Mahalo for showing us. Nice to have the perspective of what we saw and the formation of that landscape to apply to other lava expanses. I spent quite a bit of time over 2 years in the same area out by the airport harvesting lava rock and trying to visualize what happened. I never thought I had much clue then and I know I will be viewing old lava flows now with a far greater education, understanding what I'm seeing. And far greater appreciation. Thanks for a good deal to you.
I think now in fact seeing the cooled lava River/flow in every bit as much awe and animazement as when raging. Fluid Rock is mind-boggling in concept, even more so having actually SEEN it moving fluidly and now having slowed and cooled into rock.
Not literally seen of course but you have done a very impressive illustration or approximation of it live. And for all the disadvantages of living with a volcano eruption event there is something truly magnificent about able to literally see it. See it evolve… over seemingly endless days. Wish that I could have. So Mahalo Scott for your having done it for me and
    WELL DONE!

Vast, desolate, and very humbling. The transformation of once lush, beautiful landscape is simply astounding. The lone tree boldly screams, “life.” Awesome, awesome video!

After listening to Charles’ report on Doing Hawaii this morning, I’m grateful you aren’t going any closer. He wasn’t trying to scare us, just read the official report. For novices like me, I didn’t even think that if there is another event, it could actually open in a brand new Fissure! I think these reports are for novices like me. I can see the heat waves. That solitary tree is neat. Lifting us up to see the river bank was interesting. Thank you so much.

I think director Ridley Scott would be impressed of the footage, it's so foreboding and Alien. Skeletal trees, shimmering heatwaves and steam rising across a weird folded and splintered ruinous landscape, crunchy underfoot. Thank you, all the best and stay safe.

Boy, that necklace of fissures and fumaroles is impressive and humbling! It's certainly easy for me to nderstnd why the USGS and HVO are continuing to advise caution and making no reassuring promises at this time. BUT! If I could be that close to all the recent action I fear my own lifetime fascination and loving embrace of Mother Earth/Pel e's Kali like fire and fury would have me walking shotgun with you out there, too! Scot, you are a moth to flame as am I and I sure appreciate you taking me with you this morning : )

Things were really steaming this morning. It was cool how you lifted us up to see down into the river channel without getting perilously close to the edge yourself. Well done and wise! But you kept telling us you were being safe and here's more evidence of that. It was also cool seeing the heat waves. Nice update from there. Mahalo from Marlea in GA.

Good morning Scott. What devastation, Pele has certainly left you something to remember her by. I hope she is now in a more friendly frame of mind. The shimmering waves of heat still radiating from the lava river shows that there is still a long way to go before it can be fully explored and the steam from the vents including Big Daddy is certainly an impressive sight. Thank you so much for giving us such close up views. It's definitely worth your efforts and much appreciated by me.

Ohh Wow! That's just beautiful Scott! I can't thank you enough for going out there and letting us see the dried up river as you say! Lol. No one is showing this stuff like this. I know its probably boring and nothing to you and maybe others, but I think its beautiful and amazing still....Please don't stop showing us videos like this. Maybe no changes but it is really. Its not red, or glowing n moving fast but its still dried up, on top. Thank you once again. You mught need to give Peter a call and check on him....😢 But, for now, Aloha 🙏❤🌴😞😀

Excellent footage, Scott! Hopefully you don't get any trouble from going up there, but Mahalo for showing it to us.
Your caution is well-considered in staying back from the edge. Someone posted some drone footage last week of a dried-out side channel, and the edges were littered with collapses, undercuts, and bubbles that could go down at any time.

It's just amazing how deep and wide the channel is now that a good deal of the lave drained away. I thought it was only 10 or so feet deep, but from your video and the USGS you can see that in places it was 15, 20, may in some places 30 feet deep and hundreds of feet wide. Just amazing that so much material was flowing so quickly down the channel. Thanks again. Also love the chats as always and the tours. Special love for Mauna Kea 9200 foot level.

That's really cool, Scott! You're actually up near the edge of the lava river!! Can you believe it? Wow! When you lifted us up to see, I could really see where the edge dipped down to the riverbed. And the river was awesome and so wide! Your camera shows great details in the rocks and shows great definition of the walls and how deep the top of the river is. Remember when the lava was raging and how high it was? It looked as if it would overflow? Well, it did in some areas, but now that it's all dried up, it's amazing that you are standing so close to it! Sorry there's no lava fish for you to catch. Lol Boy, it's just something else. That lone tree still stands as if in victory of surviving. Wouldn't it be neat to fly the American flag from it? I think I like that tree, too. It symbolizes being strong and victorious! Yes, it does. When i lived in Iowa, there was a small town called Lone Tree. A quaint little town. Never saw a tree by itself there, though. This tree just reminded me of my time in Iowa. Anyhoo, there are some pretty colors in the sky. I see blues and lavenders. Very pastel and subtle, but pretty. I'm also loving the billowy clouds of the steam. Thanks, Scott, for trekking out there! Makes me a little nervous, but I know you're very careful. An amazing sight to see! Yes, very surreal. Mahalo! :-)

    Primeval.
Good to see that, if it does all start pumping out from there again, there's a substantial height from bank to bed which can contain any new flow, at least in that section. Some were concerned that the banks would be shallow and a resumption would easily overflow.
