    Just started watching, but I own a DZO 20-70 T2.9 for my Pocket 4k and it's my favorite lens. I use it for basically everything! I'm sure these are every bit as good and then some!

    • @IndiDSLR
      @IndiDSLR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And from everything I've heard, you came to the conclusion I expected. They're basically the big brother, full frame equivalent of the lens I own. I typically try to light for an f/4 since I never really want to shoot any lens wide open, but sometimes you want that slight softness so I'm personally glad it's there if I want it.

    The other cine zoom lens in the same price range 5000dolars is the Laowa Ooom 25-100mm at 2.9 is more sharp and has cero focus breathing!!! also has its own expansor from laowa if you want to turn it into a full frame and a rear anamorphic adaptor from laowa too!

    @mrhobs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well I’m the beginning filmmaker you described, wanting to buy my first set of cinema zoom lenses... but went ahead and bought these. (Before watching this video though.)
    Here’s hoping I can use them on pretty much all my projects even with all that extra character. (Aside from parfocal zoom convenience, that’s pretty much the reason I got them; not overly sharp and digital. In fact I plan to use a mild diffusion filter plus filmconvert effects in post, so... if you’re a real artsy fart like me, these might just be perfect.)

  • @johnklein1077
    @johnklein1077 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks, this is exactly the kind of analysis I was looking for. The edge sharpness on a key screen is a dealbreaker for me, so, for as much as I want these lenses to work, they will not for my primary application. Great video though, and these lenses could eventually make it into my inventory for theatrical/music videos for sure.

    While I don't have experience with the EF/PL mounted versions, I rented a MFT 20-70mm for a music video shoot, and I gotta say, I think you hit the nail on the head. A T/2.8 on a MFT sensor is... I wouldn't say hard to work with, but definitely limiting. The fringing in for your commercial shoot though... that's rough. They really are great lenses, definitely have a place in the market, but there are major downsides.
    My team primarily shoots with BMPCC 4k's at the moment, and while we'd ruled out investing in the MFT mount, we were considering the EF.... until we learned that they aren't compatible with speedboosters.
    All that to say, really appreciate your review!

    • @lovefirst6157
      @lovefirst6157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah with mft, I find that T2 or f1.8 is the sweet spot for enough light. What lenses do you guys use, trying to see what lenses I could get

    • @jeremymolinari6597
      @jeremymolinari6597 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lovefirst6157 Our problem was mainly depth of field. At the risk of sounding dramatic, it was the first time I felt personally limited by a lens, haha.
      With the exception of a couple CCTV lenses we have, and our sirui anamorphic lenses, we don't have any native M4/3 lenses, just adapt using speedboosters. Our main workhorses at the moment are Rokinons, but we're in the process of upgrading. I just bought a Contax Zeiss 50mm 1.4, if we like the look we'll probably buy a set. We're also renting a Zeiss CP.3 50mm to test for an upcoming project, depending on how it performs we might look into investing in a set. Once DZO's VESPA line becomes available we'll be considering those as well.
      Total coincidence on the two zeiss's, I'm a big fan of vintage lenses and just happened to find one for a good price, and the CP.3's just seem like a potential good fit for the work we're hoping to do in the future.
      Oh, almost forgot, I'm thinking of looking into SLR magic primes - not their anamorphic, for the love of all that is holy I highly recommend AGAINST their anamorphics, especially the 35mm, at least for M4/3- , the channel Media Division has a great video featuring them that really shows them in a good light. I believe it's the video about lowlight, if you're interested in checking them out.

    • @lovefirst6157
      @lovefirst6157 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeremymolinari6597 yeah media division videos are amazing and it looks like you got a couple of great lens choices. Do you mind telling me what you decide on doing. Also I have a battery grip on my camera so that means I can't use regular cages on my camera, now I want to mount a monitor on my camera and think buying a gimbal side handle a decent alternative. My coldshoe is loose because I used it too much.

    Fair review, howerver, Thomas, here's a direct question for you: I am an amateur filmmaker shooting mostly for fun. So far I have to Canon L photo lenses (16-35 and 24-70) and I slowly started thinking about the cinema lenses. Let's be honest - it doesn't need to be the top quality (so far it's me ruining my shots, not the technics) and mustn't cost a fortune. Quite funny that the very first ELM video I've seen was your "REAL Cine Zoom Lenses FOR CHEAP". Is there a really affordable lens to slowly replace my Canon L lenses? Thank you!
