  • 3D Crash animation of Sophia Floersch accident in the Lisboa corner at the Guia City Circuit in Macau, involving Sho Tsuboi and Jehan Daruvala. The Macau Grand Prix is a standalone FIA Formula 3 World Cup event and took place in 2018 on the 18th of November.
    Exclusive extra content: / crashalong
    This was one of the worst looking accidents in years recent racing. The live feed never showed replays of the accident, but a lot of videos from the crowd showed various bits of the crash, but no single continues recording exists of the full incident. Now, 3 years after the accident, I can show you this in a 3D reconstruction of the crash to see it from unique angles, based on all available footage.
    In some ways, it feels similar to Romain Grosjean's 2020 Bahrain GP accident in F1. In this case the roll hoop was key in protecting Sophia Flörsch from the guardrail. The manner in which the crash started was also very similar to Alonso's big accident in Australia 2016. There, it was the grass-gravel crossover that made Fernando go flying. Here it is the blue sausage kerb that lifts Flörsch in the air and Tsuboi acts as an extra ramp. His head is narrowly missed and apart from the drivers, everybody behind the fence is lucky to escape without bigger injuries. Do you think sausage kerbs like this should be reconsidered? I'm glad there are no weird kerbs in tonight's 2021 Formula 1 SaudiArabianGP at Jeddah ;)

      Great work! That animation was awesome! Thank goodness that Sophia is okay. But again, very very scary crash. The crash reminds me of that horrific crash at Silverstone when Max got thrown right to the barrier which it could’ve killed him if the halo isn’t there. If Verstappen had touched Hamilton and got into the air and hit the fence, he could be injured. But I’m glad that it didn’t happen. And that is when Max will say. I’m very happy that the halo was there for me. Good thing that it saved my life. So that crash was horrendous to watch. The halo could’ve saved Sophia’s life if it was introduced in this sport. Again, mega work!

    This crash shows two things: One, it shows just how vital it is that the halo, or some form of it NEEDS to be on all open-wheel single-seaters. Two: It's yet another example of why we need to think of a better alternative to Sausage Kerbs. I imagine had it not been there she would have slammed into Tsuboi yes, but they would have just impacted the tire barrier, and Floersch likely wouldn't have left the circuit.

    • @ventisette.
      @ventisette. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      If anything it shows how important the safety advancements before the halo (high cockpit sides, tougher roll bars) were. Sausage kerbs need to disappear. On purpose-built tracks they have even less reason to exist, just bring the fucking gravel traps back.

    • @NolanRempel

      I aggree with your first point.
      Regarding your second point, i disaggree. If Flörsch slammed sideways into Tsuboi, he could have suffered severe injuries due to the side impact on his car by the rear of Flörschs car at this speed and the occurring deceleration and energy. But yeah, sausage kerbs can be a big danger if placed wrong.

      @@ventisette. I think it shows both things, although at the same time I have the feeling that this particular accident could have been worse with halos involved. Without them, Sophia's car was already launched off track, where would her car have gone if it had to go over the halo? At least we can agree those kerbs should be avoided, can't they just use sensors to detect off tracks?

    Ok, so I didn't know anything about this crash so I firstly watched the real videoclip and HOLY SHIT, that was really scary. I can't believe no one died from that, even after seeing your reconstruction where I discover that Tsuboi almost was decapitated, the photographer and the marshall were hit by the fence pushed by a object going at +150km/h and the other photographer was hit by the guardrail.
    As for the video, it is as always really good, showing as a detailed replay with all sorts of angles.

      f.e. no yellow flags shown, even tho the subtitle mentioned it,
      and sophia was holding the steering wheel the whole time, which we know she didn't - as soon as she realized she lost the car she let go of it.

    Wow, this video has absolutely insane production value!
    That being said, in aviation, there's the "swiss-cheese-model" to explain why a planecrash happened. It's a visualization of layers of safety features lined up, every layer has holes, that are usually blocked by the next layer, but sometimes several layers stack in a way that a "hole" goes through all safety layers, that's when a planecrash happens.
    I feel like this crash is the exact opposite - everything lined up perfectly, so no one died. Flörsch hit Tsuboi in just the right way to not injure him terribly. Her car struck the fence (and no person directly) in such a way that no one was killed. She struck that booth in just the right way to not get killed herself. Also, no one inside (or behind) the booth was injured in a way to be lethal.
    It's insanely lucky. Had that been a place for a grandstand, it could have been like Le Mans '55.

      @@h.a.9880@h.a.9880 I mean it's amazing that no one died, but at least a few of the layers at work here were dumb luck, not safety precautions. The cars didn't have a halo, nowadays they do, and the sausage curb unnecessarily lifted the car above the other cars' crash structure and above the trackside barrier

    • @h.a.9880
      @h.a.9880 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@__-vb3ht Absolutely, it's just very fortunate that everything else (like the positions of the people behind the fence) just so happened to be outside the areas where they would have been crushed by the car.
      This could have become one of open-wheel racing's most devastating moments with a loss of many lives, but it didn't. Some precautions worked (like the construction of the car) others didn't, like the sausage kerb.

      @@h.a.9880 @h.a.9880 Yes, it's fortunate that there are such potentially devastating but practically lucky accidents that can point towards safety issues without anyone actually dying. • @justmy-profilename
      @justmy-profilename 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would fully agree if you hadn't used the word "probably" 😉
      Because the probability of this accident not turning really bad was small, in other words there was a lot of luck. E.g. just a tiny deviation of Sophia's car would have been enough to hit Daruvala's head, which certainly would have been worse than an direct side-impact in the crash structure of his car. Marshalls, Photographers and Spectators are also by a huge margin safer if cars don't get airborne.
      These sausage kerbs are a costly lottery, they may help sometimes a bit, but at other occasions they are literally ramping up the risk.
      Many thanks to the crashalong channel for providing such a great opportunity to see all the little details which matter!

    • @Crashalong
      @Crashalong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are asking the right questions.
      I think it is still one of the most efficient ways to prevent corner cutting. Lower racing series might not have stewards watching every overtake, so there needs to be a fair method to prevent illegal overtakes. But I agree that the FIA grade circuits could definitely put some money in finding better solutions.

    • @fhz3062
      @fhz3062 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saussage kerbs are a paradox on its own. For safety, many areas around tracks that were grass or gravel (or mud?) were replaced by asphalted areas. like Paul Riccard, France. Asphalted are more safe because cars going through it are less likely to spin, flip over, lose control and crash overall. Then, someone very smart (irony) noticed drivers could take an unfair advantage while overtaking of in qualification laps. The solution was to add sausage kerbs as a way to punish whoever tries to take this advantage, by losing time, or even wrecking the car a little bit if it crosses on slow speed.
      The huge paradox comes when many accidents were much more dangerous just because uncontrollable high speed cars hit sausage kerbs and are launched into the air. Even low speed accidents like Verstappen and Hamilton in Monza 2021 shows how a simple crash could have turned into a fatal accident if it weren't halo and thousand of security measures taken over the years.

    Very impressive for me to see her drive so well and confident around Macau just 5 Years later cruising to a P11 finish after making up a couple of positions (arguably some because a guy in front drove into the wall :D and the race had to even finish under a SC) in a field packed with many talented drivers with some of them being fromer winners at Macao.
    Either way even if she didnt finish or came in last I just feel its so impessive how she didnt let her past impact her. I think many people would have just stopped racing after such an incident or at very least wouldnt go out of their way to start at macao again. (It's not an official F3 race so she didnt have to be there, e.g. some other drivers in todays GP drive indycar instead or are F2 drivers).
    So yeah props to her strong mental state. I really hope she can become the first woman to actually achieve something meaningful in modern racing after she managed to be the first woman to get any points in an F3 race this season.

      I've seen it again now and put it higher up the shortlist. The fact that it remains the highest measured amount of G's, makes it interesting to compare to other incidents now. Due to the insane spin after the hit, I wonder if the location of the data recorder has anything to do with it
