That was mesmerizing. He explains everything so concisely without unnecessary chatter. It's this kind of tutorial that make me think I can go out and do this in one shot, fail 10 times, then realize how much skill he has.
I just got a lathe for my birthday . I remember my grandpa working on one and I would sit for hours watching him ty for this video and will be watching more of your videos
At last someone turning a bowl, that knows how to do it right. No dramas. No nonsense. Just a great grip on what he’s doing and proper knowledge of the chisels, and how they are used to achieve the right cuts. Brilliant
I really appreciate the detail you offer in how the tools are presented to the blank and then as they move over it and through the cuts. I’ve looked at several instructionals and they omit a lot of that detail. Thankyou.
It was good to see a narrative that was delivered with clarity and confidence, making the viewing experience more instructive. The lighting and camera angles work well in delivering a Good practical guide to bowl turning.
Always an inspiration to watch the masterly Richard Raffan in action. He has a habit of making wood turning so easy - that is until you have to do it on your own. This is a great starter video to get newcomers going and a great refresher for people who have not turned for a while!
One of the better videos with explanations. I liked the straight to it approach the best! Thanks. Perhaps a tutorial on tools. Shapes, Usage and sharpening sometime. Thanks.
Best basic guide I have seen to date! No fuss no bull shit! And covers very accurately how to do in an easy understandable fashion even for a non-native speaking person. Thank you very much wonder full job! this also goes for part II :)
Great video, really helpful, thanks. You can get the centre of a circle bang on by using a square and the fact that a diameter subtends an angle of 90 degrees at the circumference.
absolutely beautiful and also great teaching! thank you very much. I really learn a lot form your turning vids. As a real noob beginner I'm loving turning. I built my own lathe from an old drill press and love this stuff :)
The way the shavings seem to fly and float is amazing. Someday I'll figure out how to get my blades that sharp. :) Great video, looking forward to part 2!
hey ,if anyone else is searching for lawn bowls sizes old new try Berts Bowls Guide (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my neighbor got cool success with it.
Hey :) I might be to blind for the sharpener but the best sharpening I ever down was by hand using wet sanding paper 1000 grid and that was sharp I mean sharp sharp but loosing it quicker than anything
Watching those shavings fly in which ropes is amazing. i basically only do small projects, almost all pens and bottles tops, so seeing this much material fly is mind boggling. I'm sure part of it is that you are using cherry which I would rarely use because it's on the softer side for pens but still fun to watch.
What a joy to see a master at his craft. A tip to all beginners, follow safe woodturning tips and try FRESH hardwoods like cherry or any fruit wood to get good results quicker. It will take some time (and some great equipment) to become as good as Richard but he demonstrates superbly that with hard work, determination and effort you can achieve great things.
I'm a hemophiliac, so it's very risky for me to try this, but it does seem like very satisfying work. I work on a 3D printer as an alternative, using hemp fibre filament and wood PLA.
Just use the bowl, and maybe wash it up first. Treat it like a wooden chopping board. I finish bowls with walnut or boiled linseed oil that come off when washed, so if a bowl is going straight into use you might not bother with a finish.
Honestly I'll probably never get to give anything like this a go, welding is my trade and I'll be learning a bit of milling/turning in the next year or so but that'll be with metal not wood. Regardless, watching an expert artisan do anything is always incredibly satisfying
An easier way to find the center of a circle is by using Thales' theorem. A right angle at any point on the circumference of a circle will pass through the edge at exactly the center. Do this twice and connect the lines and the intersection should be exactly at the centerpoint of the circle.
Maybe I didn't get it right but why do you need to rest for month to dry? You can turn wood with >15% moisture and just wait for it dry after you turned it?
Wood tends to warp as it dries, so bowls turned from green (unseasoned) wood usually warp. A lot of people don't want that whereas I don't mind. It's common to part-turn bowls, set them aisde for a few months to dry, then true them up. it's all in my book and video Turning Bowls with Richard Raffan.
I'm pretty new to using a lathe and have a few questions. (anyone answering would be helpful) 1. It's hard to tell from the video, but which way is the "end grain" of the wood facing? 2. What many rpm are you using while cutting the bowl? Thanks in advance.
Padraig - you should be able to get the Turning Wood, Turning Bowls, Turning Boxes, Turning Toys and Turning Boxes videos/DVDs online from Amazon, Booktopia, or woodturning supply stores like Craft Supplies USA, or Woodcraft in the USA.
question: could you just bake it, (or microwave it like you did) to dry it completely? so you don't have to wait a while to use the bowl. (coming from an inexperienced guy trying to get into the hobby)
I use a Robert Sorby Pro edge deluxe belt sharpener. Pretty much fool proof. Quite expensive, but worth every penny. You can sharpen your chisels, to factory finish. And it will last a lifetime.
Hi Gents, Can you help me out by telling me what size (hp and width) lathe I need to turn bowls? Also, what are the needed tools? I'm trying to get an idea of the overall start up cost for this hobby. THANKS IN ADVANCE!! JSC
Great video. No foolish and useless movie introductions- Just real and to the point learning!
Thanks!!!

Yep, the great ones always make it look easy.
This guys touch and muscle memory is first class.
Possibly the best verbal instruction (to go along with evident Skills) on the net... Mr. Raffan can not only "Do" he can "Teach"...
I just got a lathe for my birthday . I remember my grandpa working on one and I would sit for hours watching him ty for this video and will be watching more of your videos
Coming from the land of machining ceramics and steel I am amazed at how the process of wood working on a lathe is, looks like I may have a new hobby.

I really loved this film. He sounds like what I call a real person. Just the facts. I could watch this all day.
I really appreciate the detail you offer in how the tools are presented to the blank and then as they move over it and through the cuts. I’ve looked at several instructionals and they omit a lot of that detail. Thankyou.
I've not turned a bowl yet. What a fantastic introduction. Thank you.

Another good show by Richard. Enjoyed having lunch with him at the last demo in California.
Wonderfully descriptive for each cut and that is an element missing on many beginner turning videos. It is appreciated. Thank you.
So very informative, from tool position to sanding grit. RPMs would be the only suggestion. Thanks so much.
I'm new to wood turning and you make everything look so easy. Very cool.
super sharp tools required...i am impressed. well done.

A skilful man and his lathe. Makes it look so easy.
This guy is my favourite. I flinch so much when he works.
Candice is dead
Awesome stuff! I look forward to turning my first bowl...
Has anyone ever mentioned that this chap looks a lot like Donald Pleasence?
Richard is a real craftsman. You can tell he crafts more by intuition vs. more calculated robotic approaches. I love it!

This is great! I just made my first bowl too! These videos are inspiring for my videos and my woodworking.
The First I want start doing this ! How you going with this stuff? Can you make any money doing this? Thanks
im 17 woodworking is my life. thanks for all the tips
Thanks for the steps you show, some great advice and clear instructions, thanks.

Helpful video before I take a bowl turning class. Really good!
Excellent video! Make more, please!
excellent information. as I am just getting started in turning the information presented was done in a very organized manner.
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing this valuable information.
Excellent tutorial

This is so satisfying to watch
Wow, nice to watch a master at work! Impressive.
A great instructional video!
Very Good Teacher! I just started with my new lathe. Now I have something good to watch!
One day I'll get some pro chisels.
Depth drill, great idea especially for me as a novice!

Amazing how after just two cuts started looking like a bowl already. You’re really good at it. One day I hope I can get me a lathe.
I'm a hemophiliac, so it's very risky for me to try this, but it does seem like very satisfying work.
I work on a 3D printer as an alternative, using hemp fibre filament and wood PLA.
It's not that dangerous as it seems
2:50 lol he holds the drill bit with his bare hand. Legend.
So satisfying to shave. Winner!
Those tools are so sharp it's like turning butter.
good jobs
Lol
The reason it turns like butter is because they are green. Even the boxes with lids he turns green. The lids won't fit when the boxes are dry!
beautiful bowl making liked it very much
This is great thank you for this no nonsense easy tuition ,
Brilliant videos. Your a wood maestro. Thank you!!
Hi , what a great demonstration 👍
Can you advice me on what is the best treatment for a bowl when using it for eating .
Thank you
Just use the bowl, and maybe wash it up first. Treat it like a wooden chopping board. I finish bowls with walnut or boiled linseed oil that come off when washed, so if a bowl is going straight into use you might not bother with a finish.
You can oil a bowl or plate, but if you have it in constant use, just wash it using hot water and detergent as you would a wooden chopping board.
An excellent video especially for a beginner.
Thanks
very nice work ! well done
Wow your an amazing wood Turner
He's the wood-turning boss
I would love to learn how to do this in person!
No idea why I am watching this. But its oddly satisfying .
Muneer Baloch You must be a woodworker within.
Hahahah very funny comment
your inner woodworking demon wants to be released :-)
That’s how I got into it! Lol
Once you do it .......... you're HOOKED !! It's a VERY satisfying hobby !!
Love your videos keep it up.
Wow!! True artist😩
thanks for answering all the comments
amazing work this guy, bowl whatever but he's great

I've got several antique round wooden plates that turned elliptical. Any advice on how to put them back in shape? thx
You could re-turn them, but why would you. If they are flat and oval and therefore quatersawn, they might go back to round if soaked.
@@RichardRaffanwoodturning thx. will try soaking one tho it's stained with shellac or something like that.
Excellent! True mastery.
Would it still change shape if you put it in a dehydrator instead of a microwave?
Great video! What brand and model is that lathe?
Excellent
Excellent thankyou
Brilliant tutorial..Many thanks!
Are these chisels forged by the dwarfs in the heart of a dying star? They're so sharp they seem out of this world
I don't know how you make some of those cuts, I'd be getting catches left right and centre.
The mark of a pro, making it look easy.
Richard has a video completely on ''catches'. Well worth watching. Save me a lot of headaches.
One sure helper is SHARP TOOLS ... and PATIENCE. Stay safe and have FUN !!

Do you turn the bowl along the woodgrain or across the woodgrain? Would it matter?
Crossgrain, as in this video, makes for a stronger bowl that's less likey to split.
Lavorazione del legno al tornio, che passione!
Does anyone know what lathe he is using? I love that vintage look
At 2:08 it seems to be a Vicmarc lathe
@@Νίκος-κ4ε3υ thx for that my friend
Vicmarc VL150.

1. It's hard to tell from the video, but which way is the "end grain" of the wood facing?
2. What many rpm are you using while cutting the bowl?

Bowls are usually made with cross grain (lying at right angles ot the lathe axis) and thath's the case here.
@@RichardRaffanwoodturning thank you sir
Wow, very nice.
You made it looked too easy. Great work.
You Sir, are a master!
You know what? I have a sneaky feeling this bloke has done this before.
No, really?🤣😱
Gotta say, seeing the bowl evened out was very satisfying.
I can't fit a chuck on my lathe (it's about 100 years old with oddball threads). Are there any vids on doing it the "old" way?
Great technician .
Fantastic.

Was the wood not already kiln-dried? If we know the wood is DRY, do we still have to do the roughing/drying thing?
This is mesmerizing
