I feel similarly about the tampon comment, too. Lots of young people, specifically young girls, are not taught about their bodies, or fed outright misinformation about their development. I remember feeling deeply ashamed, disgusted, and scared by what was happening to my body during puberty, and I consider myself to be very, VERY lucky that I had a family that was both open-minded and informative. Many young people are not so lucky. Girls coming from conservative families are often taught that their bodies functioning as they ought to during a normal stage of development is a sign that they're dirty in some way, and in many cases, are outright told that tampons are inherently sexual (they absolutely aren't!) and that using them makes you "impure" in some way.
Having a beloved TH-camr confirm this horrifying belief, even jokingly, in addition to making sexual abuse from a family member seem like a joke, is unbelievably dangerous for a kid. Christ alive.
Edit: almost forgot about the subtle homophobia here and there! Not terribly surprising, and certainly not the first piece of children's media be homophobic, but again...yikes. :(

Speaking as a therapist… She needs to be evaluated for complex trauma yesterday. And no, her potentially being traumatized isn’t an “excuse.” Human behavior is a result of environment/experiences and genetics. Understanding why a person does what they do is essential to helping them change. Someone saying “she probably has trauma” isn’t a reason to say “yeah so she can’t help it” or “she’s broken,” it means “she needs to get treatment so she can become a better person and not hurt anyone else.”

Pretty sure her mom and uncle dated in it too. Very odd. It’s disgusting how I thought all of this was somewhat okay. And that calling kids sluts and hoes and porn was cool.

Instead, Colleen said the accusations against her were false and that the people accusing her on-line don't care about helping victims or even punishing wrongdoers, but instead are all "haters" who enjoy making people more successful than them suffer... is vile

To anyone who might think this wasn’t calculated and intentional:
I was groomed online at the age of 13. It all started with him making innuendos as “jokes” and dropping inappropriate words in conversation; he wouldn’t outright tell me to look at pornography or explain WHAT these words meant, but he repeatedly referenced them and put them out there so they were in my mind. If I asked him what it meant, he’d just respond with “it’s funny because it’s adult and edgy, your parents just don’t want you to know adult humor”. It only escalated from there, and once he had conditioned me, I didn’t question any of his comments and requests because he taught me that it was all “just funny jokes” and that he wouldn’t do any of the awful things he did in seriousness.
Even if it isn’t in the context of “hey kids, go to this website and watch porn!”, it’s STILL a calculated tactic of grooming children. If anything, hiding these references between innocent children’s activities and jokes is a telltale sign that Colleen is trying to normalize these themes to kids. To unaware children reading this book, all the references blend together and they view EVERYTHING in this book as something that’s okay for them to see. This woman is absolutely sick.

In a somewhat cruel irony, the weird racism many European countries have against Roma people leaked into my own country by cultural osmosis, but people got confused and mixed up Roma and Romanians. As a result a bunch of people have negative stereotypes about Romanians that clearly were originally about Roma. Actual Roma are largely ignored, besides in a couple cities where the Roma community is associated with begging. Very strange, if a bit sad that people still hold these prejudices.

When I was younger (I want to say 10 or 11), I watched Haters Back Off! on Netflix. I adored the show, and it made me cry. I found a few moments funny, but for most of it, I really related to Miranda. I'm autistic, and many of her experiences reflected my own because I was often socially unaware and felt like I was living in my own world. I'm now 17 and looking back, I realize that the character Miranda Sings wasn't meant to be relatable, but meant to make fun of me.
Although this isn't as bad as most of her other allegations, I felt like it was important to point out another thing she did that was harmful. While there were people who related to Miranda and found her comforting, everyone else was laughing at her, and people like me were never in on the joke. It really highlights many of my experiences feeling like I'm doing everything right but somehow I'm still "weird" or "offputting" and never in on the joke no matter how hard I tried. When Colleen was like “apparently it’s my job to decide what’s appropriate for everyone’s kids” what she doesn’t get is that when you market things towards kids the kids that are allowed to watch it will repeat it and reenact it to the ones who aren’t allowed to watch it. My sibling’s friend would recite Miranda sketches to my sibling and then my sibling would recite them to me. Funny, IMHO: When adults pretend to be child characters for an adult audience, and the point of the joke is that children can be annoying and weird (to adults) and/or that they don't understand the adult world. IMHO, the perfect skit in this regard will ideally cause us to sympathize with both the adults and the child simultaneously in different ways.
Unfunny and annoying: Adults acting like kids for a child audience. I hate it because kids love it, and then they end up repeating the most irritating bits ad nauseam.
Unfunny, mean, and cringe: Adults acting like undeniably-neurodivergent-coded kids, where the joke is just that "weirdness" is fundamentally bad.
Miranda's "humor" is frankly creepy, because she's doing clearly-adult bits for a younger audience who'll just end up repeating the parts about porn or having blood in your stool because they're taboo and edgy.

I disagree about the teenager part. The way colleen is doing it is in a groomer way, but you also can't treat a 16 year old like they're the same as a 10 year old. In a book, it's appropriate to talk about sex in the context of the characters themselves having conversations about it. So there is a healthy way to approach the topic. I'm a teenager and I think it's condescending when media acts like as a 17 year old you're a child, but as an 18 year old you're a full adult.

A big issue that I had with this book was the fact that the kids I’d babysit were taking the advice literally. One of my kids got her first period really early and I gave her the choice between pads and tampons until she started panicking. Kept repeating “only in, not out” to the point where it felt cultish. I also noticed that the crude humor they had was completely different from ours- growing up, I thought farts and butts were hilarious and made jokes about them all the time. These kids talked about foot size and lip color, if you know what I mean. Colleen was one of their favorite content creators, but once I realized she was a big reason why these 6-10 year olds pretended to be hyper sexual I stopped letting them play her videos. They were furious until I put on SpongeBob, the Amazing World of Gumball, etc. They calmed down and developed the harmless potty humor I had as a kid. Needless to say, it was a month long struggle to reverse the damage Colleen did on these kids. As a content creator, everything she said or did resonated with the kids deeply. Maybe one day she’ll realize the depth of her negative impact on children.

I'm wondering if the creator of this character (I forget her name) has repressed abuse trauma and/or grew up in a home with a lot of toxic masculinity. It baffles me, this book, and I would never show it or this creator to my children... My oldest child was watching a Minecraft video the other night, and there was a BDSM scene in it! Parents today have to be so insanely on top of everything, and having conversations with kids, to counteract the effects of these inappropriate things. We all huddled in the back of the classroom reading through the pages for the first time, and when it got to the menstruation section the owner of the book blushed and slammed the book closed. A couple of the moms found out what we had been reading, and the owner of the book got into huge trouble for reading such an inappropriate book. As a person working with kids in an Elementary school, who has had tons of abuse/neglect/questionable training. The book as you describe up until the 18-minute mark is mostly pre-grooming types of behavior which include vaguely inappropriate comments or topics, and engaging in "naughty" topics to see if the receiver is open to questionable ideas or behaviors. This is how a predator finds out which child is vulnerable. It is, in fact, something that I as a Paraeducator have been taught to watch out for as a pattern in the other adults with whom I work. Predators do end up in many positions associated with children so they can have access to their prey. It is incredibly disturbing to see this book being put out by a major company. I am aware of some of the controversy surrounding the author and this makes me think the author is definitely a danger to vulnerable children and young adults. I've had family sleepovers where at 10 I would wear a belt and jeans to bed to be "less easy access" not realizing that my cousin next to me had actually been a victim already. I KNEW what was going on, and IDK how I made it out of that shit untouched.
This Coleen shit has been a roller coaster ride and the best thing she could have done for herself is NOT put out that stupid apology song. At first I was like "Ok, she was inappropriately talking about personal issues to children. Creepy for sure... over the line potentially... hmm..." then I find out about Miranda Sings and I was like "Gosh I hope this isn't one of those youtubers that sings in cartoon character impressions? :C ", then I started learning about the character and was like "..... so this is obviously an adult channel right? This is dark humor aimed at adults? And parents just weren't paying attention to--" BUT NO IT'S FOR KIDS?!?!? DID NOBODY LOOK AT IT BEFORE GREEN LIGHTING IT?!?! I've only seen couple second clips and I won't watch any more than that. Even if it were adult aimed dark-humor I've got a low tolerance but knowing that crap was being MARKETED TO KIDS. This reminds of a russian children book I read and loved as a kid.
It's written by Grigory Oster - famous and beloved kids book writer - and its name would be something like "Bad Advices: a book for naughty children and their parents". Basically, it's a satire on a nature of unruly kids that would, if told any good advice, do it absolutely backwards. So it contains many various funny rhymes encouraging those kids to do everything from making a soup out of mum's perfume and dad's shoes to breaking the lightbulbs to save on electric bills.
The nature of modern kids' entertainment is that, once in a while, somebody re-invents that book. But instead of making it clearly satirical or funny, they make it absolutely disgusting and tell every advice with the sraightest face imaginable. People just refuse to consider what made them laugh as children and go "well kids nowadays love gross humor, so let's just pack this media full of it, that would be so clever and hilarious and there would be no need for actual comedy or good writing" and that is insane to me.
It is insane how there are good children books out there, but this garbage is what takes the spotlight.

About the "buy another copy" part. You just KNOW she did it to get kids to by more of her books. When I was a child, someone gifted to me The Little Prince and on it's back was written something like "this book is not for children (...)" clearly meaning that it had existential themes that could be enjoyed by adults. But being the literal literal kid I was, I refused to read it until I was a teenager because I actually thought it was an actual warning for children not yo read it.
Kids may get things literal and not understand a joke or undertone. Such (consumerist and sexual) predatory content should NEVER be in a kids book.

That clip about her dog really broke my heart and made me angry. I've had to put dogs down before (because they were sick/dying) and it's the hardest thing I've ever had to do. To watch/hear Colleen just play it off as some kind of funny anecdote, I can't put into words how disturbed I was.

As someone who was sexually assaulted for many years of my life, if I had gotten this as a kid, I probably would have cried reading it or just felt extremely uncomfortable. It's insane how she thinks this is normal or acceptable, especially when some children are particularly sensitive to some of these topics due to experience. Disgusting.
Edit: I got to the part of the uncle position. I was assaulted like that, so I definitely would have cried reading it or never wanted to look at it again.
