If you've ever lost your drone or almost lost your drone you know how nerve wracking that can be. Apple AirTags promise the ability to track and find lost items... so why not use it to find a lost drone?
In this video we attach an AirTag to a DJI Mavic Mini 2 and see if we can lose it!

Yes even if you fly in a remote place where you are the only one, as long as you walk nearby your phone might be able to find it, like if it’s stuck in a tree, you can make the airtag beep and maybe find it better!

    • @nicolaswalsh

Or even better you could attach an iPhone to a drone and just fly over the forest slowly and use the iPhone as radar aircraft search and rescue mission!

  • @devanshaggarwal2632

you can use this as a 2 step process
first get a GPS based location of the drone on the phone app
second when you are nearby to that location hit the airtag
it will give the most precise location and sound

When a DJI drone goes down in thick bush on a steep hillside with a flat battery, the DJI "find my drone" feature will lead you to the approximate location, but an independently powered location finder with a beeper, will make all the difference for zooming in on the actual crash location, which could be inside a thick gorse bush, or hidden by foliage, 30 feet up a tree.

When you crash your drone you likely know approximately where it is. But where exactly it is could be a pain to find out. Especially if you’re in some woods.
Last time my drone crashes the battery also flew out, so no signal of it. With an AirTag it will be much easier to find, even with only your own iPhone signal.

Would the airtag work as a way to track your motorcycle if it got stolen or maybe find your car in a parking lot after a ball game at a stadium or something? It seems in a drone situation If you have a general visual where the drone might be then you might could hunt around and find it.

    • @impatrickt

I wouldn't rely on it. especially in a situation like a parking lot.

Surprised how poor the Airtag works. There are much better tracking devices for drones like Loc8tor and Marco Polo. Bluetooth devices like Airtag rely on a phone being very close to the device and drones tend to go places where there are no phones within a few meters. But in a city environment in this test I would have expected more phones around.

lost mode won't make a difference other than it making a noise when someone finds it and it indicates to the person that pings it that it's lost.
it has to be within 30-40 yards of an active FindMy device with a connection. she just wasn't near anybody. it's the biggest caveat to any cloud networked tracker. you dont need 14.5 either. anything that has the FindMy app support will work.

Of little value in wilderness and conservation areas unless you already know with in 10-20m the location as the BT range is not brilliant, besides wildlife don't have iPhones. In an urban area there would be some use, however if it lands on a high roof out of range of BT or someone comes across it before you and frizbees the AirTag into a passing truck. Your DJI will display on the screen map where your drone is in relation to you.

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If it lands in the woods - you can use the last known position from the DJI app and just use the proximity to find it. If you know the general area within a radius you will be fine to ping it.
