Your tip in the previous video to use soapy water is life changing! Thank you for this! I realized that the ruling pen that I bought last year (and didn’t work) was the exact same one that you linked (other than choosing a black handle instead of green). When I dipped it in a bit of water with a drop of dish soap (Seventh Generation Free & Clear), it worked perfectly! It was a complete night and day! I’m sooo exccited to use masking fluid successfully and more frequently. Thanks! 😁
Yay! I’m so glad you can use your ruling pen now.
I am so happy that I came upon your You Tube channel. I kept thinking that the leaves can’t possibly come out right after all of that masking….and then ……off comes the masking and your painting came to life and was stunning. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent. God bless. Can’t wait to tey your technique. Phyliss
Thank you Phyliss! It truly is a magical technique. I hope you enjoy it.

This was incredible!!! Thank you so much for sharing. I've tried using a masking pen and it didn't work at all. I'm so excited to try this instead.
I'm so glad! Be sure to check out the video on masking fluid tools - there’s two really good alternatives to the masking pens.

You’re welcome. I’m glad you liked it!
This is pretty amazing. I tried to paint some orchids a couple of weeks ago with a negative painting process. They turned out horrible and too saturated with color. I think I will re-evaluate the process I used and try them again using this masking fluid process. Thanks so much for the video!
Oh no. I hope you like the masking fluid method. Negative painting orchids sounds like a lovely idea!
very nice, thanks for the video! 😊🎨🖌
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. It's so beautiful!

Thank you!
You're welcome!
i got a little bit overwhemled with so many steps, ill have to rewatch it again🤔but looks amazing 👍
That’s why I tried to keep the painting subject simple. I promise it’s easy. You just alternate between masking fluid and paint. In the free download, I provided a value map that shows which leaves to mask in each layer!
stunning
Thank you! 😊
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Wow !
Fantastic! I subscribed....
Love this , do you have a favourite masking fluid ? As I am completely out and have to order more 😊 thank you 🍁
Yes, there’s a link in the video description. I like this blue one so you can see what you’re doing 😊
I just finished trying this!! Thank you for such a comprehensive step by step!! I happen to use the exact same masking fluid but i find that when i paint it, it easily gums up and i have to put on a second layer. My masking fluid layer isnt also as opaque as yours look when you paint it on. Do you do something else to your masking fluid? Any tips is greatly appreciated!!
I don’t do anything else to the masking fluid. Make sure to swirl it gently in the bottle before each use to mix it up, but don’t shake it (that causes bubbles). Also, make sure you’re blotting the soapy water off your brush before dipping in the masking fluid, so you’re not diluting the masking fluid. I also use a relatively large brush for the area I’m painting, which carries a good amount of masking fluid, so I get good coverage. You don’t have to spread the masking fluid thin. You can also paint a second coat over it if it seems too thin. Hope those tips help!
New follower here from Venezuela. Amazing! Thanks for sharing ❤ what kind of paper do you use?
I use Arches cold-pressed paper. It’s best to use 100% cotton paper for this many layers and the masking fluid.
The Masking Fluid doesn't stay fixed on the brush? I have to THROW AWAY my brushes and everything I use with Masking Fluid and I don't feel like painting with watercolors. Now that I see your videos I get excited to try watercolors again. I think my problem is the Masking Fluid, which is not the brand you use, it's Winsor and NEWTON. Thanks for sharing your video. Lovely🥰
You can save your brushes now!! I hope you’ll give masking fluid and watercolor another chance.
@@JackieHernandezWatercolor How long do you dry the watercolor layers before applying The Masking Fluid? Hours or 1 day between layers?
The paint must be completely dry before applying the masking fluid. For this painting, I dried the paint with a hair dryer, which works fine for this smaller size. If I’m not in a rush, I prefer to let the paint air dry for several hours or overnight. How long depends on your climate. For my more complex paintings, I apply the masking fluid, let it dry, then paint. Then, I let the paint dry overnight. Then, I repeat the process the next day.
Hello. One question, how many masking fluid layers can you paint on older masking layers in one artwork?
I don’t know if there is a maximum other than the masking fluid is harder to remove when it’s one thick layer. I usually only do four layers because that’s how many different values I create in my paintings. I limit myself to 4 values so there is good contrast between each layer. Hope that helps.
Thank you, this was helpful, Jackie. You do enjoyable art!
Does anyone know what kind of board/material it is that Jackie taped her paper to? I do not have a board yet to tape paper onto, as I do not understand yet whether it's better to use something (slightly) absorbant such as untreated wood, or to use something non-absorbant.
I tape my paper to 1/4” Plexi-glass. For larger paintings, I stretch my paper on Gatorboard. Both are non-absorbent.

HELP!!😂. How does the paint fron the first layer not reactivate when you apply the water for the 2nd wet in wet layer?
The masking fluid protects the leaves. The paint that is not covered with masking fluid MIGHT reactivate when you add the next layer, but it doesn’t matter because we’re using the same colors and building up the value with each layer. Also, for these paintings I use staining colors that don’t reactivate as easily. Hope that helps.
@@JackieHernandezWatercolor huge help....thank you🙏
Why do you wipe off the tape during every layer?
After wetting the paper, I wipe excess water off the tape so it doesn’t seep back on to the paper and create blooms at the edges. Same for the paint layers. The droplets on the tape will dry slower than the paint on the paper, so if you don’t wipe it off it can cause blooms or back runs at the edges.
@@JackieHernandezWatercolor thanks!

Me wishing I didn't have a latex allergy.
I haven’t tried it, but Pebeo makes a latex-free masking fluid.
Tried using masking fluid as you discribed on a painting I did a few years back. But when I took it off the color came up as well. The masking fluid was dry when I took it off so am at a loss.
Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching it. 😁🐕
It’s best to use staining pigments, like the Phthalo Green and Blue I used in this painting. They won’t lift easily. Granulating and non-staining pigments that lift easily don’t work as well under masking fluid. Also, make certain the paint is 100% dry before putting masking fluid on top. Hope that helps!
@@JackieHernandezWatercolor Thanks, I'll try that next time. 😁🐕
This will happen with poor quality paper.
Old masking fluid can also cause this issue ❤
Brilliant!
