    Awesome clear introduction to Procreate! Thanks for the step-by-step in-video instructions.
    I have my own convenient method of tracing a photo -- change it to B&W on my laptop, print it out to the size I need, and use a light table to trace directly onto watercolour paper. But there are clearly many advantages to Procreate, like smoothing out my wobbly lines, and working in layers, and undoing, and saving files.... I may have to put an iPad and Procreate on my wish list!

      Your method is great too. Sometimes I like the non-digital methods 😊 But the iPad does have its advantages.

    Procreate reminds me of Photoshop I used at a small local newspaper. I would have preferred Procreate for its greater simplicity. Your instructions are clear and straightforward. Good job.

    You have saved my sanity! Yesterday was another day of frustration to the max, while completing a drawing for a portrait watercolor. I said to myself, “I’ve GOT to find another way”!
    And then during my morning iPhone trolling, you magically appeared!
    Many thanks for your clear, calm instructions and generosity in freely sharing your knowledge with all of us.
    I’ve been a “purist” about doing my own drawings, but at the age of 81, it’s time to stop stressing and enjoy painting!
    Thanks again!❤

    I hope you don’t take this offensively, seriously, I mean that… I have sold a lot of paintings… I used to say the exact same thing I didn’t want to spend my time drawing when I could be painting. And I did that for years. But about a year ago, I started drawing everything and my painting skills have changed to. I used to say that my favorite part of, the process was the painting, but I think that’s because I only really traced most of my paintings. I’m now absolutely love the drawing part. It really challenges my brain. And I should also state that I am now retired and just keep a daily sketchbook. Enjoy your day!

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      No offense at all. It’s wonderful that after years of painting, you learned to draw and love it. One of my personal projects this year is to improve my drawing skills. My motivation is to learn ink & wash style of watercolor. I think drawing scares a lot of people and keeps them from exploring their creativity. I hope starting with tracing helps more people unlock their creativity and try new things.

    • @ILoveFountainPensCdn
      @ILoveFountainPensCdn 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I think that both points are valid.
      As an ultra beginner ‘artist’, I think tracing is a good way to begin to learn watercolour painting, in the same way that you’d give a child a colouring book with crayons. No, they won’t learn to draw, but that can come later. I find having only one step to complete (wetting my paints) before I start painting makes it a lot less intimidating. When I ‘draw’ (copy by hand from a learn to draw book), it’s often several days or sometimes even weeks before I paint the image.
      I’ve also heard that the best way to learn how to improve your watercolour painting skills is by drawing, which makes a lot of sense as you’re figuring our proportions, values etc., prior to filling it in with watercolour paints.
      Personally, right now, I’m just trying to figure out the difference between warm and cool watercolour paints, especially the primaries! 😊

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Great points. I feel the same way about just getting into the painting. I am working on my drawing skills in parallel. For now, I’m more comfortable with a brush in my hand 😊

That being said tracing is very helpful when learning watercolor painting, even tracing your own drawings so you’re able to paint your own work without the worry of messing it up. • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can create a custom canvas size in Procreate. After you tap the plus to add a canvas, tap the overlapping black rectangles in the upper right corner. Then you can set a custom size. After exporting the file, you can print it on multiple pieces of paper or have a printer print it on larger paper. Another option is to project the finished drawing onto your paint surface.

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’re welcome. In Procreate you can create a custom canvas size. After tapping + to add a canvas, select the overlapping black rectangles in the upper right corner. Then you can set the size to match your painting. You could print the larger image at a print shop. I think there’s also a way to print a large image tiled on regular size paper, which you could tape together.

    I wonder if you could do a trace-for floral line art series.
    It is never so straightforward to simplify when looking at complex flowers. I was intrigued by your sketchbook discipline and I thought of asking you to consider this art request. I think skilful floral line art takes experience. Florals are readily available all around us so there is no danger of copyright issues. ❤Cheers.

      Great topic idea. I will add it to my list. For a quick tip, if working from a photo, I would turn it into a value study first. That always helps me see what the most important lines are to trace. Check out my How to Design a Painting video for more on using a value study in the tracing process.

    • @JackieHernandezWatercolor
      @JackieHernandezWatercolor  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you don’t have a layer selected with the arrow tool, then everything on the canvas moves together. You can rotate and zoom the canvas and everything stays together. If you selected the tracing layer and tapped the arrow in the upper left, then that layer would have a bounding box and you could move it separately. Hope that helps.

      If you plan to use it for art and editing, I would recommend getting the larger screen size. You can save $ by choosing the WiFi model. It just means you have to be connected to WiFi at home (or elsewhere) for internet access. Make sure you choose one with enough storage for how you plan to work. If you want to store everything on your iPad, you may want to upgrade the storage. If you have iCloud storage or can store files on an external hard drive you may not need as much storage. Hope that’s helpful.
