As always, nice review Q101. One very important correction. Low quad battery does NOT trigger automatic RTH . Only loss of transmitter signal by the quad will trigger the failsafe automatic RTH. Headless mode reference heading for headless mode is not the heading the quad was pointing takeoff. It is the direction the quad was pointing when it enters headless mode and is updated each time you reenter headless mode. So if you exit headless mode and reenter headless mode, the reference heading will change. This makes headless mode practically useless for manually piloted return to home. Good thing it has autopilot RTH and GPS!

This shoots better video than the Bebop 2, much better colors, brightness and sharper video. Bebop 2 has it beat in steady video, flying features (points of interest, waypoints, etc). And IF you get the Skycontroller, you can fly a helluva lot further (up to 1.3 miles). Also there is an app you can use that has follow me mode. Their own app, Free flight 3 doesn't have that. That being said, the Hubsan H501S is a helluva value for what it can do. Makes me second guess my Bebop 2 purchase, but once I got the Skycontroller for my Bebop 2, it became a beast (as far as distance). IF it had a better camera, the Bebop 2 would be up there with DJI & Yuneec. This Hubsan H501S is quite tempting.
+scott rand i got 1.1miles with the h501s,antenna mod and prob could have gone further but battery meter is what stopped me.its not reliable,you got to keep an eye on voltage.

Pretty neat copter ... hefty price goes along with all those features. Like most everything about it except its built in FPV screen, which would be mostly useless in any kind of sunlight. Couldn't see anything in your video that you were describing on the screen, so we'll take your word for it. Had to go to the site to check its features, as when you first started describing it, you said it had brushless motors, then later in the video you said it had brushed motors, so I wasn't sure which it had .. and it is brushless as noted in your "show more notes". I'm sure Hubsan will be asking for your other arm or leg for the matching goggles so that you can actually see something. Then, there's the question about its range, both for the quad and the FPV signal. I see it listed as 300m, but, that could just be advertising. Would like to see you do a real time test of that range .. you could use Google maps to draw a line between take off point and where you lose either control signal or FPV signal and get an accurate distance. This one kind of 'breaks the mold', as it doesn't fit any real category: it's not a camera bird; its not a FPV racer. I guess it's ... ah ... innovative .. yeah, we'll go with that ... innovative! Good review ... I hope you kept your promise to doggie and let her out for a 'walk'. Cheers!
+Yazgersfarm Bring up the area to measure in Google Maps. Zoom in if necessary. Right click on the starting point, and from the drop down menu, select "measure distance". The next place you point to and left click on, will be the end point, and a line will be drawn between start-stop, and the distance will be shown. You can also do this with Google Earth.
👍👍WOW what a blast from the past! This video is one reason I bought the H501S way back in early 2017, my first GPS drone with RTH, and loved it. I flew it for at least a year and literally wore it out. In fact, it and all the accessories are still in a box, including a brand new unused body shell. I only stopped flying it after it began ignoring my controller commands and began flying uncontrollably and crashed a couple of times. Of course, by then I had tried all manner of TH-camr firmware updates, etc. I then moved on to the Mavic Mini and currently the excellent Mini 4 Pro. Still I miss the days when we could modify our drones and even purchase el cheapo 3rd party batteries. Yep, those heady days of cheap drones without all the suppressive drone regulations were what I consider the golden days of drone flying. Anyway, I didn't know your channel was still active until getting a TH-cam video recommendation a little while ago. As always, regards from Thailand!😁
Great review. These have proven to be 'Dad friendly', he brought one as his first drone that he can fly without crashing and now takes it everywhere with him. The return home is very useful if you lose track and need a get out of jail free card.

I have this drone from about 3 year's... It is very good fast and have nice quality... The only problem is the video stability, photos quality is very good!!
Thanos Thanos I am actually planning on buying this drone. One problem I do have is that, is the screen bright enough to see in strong sunlight? I really wanna buy this drone but I wanna know everything so I can set expectations? Also, after how long does the battery need to be replaced? Or does it long quite a while without swelling or dropping charge level? Im sorry if this is too many but I have one more question. Does the remote control require a lot of batteries due to the screen?

Ive just bought one and awaiting delivery. It will be my first ever drone. Hope I can fly it okay. I have flown very cheap nasty quads prior, but hoping GPS will help a lot more. Reason for buying is that I want to view my roof on the house as the wind has damaged it a bit.
well I finally ordered this quad and it has dramatically improved my flying. yes I am even banking at full throttle in every direction now. I wanted something with GPS that I could grab and toss it up in my back yard during TV commercials if ya know what I mean? My big Hubsan 109s High Edition and my Phantom 3 takes to much prep for those kinds of short flights. I really love the h501s and it flies freakin awesome. the only criticism I have is that in altitude hold it tends to Bob up and down for awhile before it finally settles down. the GPS hold mode is really good. Now I just gotta find a little case for it. I've seen them on banggood but shipping takes forever when I order from them. I've seen one or two cases on Amazon but they cost way too much 50-60 bucks. screw that. ha.

You could, but goggles are not needed. You can view the live video stream on the screen of the transmitter. It's just a bit hard to see the screen in sunlight.
Excellent speaking voice. I think you demonstrated more features and was easy to understand everything you were saying. I like how you said what you were going to do and then demonstrated what you would do if you were flying the drone and what you were going to accomplish by following those steps. You should be doing reviews and demonstrations for all drones!
Take it outside, bind it to the transmitter, do the calibration dance, and wait up to 15 minutes to see if it can find the satellites at all. If it never changes from NA or 0, then obviously something is wrong with its GPS. Make a short unlisted TH-cam video "clearly" showing the problem, then contact your vendor's customer service with this link to see if they'll resolve. If they don't help, then file a dispute with your credit card company or PayPal for receipt of a defective product. Include the video link with your dispute.
+Kenny Thomas I know. That's something to be aware of. FPV screens are very difficult to see in sunlight. Most people purchase optional FPV goggles to enable viewing in sunlight.

I have to say, your review was far more helpful and in learning how to use this thing. mine recently arrived, and feel the instructional manual not helpful at all... direct german translated into english without any changes in sentence structure. this is a cool drone... will update on how my first flight is.
I noticed (and you raised it after you realized it was too low) it didn't climb to a "safe" elevation when you hit the RTH button. Im surprised that it didnt. I know the 501C does.

I've been pleased with the H501S. Both the drone and controller seem to be well made. Unfortunately I've only been able to fly it in my backyard and won't have a better opportunity until the weather warms up. Oh to have the expanse of the desert to fly in. Thanks for the great review.
FYI: You can choose to turn off the lights and camera for longer flight time. LIGHTS: they flash in default setting.... press and hold the left down arrow button and they will stay lit.... press and hold button again and they will turn off.... press and hold again to go back to flashing. CAMERA: enter MAIN MENU by pulling down and hold left stick and press and hold right stick. Select "Frequency", then select "OFF".
I'm really glad you reviewed this quad. I just ordered it a few weeks ago. Did you know you can go into parameters and change things like have it face forward when going home. There is an update for it but, people have been have issues like toilet bowling and not holding altitude. And you were able to have the lights stay on solid with this update. I don't know if they fixed all the issues in the update or is it even a Hubsan update. So, update at your own risk if you want steady lights. I'll wait! Thanks for the awesome video! I can't wait to get mine.
Still Flying in 2024 with no issues , no firware update needed or required . Like a. Old Flybar Helicopter , they are antiquaded , do the job & are fun to Fly . Great deals on BG now for about a 100 for a reliable Flyer . Maybe the 1st low budget Quad with Follow you capabilities.
Agreed. I liked it. The only thing that I didn't like was that the viewing screen on the transmitter could be a real battery hog. It was very important to use good quality rechargeable AA's with it.
Made my choice and got the 501S as I already have the Spyhawk camera plane and I have been pleased with that. I ordered the back pack shell case at the same time which was a great buy and now I have had the unit a few weeks now I can only find one thing against it - the Tx eats batteries. I have now changed and use rechargeable NiHi batteries (4 X 2700mA) but still they only last a few flights at best. Why Hubsan stick with the alkerline batteries I will never know as my Spyhawk plane was the same - I can only think they have shares in Duracel. I intend to change the Tx to a 2S LiPo with a voltage regulator which should be better. Other than that well pleased with the 501S as its a well made bit of kit and does what it says it will do straight out of the box. Always enjoy your reviews but this time I got the one I wanted before your review came out. Regards Peter

Hi Sir I own own of these 501s. Yesterday it dropped with no apparent reason to the ground. I was flaying regularly, and it did not react to my requests to gain altitude, and suddenly drop down. Looked in Cons you said it might, I will try to send the link to the movie later, I'm interested to see what you think the reason is.
On Amazon, this is 205. I keep going back and forth with this and the Bugs 2W. I've read the charger has issues with the Bugs so I keep leaning to this. Mostly looking for one to just fly around the park
You are a bit ill informed they are upgrades available for that drone and controller and you can record from the remote. You can get the updates to the firmware on hubsans website. The upgrades allow you to turn off and on leds etc.
Good review. This is almost right where I want a quadcopter to be for fun and portable with higher end features. Also, price is not too bad. That said, I wish the video was more stable. You almost broke into some Beatles there, "on its way home..."
The screen on the transmitter seems to be a glossy one. Not the best one for outdoor flying. I've a H107D for a while. The screen has a mat finish and it's already difficult to see in bright environment. Interesting by the way. I'll check this one for a price drop even if it's already a good one. Hi Quad 101 -- i have been flying the H501 for last several weeks -- there are firmware upgrades (hubsanUS site) for both the quad and transmitter -- with important updates including the ability to leave lights on vs blinking -- BTW Hubsan customer support is very good!! -- overall a great Quad and there is a great case and visor for controller monitor available -- thx for your vids!

+Quadcopter 101 You point on "if aint broken don't fix it" is a good one -- there was an update that created problems with GPS -- giving a "toilet bowl" effect as RC Flyer and others have called it -- Hubsan support sent me a pre-release of firmware that got things much better and i find it super stable not seeing the altitude drops you experienced early on - specially with windy conditions. One area that needs to be addressed is that the transmitter eats batteries fast -- i use rechargeable and that helps a bit. thx for great videos - i was happy to see you with this Quad!

Love this video and I have ordered the advanced version of H501s copter. In many places people recommend to use a 3s rechargabel lipo battery in the controller instead of the 8 AAA batteries. (the advanced version has a built in JST connector, so no need to mod the controller itself.) But the 3s lipo is 12V while the battery of the copter is a 2s lipo (7.4V) My question: can I use the charger shipped with the copter to charge the 3s lipo, or do I need to purchase a separate charger for the 3s? Thanks.

Just bought one of these after returning a cheaper drone, which didn't fly well at all. Hopefully I will not be disappointed with this one. Just under £150 for the drone with standard controller and an antenna upgrade kit.
I see that the transmitter only uses AA batteries how long do I need to buy or recharge my AA batteries. Also your time stamp is 20mins of flight time that is cool, any way to have it longer with 3rd party batteries.
I have had this drone for about 2 months and 8 flights now. For the price and the features, it is awesome. That said, the battery life is shorter than the 20+ minutes advertised. Maybe filming all the time, a slight wind + the fun factor seemed to diminish this time. felt more like 12min. One big improvement would be: (Are you listening Hubsan?) Having telemetry is GREAT, however, if you cannot read it, it is useless. I CANNOT READ THE HEIGHT! FAA regulations and all... Like to make sure I am in compliance. HOW ABOUT putting an opaque black box behind the data so as to be able to read in bright conditions. You know, the conditions we are required to fly by law. A surrounding black box would accommodate this dilemma.
There is a jst connector inside battery box,you can use battery from H 502e or s drone push it into battery box,then to left,then plug it in,it will last a lot longer regular batteries
i lost my syma x5c. took out for night flight. took up high ish. signal went snd drone flew off. gutted. 501s ordered and on it's way. return to home definitely needed.

Ive just bought one and awaiting delivery. It will be my first ever drone. Hope I can fly it okay. I have flown very cheap nasty quads prior, but hoping GPS will help a lot more. Reason for buying is that I want to view my roof on the house as the wind has damaged it a bit.

well I finally ordered this quad and it has dramatically improved my flying. yes I am even banking at full throttle in every direction now. I wanted something with GPS that I could grab and toss it up in my back yard during TV commercials if ya know what I mean? My big Hubsan 109s High Edition and my Phantom 3 takes to much prep for those kinds of short flights. I really love the h501s and it flies freakin awesome. the only criticism I have is that in altitude hold it tends to Bob up and down for awhile before it finally settles down. the GPS hold mode is really good. Now I just gotta find a little case for it. I've seen them on banggood but shipping takes forever when I order from them. I've seen one or two cases on Amazon but they cost way too much 50-60 bucks. screw that. ha.

You could, but goggles are not needed. You can view the live video stream on the screen of the transmitter. It's just a bit hard to see the screen in sunlight.

Excellent speaking voice. I think you demonstrated more features and was easy to understand everything you were saying. I like how you said what you were going to do and then demonstrated what you would do if you were flying the drone and what you were going to accomplish by following those steps. You should be doing reviews and demonstrations for all drones!

Hello, thank you for your answer! My TX does have 12 sats, but the X4GPS keeps saying "NA" or "0".
Take it outside, bind it to the transmitter, do the calibration dance, and wait up to 15 minutes to see if it can find the satellites at all. If it never changes from NA or 0, then obviously something is wrong with its GPS. Make a short unlisted TH-cam video "clearly" showing the problem, then contact your vendor's customer service with this link to see if they'll resolve. If they don't help, then file a dispute with your credit card company or PayPal for receipt of a defective product. Include the video link with your dispute.
When you do take it outside, make sure that you're in an open area with a clear view of the sky (no trees or buildings blocking the sky view).

+Kenny Thomas I know. That's something to be aware of. FPV screens are very difficult to see in sunlight. Most people purchase optional FPV goggles to enable viewing in sunlight.

I have to say, your review was far more helpful and in learning how to use this thing. mine recently arrived, and feel the instructional manual not helpful at all... direct german translated into english without any changes in sentence structure. this is a cool drone... will update on how my first flight is.

I noticed (and you raised it after you realized it was too low) it didn't climb to a "safe" elevation when you hit the RTH button. Im surprised that it didnt. I know the 501C does.

I've been pleased with the H501S. Both the drone and controller seem to be well made. Unfortunately I've only been able to fly it in my backyard and won't have a better opportunity until the weather warms up. Oh to have the expanse of the desert to fly in. Thanks for the great review.
FYI: You can choose to turn off the lights and camera for longer flight time. LIGHTS: they flash in default setting.... press and hold the left down arrow button and they will stay lit.... press and hold button again and they will turn off.... press and hold again to go back to flashing. CAMERA: enter MAIN MENU by pulling down and hold left stick and press and hold right stick. Select "Frequency", then select "OFF".

I'm really glad you reviewed this quad. I just ordered it a few weeks ago. Did you know you can go into parameters and change things like have it face forward when going home. There is an update for it but, people have been have issues like toilet bowling and not holding altitude. And you were able to have the lights stay on solid with this update. I don't know if they fixed all the issues in the update or is it even a Hubsan update. So, update at your own risk if you want steady lights. I'll wait! Thanks for the awesome video! I can't wait to get mine.

Still Flying in 2024 with no issues , no firware update needed or required . Like a. Old Flybar Helicopter , they are antiquaded , do the job & are fun to Fly . Great deals on BG now for about a 100 for a reliable Flyer . Maybe the 1st low budget Quad with Follow you capabilities.
Agreed. I liked it. The only thing that I didn't like was that the viewing screen on the transmitter could be a real battery hog. It was very important to use good quality rechargeable AA's with it.
Made my choice and got the 501S as I already have the Spyhawk camera plane and I have been pleased with that. I ordered the back pack shell case at the same time which was a great buy and now I have had the unit a few weeks now I can only find one thing against it - the Tx eats batteries. I have now changed and use rechargeable NiHi batteries (4 X 2700mA) but still they only last a few flights at best. Why Hubsan stick with the alkerline batteries I will never know as my Spyhawk plane was the same - I can only think they have shares in Duracel.
I intend to change the Tx to a 2S LiPo with a voltage regulator which should be better.
Other than that well pleased with the 501S as its a well made bit of kit and does what it says it will do straight out of the box. Always enjoy your reviews but this time I got the one I wanted before your review came out. Regards Peter

Yesterday it dropped with no apparent reason to the ground.
I was flaying regularly, and it did not react to my requests to gain altitude, and suddenly drop down.
Looked in Cons you said it might, I will try to send the link to the movie later, I'm interested to see what you think the reason is.

On Amazon, this is 205. I keep going back and forth with this and the Bugs 2W. I've read the charger has issues with the Bugs so I keep leaning to this. Mostly looking for one to just fly around the park

You are a bit ill informed they are upgrades available for that drone and controller and you can record from the remote. You can get the updates to the firmware on hubsans website. The upgrades allow you to turn off and on leds etc.

Good review. This is almost right where I want a quadcopter to be for fun and portable with higher end features. Also, price is not too bad. That said, I wish the video was more stable. You almost broke into some Beatles there, "on its way home..."
The screen on the transmitter seems to be a glossy one. Not the best one for outdoor flying. I've a H107D for a while. The screen has a mat finish and it's already difficult to see in bright environment.
Interesting by the way. I'll check this one for a price drop even if it's already a good one.

Hi Quad 101 -- i have been flying the H501 for last several weeks -- there are firmware upgrades (hubsanUS site) for both the quad and transmitter -- with important updates including the ability to leave lights on vs blinking -- BTW Hubsan customer support is very good!! -- overall a great Quad and there is a great case and visor for controller monitor available -- thx for your vids!

+Quadcopter 101 You point on "if aint broken don't fix it" is a good one -- there was an update that created problems with GPS -- giving a "toilet bowl" effect as RC Flyer and others have called it -- Hubsan support sent me a pre-release of firmware that got things much better and i find it super stable not seeing the altitude drops you experienced early on - specially with windy conditions. One area that needs to be addressed is that the transmitter eats batteries fast -- i use rechargeable and that helps a bit. thx for great videos - i was happy to see you with this Quad!
Quadcopter 101 hello, thanks for your videos, they helped me decide on which quadcopter to go with(Hubsan H501s) I have a question, if I have 2 of the H501s's with the basic tx, can I bind either tx to either quadcopter? Thanks.
Love this video and I have ordered the advanced version of H501s copter. In many places people recommend to use a 3s rechargabel lipo battery in the controller instead of the 8 AAA batteries. (the advanced version has a built in JST connector, so no need to mod the controller itself.) But the 3s lipo is 12V while the battery of the copter is a 2s lipo (7.4V) My question: can I use the charger shipped with the copter to charge the 3s lipo, or do I need to purchase a separate charger for the 3s? Thanks.

Just bought one of these after returning a cheaper drone, which didn't fly well at all. Hopefully I will not be disappointed with this one. Just under £150 for the drone with standard controller and an antenna upgrade kit.
I see that the transmitter only uses AA batteries how long do I need to buy or recharge my AA batteries. Also your time stamp is 20mins of flight time that is cool, any way to have it longer with 3rd party batteries.

I have had this drone for about 2 months and 8 flights now. For the price and the features, it is awesome. That said, the battery life is shorter than the 20+ minutes advertised. Maybe filming all the time, a slight wind + the fun factor seemed to diminish this time. felt more like 12min. One big improvement would be: (Are you listening Hubsan?) Having telemetry is GREAT, however, if you cannot read it, it is useless. I CANNOT READ THE HEIGHT! FAA regulations and all... Like to make sure I am in compliance. HOW ABOUT putting an opaque black box behind the data so as to be able to read in bright conditions. You know, the conditions we are required to fly by law. A surrounding black box would accommodate this dilemma.
There is a jst connector inside battery box,you can use battery from H 502e or s drone push it into battery box,then to left,then plug it in,it will last a lot longer regular batteries
Instead of a nearby X, why not make evenly spaced concentric circles around the take-off position, so see how close to bullseye the landing is?
