    for anyone doubting about getting this, I have this drone and after 2 days of being stuck in a tree with rain and wind, all functions were fine. this quad copter is amazingly durable.

      +ChewyProductions#2 Yep it got stuck on a tree that was hanging over a small creek so a ladder does not help. I tried a football but only to discover that I am not Aaron Rodgers and got it stuck in the tree too. I tried throwing a baseball up there but that did not work so well because I missed the first through and it bounced back into the creek which was ice but had a small hole in it. I no longer have a baseball. So I got mad and um ya, that happened.

    I always enjoy your reviews. When I'm interested in a quad, I look it up in youtube and when you have a review in that particular quad, I click on your review first. Thanks! Fry's electronics has this UDI 818A quad for $39 and will be getting it thanks to your review.

    I am a beginner with quadcopters and have witnessed the durability of the UDI 818A. I smack, bang and thud and it doesn't have a scratch on it yet. I got 3 Nanotech 950mah Lipos which make it fly much longet even with the video rolling.

    Great video and very helpful! My first flight was right after this video and I was amazed at how well it went. I have the newer version 818A HD+. I haven't used the newly added homeless feature but I did find out quickly that in wind you need high reaction speed (mode 2 on mine).
    Thanks for taking the time to do this!

    I've had this quadcopter for about a year, and this baby is great, flies exceptionally well if you remove the protective plastic, although a couple rough crashes will bust the arms, that being said, replacement arms cost 7.00 and arrived in 2 days. It also spent 3 weeks stuck in a tree during the month of December in the northeast, falling out on Christmas morning... I still fly it everyday lol. worth EVERY penny :-)
    PS your reviews are very well made and informative, I recently purchased the syma x8w and love that as well. thanks man!

    I picked up a couple of these, with the 720p camera but no wifi, at Christmas for a little fun at the park. We crashed them into each other and into trees etc. and they just kept on flying. Absolutely great for anyone to fly because they're so tough and flexible.

    I have one of these too. It was my first quadcopter. :D It has survived a lot of crashes in to trees, bushes, the ground, my car, the side of the house, the roof, the garage door...etc. :D Still fun to fly and is great to learn on.

  • @Tinstar2
    @Tinstar2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Glad you reviewed this little quadcopter. I have this one and the Syma X5C-1 that I am learning on. Both are great learner quadcopters. What I really like about this one is the warning that I get before the quad shuts down. Didn't notice that in yours, but mine will start flashing the lights, and in a few seconds there is a warning beep that comes through the controller and I have around 25 to 30 seconds to land. I wish that all quads had that feature. The Syma just drops out of the sky with little to no warning. Anyway, I would recommend both highly as tough little fliers and great for the beginner! Love your videos.

    I have one of these and without the plastic frame, it is my smoothest flyer. The controller gives me great distance and the camera isn't bad for a built in one. I used a plastic yogurt cup as a replacement for the huge, wind prone, stock canopy. Probably the easiest quad for a beginner to learn on, if you remove the plastic frame. Highly recommended. If you don't want to wait for a shipment from China, the Fry's electronic stores have these in stock.

  • @LandonAaronp
    @LandonAaronp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just got one of these for Xmas. Wasn't expecting much, assuming it was a Chinese knock off or something of the sort, but I was blown away after my first flight. Very intuitive controls, and just like in the video at least 100 yard range. Video quality is excellent, but the photo's are a little grainy. Really nice that it comes with 2 batteries, a battery bank (for charging when away from an outlet), a dual charger that can charge 2 batteries simultaneously, a 4GB Micro SD Card, an SD Card/USB adapter, so you can access the SD card from any computer with a USB port, a micro usb cable for charging the battery bank, 4 replacement gears, and 8 replacement rotor blades. Only thing it doesn't come with is the wall outlet USB adapter deal that the battery charger needs to plug into, so you are going to have to use the one for your cell phone or just charge off a computer's USB port, but I bet that would be really slow.
    What's also really cool is the advanced features it has. It has headless mode that will keep track of orientation changes and automatically adjust the user controls so that pushing forward always makes the drone fly away from you, and backward toward you, regardless of which direction the drone is actually facing. Good for beginners who have trouble controlling the drone in different orientations. Also it has a return to home feature, where it will fly back towards the remote's location. It won't land or anything but useful if you get too far away to tell which way its facing and need to reel it back in.
    One final thing I found hand was that it can recover from a mid air tumble 100% of the time. If I get mine up too high or it starts heading towards a dangerous area like the forest or a body of water I just kill the throttle completely and let it fall to the earth (usually upside down) and when it gets about 10 to 20 meters from the ground I hit the throttle and it will immediately flip back right side up and start to hover. However when it falls the air catches the propellers causing them to spin and it makes the drone kind of slowly glide down toward the ground instead of straight falling, so if there is heavy wind it could still move quite a ways laterally during the fall.
    The only thing I am not so crazy about is those hoops around the rotor blades, I live near a lot of trees and if I crash into one the drone is going to get stuck in the tree because of those round hoops, where it may otherwise just fall through the limbs to the ground. I am more worried about getting stuck in a tree than I am of damaging one of the rotor blades I have 8 replacements for, lol.

    Great review of a great little unit. The UDI 818 should be called the gateway drug of q-copters. My wife gave me one for Xmas: now I'm looking at building a Flame Wheel variation. Thanks for putting this review together...btw, fwiw the 40m range is a bunch of hooey, I've maintained control at well over 150m.

    A bit late with my comment as this video just popped up in my files today? Like others - this was my first quad for a Xmas present a few years back. To this day still flies great and is simple & reliable as compared to some of the junk out now. It does have a bit harder time with winds as it is very light weight. Good pics & videos. All around fun and reliable starter quad.

    I just bought this cheap online for like $34 recently. I will say it is tough. dropped out of the sky 30 plus feet and still worked ok. just trim it out and take off. girlfriend cartwheeled it into ground and no problem. take off again. I have never had a drone before but this thing was a good learner.

    I have the WiFi model of this drone, and later on upgraded to the Phantom 4. While the P4 is undoubtedly a far better tool, I have to say that the A818A is _much_ more fun to fly. I imagine it must be like the difference between flying a gyrocopter vs flying a 747. My only gripe is that I wish battery life was longer. Overall it's an excellent practice flyer.

    I have this quad. It is very well protected. I have flown mine into brick walls, ceilings, desk, etc. no damage yet. Very durable however; the frame is hollow underneath so it is like a sail in medium low winds. It doesn't perform well on windy days at all. Nice little drone for learning though. Just basic, no GPS, but it does have a headless mode if you want to cheat.

    Recently bought it for about 19$ MSRP on a sale, used 5$ toy store credit I got from choosing normal shipping once on a prime account. So, basically paid 15$ for this.
    Crashed it from a height of about 70 meters the other day. It fell on a concrete roof upside down. was easily able to locate it using the signal strength on the remote and flew it back home. One thing I really dislike about this is the way the signal strength is shown on the remote. It doesn't reduce the no of points beside the tower, just simply starts blinking like 5 meters before it goes out of range. Which is pretty frustrating and what's worse is that when I loose signal even momentarily, the video stops recording. Is it possible to improve it's range by bringing the receiver antenna inside the drone outside by using any metal extension?

    I purchased one of these from Walmart. Very expensive for what you get but if you remove the outer cover which includes all the prop guards and the center part with the logo (it's all one piece and comes off by pulling it off the 4 legs the motors are mounted on) it turns into a very quick flyer. Still you can get a bugs 3 for about 30 dollars more which will run double circles around this when flying. This is a lower end model for a beginner drone.

    I want to use this drone to inspect my rain gutters. Can it be angled to do so? Looks like it only films straight out and my guess is the camera can't change angles during flight but can can the camera be angled downward pre-flight?

      @Quadcopter101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it can not. But the following can. The following has a much better camera also th-cam.com/video/S1ELTZfT0XE/w-d-xo.html

      Quadcopter, thank you for the response. The Visuo XS809HW does look more appropriate for my purpose. Do you know if the Visuo you mentioned has a better camera than the updated version of the UDI U818A, the UD U818A-1

    for someone planning to get a pro drone, will this beginners drone help me not crash the next pro drone ? I mean is controlling them similar ?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +abdumka Yes, it is a very good idea to learn the basics of flight with a toy drone first. It will save you money and frustration. Let a cheap beginner's quadcopter take the inevitable crashes and bangs of a beginner flier. Later as your flying skills improve and you're not crashing as much, then consider something better/more expensive.

    • @abdumka
      @abdumka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Quadcopter 101 thanks, What do you advise for a second step after this drone, phantom ? its early to say but I like to know

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      abdumka No, I recommend an intermediate step with a larger intermediate drone to get a better feel for flying larger quadcopters. Any of the following can carry an action camera. But they are not suitable for beginners as "learn to fly" drones because of their larger size and weight. As they are bigger/heavier, they may break more easily in a crash or hurt someone or damage property. Yet they are still inexpensive and won't hurt your pocketbook too much if they are damaged or lost. Consider these only after you learn how to fly well first with your beginner drone.
