amazing instructional video....you have done an excellent JOB!!! I have a 2000 civi 6.5 TD HMMWV that I try my best to maintain myself. Please keep these vids coming! Mayb common maintenance/repair items including this as well as brakes to mention another would help the normal guy keep our rigs in top shape and on the road. Again keep it up.....btw I have new rear rotors and brake pads and other components on their way from HPG.....he and travis at rubberduck are my go to peeps.
I have a 1989 M998. My front right half shaft did not have the wire ring that holds the ball bearing assembly into the bearing housing on the inboard side. My bearing housing has what seems to be a pressed on metal retainer that caps the end of the bearing housing that prevents the ball bearing assembly from being pulled out. Any idea on how to get this off so I can replace the CV boots? Or do I need to dissasemble the half shaft from the outboard side or the side with the splines? Any help would be appreciated.
David, what you have are 7k halfshafts and unfortunately you'll have to destroy that ring to service the halfshaft. Depending on how you plan to use the vehicle if you are going to be doing any offroading I would consider upgrading to 10k halfshafts otherwise the 7k will be good around town with stock drivetrain. Most people dont both servicing the 7k halfshafts so I cannot comment on where to source a replacement retainer.
Nice job on demonstrating how easy the job really is I have one concern what do I talk to bolts to when I install the shaft back up to the brake disc. ?
7k halfshafts are different. There is a pressed on retainer. You cannot remove this retainer without replacing so make sure you have a replacement ahead of time.
@@lthummer5207 ...and 12k CVs are different as well? I ve heard there are 12k ones and assumed they are bigger than original/ standard ones. But as it seams there are 3 varinats? What does the # refer to? Vehicle GW?
Great Video. Hope you can make more like this. Thanks

Know this video was done a while ago and just want to say you can get the boots directly from AM General for $20.00 each.
Great video, you should give classes.
Very informative, just got one question though...... What kind of grease do you recommend? Would STP High Temp Grease work okay????
thank you
Thank you. Very helpful.

Always thoght a half shaft was somthing that goes into a ridgid axle. And drive shaft was a jointed ether end?
Great video thank you so much!

According to the service manual, torque the bolts to 48ft-lbs
Nice work!
Are both boots on inside and outside of half shaft the same size.?
Great video, definitely something I'm going to tackle, will this process be the same with original 7k shafts?
