It’s exciting to finally be in an era of affordable, high-quality cine lenses. I’ve been stocking up on the Meike cine primes and DZOFilm cine zooms for mft, and it’s amazing that there were simply no comparable options for anywhere near the price of those lenses as of just a couple years ago. I also appreciated the inclusion of the Indie Mogul clip with the DP talking about how focus breathing can look cinematic. I get annoyed at lens reviewers frequently treating focus breathing as a universally bad trait that should be avoided at all costs. It’s one of the things I’m least concerned about when shopping for a lens, and it’s something you see all the time in classic films. A great example is the opening sequence of Indiana Jones. Some crazy focus breathing in those shots!
Your ursa mini g2 and these lenses are actually my dream setup. I saw these lenses on ebay like 2 years ago and wanted them ever since. But I never found ANYONE review these till you. This just might tip me over the edge. Ofcourse when I can afford them. Lol great review. And excellent rebuttal. Peor often want perfection whe. Comparing but rarely do they actually just apply applied the specs to their own use. If your even considering this lens, your not worried about focus distance markings. Your probably owner operator never even looking at the lens markings at all. Good job.
I'm rarely motivated to leave a TH-cam comment, but I appreciate this review so much! Every few weeks I check out the Sigma Cine zooms, but probably wouldn't have been ready to pull the trigger for another year or so. Thanks to this review, I may be able to graduate from my Canon EF lenses much sooner than I anticipated. Your channel is perfect for the type of work I do. Keep it up!
I'd love to hear your views on the DZO Pictor s35mm zoom lenses both in terms of resolving 8K and accuracy of lens markings... now, that you have the 12K camera!

Nice video, thanks, hope XEEN will do zoom cinema lenses someday, i use the primes and are fantastic for the price.
Hi there... I watched pt.1 & pt.2, and loved them both. Thanks for reviewing and sharing. What I would like to know is why in either Pt. 1 or 2 the is no mention that once these lenses are purchased: THERE IS NO RETURNING THEM?! Seems like a very important piece of information to me. Not that anyone purchases anything with the intent of returning it, but I still feel that that would/should be mentioned to your viewers !! 🙋🏻♂️😉👍
According to my research, the reason they can be made parfocal is because the original Sigma lens is capable, they just don't worry about the back focus on photo lenses. Cinematics just sets the back focus correctly on a collimator with shims. They will also send you shims with your lens in case its not a Canon camera and a little off (as some are).
Just spoke with the folks over there at Cinematics. As of February 4, 2020, folks in the mainland of China won't be able to get your shipment in Hong Kong as mainlanders have been prohibited to travel to Hong Kong at the moment. So if you ordered directly, maybe you'll get them, but if you are sending them your lens to modify, it's a no go until further notice.

If you purchase from the PCHOOD site, will that come over direct from china (with delay hopefully)? I wont be sending the lens to house, just buy complete off them.
Paul Ross Jones buying is no issue from what I was told. Because they didn’t shut down their eBay store and with ebays terms you have to note delays upfront or if you’re going on vacation and such.
I had to make a pause at your video to congratulate you for that awesome burn at 09:15 you're absolutely right. Awesome way to shut that "purist" guy mouth in such a polite and clever way. You Mr. Have gained a new suscriber.
The focus marks not being accurate seems like something that could definitely be addressed and fixed by Cinematics, but I get the feeling that they are done with the design portion. This can be fixed with as mentioned by someone else in the thread. Also, they should really work on their website, your videos on these lenses put my mind at ease, but I wouldn't have ever considered them after viewing their website without a reputable source telling me it's not a scam. Great channel, I'm subscribed!
Simple solution to mid alined focus marksesssss… Nail varnish tape measure and permanent Sharpie…. DIY Marks on the lens - IF it’s yours… you own it…… Or use a label make to create your own custom scale on the lens… just like we do on focus marking discs… No stress…. Oh thanks for the great videos… love emmm
I'm definitely saving to get these. Was thinking about getting the photo lenses, but since I'm doing more film work, it makes sense to save up and get the cine lenses. Thanks for the review.
Take a look at the Sony CineAlta 4K Six Lens Kit. A lot of DP's compare them to UltraPrimes/Cooke S4’s but at a fraction of the cost. Since they're discontinued it's hard to find but used sets come up once in a while.
Chuchu overall very positive. Only gripe I have is that depending on how backed up the staff is there, the housing may have some jankiness on the front, 114mm diameter like an offset where it should line up with the rest of the lens. Thankfully mine is fine but I have a buddy and he sent it back for them to fix. Overall I prefer these over the sigma cine lenses. Same glass only thing changed is the price and throw of the iris, focus, and zoom.
I know some DOPs that re-click cinema lenses because they prefer having reliable stops to keep things consistent. If I were to get these, I may look at that myself, otherwise, they look like a pretty good option. Either these or the DZO set.
The lens breathing is introduced in these lenses because it is necessary to be parfocal. Correcting the shifting focus-plane when zooming means that an element group is also being “zoomed” when you focus. The Sigma cine versions are NOT parfocal, which is why they don’t have the same focus breathing.
Very very interesting and I am an oldie of 60 wanting to start lol, I guess that with the weight they have , I still need the chepppp ones .... ohhh getting old in this era....so late to start learning such amazing tech :) Best wishes and a great video . Take care , regards to the family from Uruguay :)
I know these lenses aren't the same thing, they are like a cine hybrid zoom but I have the Sony 18-110 and 28-135. They have de-clicked aperture and claim to be par focal (which they almost are). They have focus gears. 95mm front filter mount. But these lenses aren't true cine in that they can do autofocus and have IS. The 28-135 even turning the servo function off still is somewhat connected to it. The 18-110 when servo is off it's like a cine lens. I love that they give me the long focal range I want for a zoom and are incredible clarity. They are around $3k each or so. I was in the same boat as you guys when wanting cine lenses and since I have Sony I thought this was my best option for mid range price. I like to do lots of gimbal work with long lenses without switching at all and this fit the bill for me.
We sold our Sony 28-135 last year when we sold all our Sony gear. But yes, those Sony lenses are fantastic with great features! Wish they could open up past f4, but so many of the Sony cams have great lowlight that f4 still works great in most cases.
@@EpicLightMedia I've contemplated selling all my Sony gear but that's all I have now as I shifted there with these lenses and cameras for the past 5 years and don't want to do the switch of investment. So....just waiting around for Sony to up their game. Though what I have really works for what my clients need. My clients aren't asking beyond what I'm giving them so thinking I'll wait this one more year for Sony and then make a switch if a Sony fs5/7 something upgrade or a7siii doesn't come out. Yes f4 worked perfectly fine for me. Hey also great content as well.
great channel, informative and nicely put across. been looking at these lenses but went for the Fujinon MK series as wanted lightweight glass, no breathing etc plus its a brand ive own before.... always good to look around thou !
Quick question, all the electronics are still intact right? Or do you have to use the gears for everything (zoom, aperture, focus) I have the 18-35 and I use manual focus all the time anyway, however I do enjoy being able to set my aperture in body, and have my camera UI display it. Asking because I am thinking of sending my Lens in to Cinematics and have them convert it for me! Cheers really appreciate the awesome videos. Got me hyped for these
Thanks for your review and follow-up. I like these for the price they can be had for but a little concerned about that focus breathing. Is it significantly less pronounced for the 18-35?
Somebody I watched had a great work around for this by using something like a tilta nucleus I believe, which has a function to increase the focus throw electronically. You could buy these lenses and an electronic follow focus for less than the difference. Not perfect but it's an idea
Brilliant, yes the are trade offs but overall excellent options with very good par focal ability.Man is it really Sigma glass? How do Cinematics do it? Bravo, please upload some more cool footage from these lens.Great video keep up the great work!
Alright so whats your thoughts on these versus DZOFilm Pictor 20 to 55mm T2.8 and the 50 to 125mm? Would you opt for the extra range on each lens in place of the extra light?
Would love to know your thoughts (the new pictors just came out). Looking at buying them or these sigmas you listed. The price difference does not matter between these two. The one thing that seems beneficial with these, is it looks like they still have auto controls? I would not care for auto focus but auto exposure can sometimes be nice to have depending on whats happening. Considering I often run without an Aperture or zoom motor and just a manual focus wheel, I can certainly see the benefits if it does.
@@JakeGleim i have huge interest on that lenses as well, but the image quality, sharpness are way too low than on sigma's, which is priority for me. But i would like to mention that dzofilm pictor both zoom lenses don't have any focus breathing and focus rotation is 270° when cinematics is 120°/ 140°.
@@cineformat6298 they just arrived. They look far better than the sigma (photo versions which these in the video are just rehoused) also added the tokina 11-20 t2.9 they all look stunning together.

Cinematics (PC Hood) can also convert some of those wonderful 'photo lenses from Zeiss, Hasselblad, etc to cinema housings. Their matte box is bulletproof. It's $200 and comes with rings, sock and 4 flags, with twp 4x4 trays.
With a 100% price difference I think it's pretty cheap, and you could always just save up after a few shoots to grab these to get more shoots and charge more 👌
Have these lenses got some kind of adjustable internal shim? Have you shined and checked the Ursa mount? Even my canon CN-E lenses dont line up with the focus marks on my URSA G2 perfectly- I haven't bothered shimming the mount. So maybe its a mount issue? Accuracy it more important at the far end of focus, thats why it might be more off at the infinity end. I am keen on one of the cinematic's canon 70-200 t3 housings. This is one of my favourite lenses, its sharp and blurs beautifully (even nicer IMO than some of the expensive cine lenses I've shot next to), but having it in a proper housing would be amazing.
Call me crazy, but if you want/need accurate distance marks on the lens, maybe just wrap some tape on the barrel and make your own marks? And/or use a calibratable remote focus.
Can i see the difference between normal Canon photo lenses lets say the 24-105 F4/L RF with a cine lens for video ? i can't seem to find any video that shows the image quality difference.
Love this! Never heard of these and have been looking to transition to cine lenses. I’m assuming they still just cover S35 sensors since it’s the same glass correct? I’d also be curious to hear what your thoughts are on the Irix cine lenses that have been coming out for some entry cine primes? Maybe a future video idea for ya!
Novice here - I love the review. Thank you! I was wondering if buying these lenses, and using a new iphone would be a bad idea at all? I'm starting to think it's the lens that make the shot as long as you have a decent camera. Would you please share your thoughts on this?
Great video. I just subscribed. I am shooting my first feature and I need a fast cine zoom solution. I am going to buy these on based on your video. Here is the guy complaining about the inaccurate marks for the zoom distance calculation. Just make a new mark after you measure it. It is not that complicated to do. Thank you buy the ay.
Great video ! So it’s parafocal but does breath ? Damn... that’s a major issue. If I have to choose I would rather have no breathing and no parafocal...
I want to ask you , is sigma 18-35 best lens for bmpcc6k or Rokinon Cine Ds primes or any other lens you can suggest. I am interested in 1) Best overall image quality 2) edge to edge Sharpness 3) minimum Distortion at Wide angels 4) which lens is more sharp at a constant usable aperture like 2.5, rokinon or sigma. I am beginner so I need some help . I want to buy a lens which can use the camera's full potential. Your reply would mean a lot to me
These cine modified lenses might be a great step up alternative to de-clicking and adding focus/aperture gears to still lenses, but I think it is misleading to call these ”rehoused”, as the original lens barrel seem to be retained and encased within the new, albeit geared barrel. But perhaps that is how ”proper” rehousing lens service providers like EE, P+S Technik, Van Diemen, TLS, Cinescope and Cineovision does it too. But I doubt that.
I know the Ursa Mini Pro G2 with a LANC controller can adjust zoom, focus, etc. I am assuming these are not powered Lens and as such would need a powered motor to control them?
Coming back to this after comparing the DZO Pictor zooms, and how you mentioned some abberation and only go to a 2.8, which set would you grab on your way out to a commercial shoot today?
You can you a matte box or circular filters. The 18-35 front thread is smaller than the 50-100. Same threads as photo version although the front diameter is 114 the screw thread part is recessed and directly in front of the glass.
I had the same question. I saw that the 18-35 has a 72 thread and the 50-100 has an 82 thread. Just wanted to be sure the circular filters would still work on these lenses.
I wonder how they got rid of the barrel travel that the photo lens does when focussing. Some lenses increase like 10cm or more. On a cine lens the length has to be fixed. Are these rehoused lenses moving internally? Like the front element moving in and out inside the housing?
Great Video! I am interested in getting my first set of cinema lenses and these look like they may be perfect for me. I am a film student at ASU currently and would love to connect and maybe collaborate on something!
Can I use these on a super 35mm sensor? I own a BM Mini URSA G2. I followed the links you provided, and it say "APS-C frame, not support full frame". But since they are cine lenses, I figured I would ask. Please and Thanks.
@@EpicLightMedia Sorry to bug you one more time. I am about to place the order for the 2 lenses. I saw they are promoted as manual. Does that mean the zoom button on my view finder won't work with the lens? I shoot with the Ursa mini G2.
In their website they cannot guarantee functionality if the lens is adapter for other mounts. Is this something you've researched? Is the lens adaptable for other mounts (eg e mount it m4/3)?
Would it be insane to attach this to a new iphone? I'm new to this so I have no clue. I just don't feel like putting more money into a camera, and instead use it to go into the lens. Another dumb question - 18-35 means you can shoot in 35mm?
it would be impossible to do that, and if you're buying this to attach to an iphone then you relaly don't need this lens because the image is the EXACT same as the still version apart from parafocal + housing
This is the best video I found. I like this. Maybe I am being picky. But just seemed more mellow your an upbeat guy and that shows here too. But some of the others I couldn't get on board with. I've subbed in the hope of a return to this. But I guess you shouldn't just chase after me. 🤣 The breathing on that 50-100 was aweful.
How about comparing directly to photo lenses? I don’t think my Nikon d5300 would even take one of these cinema lenses - not sure how much difference a huge investment in camera/glass would make vs improving lighting, but I’m not sure I can get that deep cinematic look with the stock photo 18-55 Nikor lens, so I won’t know if my lighting is even right when I do hit it, know what I mean?
I would recommend getting the 18-35mm photo version. The f1.8 would help a lot. Now.... I shoot 5.6 or even higher outside sometimes but it’s nice to have the flexibility especially for indoor shooting. It would work great with your apsc sensor.
Well, you can always tape over the distance markings, pre-measure with a tape and write the revised accurate markings back on the tape :)
True old school.
Literally what I was thinking. They say to do this for every shoot with any rented lenses anyways because focus marks can deteriorate
what I was thinking...

Eric Liss the ones had the chip and worked
these lenses look amazing for their price!
Hi. Nice video on the cine lens. However, your provided links don't work anymore. Any alternative ?
Thanks to answer and keep up with the good work.
Bought'em! Will be using on my first feature.
Cinematics (PC Hood) can also convert some of those wonderful 'photo lenses from Zeiss, Hasselblad, etc to cinema housings. Their matte box is bulletproof. It's $200 and comes with rings, sock and 4 flags, with twp 4x4 trays.
how do they compare to the DZO super 35 cinezooms?
clearly our definitions of cheap are different lol
lol
With a 100% price difference I think it's pretty cheap, and you could always just save up after a few shoots to grab these to get more shoots and charge more 👌
Perhaps inexpensive would have been a better word. Although still relative.
Are they parfocal when used on speedbooster on mft camera lika Blackmagic 4k pocket?
No actually!!! I tested them and they are not parfocal unless used on a native mount.
@@EpicLightMedia Thank you so much for this reply!
How is the focal throw? Is there a huge difference pulling focus on these compared to the stills lenses?
Yes it’s much larger than the photo version. There is definitely enough throw for me
Have these lenses got some kind of adjustable internal shim?
That’s actually a good idea.. never thought of that wow
Is there a good way of correcting focus breathing in post?
Great video. I just subscribed. I am shooting my first feature and I need a fast cine zoom solution. I am going to buy these on based on your video. Here is the guy complaining about the inaccurate marks for the zoom distance calculation. Just make a new mark after you measure it. It is not that complicated to do. Thank you buy the ay.
Great video ! So it’s parafocal but does breath ? Damn... that’s a major issue. If I have to choose I would rather have no breathing and no parafocal...
Outstanding series on these lenses. Really.
I want to ask you , is sigma 18-35 best lens for bmpcc6k or Rokinon Cine Ds primes or any other lens you can suggest. I am interested in
1) Best overall image quality
2) edge to edge Sharpness
3) minimum Distortion at Wide angels
4) which lens is more sharp at a constant usable aperture like 2.5, rokinon or sigma.
I am beginner so I need some help . I want to buy a lens which can use the camera's full potential. Your reply would mean a lot to me
I highly recommend the sigma 18-35. It has the speed of a prime but it’s a zoom.
I am primarily shooting with a Fujifilm camera but have a 60D as well. I'd be curious to see how well these lenses would adapt over to a Fuji X mount
Good question actually
Did u alr use it on fuji x mount?? I wanna know thanks ☺️👌
The Pictor zooms just weren’t clean enough for most projects for me. If you want to organic looks they are good though
Does anyone know how these lenses might interact with an EF-E mount adapter and/or a metabones speedbooster EF-E (Super 35)?
How about calibrated focus marks? Are they accurate when focued using a tape measurer? Oops you answered this, thanks!!!
"both lenses retain their front filter threads" does that mean you can use screw on filters with these or will you need a matte box? Great vid btw!
Just wanted to be sure the circular filters would still work on these lenses.
something you didn't mention the company also says you can send your lens in for the modification if you have the sigma lens.
I would love your thoughts on the Rokinon Cine DS lenses. Super cheap priced, but I see and hear good things
I wonder how they got rid of the barrel travel that the photo lens does when focussing. Some lenses increase like 10cm or more. On a cine lens the length has to be fixed. Are these rehoused lenses moving internally? Like the front element moving in and out inside the housing?
Yeah it’s moving but it’s internal. Same with the photo versions
I'm curious if the parfocal works well when using a speed booster on Blackmagic or GH5? It should right?
It may or may not. I took a PL mount off of one of our cameras and replaced it with an EF mount and the parfocal no longer worked on that camera.
Great Video! I am interested in getting my first set of cinema lenses and these look like they may be perfect for me. I am a film student at ASU currently and would love to connect and maybe collaborate on something!
This was very helpful. Ive never ordered outside of the states. How did customs work and how long did it take to get here once you ordered?
How bad or good is the focus breathing on the 18-35 though? Same as on the stills version, or a bit better?
it's not bad the 50-100 is way way worse
@@EpicLightMedia thx!
DZOFilm Cinema zoom lenses 20-55 50-125 cost almost the same and the 20-55 the focus breathing is absent
Yes those weren’t out when we made this video but I want to try them
Thanks for the great detail.
Can I use these on a super 35mm sensor? I own a BM Mini URSA G2. I followed the links you provided, and it say "APS-C frame, not support full frame". But since they are cine lenses, I figured I would ask. Please and Thanks.
ThNks for asking! Yes apsc and super 35 are the same they will work great on the ursa.
Epic Light Media thanks. I just read a bunch of articles saying APSC will give a vignette effect to a full frame sensor.
Thanks for clearing it up.
@@EpicLightMedia Sorry to bug you one more time. I am about to place the order for the 2 lenses. I saw they are promoted as manual. Does that mean the zoom button on my view finder won't work with the lens? I shoot with the Ursa mini G2.
Amazon ad for 18-35 says: "APS-C frame, not support full frame." Is that true? If so, this is and important detail not covered in the video.
In their website they cannot guarantee functionality if the lens is adapter for other mounts. Is this something you've researched? Is the lens adaptable for other mounts (eg e mount it m4/3)?
I tried on my pocket 4K recently and the parfocal didn’t work
Awesome video! Great sound too. Do you mind sharing what Mic and recording device you used for the outdoor scene? Thank you.
The MKH416 straight into the Ursa around -12db with no processing in post
it can create vignetting with a speedbooster in the bmpcc4k ?
Would it be insane to attach this to a new iphone? I'm new to this so I have no clue. I just don't feel like putting more money into a camera, and instead use it to go into the lens. Another dumb question - 18-35 means you can shoot in 35mm?
it would be impossible to do that, and if you're buying this to attach to an iphone then you relaly don't need this lens because the image is the EXACT same as the still version apart from parafocal + housing
dzo films are coming up with fairly cheap and accurate cinezooms for around 4500 dollars for 2 20-55 and 50-125 t 2.8
Does the 18-53mm with the poket 4k fit into a ronin S2 to balance it?
Will I still see the focus assist lines with the Blackmagic camera?
Yes
dude your audio is on point. I know thats random but whats your audio setup?
Thanks! It’s simple actually. MKH416 straight into our ursa with compression in post. It’s such a great mic
@@EpicLightMedia Thanks man Ill def have to take a look. Cheers
Im soooo Glad I found your channel
This is the best video I found. I like this. Maybe I am being picky. But just seemed more mellow your an upbeat guy and that shows here too. But some of the others I couldn't get on board with. I've subbed in the hope of a return to this. But I guess you shouldn't just chase after me. 🤣 The breathing on that 50-100 was aweful.
You deserve far more attention
Hi - new subscriber, great channel. One question - what's the focus throw on your sigma 18-35?
120 degrees
@@EpicLightMedia thanks
