    Just so you know, the alcohol difference between Kansas and Missouri is no longer a thing. This was filmed pre-new beer regulations. Otherwise, go enjoy some great BBQ for me and have a great time visiting! Kansas City really is a great city.

      Geo.....yes this city has had its issues with racism. But we are striving to be better. And with ALL urban cities, you do have your naste parts of towns. But they are slowly improving....just like airport and water systems.....tax payers approved of bond issues to make them better.

      It's interesting you mentioned Juneteenth. When I was a kid and even a young adult from the 70'-90's, many people, including many black Americans. I knew about it because my dad grew up in a mostly Mexican/Black neighborhood near downtown KC in the 40's-60's and he used to talk about it. I literally brought it up to some of my black buddies when I was in the navy in the early 90's and they thought I was giving them a hard time and had made it up. Now everyone acts like "oh, yeah..Juneteenth...I know all about that..." but most people had no idea what it was until recent history.

    Great video! You've captured the surprise of KC pretty well. I've lived all over this country...Seattle, Charlotte, Dallas, Philly, Atlanta, KC...and have traveled the world and experienced so many great cultures. It was a shock to us when we moved here 10 years ago for a new job that it completely sucked us in. We love it! It has replaced North Carolina as "home" for our family and it is unlikely we'll ever leave. We live on the Kansas side, but honestly...if you live here you rarely notice that there are state lines. It is one big metropolitan area that we all feel pride in. I often call it Dallas junior when people ask. Many of the same amenities and things-to-do without the BIG of Dallas - less traffic, less severe summer temps, nicer people, more laid back. When the new airport is done in a couple of years getting in and out of here will be much easier as well. Enjoy your travels...and thanks for recognizing our hidden gem. (Now, let's keep it a secret!) ;)

    I've lived in Missouri for most of my life, in the suburbs of Kansas City, MO. and in a small town just outside of Kansas City, MO.
    I am 75 years old and was here when Union Station was in it's heyday! The people that went through that Massive Beautiful Building was Amazing! Those Huge Trains Pulling Up Underneath the building to load and unload passengers was thrilling. My Father was Switchman and Engine Foreman for The Union Pacific Railroad and we, he and his family got a pass to ride on the trains for free. So we did a lot of traveling! Anyway
    You are so right, there is great food, great museums, The Truman Library in Independence, MO, just a short drive. I don't know about the night life anymore but the city used to be filled with Great Clubs, with some Great Jazz Bands. Classic Restaurants and High End Hotels. Even a Classic Hamburger Joint on the Plaza, Winsteads, probably the best Hamburger and Chocolate Malt Anywhere and I Believe it is Still There. The Architecture is Beautiful, the City has Restored so much of the City, trying to bring back its former Glory. While you are here take in a Chiefs or Royals Game. The town goes crazy wild over their Teams! There is so much more I could tell you about but I've rattled on long enough! Lol. I'll end by saying give the City a try, you will be amazed in this Fly Over State! Just one more thing, check out the Christmas Lights on the Plaza! People come from all over to see them turn them on, on Thanksgiving Night!
    Be Safe and God Bless! You brought back a lot of memories!
    PS, Best Bar BQ Ever!

      Wow, cool. I used to imagine it being alive. I lived there when it was totally not in use, just some sectioned off restaurant tucked in there tight. I would sneek off and explore, and walked all around when it was all empty and not in use. It really made me wonder why that space was so incredibly under-utilised. I have not been there since it came alive again. But i will get there

    Kansas City born and raised! Loved the video but for anyone that’s watching who have never been here, the thing about friendly people is absolutely true and I would even go as far to say it’s understated in this video.
    I meet a lot of people who move here for work and they all ask me “why is everybody so nice here?” Almost as if they are suspicious lol. We are definitely a different kind of city.

      LOL, I moved from NE Ohio, and that was literally one of the first things I noticed. People are just warmer and friendlier than most metro areas, to the point where it's almost absurd.

    Thank you so much!! Did you know that the Country Club Plaza was built by J.C. Nichols (the person)? He paid for the whole thing, including the streets and all of the lighting. Originally there were no stop signs. It was a time when there were fewer autos and everyone was expected to be courteous. Over time they have added a few stop lights and some stop signs. Still very easy to manage and there is a lot of parking. It is an absolutely fabulous place to visit if you come to KCMO! And there are several really great hotels here in KCMO. I hope you all visit one day :) Oh and the stadium the Chiefs and the Royals play in is also here in KCMO. LOVE our Chiefs and Royals!

    Kansas City is a wonderful, wonderful place! I lived there for nine years and it was just absolutely fantastic! You just scratched the surface with the music scene. There’s the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts where the KC Symphony performs as well as so many quality theatre venues in town (in KS and MO) doing everything from straight plays to musical theatre to opera. Not to mention the jazz scene here. It’s an amazing city if you’re into the arts. :)

    KC is all of this and growing. The street car has started expanding south of union station, new airport coming in March 2023, talks of the baseball stadium moving downtown, emergence of the crossroads district, and the first ever woman’s professional soccer stadium by the river front. The city is only going to get better as the years go on.

  • @kc2dc444
    @kc2dc444 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great video. I started following you for when we travel international, so it's cool, to see you talk about KC. I'm from Kansas city and now live in the Washington DC area. KC is so underrated. Not just underrated, but just totally under the radar. Even though the Chiefs and Royals and MLS Sporting have won championships lately, people still don't realize what the actual city of KC is like. It's actually a large city of 2.4 million with a lot to do. KC has museums and performing arts venues and amusement parks, a great zoo, union station etc and yet people think KC is small or rural or something. People out here also don't know the city is primarily in Missouri, especially the urban and cultural parts, tourist attractions etc. The skyline is in Missouri, anytime you see KC's skyline (Downtown or its secondary skylines like the plaza), it's always Missouri. You can actually spend several days in KC and see most of what the city offers and never even set foot in Kansas. (even the airport and all the Amtrak stations are in Missouri).
    The KS side is nice, Overland Park is a nice large corporate suburb for example and KCK has the speedway and soccer team and the KS side is a big chunk of the metro population (almost half). But the KS side is mostly suburban and has very few attractions so it looks like the suburbs of any other large city with office parks and what not.
    Also, people don't realize how hilly and green KC is. People think KC is flat and it's just not and it's also very green and forested. It's a great city, probably one of the best mid sized metros in the country. Too bad most people would never even give it a chance because it gets a bad rap due to where it's located (FYI, metro KC votes blue despite being in MO and KS too).
    Thank god they are getting a new airport terminal. Using KCI airport was always the most depressing thing about going to KC. And speaking of KC's airport, while KC is far from the coasts, it's the best place to live if you travel a lot. Both coasts, Texas, Canada etc all no more than a 2-3 hour flight. It's so easy to travel the country when you live right in the middle of it and Missouri and Colorado offer quite a bit of outdoor recreation for short vacations.
    Oh and KCMO did get federal funding to extend the streetcar from downtown to the plaza area. Still a few years out from opening, but it's happening.
    One more thing, the real bbq in KC is in KCMO and it's in the African American parts of the city. KC bbq is culturally urban and African American or places like Gates, BBs, Arthur Bryant's, LC's etc. Joes is popular, but not really "KC" bbq. So for good real KC bbq, go to Gates or LC's or something. The Gates on The Paseo is really nice. For a nicer sit down experience, go to the original Jack Stack near union station or Q39 in midtown. Those places have good atmosphere and good bbq, but you have to also do some real KC urban bbq too.

    • @disoriented1
      @disoriented1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't agree with the 'bad rap'..KC and the metro area votes like the USA votes... Jackson County, MO and Wyandotte County, KS do vote heavily 'blue'..(which seems to be why the KC area shouldn't have a 'bad rap') But before anyone thinks the metro is a 'Blue, blue heaven'..realize that the rest of the metro reliably votes that incarnate evil 'red', on both sides of the state line. I am being facetious..I don't know why a simple description of the pros and cons of Kansas City has to convince outsiders we vote one way or another. When you mention politics, either way, you drive off half of your target audience!

    The Country Club Plaza (or, The Plaza) is considered to be the first shopping mall in the US. It was opened in 1922. Over the years, many different shops and restaurants operated there - mostly locally owned places, until the last 10 - 20 years when the local stores have been replaced (largely) by national or regional chains.
    The new airport, which opened in March 2023, is very nice and has lots of restaurants, some shops, and many pieces of art. While maybe not as convenient as the old airport, it is more modern, light and airy, and the few times I have used it were pleasant. (They do need to work on the pick-up process for arriving passengers, that can be a mess.)

    Glad you mentioned that Union Station is still a working train station as well. We take trains regularly, we've gone to Chicago, Manhattan/NY, DC, Connecticut, etc. It's a really relaxing and comfortable way to travel and you get to see so much of the little towns you wouldn't if you flew or drive(if you're the driver like I always am :) ) . The historic Southwest Chief rail route goes from LA to Chicago and back, through Kansas City. My dad grew up no far from the station and he said when he was a kid in the 40's and 50's there used to be 150 passenger trains a day through there. Those pictures you showed of the old days when the whole main hall was filled with benches and people alluded to that. I grew up here in the 70's and 80's, but left for the Navy in '89 and lived away for almost 30 years, only recently moving back here. I've lived in and travelled all over the country and other countries as well and I love living here. Great video.

But the conductor was my uncle and a part of the riders were from home and I knew they all. Because my grandfather worked for the railroad he was waiting for me when I got off.

Behind that are also Asian supermarkets!!! Cool snacks inside. And junk. We also like to go to vintage stores! Some are upscale vintage boutiques! The Nelson Atkins is a MUST! The Plaza is great if you are rich-LOL! But we are not! We like to eat at the Jerusalem Cafe/hookah house and get kebobs! Or get a BBQ. Never had bad bbq in KC honestly.
