feature in the edit tab to auto sync based on audio. Even drone footage when having audio can be synced that way. I put all clips of a scene onto a timeline all stacked up at the beginning.Then select all, right click select "Auto-Align Clips"-> "Based On Waveform" and they are placed in the correct order on the timeline.

    • @FilmmakerCentral
      @FilmmakerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you can use the audio sync, it works well, but drone shots don't typically have audio and when there is no matching audio because the cameras are too far apart, it doesn't work.

    • @zorrothebug
      @zorrothebug ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilmmakerCentral Just before the drone takes off into distance, talk to it while also recording with another camera and you'll get the audio sync. 😉
      But I get your point 😊

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zorrothebug No drone that I own records audio, so that doesn't work. Back when we used GoPros, that would work, but the DJI Mavic 3 and DJI Avata have no recording ability. Even if they had audio recording, if you stop and restart recording in the air, you would lose the sync again.

    Thank you so much , you have solved my problem with action 2 ;) it’s really nice that action 3 supports that out of the box! Qq, is it still splits the clip into 5 minute chunks?

    • @FilmmakerCentral
      @FilmmakerCentral  ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't 5 minute chunks. MicroSD cards have a 4gb file size limit so the cameras split it at about 3.8gb. Depending on your resolution and frame rate, the amount of time will be in each clip will vary.

      It's not the sd card that has that limit, it's the os and if it's 32 or 64bit

    Instead of filming the Deity TC1, I could just film my phones clock app - right? I am not getting the frames, but …

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The phone's clock would get you within one second, vs timecode is frame accurate. Secondly, you would have to shoot the phone's clock at the beginning of every shot.
