  • In this video we take a look at making a DIY bow press with only a pipe clamp and a few blocks of wood. This is a cheap alternative to having to take a trip to the bow shop, and at the same time learning how to work on your own bow.

You could install pvc pipe inside the hole in the wood so it would slide very easy on the metal

Works Awesome! I added a couple of parachute cord safety lines from the bar tied up around the riser and back to the bar. One on each end of the riser. This ensures the bow can’t rise up and out while under tension. My bow is a past parallel limbed bow. Obsession DEFCON M6Z. Thanks for this video!

As a carpenter using a sash clamp cheap and like yours works absolutely fine.

Just a thought you might use some zip ties to hold your wooden blocks against your pipe clamp that would help the blocks to move more freely and keep them tight against the bar clamp. Plus easy to remove in case you had two different bows with two different sets of blocks.

No need for grease... Rub some candle wax in the hole, that will lubricate and stop the pipe/wood sticking.
    Less messy too

What a great project! Been needing a press at home for some time now. It looks like I will be building one of these this weekend. I already have some pipe clamps and lumber around the place, so cost will not be a factor. Thinking about building mine with hardwood (Maple, Red Oak, etc.).
If I do this, I will let you know how it works out for me.

Not a bad idea to use some long screws - across the grain of the 2Xs (keep the wood from splitting). Too, use some grease so the wood doesn't bind on the pipe.

Great idea and thank you for creating the video! I think I will build one as I already have the pipe clamps. I may make one or modification...I'll make the end blocks twice the thickness where the pipe passes through to help minimize any binding and use use your grease idea. Another thought is to try and find a 3/4" ID teflon insert or determine if 3/4" ID schedule 40 PVC (as suggested below) for the pipe to smoothly slide through will work.

The way pressure is computed there would only be 45 pounds of inward pressure to equal 60 pounds of vertical pull on the string, so 45 pounds of pressure about half on each 2X4. That build should be fine for a 300 pound bow press.

Great video! What is the length of the upright 2x4 piece? And the depth and width of the cam gap? Thanks

I just had a thought and not sure it would even work. Could you use a square hinge like the doors in our homes use but to be safer, a larger size? It would be mounted on the clamp adjusted end?? I’m not a designer so, guys be gentle please.😁 I’m my thoughts, make the base or rather use the press on a table where you can clamp the uprights down and then the hinge would swing/open like the door does but in this idea the hinge Wouk be oriented with the hinge pin would be laying horizontal. Is this a doable idea?

Would you be able to remove the whole cam with this press? Looking to change my Mathews top hats

Once you uncouple the string and cables you can take the bow out of the press and remove cams, limbs, whatever.

It works just wish you would have given the dimensions and show you changing the string/cable. Thanks!

Guy with Bear Archery (Fred Bear) USA $500 - $800 bow has Last Chance EZ Green bow press and uses it all the time. Guy with $1,200 - $2,000 Bowtech, Hoyt, Mathews rigs up some jankyass contraption that isn't even safe to use out of junk pine 2x4s. Even if somehow you were to make this safe and reliable by adding some modifications for anchoring the bow so it doesn't go springing and shooting up/out, you should have used hardwood like oak, ash, hickory. Those pine 2x4s can easily split and splinter breaking off notched like that. Take a hammer and tap one of those ears to see how easily and lightly they need to be hit before they break off. It won't take much to do it, so that is what you are relying on to hold your $2,000 bow in place.

I deleted my previous comment because thanks to predictive spelling, and my rush to send it, and get on the road, I didn’t proof read it. So many errors in that that when I read it just a moment ago, it sounded like I was negative about the press, when in fact, it was the total opposite from what I thought I had typed out. I apologize to everyone for MY screw up and especially to this guy.
I do have a couple of things 6:16 to say however. One, I am colorblind and the vast majority of the video IN THE BEGINNING, I couldn’t see the bow or even which way it is oriented. It’s because, the background with the dark wall thing and the bow blends so thoroughly, I didn’t even see the bow at first. I never did see the cams or clearance until you started doing the close ups and used your fingers to sorta guide my eyes accordingly. Now yet again, this is my problem, and NOTHING you did wrong. Just maybe keep that itty bitty thought in your mind in the future. Now on to the second most important thought. THANK YOU for doing this video. From what I can see, you did a really incredible job in making it very understandable and easy to follow. I for one appreciate this greatly. Keep up the good stuff.👍🏼👍🏼
