I've done a re-foam before on an old sub, it was pretty hard to keep the voice coil center but once I finished it sounded how it did when I first got it.
To add to this , subwoofer sag. Usually happens after many years of use. Soft parts become weak an cause the woofer to sag. This con also cause failure as the woofer no longer has the stability of new non worn parts. Ive also seen this with subs that have sat in the same position for a long period of time (years).
Surround kits exist, and I've replaced many. The problem with newer subs is stitched surrounds as it's not only a pain to remove, but sometimes cutting them and removing them damages the cone. The centering of the voice coil when gluing a new one down is done with things like sheets of paper, business cards (my favorite) or special made centering rings. Dust cap has to come off, but you're gluing a major mechanical part of the moving assembly, it's better to reglue the cap down than risk coil damage from a skewed spider/surround alignment.
Good grief... Back in the day we were happy with a pair of 12s on a 200w amp! We would boom around town all day with a smile! Now we need a 12 on 2k? I'll leave that to the kids getting tickets 😆!
I remember using house speakers, just throwing the cabinet in the trunk and hooking them up to the tape deck in the dash that had 6 wires a power, ground and 4 speaker leads. I love the system I have in my car these days and the technology is awesome, but I miss those days....
I know im little behind but ive been itching lately ...bass itching hah !!! You said it perfectly, i have a zv5 on a 2k cab that I bought five years ago n shelved em but a month into it and I either need more power or another sub and more power hah !!!
I have two Gen 2 Rockford P3 12's they have to be at least 10+yrs old by now. The surrounds are starting to get small cracks but otherwise they are fine. The spider is very soft I am not sure if it's from so much wear or if it was designed that way.
I have the gen 1 p3s from the year 2000 they still rock but there 10s but there dual 4 10s and I also use my daily Rockford power hx2 12s in my daily from the year 2001 I got my purchased them new from circuit city back in the day those subs slam
bro once its info and people willing to learn, thy will listen. As well when you are explaining in ABC form is good. For those who don't want to take time to learn they not ready yet. main thig too is every video on TH-cam has the amount of time before watching. so if there is any complains here is not for them. Nope your wrong. Anything can be redone just won’t have stitching after it being redone. They are 2 types of landings on a cone and you can cut the stitching pull the string and resurround.
2:16 refoaming kits are a thing, but they are mostly only for home audio speakers that have glued surrounds. I've used a few on some old bookshelf speakers that I had from the 90s. but on a big ass sub with 50mm+ of xmax they won't cut it.
I can confirm that it won't sound as loud. I had 4 12s was sponsored by a shop but after a week or two I told the boss it isn't as loud and he laughed and said it's cuz your going deaf...I have had dust caps come off the coil scratch and tinsel leads separate from the woofer cone. I would say if your a bass head long enough you will experience some or all of these failures. Currently I run 2 rockford fosgate t2d2 12s 1200rms subs @2ohm off a rockford fosgate t2500bdcp this is a happy setup amp pushes up to 3500 watts rms and subs have been rocking going on 6 years now. Gotta plan your setupand appropriately match amp power to sub rated power and enjoyment will follow for many years
Man I've had MANY systems and probably about 20 pairs of subs in my life, never damaged a single sub. But I have never overpowered a sub. Biggest amp I've ever needed was 500w. I do have a 1500w amp but it's in the house on 4 12s!
I think people are asking about just a refoam because it's common on vintage speakers to just replace the foam and nothing else. Of course high powered subwoofers it's a different ballgame.
The foam kit they sell them on simply speaker website C Vega orange foam kit most popular speaker that rebuilt and probably infinity subs. It's a common problem in home audio that not used much that aren't abused. 👍👌✌️💯🎶🍻🥂
Hey JP I bought some sundown audio GT-R1 tweeters from you with some D4S bass blockers. I keep burning out the bass blockers. Is their a better one you sell or what else can I run that can handle the power ?
I've had my Orion xtr2 12's one my ex wife put a hole in....the other still works and they are old as dirt lol well I've had them since 2002 the coil is slowly looking ruff. Idk about my soundqubed I don't think they will last as long
All this stuff about re-foaming is kinda like wtf 😳 🤣 re-foaming had been around for ever. Mainly for example I re-foamed my old 1997 JL audio 15w6v1s you cannot find original parts for those woofers. You can find a coil or spider assembly that is close but it will not be spot on. And no re-foaming isn’t “mainly” for home Audio either. Ppl re-foam door speakers. Subwoofers literally any speaker can be re-foamed. The reason it had been fazed out is bc manufacturers would rather go with a double stitched surround. Which is a upgrade over just normal ca glue. But The silver lining to that is typically just replacing the whole assembly rather than the foam. Also most manufacturers have upgraded the materials used for the surrounds. Trust me folks your sundown or skar or what ever you run atm more than likely isn’t using regular foam. Atleast it won’t start to deteriorate for 10 plus years. Hope this helps clear the air about re-foaming. Plz don’t murder me to hard in the comments👍
My magnet gets really hot 🔥 on my deafbonce 3012 😪😪.. & I'm only pushing 2k watts on it & it's inverted .. when the deep bass hit it sounds like there's a air leak ( meaning like the woofers loosen the bolts around the enclosure , but that's not the case..) magnet gets extremely 🔥 hot i really think it's a defect coil.. I went ahead & ordered a recone kit .. I'm just pissed maybe @ myself because I'm a DIY person and want to believe it's an error on my part during tuning.. trust me if it was a 700$ or more woofer I would've reached out to u or deafbounce asap..
so my car gets used to the vibrating aswell? the first one is BS for me tho, cuz sometimes my shit be shaking, other times it wont be as shaky as it was before
I'm running four subs, and when bass hits or music is up one sub makes a loud screeching pop noise, something u explained does that mean my sub going bad??
Okay so I just bought a brand new sundown audio u series 12 and used it for a bit, now it’s sounds worse like a rattling ive narrowed it down to being the sun and I have no idea why it sounds like this now
Bs prince im running 2 Rockford power hx2 dual 2s from 2000 and there still going strong been in my daily’s since I had em I swear they still look new and there still stiff
Thanks for this info. Even though I purchased a Skar Set up for my vehicle lil more than a year ago that I kept for maybe 2weeks. I really appreciate the info you put out. Since then I've upgraded to Def bonce and Sun Down Subs. I love what my vehicle sounds like. My JP23 Is Beast Mode. People can't believe I only have 2 !0's. Unfortunately my Deaf Bonce AHL-300.4 has one channel that is bad that run my Mids. Not sure if that is fixable but i have Bridged those speakers to share a channel. Next year i will probably upgrade. Not sure what your shop will have to offer but I know I will be returning.
I've got a JL W6 from well over a decade ago (but it's only been played minimally for the last 5 years), and it definitely has its limitations. It bottoms out sometimes even though it's a clean signal, a class D amp (JL 900.5) tuned properly, and the source audio is high quality (320kbps). The sub RMS is 375w and 1200w peak, and I'm only putting about 4-500w to it. I guess it's showing its age? Dunno really
Got the avatar stu 12 from d4s to replace the sub i had but didn't think bout the box n the skar pre fab I have is to small need a 2 cubic ft box please help #basshead fam
Okay I understand the bass bug but let's say I have two identical set up both in the same space same song same box but one has set has more bass then the other it doesn't sound quite the same but there nothing that sounds wrong with it either at almost full level. If I change to the other pair of the same sub I have of the same style and age it sounds lower tone of bass. There all still from factory. I seem a little strange that I can't find any wrong besides a little bit less bass. 🤔👍✌️👌💯 🎶🍻 The only difference is the set that sounds great has been used the hole time and the other pair with less bass have been stored and not really used but we're broken in slowly not like the first pair. 🤫✌️💯🎶🍻
Hey guys, i just bought a DD 712f (1500 rms) and powering with T1500bdcp. I tuned amp to clipping at volume 30. But my dumbass installed the sub (in spec box) and immediately turned it to volume 32 with a bass heavy song for about 5 seconds. Coil started smelling (but not really bad like a blown sub, just enough for me to notice it’s getting hot), so I turn the volume down slowly and let it cool. So basically I over powered sub (because Rockfords are underrated) with dirty clipped power. But I’ve been playing it below volume 30 for a few days now and it seems perfectly fine. Should I worry that i lessened the subwoofers life? Or was it the glue on coil “breaking in”? Thanks you guys
So what if they add something like rubber to ease the buttoming. They should design these amps with enough resistance to limit power so it never happens
There will never be a refoam kit even though that would probably fix it and you could glue it just as they did when it was new but the refoam kit would only cost 10 bucks, a recone kit makes them a lot more money
I used to refoam subwoofers all the time. What do you mean you've never seen anyone put a new surround on? For $18 I can put new surrounds on 2 12" subwoofers. If it's torn or deteriorated it doesn't need a new cone or voice coil 😂
Oh bro these DB drive 12s I got this dudes psycho girlfriend stabbed the dust caps but there covered in e6000 look like shit but sound perfect doesn't effect the sound I'm gonna get new dust caps there cheap
You forgot the number one reason why people think their sub doesn’t hit as hard as it used to, cause the electrical system is not supplying the load the amp and sub need. Your alternator is not putting out enough amps and the batteries are drained.
I've done a re-foam before on an old sub, it was pretty hard to keep the voice coil center but once I finished it sounded how it did when I first got it.
Bro don't care about the length of the video I like learning and the longer the video the more info i get so keep the on the good work

I replaced surrounds years ago at a stereo repair shop I worked for. Kits are out there.
1:38 gotta ride with the bass lowered for a while to resensatize yourself to the bass.
Honestly might need to try this 🤣

56k modems used to be fast.

@@jdmaddict77 I'm right there with you.
I have a 15 on 5000 watts I'm very happy with it and tbh I don't want any louder my ears hurt as is

My buddy just told me today he wants to upgrade because the bass isn't as loud to him. Meanwhile, I sit in there and it's Messing with my breathing. 😄
that zv6 looks huge!!!!
cannot wait to order one in the future
That bass bug…is the reason ive gone through 4 different brands😂😂😂
You can still buy reforming kits for a lot of speakers and subwoofers I've done a ton of them sometimes that's all I need if they weren't abused

You can buy new surrounds for vega subs, or at least you used to be able to
A short internet search will reveal subwoofer parts are pretty cheap and easy to get!
When you see stitching around the surround you won't be able to re-foam it properly without doing the entire cone.
Nope your wrong. Anything can be redone just won’t have stitching after it being redone. They are 2 types of landings on a cone and you can cut the stitching pull the string and resurround.
Look at springfield audio...
It can be done, it's not hard to do, I did a few of them

My sa v2 started clicking, so i had it reconed and its still clicking exactly the same so I bought the d4s box with 2 12 sa classic 😂

He runs sundown. He has plenty videos of his setup/demos

Its not that you got used to the bass. It's more because you lost some hearing.
Jp man whats the issue with u and american bass you opinion matter when i run your amps
So I would have 2 get a complete recone kit....okay then
that damn bass bug (cost me thousands)
Is it bad if there’s smoke coming from your subwoofer😂
LOOK AFTER YOUR STUFF IT WILL LOOK AFTER YOU
Its good info though
No if it cracks and more recone the sub lol u cant refoam one
Any cbd advertising gets automatically thumbs down 😊

I’ll take that blown zv6 off your hands jp😂

Bitten.
I had to change mines 3 times already... it's an addiction... guilty..
Thanks my bass head brother.
You forgot the number one reason why people think their sub doesn’t hit as hard as it used to, cause the electrical system is not supplying the load the amp and sub need. Your alternator is not putting out enough amps and the batteries are drained.
