Burnt ends are most definitely NOT the leftovers. They're cut from the fattier end of the brisket called the point. They're usually then then thrown in some sauce and smoked a little more which makes them extra delicious. When I was in school the Oklahoma Joe's (in the gas station) was on my way to and from school. The line would form before they opened and it was fantastic. Grew up in the suburbs of KC (on the Kansas side). Chili and cinnamon rolls were on a constant rotation in the school systems! It’s still a nostalgic food for me. Every once in a while when my mom makes chili, I’ll take the cinnamon rolls :)
haha sounds amazing! i'm not surprised that it's not served everywhere in the US, but I am surprised not many of us outside of Kansas have even heard of people eating this combo 😎
@jessicamoberly5849 if you don't mind me asking, how old are you and where did you do your schooling? I too am from the MO side and am nearly 50 and this wasn't a thing in blue springs
Hi guys, this video was perfect 😍. I totally love barbequing , so is the best food for me. And the confirmation was by Aimara & Gordon dance 😂.. I never seen that in your guys videos. So for the moment I can say that this is my favorite food tour video 🔥🔥🔥
haha that's amazing! i don't think many Americans know that there are people eating chili with cinnamon rolls in the middle of the country. I hope to try it soon 😎
cinnamon rolls and chilli are definitely a thing in KS. Even our public schools serve cinnamon rolls with chilli. I taught my friends from Michigan this amazing combo just a couple years ago.. they loved it.
Chili and cinnamon rolls is, from my experience, definitely s small toen thing. I never heard if it in KC MO until i went to smaller towns outside of KC
My whole life I’ve never heard of a cheese slipper (have lived in KC for all of that life). I want to try it, though! It’s fun to know everything and still learn more from this area!
Chili and Cinnamon rolls is a midwest thing. I came from Iowa to KC and it was big in rural Iowa, seems to be in rural Kansas too. Seems to be hit or miss for people knowing about it in the city or in Missouri in general in my experience. Never have seen it in any restaurant around the metro. I mean in the 80's in NW Iowa school lunch chili day always came with big cinnamon roll side.
Cool! Yea I guess it's just some specific places in the MW that do it. I've lived in Illinois & Indiana and am fairly certain it's not a thing. And we spend a decent amount of time around Cincinnati where chili is big but I haven't seen it with cinnamon rolls. For us the search continues... 😎
I’m a Kansas City local, and chili with cinnamon rolls is more a Midwest thing than specifically KC. I’ve lived here my whole life and hadn’t heard of it until my wife-who is from a small town in Kansas-introduced me to it. Essentially, you put a cinnamon roll in a bowl and then cover it in chili to eat. It sounds SUPER weird, but it’s surprisingly good with the combination of sweet and savory.
I’m from Overland Park and had never heard of this until last year. It’s possible we had this meal in elementary school lunchrooms, but I don’t remember it being “a thing” with anyone. When someone at work said they ate them together we all thought it was weird. Tried it. Still weird. And no consensus as to whether you actually eat them *together* of whether the cinnamon roll is a side or dessert. Most people here eat cornbread with chili.
Good to know we weren't totally off base haha! How fun that they serve it in school - breakfast of champions 😉 I guess we'll have to go to Kansas, then...
Very nice job, y'all! You did miss THE most iconic barbeque joint, Arthur Bryant's. Not everybody loves the original sauce, but it's one of the oldest and most famous. LC's is fantastic too, when you come back. And I've never heard of chili and cinnamon rolls, at least not together. Enjoyed your video!
I am an Oregon transplant to KC. The BBQ scene is ever changing - new places are always popping up and some are better than others. Authur Bryants is pretty a-ok but you also have Chef J and Harp BBQ - both are delicious. And then you have Wolfpack BBQ. And then... you get the idea. There are tons and most have something delicious to offer. Chili and Cinnamon Rolls - definitely a midwest thing - Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri - possibly more. If you see a restaurant called "Runza" and it's the right time of the year - you will see chili and cinnamon rolls offered on the same plate. They aren't TOGETHER on the plate- like you don't cover a cinnamon roll with chili but the flavors of each complement each other.
Yea I can imagine there are always new and innovative bbq spots jumping up around town. We wished we had more time to visit more, but didn't have much flexibility because we were dog sitting. Thanks for the chili & cinnamon roll tip! I actually did picture them on the same plate together 😂
I lived from 1973 to 2017 in Kansas City MO. Worked in the food service industry for a decade. I’ve never eaten or seen anyone eat chili and cinnamon rolls. lol
Fun video. Couple of things you missed. Arthur Bryant’s BBQ Italian food. Some of the best in the US. Italian Delite in Mission is a must whenever I’m home.
Thanks! Arthur Bryants will definitely be the 1st place we go when we come back to KC. We did also look into some Italian places, but the ones I found seemed more 'white tablecloth' style - which is fine, but can be awkward to film 🙃 Italian Delite looks great and super casual... also added to the list 🙌
I've lived in Kansas and Missouri, Ive never heard of a cheese Slipper...I feel like Im missing out! Love Betty Rae's and KC Joe's! Hands down best fries and that ZMan is amazing! I've never had chili and cinnamon rolls, but I have heard of them
haha yea it seems a lot of locals don't know about the cheese slipper - wonder if the internet led us astray on this one - www.tastingtable.com/1193917/cheese-slippers-are-a-cant-miss-kansas-city-comfort-food/ And yes - the Zman 😍
You guys did a good job choosing restaurants in KC. I would have recommended Arthur Bryant's instead of Q39, but to be honest all BBQ is pretty good. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.
Thanks for the tip! The handful of people we chatted with when arriving mentioned Q39, and it happened to be in our neighborhood. But would love to check out many more bbq places 🙌
I heard bad reviews about Arthur Bryant's recently. Like the food isn't good. I have been to q39 multiple times in in the last five years and it has been solid, every single time
I'm from KC, and the cinnamon roll/chili combo is new to me - but it sounds like a similar combo I grew up having in Missouri: a peanut butter and honey sandwich with chili.
Cinnamon rolls and chili are definitely a Kansas thing. We were an hour from KC and our family always serves them on Christmas eve, and that's one of my kids favorite school lunches.
I used to live in Kansas City and the brisket burnt ends fromJoe’s Kansas City Re probably the most amazing food you ever will eat. Burnt Ends is not a very accurate term I think they should be called “crispy brisket chunks”. They are amazing.
Yes! The crispy brisket chunks at Joe's are amazing 🙌 I used to avoid burnt ends bc of the name... I didn't want burnt meat on my plate. But we've seen the light.
I'm from KC and yes Chili with Cinnamon Rolls is very common here. They served it at my elementary school too. KC has a lot of areas near by that also consider themselves Kansas City but it's more metro than city proper. One of my favorite places is a place called Blue Koi for their pork dumplings and their china moon (A crispy shrimp and scallion flatbread served with a house made sweet sauce that may be plum like)
Definitely a thing from school lunches in the KC area, and likely the broader Midwest region. If chili was the main entree, there would be a huge cinnamon roll to go along with it. That said, I've never done anything weird like pour chili on the cinnamon roll, or dip the cinnamon roll in the chili, but for whatever reason they always went together. Outside of school lunches growing up, I can't remember seeing that combo on a menu anywhere in KC.
haha never dip the cinnamon roll in the chili - noted! thanks for the comment, i assumed based on the other comments that it was mostly a school lunch thing. guess we'll have to create our own next time we're somewhere that serves both 😎
Glad you guys got to try the Zman but I'm surprised so many people recommend Q39. Most people I know who live here (myself included) don't actually like it compared to our other famous options. I would have recommended Jack stack for the ribs and the cheesy corn. Also the pulled pork is to die for at any of our restaurants. Try that next time! Lamar's donuts is also a famous option you should try.
yea everyone we spoke with mentioned Q39, maybe because it was fairly close to where we were staying. It may not be a traditional 'sticky table' bbq joint, but we thought the food was excellent. We'll check out others like Jack Stack and Arthur Bryants next time! And Lamar's 😎
Yeah i have lived near kcmo all my life and have never heard of them together. While you guys were talking about it. I was like the server and like what?! Lol definitely must be a Kansas thing lol
Coming from Texas, Kansas City is definitely my favorite city I have been to in America. And I believe cinnamon rolls and chili is more of an Ohio thing... Could be wrong though.
As a lifetime Kansas Citian, I definitely recall cinnamon rolls and chili together in public school lunches, but I've never encountered the pairing as an adult.
Crossroads is dead before like 6-8pm. Everyone passed out from Friday night XD Y'all hit Joes, which is top notch, but there is one on the Kansas side in the suburbs called Blind Box BBQ and it is a heavy contender.
I'm Kansas City born and raised and that's what we pride ourselves on is being good people and hardworking at that. I grew up with treat people how you want to be treated but the Midwest hospitality is part of that in general. Seems like a lost art nowadays in many places unfortunately. Glad your alls visit was great to you!!!
Hiyo, only place you missed that is a great place is called Wabash, and its over in Excelsior Springs Missouri. If you come back i highly recommend the sampler platter and corn fritters. Another place i recommend for breakfast is either Big Biscuit or Corner Cafe, both of which are in Liberty Missouri and the cinnamon rolls in both are amazing.
thanks for the tips! hopefully we'll get a chance to check them out. we we're pretty limited without a car, so we stayed around downtown. but it would be great to explore beyond the city 😎
40 year KC native and I've heard of chili on spaghetti but never chili and cinnamon rolls but we take all kinds here. Glad you enjoyed all the BBQ. I haven't gotten into a fight over bbq superiority but I absolutely will if necessary ^_^
This is a great video. You did really well with your midtown recommendations. Except for the cheese slipper and cinnamon roll thing. Whoever gave you those recommendations is just weird. If you return to KC, you’ll have a thousand more barbecue recs to seek out, but the other low-key meal KC is known for for is tacos! We have no fewer than 150 local Mexican restaurants in the metro. Many small, mom-and-pop shops specializing in street tacos and other foods from their hometown. Mostly Jalisco, Michoacan, and chihuahua. Check out the KCK Taco Trail. Visit KCK tourism has a list of over 50 street taco shops on the KS side alone. My faves are Tacos el Tio and GG’s Barbacoa Cafe.
I was born and raised in Kansas. I grew up in Shawnee and definitely was exposed to the cinnamon roll in chili thing in school. It was never my thing but it was definitely a thing. I just recently moved to Maryland from having lived in Texas for the last 14 years. I used to buy Gates Barbecue Sauce by the case to have it. I haven't had any barbecue here yet and I really wasn't planning on it since it's not known for its barbecue but it looks like I'm going to have to buy a case of Gates Barbecue sauce.
Cinnamon roll and chili is a Kansas thing for sure. We had it in school every Tuesday. Thursdays was gravy day lol chicken nuggets and mash potatoes w gravy. My father grew up in Illinois and they do chili with peanut butter sandwiches.
Beer kitchen Mac and cheese is my favourite thing in the area. I'm also from Florida originally. Actually very near destination. My mother's tribe is from the panhandle and our Rez is north of pensacola.
Lived in KC all my life, 49 years. We had chili and cinnamon rolls for school lunches all the time and still continue to eat it. But I’ve never heard of a cheese slipper.
I live between Kansas City and St Louis Missouri and every year in school we had cinnamon rolls and chili. It was so good that to this day I enjoy chili and cinnamon rolls. Missouri/Kansas is where Midwest meets South meets Southwest, so you get those quintessential "American" foods.
I live here, born and raised. Great video but you missed it on the BBQ. Arthur Bryants is KC's OG opened since 1908. New Yorker magazine once called it the best BBQ in the world.
Agree - honestly, you can't really say you've tried KC BBQ until you run the gambit of many different places/styles of KC BBQ, such as Q39, LC's, Jack Stack, Arthur Bryants, Gates, Joes, etc.
@@waysoftheworld_ It's funny because around here, when you know your BBQ, it's either the newer fancier places compared to the older actual BBQ joints. Q39 and places like Joes or Jackstack all fall under "newer fancier places". The actual "older joints" consist of Bryants, LC's, Woodyard, Danny Edwards, etc... Great job though. Good work.
Thoughts: 1. I have lived in KC my whole life but have never heard the term “cheese slipper” 😅 2. Cinnamon and chili is more of a Nebraska thing. They have a chain called “Runya” that I think made it popular. My wife is from there and has informed me of such. 3. Shoutout to your host for excellent recommendations! I’ve been to most of those places dozens of times. Blackhole Bakery still feels like a hidden gem. 4. I love Betty Rae’s, but I’d also add High Hopes and French Custard to the list. 5. Messenger is good, but I’d add Oddly Correct and Second Best to the list. 6. I’m so so on the Neighborhood Cafe. I’d recommend the French Market and Homegrown instead. 7. Lastly, KCK is the Street Taco capital of America. You have to come back and eat some tacos! Glad you visited KC 😁
thanks for the tips! Blackhole was fantastic - and Neighborhood was partly a convenience thing (walking distance) and I confirmed they had chili and cinnamon rolls, so I assumed they served the combo 🤷🏻♂️
@@giannideangelo7340 yeah, it always has been. I lived over 20 years off 85th and Wornall just blocs from BBs. I was never a fan. I ordered BBQ nachos there one time and it’s the ONLY time I’ve been to a BBQ place and considered asking for my money back.

@@natecox7083 lol I am not near JOCO but I'm from Texas and think I am biased. But I am all for finding some nice little authentic dives somewhere that have great Mexican food. If you know of some places please share and I'll visit them
Chili and cinnamon rolls was a menu suggestions from the govt food programs in schools. The schools would get large scale cookbooks and this was in one. The Des Moines Register did a story on it, hence my knowledge.
Never heard of a cheese slipper, must be a hipster thing. My siblings swear that chili & cinnamon rolls were a thing growing up for school lunch but I must have suppressed that.
Next time yall come to KC do a BBQ tour haha!! Crossroads is more artsy but on the weekends during the day everyone goes to West Bottoms for antiques and food or just sleeping in from the nightlife at Power and Light! You guys should defintely try to experience a First Friday! If you like ice cream fairway creamery is by a local chocolatier if I recall and they sell his chocolates there. I had cinnamon rolls and chili at my school as a kid I think its a midwest thing. The cheese slipper originally was from a small hearth bakery called Fevere which Messenger has a bakery called Ibis that took it's place at one time but's no longer there. However, I don't feel the cheese slipper quality is as good as Fevere once was.

Sounds like bs to me. I was born and raised in kc and not one time in my life have I heard of chili and cinnamon rolls.
This is the correct answer! I'm from MO side burbs and it was a school lunch thing that transferred to adulthood for some of us. 🤷
@jessicamoberly5849 if you don't mind me asking, how old are you and where did you do your schooling? I too am from the MO side and am nearly 50 and this wasn't a thing in blue springs
Lol in KC suburbs means more jobs, density and less crime. City has gone down hill kind of a dump full of shootings now
Hi guys, this video was perfect 😍. I totally love barbequing , so is the best food for me. And the confirmation was by Aimara & Gordon dance 😂.. I never seen that in your guys videos. So for the moment I can say that this is my favorite food tour video 🔥🔥🔥
hahaha it was so good! We love BBQ so much too 😍 thanks so much for watching! 🙏🏼
@@waysoftheworld_ thank you guys for sharing 😍😍
im from a small town in Kansas. I never eat chili without a cinnamen roll. They just go together very well!!!!!
haha that's amazing! i don't think many Americans know that there are people eating chili with cinnamon rolls in the middle of the country. I hope to try it soon 😎
cinnamon rolls and chilli are definitely a thing in KS. Even our public schools serve cinnamon rolls with chilli. I taught my friends from Michigan this amazing combo just a couple years ago.. they loved it.
Cinnamon rolls and chili absolutely is a thing. I'm from rural Kansas and we make it for Christmas eve every year
Chili and cinnamon rolls is, from my experience, definitely s small toen thing. I never heard if it in KC MO until i went to smaller towns outside of KC
haha yea that probably explains why our waitress was so confused/ Next time will have to check out some small town diners in the area 😎
My whole life I’ve never heard of a cheese slipper (have lived in KC for all of that life).
I want to try it, though!
It’s fun to know everything and still learn more from this area!
Yea check it out! If they still host cheese slipper nights in the Crossroads it should be starting soon 😎
I've lived in the KC Metro my whole life. Cinnamon rolls and chili are definitely a thing. Your asking the wrong people 😆
Yea i guess so 😖 but does anywhere actually serve them together?? most comments are saying that it was served in school or they make it at home 🤷🏻♂️
It’s definitely not a thing.
Mouth wattering video guys 😋😋😋now i'm really hungry and it's ur fault😅😂 Can't wait for the next one ❤👉🙈🍗🍖🧀🥩🍔🥓
hahaha we take the blame! 😂 KC BBQ is out of this world!
I'm from KC and never heard of this. I'm not dismissing it. However, that food combination does sound super weird!!! Haha!
@@kathleenj3979 You should totally give it a try and report back your thoughts to everyone here that hasn’t had it.
Lived in Ks half my life and chili and cinnamon rolls is a big childhood memory. My KC, Missouri friends did not have this same childhood experience.
Yes - cinnamon rolls and chili is a thing in Kansas! Our school growing up always served it that way 😊
Good to know we weren't totally off base haha! How fun that they serve it in school - breakfast of champions 😉 I guess we'll have to go to Kansas, then...
Cinnamon rolls and chili are or were a pretty standard lunch item in school cafateria when I was in school. Once a month at least.
Thank you, I am in Kansas City vocal and I have never heard of black hole bakery. I’ll have to try it out!
The z-man is off the hook!
It's so good! Wish I had one right now
I’m from Kansas and the cinnamon rolls and chili is definitely a small town thing. Great stuff, come back to Kansas soon!
We would love to! On the hunt for chili and cinnamon rolls 🕵🏻♂️
Thanks so much! Yea - Arthur Bryant's seems to be the one we missed out on. It's #1 on our list whenever we go back!
Arthur Bryant’s BBQ
Italian food.
I was wondering if Arthur Bryant's was still around. That's the BBQ I ate growing up when I visited KC. It was amazing!!
@@waysoftheworld_ Three US Presidents have dined at Arthur Bryants Truman, Carter and Obama.
Arthur Bryant’s over Q39 is a wild thing to say lol
I heard bad reviews about Arthur Bryant's recently. Like the food isn't good. I have been to q39 multiple times in in the last five years and it has been solid, every single time
I FREAKING LOVE KANSAS CITY!!! I dream of BBQ 💭
Same 🤤
I'm from KC, and the cinnamon roll/chili combo is new to me - but it sounds like a similar combo I grew up having in Missouri: a peanut butter and honey sandwich with chili.
This is the first time hearing about peanut butter sandwiches with chili... you learn something new every day!
If we had chili at school it was always served with a cinnamon roll. I grew up an hour south of KC in a small town. definitely a thing. 😊
Life long Kansas Citian, never heard of a cheese slipper. Looks good though! Lol
I’ve lived in Kansas my entire life and I love chili with my cinnamon rolls. 😋
Love to know this!! Need to try them next time for sure!
Kansas City has great tasting food and huge variety. I never leave Kansas City hungry! Beautiful place to eat...more fountains than Rome, Italy.
haha it's impossible to leave KC hungry 😋
I've lived in KC my whole life and have never heard of a cheese slipper 😮 Looks good though!
KC is a damn fun town !
I sure hope they don't move the ballpark (Kaufmann) - it's in the PERFECT spot.
Great and interesting content. Thanks for sharing it. 👍👍👍😍😍😍
Thanks so much :)
I'm from KC and yes Chili with Cinnamon Rolls is very common here. They served it at my elementary school too. KC has a lot of areas near by that also consider themselves Kansas City but it's more metro than city proper. One of my favorite places is a place called Blue Koi for their pork dumplings and their china moon (A crispy shrimp and scallion flatbread served with a house made sweet sauce that may be plum like)
‘Cheese Slipper?’ I have lived in KCMO for 71+ years, and I have never heard of this! Now that I have, I will definitely find it. Thanks.
Outside of school lunches growing up, I can't remember seeing that combo on a menu anywhere in KC.
haha never dip the cinnamon roll in the chili - noted! thanks for the comment, i assumed based on the other comments that it was mostly a school lunch thing. guess we'll have to create our own next time we're somewhere that serves both 😎
Thanks for showing 💕 to my city, Crown Town, KCMO! Everyone come on to KC! 🥰
If you have a great cinnamon roll and great chili, I promise you the two together are mind blowing!
I live in KC. I have never heard of a cheese slipper. Q39 is famous for burnt ends.
Yeah i have lived near kcmo all my life and have never heard of them together. While you guys were talking about it. I was like the server and like what?! Lol definitely must be a Kansas thing lol
I grew up in a small town in northwest Iowa and we had chili and cinnamon rolls for lunch every Thursday.
Coming from Texas, Kansas City is definitely my favorite city I have been to in America. And I believe cinnamon rolls and chili is more of an Ohio thing... Could be wrong though.
Yea - KC is great! Someone else commented that it is a Kansas thing... but I think you're also right about Ohio.
As a lifetime Kansas Citian, I definitely recall cinnamon rolls and chili together in public school lunches, but I've never encountered the pairing as an adult.
Crossroads is dead before like 6-8pm. Everyone passed out from Friday night XD
Y'all hit Joes, which is top notch, but there is one on the Kansas side in the suburbs called Blind Box BBQ and it is a heavy contender.
All the BBQ looked tasty but I really want to try a mochi donut!😄
They were so good! Worth going to KC for by themselves... but also the bbq 🙌
Lol I've lived in Kansas City 36 years and ive never heard of a cheese sliver!! You learn something new every day.
I sure had fun there. I need to go back!
KANSAS CITY IS AMAZING! Yes has the nicest people!!
Chili with peanut butter sandwiches?? That's amazing!
Great video! It's much appreciated because people are traveling to KC more than ever. Especially in 2026 when we'll host World Cup matches.
Joe's, Slaps, Jack Stacks and Famous Daves🔥🔥🔥

Hello. Are you back to America? Food looks delicious. Thanks. See you.
Hello Hyde :) Yes, we've been in the US for over a month now. Our videos are super behind 🙈 But this weekend we continue posting the Sri Lanka videos!
Fair enough, but we went to the places our neighbors and hosts recommended to us. I guess Arthur Bryants will be for next time.
Good work.
@@darrellhornick7764how is Joes in a gas station considered fancy? And it’s been there 34 years.
@@joelamaro4525 it’s not an OG. It’s considered a new restaurant. Not a BBQ joint.
Thoughts:
1. I have lived in KC my whole life but have never heard the term “cheese slipper” 😅
