Just a tip…..you can refill your empty disposable Pigma Micron/Fineliner pens if the nibs are still good… just pull the nib with tweezers and syringe in Indian/Bombay ink… which is both cheap AND waterproof!
Thanks so much for that tip! That's the first time I've seen it mentioned, even watching all kinds of Tangle videos, and they use A LOT of ink. I sure didn't want to have to buy a whole set again. :)
I painted some of the background patterns and textures using the techniques I teach in my course Creative Textures for Watercolor. You can check it out here: jackiehernandez.studio/ctw
I agree! I went to Rhode Island and went through the Zentangle course to become a CZT. I love the portability and just a few supplies. It was my thoughts exactly to make one of these for my Zentangle on the go!
Idk if this has been said, but these would be fun to store in a pocket of a homemade junk journal. You could add poetry, quotes, gratitude statements or scripture. I'm doing this tomorrow! ❤❤
I was thinking that too! I bought some small journals this size at hobby lobby and I put one scripture verse for memorization on each page. It would be fun to do it on watercolor paper with fun backgrounds.
This is a fantastic idea using old-school techniques! I say "old school" because I am old and taught school for 34 years using the foldables like this. :-) We called them "Smoosh Books" and they are so useful, even to teach kids how to follow directions, making one as a way to practice procedure-following in Science. I think my first pre-painted sketchbook from your awesome video will have to pay tribute to the Smoosh. It will likely be a cell division or rock cycle theme, made surreal by the colors and doodles! Talk about skills you never knew you needed again after seventh grade. :-)
What a great idea for making listening and following instructions safe to practice, and a requirement. Would love to know more, and probably so would other teachers.
This is the first time a learn something that I can really try to do and maintain. Choosing one simple shape and filling one page while drinking morning coffee is realistic. I have been dragging my travel sketch kit with me for 3 years, and tried to excite myself by changing it at least 10 times but was never able to finish a full sketch even when traveling. I have a very busy life and when I have time I cannot escape my family duties. I will try this tomorrow morning!
Wonderful! I hope it’s a practice you can enjoy and maintain. Keeping it super simple was key for me. I’m working on some more videos about mark-making coming up soon 😊
I love this idea. Often when I travel I want to keep a traveler's notebook as a journal of the journey. But I find that I don't have the time to curate the perfect page while on vacation. Your sketchbooks just gave me an idea to create small, beautiful pages can take with me and use for journaling and doodling while on a trip. Then when I come home I take the book apart and tape my beautiful daily notes into the travelers notebook with all of the photos and ephemera that correspond to the diary entries. 😊
Wonderful idea!! I’ve been thinking these would be wonderful to capture colors, patterns, and small sketches while traveling. It would be a little book that reminds me of the feeling of a place without the pressure of doing full sketches.
I was amused when I realized how you were making these! I have some, made of regular paper, made 25-30 years ago, before watercolor got popular again! Thank you for bringing back an old idea! I’ll be reviving this in my craft room! Cheers, nice video!
Thank you for taking the time to share this with the rest of us. I'd like to start a doodling practice and these on the go foldable books will be perfect. I love all things stationary, so I'm planning to make a few books at a time, put them in a traveler's notebook to carry around in my pocketbook...great for taking out with me to the beach or the park or just to have on the go this summer!
I LOVE IT!! I will definitly try this for my summer vacation. I've been strugling for years to build a consistency on my sketchbooks, but this year I have one litte notebook that I always bring it with me. The difference is inmense, I discover myself drawing a lot just because I'm not with the presure of having a long period of time focusing on it. And I really love the ocean theme sketchbook, it is gorgeous!!❤❤
Now I know what to do, creatively, with those many practice sheets covered with countless leaves, or circles or blobs of color as I learned more and more about my wonderful watercolor paints. I also love to add marks of all kinds and need to improve those skills. This is a great video to bring all of those skills together! I am SO impressed with your clear, easy-to-follow directions. You are making a big difference in my painting skills, and I often mention you to others who are just beginning in watercolor as one of the best artists to follow. Thank you!
I'm here from the Hellen Wells one-piece sketchbook video you referenced! Beautiful works!!!! I'm in love with how you doodle patterns over them. I'm ready to make these with flowers and all the things I'm inspired by and fill a little library! 📚🐳🐙🦩🐚🦋🦢🌻💐🌌🫀💖 Love from MN
I like polychromos as there is no waxiness, so you can layer or blend as much as you want. Also they are available open stock if you're not a "collector" like me that must have whole sets. 😁
Thank you so much for all the great ideas. You are right, the blank page is such a creativity killer. I am putting some of your ideas to work today, I especially love the book filled with shapes.
You’re welcome! Hopefully this takes the pressure (and some of the weight) off from bringing too many supplies. I love the simplicity of taking just one of these books and a single writing utensil.

Well made video! I haven’t made these in a long time. I made mini junk journals with them, but I will try the doodling and painting idea. What a wonderful idea. Thank you for sharing. I have been doing that for 22 months now, and I am just looking for a new way to do art and journal daily. I love your format.
@@JackieHernandezWatercolor I did the first one and just need to do the inside pages. This is so much fun and i see many more of these in my future. ❤️
I love this video! Making Zines and Accordion fold books brought back memories of making these with my kids when they were in school! I love the idea of making these as little on the go art books! I am definitely in a season of not having much free time but really want to create and practice using watercolors and other mediums. Your suggestion of pre-painting backgrounds on smaller diy books, brilliant!! I have an art journal with mixed media backgrounds but it’s big and bulky so I never take it with me when I am away from home. Travel watercolor and limited pallet pencils, more brilliance! Thank you for sharing these wonderful sketchbook ideas. I have lots of Stampin Up scrapbook paper, which is like light cardstock. Some of it is similar to your samples and will work perfectly with my vast array of stamps. Also bought some watercolor paper tonight so I can paint too.
Moleskine small watercolor paper blank books have the best texture paper i have ever used. I love all of their types of paoer for art. Some can use a little clear gesso for really wet medium.

Hi hi! I am new to your channel and love the fun, intuitive designs on blank pages! Gorgeous! I have made 8 of your little handy books already (this could become an addiction)! So fun! You work fast. 😊 I have an entire lesson on stenciling in my course, Creative Textures for Watercolor. I teach five different methods for using stencils with watercolor and lots of other fun ways to add patterns to watercolor washes. I hope you’ll check it out.

Thank you, you are very clear and easy to follow. This is a great idea and a good way to use art that didnt turn out how you wanted. Love no wasting of matterials 😊. Going to make some now !!
This video is absolutely lovely!! Thank you so much for going in depth about how to fold these mini sketch books, it’s very helpful for me as a beginner zine maker!
Wonderful! Glad you came up in my feed. I also loved Ohn Mar Win’s idea for pre-painting pages. Because of that I was able to keep a travel journal on a recent trip. Love the idea of the little sketchbooks and I’m going to check that out. Great channel, looking forward to seeing more. 🙂
Great tutorial, thank you so much. I'm a pensioner and have lots of time to fill with arty pursuits! This will keep me happy for many weeks to come - and will be a great way to use my old painting stash - I knew if I kept them they'd come in handy some day, lol.
Excellent content! Useful and inspiring. I'm excited to have a second life for a lot of my practice work AND to have a pocket sketchbook on me at all times.
New subscriber here! Thank you for taking the time to inspire and encourage us in a such a sweetly manner. I see I have a lot of videos to catch up on to help get me out my creative slump. As for colored pencils, I have tried cheapest to more expensive and in an unexpected "twist", I have found Crayola Twistables Color Pencils much to my liking! (bought for my son ages ago). They never need sharpening unless you desire to refine the tip with an emery board and the colors are quite nice.
Just found your channel with this video and am so excited to give this a try! You asked about colored pencils. Since I started with them before I fell in love with watercolor I highly recommend Prismacolor colored pencils for use with watercolor paper. I’ve had great results with them. The smooth and creamy feel is delightful to work with, however, they are soft and require a light touch imho, to avoid breakage. The only other pencil I can recommend is Faber-Castell Polychromos. I haven’t tried them but lots of artists love them and they’re supposed to be sturdy. Oh, and another is the Derwent inktense pencils. You can activated them with water and they lay down some gorgeous color, but do work best with hot-pressed paper also imho. Hope that helps you! Thanks for the great video on diy sketchbooks. Blessings 💗Rita
@rmuller366 Thanks for the info - I'm just starting to use watercolour pencils and it's so useful to know which work best! My pension won't stretch to trying different brands each week, so your kindness in sharing will be very helpful ☺ 💖 Eileen in Scotland

Yes! Now you can transform them into something new. Have fun creating these!
I have only just discovered you. These little sketchbooks are so inspiring. I am going to try making one right now. Thank you.❤

Excellent content! Useful and inspiring. I'm excited to have a second life for a lot of my practice work AND to have a pocket sketchbook on me at all times.
Thank you! Hope you enjoy your new pocket sketchbooks.

Thanks for the tip. I think my kids have some Twistables. I'll give them a try.
this video is just lovely and inspiring - thanks so much
You are so welcome!
I am so excited to make one, these are wonderful! Thank you for sharing these.
Yay! Have fun 😊
Thank you for the recommendations. I’ll look into those.

Thanks for the info - I'm just starting to use watercolour pencils and it's so useful to know which work best! My pension won't stretch to trying different brands each week, so your kindness in sharing will be very helpful ☺ 💖 Eileen in Scotland
