Newspapers, TV, radio, magazines all fulfilled the role of TH-cam and Twitter. The only thing Facebook and Twitter have achieved is to allow non-famous people like you and me to make ourselves heard. The fact that Senna was 1.7 seconds faster in qualifying means absolutely nothing. Alain knew that Senna would mostly beat him in qualifying, therefore did enough to get second. Makes no difference if a tenth slower or 1.7 seconds slower, as long as faster then third Alain still started in the same spot. Do you understand? Alain sure as hell did, as does anybody else with even moderate intelligence. There is absolutely no proof that either Senna or Alain were on the limit in qualifying, so your 1.7 seconds faster dribble has no relevance.
Given the importance of the race, once it started one can be almost certain that both drivers were absolutely on the limit, Alain trying to increase the gap, and Senna desperately trying to close it. This shows the real gap between the two was nothing like the qualifying gap. Sometimes it pays to be your own man and look at things in a skeptical way, making your own decisions instead of simply repeating the same dribble that you have read so many times you now firmly believe it and know of by heart. You think Senna was better, that’s fine. You don’t have to try to explain to readers why. I didn’t rely on statistics to decide which driver I liked better, and I doubt you did either.

Formula 1 is alive today because of its heros; and, Alain Prost & Ayrton Senna were one of them.
Without Senna, Alain would have wrote every record in the book.
But becoz they could beat each other, they will be remembered for forever.
I am with team Senna-Prost- the greatest rivalry ever till date.

The camera view at 1:17 shows, without a doubt, that Prost turned into Senna's car. He never went for the corner. Look closely: at 1:18 Prost starts to turn in. At 1:19 they crash... but the corner's apex is not even in the shot yet. Now look at the skid marks left from Prost's car when they made contact... they start WAYYY behind the corner's apex, meaning that he turned in way too early. You also can't say it was a mistake... he turned in so early that he would cut the corner through the grass. Not a chance. Play through 1:17s to 1:20s frame by frame hitting the pause button... you'll see what I'm talking about.

@Denis Valjean Grid positions in Suzuka weren’t changed in 1989 or 1990 but in 1991. Before that EVERY pole setter in Suzuka had to start on the inside. It was NOT changed by Ballestre. Search for pictures or videos of the starts in 1987 (Berger on pole), 1988 (Senna), 1989 (Senna), 1990 (Senna) and 1991 (Berger). It was changed in 1991 and Senna’s criticism that it is unfair for the pole setter to be on the less grippy side (which is true). So Balestre changed it because of Senna. Ironically Senna qualified only in 2nd for the 1991 race, which meant he had to start on the dirty side once again. Prost scored more points than Senna in both their seasons as teammates, but lost in 88 because of the points drop rule. Prost actually beat every single one of his teammates at least once after his rookie season.

If you pause the video around 1:18 to 1:20 you can see that Prost caused the collision by moving his car towards the grass. Let's put it this way, if Senna wasn't there he wouldn't have moved his car THAT early because that's not the racing line. He knew a collision would make him the '89 champion so he didn't really care. As much as I admire Prost because he was a superb driver and a legend of the sport, he was wrong and should have behaved as a sportsman. Why didn't he 'close the door' earlier? Why wasn't he on the inside line? It was way too late to move the car and he only did because he knew Senna wouldn't break, he wouldn't have time anyway and a collision would give him the title.
