You mentioned you're from California. Our only ask is that you do NOT vote for the reasons you left. We do not want that here. Overland Park is a real treasure; lots of great food there. Also, the smaller the BBQ joint, oftentimes, the better. Be sure to check out the mom-and-pop stops along the way (Oklahoma Joes began in a gas station). Enjoy.

Hard to speak in detail in a comment, but I would say this - if you are careful on where you live, you can avoid most of the crime in Kansas City. We live in an area that is continually ranked in the 10 most dangerous neighborhoods in Kansas City, and we have had some experiences that are definitely undesirable. However, we have never felt in immanent danger because we aren't involved in illegal activities. If you would like to chat about it more, feel free to reach out via text or email.
Great question! This video is referring to Kansas City as the greater metro area. I would include both KCK and KCMO, as well as the surrounding areas that would consider themselves the Kansas City metro (Johnson County, Platte & Clay County, etc.) Does that make sense?
I actually think KC has a pretty good size Asian community and is continuously growing. Of course it's not as big as other major US cities, but I wouldn't consider it small. KC is not a small po-dunk town by any means. My best friend of 17 yrs is Hmong. And KC is known to be divided a bit into different Asian districts. There is a decent sized Korean and Chinese community with pretty great (more authentic restaurants) around the Overland Park area, Vietnamese & Thai community in downtown westbottoms area, & etc. You just have to know where to go and broaden your friend circle. And if you're new, use Yelp! It never lets me down

If you want a great schools system and crappy colleges, move to the Overland Park/Olathe Kansas area. Neither Kansas or Missouri have academically admired colleges. If you can afford it, your kids will all go out of state to college and never move back. The cost of living is higher than you think and most people are underpaid relative to cost of living. Everything is very “old fashioned” here and women are NOT respected at work or in the community. If you want social connections as a women, you’d better be married. Bleh to activities. Kansas City never gets any K or JPop acts and some musical acts still ignore KC, no more Alamo Drafthouse(best model for movie theaters in the US imo, a nice blend of Arthouse and blockbuster selections) since moronic Venture Capitalists bought it and no Asian style Karaoke rooms. Frankly if you can work a remote job I would tell people to move over and rent in Japan for a while, such a better place to live for the cost than the US including Kansas City. I am saying this as someone who hates the idea of renting. There are free houses you can get too if you don't mind living in rural Japan and are willing to fix it up.
Thanks for commenting! I think that's quite a comparison - Japan to Kansas City. I would think that would be hard to factor in all the cultural differences, language barriers, etc.
@@LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWongEhhh worth it for all the opportunities. The fact it is cheaper to rent in Kyoto than live in some places in KC is pathetic. At least Kyoto isn't craven to tear down their beautiful historic buildings like some suburbs in KC.
@@XVa-uj8m Sure, worth it for a certain subset of people, but I would say that for most, moving to a foreign country would be out of the question. I've lived overseas, and we consistently send families from our churches to do so, but I think for the average person they would not want to learn a new language for cheaper cost of living. Also, with Japan's declining population, I think you're inheriting a completely different set of problems.
DO NOT MOVE TO KANSAS CITY MISSOURI (ACTUAL CITY). Maybe suburbs are different on the Kansas side (vs Missouri side). The county that the actual city is in, Jackson county Missouri, is awful. The politicians have wrecked it. Property taxes are sky rocketing and mismanaged. The city itself is also run poorly run. And the small business environment is in severe decline.
I can see what you mean if you want to avoid the crime. However, if you live in different parts of Kansas City, Missouri (like Clay County, or Platte County), it is much different, don't you think?
Maybe if you enjoy crowd less golf sessions you shouldn't advocate bringing more crowds of people to our city. We don't want to be over populated and congested like those coast cities. Just enjoy the city and keep it a secret. Sheesh
I disagree. I have lived oversees and in other cities. Kansas City is one of the best kept secrets in the US. Cost of living low, people are friendly and other amenities you criticized KC not having are improving.
LOL, KC is a joke, deluded dumb homers that hate any type of change or progress. Hope you lose one of your professional sports teams to a much better city shortly!
I’ve lived here my whole life. It’s boring af. The prices are too high for the median income. And the job market is only good in a couple sectors. KC being friendly is laughable. Were polite. Like southerners. And then we talk about you behind your back. Social groups are tight knit. I was also a nanny for 8 years. There is NOT enough to do for kids in KC. If I go to the zoo again I’m gonna scream. I’d rather live in a trailer out west than a mansion in Leawood. Just a boring unmotivating flyover city getting new things for people from Cali to move here while the original residents get pushed out. So great 🙄
I have homes in California, NYC and Kansas City. Kansas City is one of the worst places to live for a variety of reasons. The most glaring issue is lack of culture. There is very little. You're in a mostly white and vanilla city, in the bible belt where, they hate change. The arts reflect this, the food, and entertainment reflect this as well. You are also very limited in what there is to do. You have the Plaza, 95th for the mall and retail, sports, Westport, Barry road, again for movies and retail, The market area near downtown, The Nelson-Atkins museum, I mean, there isn't much. Furthermore, you are literally 1,000+ miles from any major body of water. Kansas City is also not a market that recording artist want to come. Nearly all the major artists skip the Kansas City market. Why? It's small and not as profitable. I've lived all over the US, and I travel 4 months out of the year. I promise you, Kansas City is not anywhere I would solely want to live. I'm in Kansas City for about 2 weeks every 3 months or so because of a business I own in the area. In the past, I've lived in Kansas City months at a time, and, really, disliked having to do so. If you're not a very worldly person, small-minded, are not a dreamer and have no desire to see the world, Kansas City is going to be fine for you. Most who live here in Kansas City do not know any better. They are content to live and die in this small city.
Yeah, I can see your perspective! Thanks for commenting! Coming from Los Angeles, and living overseas, I realize that I don't have the perspective of living in every city, and that you have credible reasons for not considering Kansas City as an artist. I do think that the majority of people who would agree with me are in my shoes - young family, value the pace of life and ease that Kansas City provides. I would not imagine that a burgeoning artist would like it here for the reasons that you provided. Thanks again for commenting, and if you're in Kansas City soon, I would love to treat you to a meal or a coffee. Have a good one!
This is true! The the video is me making my best case for why Kansas City is a great place to live. I can see that for some people, it would not work well for them!
Pros of KC: cheap COL, All 4 Seasons, Great BBQ, good sports culture, great suburbs. Easy traffic. Growing entertainment areas. Lots of church options if you’re Christian. Decent economy. Cons of KC: No ocean. No mountains. Extreme Seasons. High Violent Crime Rate. Occasional bad natural disasters like Blizzards & Tornadoes. Lack of diversity for restaurants & grocery stores. Horrible public transit. If you’re not religious out if you’re Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, Agnostic etc…good luck finding your community. The 2 states 1 city thing can be annoying…. Personally, I get why people like it. It’s not for me, because I love mountains & water & moderate weather …but I’m willing to pay more for a higher quality of life. If you’re not into hiking mountains or water activities & you can handle hot humid summers and cold winters then give it a shot. Just visit 1st before you buy. Side note: 2008: LA,SF,& Seattle avoided the recession…not sure if KC favored well lol. And soccer city KC wasn’t picked as a World Cup city 😂.
Great list! I may be mistaken, but I believe that LA was hit pretty hard during the 2008 recession...Seattle, I'm not so sure. We WERE picked as a World Cup Host City in 2026!
St. Louis is a much better city than K.C. Despite the fact we have lost 2/3 of our city population. The urban fabric StL still has from our trolley era lends itself WAY more to urbanist revitalization than car-centric K.C. Cities built for humans first (not automobiles) will thrive into the future. There’s still plenty room on the East side of MO if you want an actual world class city to call home. ;]
Well, well, well! If it ain't an ol' Missouri city shootout! 😀I DID notice that about St. Louis when I visited there! I would also say that your infrastructure are parks are better too! Fair points! @@LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong Yeah, I worked for aetna and they were mulling a place to move HQ. Someone brought up STL and I pushed so very hard away because of the crime. I am pretty sure that in the last 15 years we've had at least half a million and growth already
Yes, it really does! It feels different from when we moved here 6 years ago.
lived in kc my whole life and so has generations before me. My mom grew up in the la area so its kind of ironic cause my dad grew up in kc
I assume you like it here?
This video is the first I've seen of yours. I'm a lifelong Missourian. We welcome you with open arms! As you've pointed out, there are lots of great reasons to live here! Enjoy.
Well, I don't shy away from the fact that I lean conservative as an evangelical Christian. Thanks for all the advice! Do you live in Overland Park?
I love my city so much. We maybe a red state but we actually get along as Republicans and Democrats. I'm black (light skin for context), my fiance is Laos. Her family is my family. Racism, we don't experience it as an interracial couple. I love it here.
Amazing! Have you lived here your whole life?
I appreciate you saying that
I appreciate you watching my videos!
Cap but I do love living here in Kansas City. The construction and traffic is an annoyance but way better than some cities.
People are nice but not as great with the hospitality like people in the South. First couple months it felt weird to say good morning to my neighbors because they wouldn’t say anything back😂
That's strange that you didn't find friendly neighbors! Where did you move to?
@@LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong North Kansas City, in the Parkville area. They are nice for sure. Not mean like New Yorkers. Just pretty stand off people lol
@@erv.7663 That is surprising! I would think that the hospitality would be great up there, but it all depends on your immediate neighbors. What brought you here?
I am curious about your take on crime. KC routinely ranks in the top 10 most violent cities in the nation.
Just a question.
Which Kansas City?
There are two.
It never lets me down
Thanks for contributing to the conversation! All great pieces of information. Do you live here as well?
@@LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong I was born and raised in KC, but have spent the last 9 years living abroad (Korea & Germany). However, I'm finally moving back to KC at the end of August. So I will be soon!

OP is the best place to live in the KC metro due to the amenities the city offers, the low crime rate, the school districts, and overall proximity to everything. It's also more expensive (though not the most expensive in the area), but you can't go wrong with OP
@@LeoNelBuilds Agreed! OP is a wonderful place to live in the metro. I think that the only weakness there is that there is less to do than the Missouri side. Some people don't share my opinion though!
@@LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong it depends on your lifestyle and personal preference. My idea of a good time is taking a walk at the lake, taking my kids to the mall, or going on a date downtown (which is only 30 mins from where I live).

Kansas has the worst mental health care in the nation. The pharmacy system is falling apart. It you like strip malls and super churches, yeah, Kansas/Kansas city is great.
Pretty broad stereotypes, but I would assume that they are based off your experience here. Thanks for commenting.
No he’s on point about the schools, Idk if any of those churches help ppl of need, but “google” says Overland Park -suburbs has the best mental health care. But my dad molested the police into taking me into unwarranted mental hospitals for no other reason than the state college is in butt **** nowhere…..&
I think that we have found that there are a lot of local kids going to college at UMKC. We live only a few minutes from campus, and we have many local students coming to UMKC from local areas. There are a few from Overland Park as well. As far as the comment on "super churches" I'm sure those are everywhere.

Is it Bears out there
Not sure what you mean by this?
I think you watch Fox News too much. Small businesses downtown are booming. I know. I work for two ;)
Maybe if you enjoy crowd less golf sessions you shouldn't advocate bringing more crowds of people to our city.
We don't want to be over populated and congested like those coast cities. Just enjoy the city and keep it a secret. Sheesh
I enjoy less crowded golf sessions, but I also enjoy helping people move to a place where they can comfortably afford life. 🤷🏽♂️
The more inflated money that comes in from the coasts...the more inflated the midwest gets. Logic over morals
The only thing I care about is the Chiefs
That’s the same as a lot of people here!
You’re smoking some good shit! I travel to KC twice per month and I always stay in Kansas instead of the Missouri side. Never! Never! Never!
Nowhere on the Missouri side? I think the Missouri side has more things to do.
Lol yeah there are a lot of Asians in KC as well
We have certainly been noticing more! We didn't notice that many Asians here when we first moved!
I disagree. I have lived oversees and in other cities. Kansas City is one of the best kept secrets in the US. Cost of living low, people are friendly and other amenities you criticized KC not having are improving.
Thanks for commenting! I agree wholeheartedly! I think people overlook Kansas City. Do you live here now?
So great 🙄
Research crime now
Do you not see my other videos about crime?
People with young families value cost of living, ease of and access to transportation and safety
This is true! The the video is me making my best case for why Kansas City is a great place to live. I can see that for some people, it would not work well for them!
Its good to know that a person like you doesn't want to live here. Makes me happy knowing that I don't have to deal with you, loser.
you are obviously lying. WHY would you own a house here if you have houses in NY and Cali and hate KC too? You make no sense. Liar.
Their police department is one of the most corrupt in the nation. Top 10.
Really?! Where did you find this info? I’m always willing to learn more about this.

No thanks! We’re happy here.
Cheap cost of living my ass.
St. Louis is a much better city than K.C. Despite the fact we have lost 2/3 of our city population. The urban fabric StL still has from our trolley era lends itself WAY more to urbanist revitalization than car-centric K.C. Cities built for humans first (not automobiles) will thrive into the future. There’s still plenty room on the East side of MO if you want an actual world class city to call home. ;]
