Senna vs Prost 3D Reconstruction - F1 Japan 1989

  • One of the most infamous accidents in Formula 1 history, now in 3D.
    Enjoy the crashalong!
    Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost came together late in the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix. After losing the lead at the start, this championship defining crash looked like Senna trying a desperate late-braking overtake. But Prost might be more to blame for the crash. And by carefully recreating this accident in 3D, it can finally be seen from more angles.
    However, the main story behind this crash follows after the race. Senna is disqualified from illegally re-entering the track, meaning Prost wins the championship with a DNF. A controversial decision that reminiscent to the F1 2022 season finale between Hamilton and Verstappen at Abu Dhabi.

    The crash that would have been happened, IF Senna had not been able to make the corner, this one yes would be Senna's fault. This is called "Futurology".
    The crash we're talking about, in question, is the one who actually happened and it was 100% intentional by Prost. (Just remembering that Senna did EXACTLY the same maneuver on Nannini a few laps later. And he did it several times in this same place in different Suzuka GP's, check it out. Clearly, Prost turned into Senna, but judging Senna’s speed into the corner, I think the crash was inevitable even if Prost didn’t turn in. I honestly feel Senna was coming in too fast for that corner, considering that there is a car on the outside..

    • @JaswanthDaniel
      @JaswanthDaniel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @vô Adílio
      No, Prost caused the collision here. He turned in way too early to take that corner…. When there is someone on the inside and almost alongside, you should take long way around the outside. Prost didn’t even try to do that.
      But even if Prost did that correctly, it is very likely that there is still going to be a collision considering the speed senna was carrying in the inside line..

    • @JaswanthDaniel
      @JaswanthDaniel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @vô Adílio
      You mean to say more that 50% of all overtakes in F1 are illegal? That would mean even Lewis was a sitting duck when max overtook him in Abu Dhabi in the last lap. Do you say Max was also a sitting duck when Lewis overtook him in Jeddah last year? Being brave on the brakes is what makes a move possible. There is nothing as such being too late to claim the line.
      Looking at Prost, he would have cut the chicane if senna wasn’t there. Prost turned in way too early to take that corner. It was his mistake.

      @user-xb1ht4py2v ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JaswanthDaniel not sure what you are laughing at. While this will always be a controversial accident, to me at least it was intentional by Prost. If you watch the broadcast video, not this recreation, you can see that after Prost starts the turn, but before he collides with Senna, he would have had to straighten up the car (as in turn a bit to the left) so as not to bounce over the curb on the inside of the turn. This means he turned in either too early, to much, or it was intentional. He was an experienced racer and clearly knew when to turn into the corner. You can watch his previous runs thru the same corner and see the line he took, very close to the ideal line shown in this video. Before the collision he WAS NOT anywhere on the same line and the car is clearly angled in a manner that would take it off the track had Senna not been there. To me this is evidence of an intentional crash in order to take out Senna so as to win the Championship. It worked. There is also evidence of some political BS in F1 as the exact same manuver, continuing down the over-run lane, that caused Senna to be disqulaified for in this race, "not reentering track at point of exit", was made totally legal the following year.

    What happens when both drivers are bitter towards each other, the 1989 championship is on the line, and neither driver is willing to back down! After the crash Senna pitted for a new front wing and came back to win the race, but was disqualified by the FISA (earning 0 points), which made Prost the 1989 Champion. When McLaren appealed the DQ, FISA rejected the appeal, fined Senna $100,000, gave him a suspended ban, and labelled him a dangerous driver! Ouch! In my opinion it was Prost's fault, but I understand he was tired of leaving the door open for Senna to avoid crashes and wanted to win. However, the FISA decision to DQ and fine Senna seemed unfair and harsh. Perhaps poetic justice was served in 1990, when Senna and Prost crashed again at the same track a year later, but Senna won the championship this time! Can't wait for that video one day! Excellent job making this one, well done! 👏👏👏

    • @Crashalong
      @Crashalong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I just called it an escape road because its a common term in racing today. In this case, the road is there because it is an alternative circuit layout, with temporary tire barriers to hamper the path of a driver seeking an advantage. Why Senna was the only driver to get penalized for using it, remains a question that was never answered

    • @martoto77
      @martoto77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Senna was on the middle of the track and was pushed off to the nearest place off the track. If the engine had restarted while they pushed him over to the escape road then he could still have rejoined the race legally. But his engine was still dead after he'd been moved off the track from a dangerous position. Then he got them to push him further into the escape road in order to restart his car and rejoin the track and the race. When the car was pushed off the track and the engine dead, Senna was obligated to retire then and there. Since anything beyond that point was outside assistance other than what was necessary to remove the car from the track. It's strange that they didn't apply this rule instead of the not completing race distance rule. Maybe because he didn't need to go through the escape route except to restart his engine, with assistance.

    The 3D work is amazing, however, just one thought, the angle your chose is more dramatic and cinematic than explanatory. For example, it can be clearer if you had a rear view angle looking directly from the back of Prost's car, so that it could be more clearly seen where exactly Prost is aiming right at the impact.
    And if you could, do the close feature of Prost's cockpit view, and be able to see how Prost's sudden jerk of direction change. Or stay in Senna's cockpit, and possibly experience the entire ovetake of glory & getting cheated out of the race in a few seconds time.
    Just a personal opinion for possible improvements though. I just feel it could do more magic once you created such realistic 3D models.

      You miss the point of the ruling, it wasn't used in emergency, Senna should have spun the car on the spot after getting it started, and re-joined the race from where he left the track, and he would have been fine.
      He was ruled to have re-jojned the circuit in a different place to where he left it, in a non-emergency situation.
      I for one was shocked he got away with being push started, although there was a thin rule that cars could be pushed out of the way if deemed in a dangerous position, and if the driver just happened to take advantage of that .... that's how Patrese got to keep his Monaco win after being push started in 1982.

      Had Prost kept to the racing line, he could've easily done the switchback on Senna who'd have had a very poor exit speed (I think he would've made the corner- but was asking a lot from Prost) but of course nerves got to Prost and Prost deliberately turned into Senna knowing he'd have the "my corner" excuse. It's very similar with the turn 6 incident at Abu Dhabi last year...

      @ADUCKonQUACK Summed it up nicely there I reckon. I would say that I think the move was made to look even more ambitious than it actually was though by Prost braking early. I think similarly Hamilton braking a little early was a factor in Abu Dhabi as well.

    One of the most famous crashes in history because of how much it meant for the championship. I think Prost is partially to blame because of how early he turned for the corner, he would have cut the corner if Senna wasn't there. And Ayrton trying it from so far out puts him as partially at fault however if anyone else was in the same situation they would have done the same.

    Prost did turn in early, it’s clear. But it was also an ‘if you don’t get out the way we’re going to crash’ kind of move from Senna. Ironically it didn’t matter anyway, as Senna crashed into the back of another car in Adelaide, losing a wheel and retiring, so wouldn’t have won the championship even if he had kept this win. A lot of people forget that.

    The dynamic reconstruction of the accident is excellent; however, it only reproduces a piece of what happened.
    I repeat, the dynamic reconstruction is almost perfect and clearly shows that Prost anticipated the closing of the curve by intentionally bumping into Senna; therefore, it would seem that Prost has committed an unfairness.
    But there is another piece of reality that the video does not convey.
    The piece of reality not represented in the video is that Senna, to attempt overtaking, used the pit lane (which could be used EXCLUSIVELY to enter the pits) as a shortcut; he entered the pit lane, thus making fewer meters, and then returned to the track taking advantage of this maneuver.
    It is obvious that Prost, not being a fool, responded to this gross incorrectness of Senna (made with the "cleaver") with the incorrectness described above, that is, anticipating the entry into the curve to lean on the car of the rival who wanted to be smart (let's say Prost responded with an elegant "foil" blow).
    In summary: Prost committed an impropriety in response to Senna's impropriety, acting in "self-defense".
    Congratulations again for the excellent dynamic reproduction of the famous accident!

    The problem with this incident is, we can't just judge this on it's own merits. The incident happened originally because Senna was fond of putting his car in places where he would either get through or there would be a crash. Prost had seen this too many times from his point of view and had had enough.
    The second thing is Senna rejoining the track. Whilst it is true he couldn't do anything else it has been suggested there was a Marshall with a flag on the exit of the chicane and he simply drove past him without permission hence causing his disqualification. It's a suggestion only
    The third and final point is that Senna could still have won the drivers championship that year in the next round after Prost had retired but then rammed Martin Brundle up the back
