    PLEASE do not stop making videos!!! i see you have slowed down a lot... and I'm sure that you have something like a life going on, so I don't mean to blindly accost you with guilt about it, but this is the first video of yours that I'm watching and I just love the way you talk about the notes and accords... I can tell you have done a lot of hands-on work with these scents and it's just wonderful the way that you share and express that. I am really infatuated with perfumery, and the way that it mimics music how you build a melody; marry that with the fact that smell is the sense that is the most connected to memory? Please, this is a psychology-art. Don't leave us!!! I'm marching on to watch as much of your videos as I can digest!!!! Thank you so much!!

    Amber does have a smell. Fossilized amber has a variety of hardness😮😮, but if heated you can smell it and that is also how you can authenticate amber jewelry. Amber resin, carved handles for utensils

      Thanks man. Just don't take everything I say too seriously. My approach and thought process can be different from others. Every Perfumer is different and has different approaches to things. There is no right or wrong way....it's almost like an art. The end result and making people happy with the scent is what matters. How you get it to that point is entirely up to you.

    Materials I would add to this list as Basics for Men's Cologne Materials: Veramoss (synthetic Oakmoss), Cashmeran (synthetic musk highly used in men's colognes), Aldemone/Precyclemone B, Helional, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone (sometimes called "Gamma Ionone Couer"), Magnolan, Geranium EO, Pink Pepper EO (or CO2 extract), Ginger CO2 extract.
    Some "Step-up" Men's Cologne Materials: Sylvamber (similar to Iso E Super, but higher isomer concentration), Hedione HC (High cis, has higher amount of cis isomer), Vetrofix/Cedryl Methyl Ketone, Kephalis, Myrac Aldehyde, Citral, Nerol, Allyl Amyl Glycolate, Farnesol, Birch Tar (rectified) and AmberXtreme.

    I just bought a number of these materials and some random ones I wanted to try. So excited to start blending things together. This was a really useful guide, but it was difficult to pare it down without any real reference point. I ended up getting a couple from each category, then subbing out some of the more expensive stuff... Like tobacco absolute is pretty pricey, so I got hay absolute instead because I always thought a Nicaraguan cigar had a musty hay smell to it. I'd like to see what you'd buy for under 300 dollars material cost, like ultra beginner stuff.

    • @bkscents7050
      @bkscents7050  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I have hay absolute...and to me it doesnt really smell much like tobacco absolute. it has its purpose...but if you want tobacco alternatives, check out TOBACOROL which smells like a cedar chest that held cigars in them.....or TABANONE which has a spicy tobacco twist

    Can’t thank you enough I already have so many things that I bough since perhaps two years ago, and until I learned the dilitoution lesson two or three days ago from this channel I was would never know why most of my creations smell the same. It’s because of these very strong notes that no matter how little I try to put they would still overwhelm or stay present. In fact I now see that investing in a good scale right away is a must I always counted drops This very lesson ( this video ) is super informative you made me see that I can one day create something to be proud of.
    I can get some essential oils from the Middle East and North Africa for much less that the prices you mentioned here but I’ll see a way to try and buy me a full kit of your recommenced hand picked choices because I been watching you for a few days now. And I can tell that you put a big effort into choosing these particular ones. So I’ll be taking a Great Leap Forward if only I can get me this whole big kit of today’s lesson
    I was just thinking why not store every thing in a dedicated fridge just so I keep my bottles with pipette I just order them yesterday as soon as I realized I must dilute but I’ll be a good student and follow your instructions to the T

    I just found this video and I'm glad I did. So much information! I'll need to watch it several times. Question: once I've created my fragrance, can I then use it in a formulation for a lotion, body scrub, or body mist? If so, what percentage would be best? Thank you!

    • @bkscents7050
      @bkscents7050  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a tough one. A formula usually is made specifically for the end product type. Youll find that a formula you made intended for a alcoholic perfume spray may not work so well in a lotion or soap. While you can use the same materials, but youll have to tweak it (the formula) for the intent of the final product. Some materials behave differently in their final end product.

    Firstly, thanks so much for the useful info! Your content makes many people happy.
    Very interesting for me would be to know a bit about the toxicity of these raw materials while sniffing them nonstop. Say I start experimenting, with no previous knowledge about chemistry or perfumes, and I rely simply on my nose and creativity. So this is a lot of hours of smelling per day for many days, weeks or months. What are the health risks? Thank you very much!

    Man, thanks so much for putting this together. I saw that you have newer videos on the same topic, but I just wanted to mention that this answered a lot of the questions many videos on other channels just plain didn't.
    I'm building a brand, and once that brand is significantly large I'm going to use that as a platform to launch subsidiary brands like a fragrance one, so this has been really helpful with considering different levels of preparation that'll go into being ready for that once it's time for a launch.

    It's lovely of you to share your experience and beginner's resources. But I cannot help l laughing as we forget we are scientists too and that we have lab equipment implements to help get the syrup, resin, slugs out of the bottles and they are called Spatula and weight boats (little trays and shallow dishes that hold the materials) and we combine them with the scientific scale firstly doing the calibration and the weight of each boat, spatula and bottle without the merch. inside it.🌷
    🙋(Raising my hand to speak) 🗣Advanced Chemistry, Chemistry Technician, Cosmetic Chemists and Perfumer's Apprentices should benefit by training from scratch first, train the nose, and use ingredients which are not yet synthetic if at all possible.🌹 Making your own is a skill that cannot be lost. 🌹 You will be reading as many books as you possibly can and attending formal classes when possible to get a full understanding of the art as there are so many facets.⚠📛✔❌♻⚗🌲🌹🌾🐋🐳🐿🦌💥🕯🥼⚗🧪🧑‍🔬👩‍🔬
    🔥🧯📈📝🛒⚧ There is a lot to understand and learn so that you don't overload and burn out on your dream. Then we get into budgets and choosing bottle and labeling them when you do have a perfume made and it's got papers.

    @BK Scents do you sell beginner recipes? It would be great if you had starter recipes that are going to make a good base perfume that can then be tweaked and played round with. So like a spicy blend, leather blend, musky blend etc

    Thanks for sharing. Although I’m not actively pursuing it, this hobby really interests me. I have a question though, I thought ambergris is a whale product? Whale puke to put it indelicately. Can some one shed some light?

    I love your video, thank you so much! You are wrong with the amber. It's the sap of a tree, liquidambar orientalis, the insects fell there and were conserved in it. I have real amber resin it smells great.
    Allspice is a sweet pepper, Jamaican pepper or pimenta dioica. Not a mix of spices.
    If you did this video now would you change anything?

    Hello from France! I subscribed to your channel which is a real gold mine. Thank you for all your precious advice! I'm heading towards making scented candles. Would you have any recommendations on what solvent to use in my perfumes to incorporate into my candles? Thank you very much for your attention! Delphine

      Sorry, but I don’t make candles so I wouldn’t know which is the correct dilutant to use in that situation.

    First of all, thank you for all the time and effort you've put into sharing your perfumery wisdom! I blame your videos for getting me hooked on this hobby :) Secondly, where I live in Europe they do not sell "perfumer's alcohol" (SDA 40B), however I can find many different kinds of alcohol through a lab-supply company. Since SDA 40B is denatured using toxic chemicals, wouldn't it be better for the skin to use pure food-grade ethanol? I'm finding very mixed opinions online, so I was curious to find out what your take is on this!

    Great video, good explanation of content. However I would like to let you know that 'Amber' is actually a fossilized resin from extinct trees much like our pine trees today. Amber can indeed be melted with low heat (about 250 c) and when it is melted certain ambers may give off a very pungent odor many find off-putting, due to the acids contained within.

    • @bkscents7050
      @bkscents7050  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutly! I do it all the time. You just have to know which aldehyde combo will be the right suited ones for your fragrance theme. Even just trace amounts of aldehydes work well too!

    Yo ! You just cost me a lot of money, Buster. Thanks, and it occurred to me that instead of covering a wood table with plastic sheets it's better to use a non-absorbent and scent-free material like Formica. I recently spilled a beaker of Iso E Super on an old varnished table and it ruined the surface. Your videos are a great help for newbies like me.
