Thursday Captain Sizing Changed?? True to size, Half size down, and Wide compared.

  • I've noticed others saying that Thursday has changed its lasts for Captains over the last couple of years. This makes it difficult to get a new pair in the same size as an older pair. In this video I'm comparing TTS, 1/2 size down, and 1/2 size down Wide in an attempt to find what fits most like my old Captains.
UPDATE: Since making the video, I've learned that the Rugged & Resilient Captains and the Classic Collection Captains use different lasts, which explains the difference. On Thursday's website, you can see the last each boot was made under the Product Features / Release Notes page for each boot.

I just got a pair about 6 months ago, in the size I normally wear...11.5EE, and they were also big. The extra space was easily taken up by adding a nice arch support insole. I have to admit, even though it fits nicely now, it does look physically big on my feet, compared to my other shoes. For $200 a pair, you'd think they would get their sizing figured out.

Thanks for putting this out there. I got some Thursday's for the first time and noticed it seems like the normal width is a narrow width from some other manufacturers, I returned for a half size up because this particular boot does not offer a wide width. Have not come in yet so we will see how that goes.

I got a pair of Captains in December of 2022. I ordered my exact shoe size of 11, which is what I always buy for sneakers and work/dress shoes. (I.e. I ordered my exact shoe size as shown on one of those metal shoe measuring devices at a shoe store) I got the Captains in the mail (matte black) and they fit perfect and they are the best looking boots I have ever seen. They go well with any clothes I wear and look good with a suit too. They do have a strong leather smell (or maybe its the coloring that I'm smelling) but overall they are amazing and I'm very happy with them.

Last time I tried to give Thursday boots was in 2018. I wear size 12 everything most of the time. I picked up a pair of Dukes in Honey suede. Went half size down as they recommend on their site, my fit were flapping inside, too big. Exchanged it for size 11, they were too small. Tried a size 11 in black regular leather and they fit better than suedes. But either way I sold them shits because they were very uncomfortable to walk in, painful. I do love the honey suede, I can’t find a color like that anywhere. I wonder if they fixed their sizing problems since 2018.

I had the same exact thing happen to me ordering three different pairs of these (Captains). Thursday really needs to get on top of their quality control. I also ordered a few pairs of their Hero (prev. Titan) boots and found significant quality control issues in all those pairs as well. If they keep this up they are not going to survive in the long run.

i agree. their sizing is a like a lottery and when you return “too many” shoes/boots due to inconsistent sizing they flag you and you have to pay restocking fees!! be advise.

I've had similar inconsistencies but the other way around. I have 3 pairs of Captains in total. I have 2 pairs in Brown and Natural from circa 2018/19 in sz 8.5. I purchased my 3rd pair in Arizona Adobe about 3-4 months ago in the same sz 8.5.
First, the 2 pairs from 2018/19 are slightly longer than the 2022 Captains. Later, I also learned that the Captains in "Rugged & Resilient" leathers, which the Arizona Adobes are and the Brown/Naturals are NOT, are actually using a new Last with a wider, rounder toe box. So actually, for me the new 2022 Arizona Adobe Captains that I bought fit more comfortably than my previous Captains as they're slightly shorter but slightly rounder/roomier at the toe.
But as someone whose been in the apparel manufacturing industry for almost a decade, I chock that up to batch variation. I don't believe Thursday owns their manufacturing(as most shoe and apparel companies don't) so differences could be due to whichever factory each batch of boots came from. In your video when you were comparing stitching, the last boot on the Right-side was missing the stitching entirely at the bottom of the heel cup at the heel stack. Apparel/shoe manufacturers(the actual factories, not the Brands) produce products for several brands at a time so if one factory is full and cannot take any new orders, an apparel/shoe company that needs product made will have to find another manufacturer or use one of their other previously worked with manufacturers that DO have room in that factory's production queue.
If an apparel/shoe company has a hot-selling item and they need more produced ASAP, there's a possibility that their "preferred-factory" is full and cannot take a new order request from that apparel/shoe company. So if said apparel/shoe company doesn't want to miss out on orders from consumers they will need to use a different factory that is able to fulfill orders. The "different factory" may do things slightly differently, or use slightly different thread or have slightly different shades of leather, or slightly different lace eyelets etc.
    Sorry for the long post!

I usually wear a 10 on boots and sneakers. I bought a 10 on diplomats and they were too big. Then I went to a 9 1/2 and my toes were cramped in the front too small. so I decided to do a 9 1/2 wide and the fit perfect.

Footwear is the one product that is not online friendly. Because there are not standard sizing between companies and types of shoes. Dress shoes/ boots are one size and sneakers are another size. Even the size is not standard, a 9.5 in Thursday is different than a 9.5 in Red Wings. My wife bought me a pair of Captains for Christmas. It took three attempts to get it right. She ordered a half size smaller than my sneaker size. That was too big, went down a whole size and that was too narrow, I split the difference and that seems to work. The length is a little longer than I like, but they fit perfectly everywhere else.

I'm glad they did this-kind of. I had to get true to size because the advertised half size down was too small. Now I can safely buy half a size down, per their recommendation. As for the rest, Thursday's QC is really bad. They offer a good boot at a good price. Most people don't notice the stitching, and they'll get scuffed up anyway. The poor QC makes for good value. I can live with that. But I much prefer my more expensive boots.

  • @tonydillinger2553

Not sure about sizing yet but I had to replace or return my third pair of boots to Amazon because of QC problems. This replacement will be boot number 4. If this next pair has issues, I'm tempted to send it to Thursday. And hopefully, they can send me a pair with no problems.

I’ve had some inconsistent sizes as well. I normally wear an 9 in sneakers. I bought a pair of Captain Arizona Adobes in 8.5 and they feel great. I decided to order a pair of Captains in Natural in both an 8 and 8.5. The 8 was slightly bigger than the 8.5 and felt wider. The 8.5 was much narrower than the Arizona Adobes to the point it hurt to wear them. Unfortunately Thursday was sold out of many of the sizes in Natural so instead of exchanging, I just ended up returning them. It’s a bummer because I really love the way my Arizona Adobes feel. Hoping I can find another finish that fit well in the future.

What is going on with Thursday boots man , the sizing is crazy, they state on their website to get a half size smaller that your sneaker size and it confuses the hell out of me. Why sneakers why not actual boot size , is it because it fits more like a sneaker ? From the looks of it may a well get a half size smaller and if your EE like I am get a EEE ? Is the quality getting poorer ? Seems like great boots for the price.

They are great boots. I always get a half size down. I'm a D width though. I don't know about the wide widths. Good leather boots will stretch and break in after wear. You don't want your heel sliding around. They may seem snug at first but as they stretch and mold to your foot, they get super comfortable.
