you give off the vibes of "exhausted middle school English teacher who cannot believe that her students still use the incorrect there/their/they're". hope u feel better
last week my english teacher spent 30 minutes of class having us do an assignment on there/their/they’re because she was fed up with people still using the wrong ones. she is also my favorite teacher :)
I have never seen people actually make that mistake irl; just on the internet. Same for your/you're. Maybe I'm reaching, but it seems to be a Western thing.
@@user-rr2ep3gt5p a lot of my classmates and schoolmates in general make that mistake so it's not just a western thing lol, and, not to be a boomer, but i think it comes with not reading a lot in general
@@biseragjurovska1998 I’m 33 and live in north east US, my coworkers and some friends/family make this mistake alllll the damn time. It’s so frustrating, I blame the school systems. Have known several teachers with poor grammar. I definitely agree with you that it seems like a bu product of less reading.
@S Meza She may be a talented actress, but you can't deny she wasn't given a following for the book. I published my own book, rarely get over 25 copies sold. She publishes, and her followers buy it because they like her, even if they don't like poetry. She didn't build a following on writing yk? Idk how to explain
I feel like the difference between Lili's book and Gabbie's books is that Lili tried to write a good poetry book. She likes poetry and wanted to write a good poetry collection, but, because she is a celebrity, publishers just want to get the book published. So she doesn't get proper editing or mentoring, and she may not have been given the proper time to complete a book. I think she came into it full and good intentions but got sold out by the publisher. Where as a normal person who took this to a publisher would have been told no and gone home to improve their work, Lili's publisher took it immediately because they saw a money maker.
Couldn’t agree more! And I genuinely feel like Lili will want to improve and get better and that we’ll see great things from her writing in a few years! :)
I don't know much about poetry but im an ilustrator and i can't help but eyeroll at this kind of "illustrations" Doodles, they are poorly and unoriginal doodles.
It irks me so much when amateurs poets reject criticism because the poem meant something to them. They know they don’t have to publish everything they write, right? Imagine if a bakery had to sell every sweet treat they baked, even the burnt, undone, and nasty tasting ones.
she actually got pissed when someone said something along the lines of "you are not a poet why are you writing this its really bad" and as usual she went on twitter and cried about it like a 12 year old and was like you will get your karma bc you are miserable and pathetic like? what the hell. she is the most annoying "celeb" i have seen. like she can't stand when ppl have an opinion and all she does is whine and go after ppl for no reason lmfao. and tbh she is actually a bad actress but no one is ready for that convo
Depends on which one, there is a green one too, I think it has all the colors of the rainbow with their selection. But it does look weirdly red in this lighting, I thought the original was a lighter yellow tbh.
It's funny how modern instapoets/celebrities are all doing the same thing: minimalist 'poems' and drawings about heartbreak and depression all presented in the exact same format and style. No room for individuality and experimentation whatsoever. (sorry I haven't finished the video yet so you may have already mentioned it, but I needed to get it off my chest) :P
This is the problem, as a poet myself I noticed on Instagram that those pages you mention are literally the only ones that get out there and that people enjoy
I feel like a lot of these celebrity poetry books have pretty good titles and then the execution is...lacking. Like, oh 'Swimming Lessons' and learning to do something for the first time and the idea of treading water and the controlled environment of a pool compared to the wild untamed ocean or the vastness of a lake--that all checks out and then it just doesn't pan out the way it could have.
Maybe its a metaphor for how excited you are to start swimming lessons then you realize it’s not all it’s cracked up to be and kinda just sucks, so you stop after two lessons, just like the poetry in the book
i hate that there's so many "bad" poetry books made by actors/actresses/people from other businesses trying to sound relatable and deep out there smh, makes poetry seem like just anyone can do it with no concept of what poetry actually is
True and that's the only reason Rachel is negative about them, because they're taking money from a audience they had from another platform. If they weren't charging their fans, I'm sure Rachel would have a very nice constructively positive discussion about their development as a poet
I feel like they are using the art form so they can add “poet” to the list of credentials and get a louder applause. But then again I don’t want to say there aren’t well known people out there who truly do find an interest in it and are searching for something that makes them feel more like an artist.
Soon they will be the reason why poetry will die out. And thats sad and infuriating because it ruins the path for other good and real poems and poets out there.
I actualy think that is the only image I get from this book xD I imagine she implies they had sex, and were so impatient about it that they didn't even get into the bed (so you have the clean sheets but the damp duvet from their sweat -I hope); however when they finished, while she was left there to contemplate of what happened, he went on with housework and videogames, as if the time together was a chore or some past-time... ...Guys, am I reading too much into Instagram-style poetry? Send help
should have been: I want you in every shade you come in; The bright orange sunlight washing over my face as I open my eyes The neon green of a toxic obsession you can't let go of The infinite blue of your deepest, darkest oceans The rosy hue of my cheeks as you kiss me The dark crimson of the blood on your knife of a tongue The amber brown of your comforting eyes The powdery white of a persistent, overbearing addiction And the lightless black of being devoured whole by your love by your anger by all of you.
@@lamb2004 i know this is the most random thing ever but what is a good poetry book? not this generic shit? something easy and inspirational to read? ps: i'm not a native english speaker.
Hey, I’ve never really read books, just starting and I really like poems...I wrote something, can you/anyone tell me if it’s any good/bad, I’ll appreciate it so much :') I mean at least enjoy it so that’s nice lol She is a scattered head And she totes it all around town Wherever she goes. Creating Even if she’s a scattered head She’s yet to be In the beginning We coexisted together for a decade remember? Without saying a word Who knows, we might have met before And now we coexist together again Without saying a word I don’t say anything, because I feel like we’ll cross existence again And if we coexist together for decades Without saying anything Remember? We existed
It most likely isn’t pleasant when you go in for a kiss and OH HOLY PIANO, does their breath REEK. If you’re unlucky they’re also an indoor smoker so their vehicle and/or place of residence stinks too. Secondhand smoke is also dangerous.
@@GoroAkechi_Real kind of odd to think that the romanticization of smoking started WAAAAAY WAY back, when cigarettes were much stronger. These days we have different flavors and such, frankly some are tasty. But I can't imagine making out with someone when they smoked something ten times stronger than modern marlboro reds. Must've tasted like death
I feel like anyone can make up one of these in seconds, you just describe a literal situation and connect it to a cheap metaphor, easy "you step to avoid cracks on the sidewalk... when will you avoid stepping on the cracks... in my heart"
A few days ago I found these random lines. Idk who wrote them, idk if they're part of a bigger poem, but, "A relit cigarette never tastes the same And that's all I'll say about rekindling old flames." There is literally more depth in that than in Lily's poem. Same theme, roughly the same word count, but those lines are just so much more interesting, right?
See? That's decent because I can pull an idea: It's about the fact that rekindling an old relationship will never feel as good as it did before, even if you really want it to. Most people understood that, duh, but it's not just a dumb metaphor, it's got a message.
also, may i add that the use of cigarette connotes that the relationship was toxic and addictive, and maybe that’s why the author doesn’t want to speak on it/remember it. 2 lines more interesting than anything in lilis whole book
Yes! I also think of Margaret Atwood’s poem: “you fit into me like a hook into an eye a fish hook an open eye” It’s extremely short but there’s so much to unpack. An open eye sounds so vulnerable.
@@joaopaulo1802 honey, this is the real world. You can't be a world-class actress and expect to be great at everything else as well. As an aspiring editor, you are NOT going to survive in this world if you can't take and handle constructive criticism and call it "disrespectful" at that. I love Lili Reinhart. As an actress. Although I love her, I can still come to terms with the fact that her poetry isn't it.
@@joaopaulo1802 she literally is offering constructive criticism. She’s pointing out the issues she sees in the poems, offering examples of where it’s done better.
Wanted to note there's also a difference between "pity me" and victim poetry. Not every expression of trauma, heartbreak, and whatnot needs to come across as empowering to avoid coming across as "pity me" or to be good. There is so much value in expressing weakness, vulnerability, and pain in the moment or the aftermath. Sometimes it didn't make you stronger. Victims should be respected just as much as survivors, they're just not as far into their healing yet. This book is total pity me poetry though. Too many read like tweets with aesthetic line breaks. I hope they helped her heal and feel good as she wrote them but that's not justification for a price tag or shield from criticism
my least favourite genre of poem is the "I can't express myself the way I want to" because it feels lazy and cliched in my opinion. But the Nick Cave song 'Rings of Saturn' has this line that kinda moves me. It's told as a series of attempts to describe his lover "like a black fly on the ceiling" and "blue as a jelly fish" but also contains the line "And I'm spurting ink over the sheets yet she remains completely unexplained." It's sort of obscene, I know, but the sentiment isn't "I don't have the skill to express how I love this person" it's "This person IS ineffable, but I'm still trying to describe them."
This reminds me of a line from the song "Candy" by Paolo Nutini. It goes "You know you've got plenty to offer baby, but I guess I've taken quite enough. while I'm some stain there on your bedsheet, you're my diamond in the rough." It's about a man who reveres a woman and loves her so deeply, that even if she doesn't feel as strongly as he does or her attention is fleeting sometimes, he feels like it's worth it just to be near her.
My issue with her poems is that they are so short, they don’t tell you anything. It’s like “ok, you wished you would’ve kiss them harder, now what?” Why you wish that?, where did you leave? I think she could go through so many directions but she justs ends everything so abruptly.
I think she doesn’t go deep cause of her obsessive “fans” that will take ANYTHING she writes even if it wasn’t true, even if she SAID it wasn’t true, these people would look for hints of anything related to her personal life, especially w her co-star (now ex boyfriend) cole sprouse. So even IF she wanted to go deep I don’t think she would for that reason, just like a lot of singers who are trapped when they write their lyrics cause people will come with their Theories and think this is their real life. Idk or she just doesn’t know how write deep poems 😭😭 orrr she thinks people atomically think of her and her co-star so a hint would be deep enough for them because they like them. I’m so sorry I’m way overthinking this 😭😭
when oates read the first poem my immediate thought was, "that's a premise." like a sketch, in drawing. you may post a sketch but you don't call it the end piece, you say that it's a work in progress or just a fun doodle to loosen the muscles before ye move to the actual work. same with the poem. should've actually build an actual poem based off that ""poem"" instead of releasing it as the final piece.
i dont even like poetry but same. i like that she is able to pinpoint the flaws (meaning if someone wanted to improve they would know exactly what to work on) and put into words something i might notice but not understand lol
I like no-holds barred Rachel, these ‘poetry’ books just piss me off at this point too. I’m a super casual poetry writer so I don’t get insulted but do get frustrated by their set up for a poem and then delivering nothing. I want to buy these books and use their ideas to write ACTUAL poems from. Its like poetic blue balls lmao 😩
Not a poet or anything, but i kinda extended that colors poem ... I want you in all the shades you come in All the reds, the fists, the fights All the blues, the tears, the cries All the blacks, all the whites All the darks, all the lights
because kyra is a genius??? obviously??? that sweet baby's iq is over 200, and they are a graduate of the school of fetch. they're currently finding the elusive answer to 'who's a good girl'? any poetry would look awful next to kyra's work 💕🐶
i feel like celebrity poetry isn't bad, simply because it's celebrity "poetry." they take a series of clichè topics and add in some fancy words or whatever and call it art when it's something that i (a sophomore in highschool) could do just as easily and maybe even a bit better. they try to be deep but they really only say a few lines that don't have deeper meaning then stuff like "my body was a canvas and you were the artist" LMAO. the sentiments, for the most part are sweet but way too overused and come off as cringe. imo someone has to possess a deep love for literature and a certain intellect to be able to write REAL poetry (as well as literature in general) and not many people have this gift, especially not celebrities. they need to stop being rupi khar copycats (keep in mind she is somewhat controversial but imo is what started this train of bad poetry) and stay in their own lane. edit ; i'm in NO WAY gatekeeping art and i miss-worded how it can be a gift. yes, people can be born with it, but people can also work hard to be successful with things like poetry as well.
While I agree with the sentiment, I just take a bit issue with saying real poetry. There is certainly bad poetry, but as someone who is working to be a better writer. I think we need to make room for bad poetry to be real poetry so beginning poets and writers, like myself, have that room to make messy, bad poetry and stories on order to grow and these can be used to grow which is why I enjoy these videos. Anyways I hope this makes sense and I appreciate your comment.
(Hi, I'm someone who was your age when I started writing poetry, and I've since been... moderately involved in the poetry world. Published, edited, no full collection of my own, I'm only in my early 20s, but yeah, I just wanted to add my thoughts because this comment REALLY made me feel like I was seeing 15-year-old me, lol) I don't really think of writing as anyone's "gift", because in my experience it just takes a hell of a lot of doing and failing to create your own style and actually understand the workings of literature, poetry, or any kind of art. A lot of these celebrities are actors or singers and they know this applies to their own craft. But "poetry" has this kind of pretension around it to people that it's either some highly unapproachable gift of the gods and poets must be geniuses (hell no), or now we also kind of see an opposite sentiment, that anyone can just do it if Rupi Kaur can write a sentence in lowercase with no punctuation and call it a poem. These celebrities feel comfortable with the barriers that the mainstreaming of micropoetry has broken down, and they're capitalizing on it for themselves to make it seem like they're all real well-rounded artists, visionaries, Renaissance men/women. Meanwhile they don't put in the effort to develop a talent, grow with practice and age, like they have with their acting or music. It's hacky and tacky. Of course, I find this even more infuriating when it's celebrities who can scoop up publishing deals on their name recognition without breaking a nail. At LEAST Rupi Kaur made that name for herself FROM HER POETRY, regardless of that poetry's quality. People who like her, like her FOR her poetry, whereas people who like Lili Reinhart, like the idea of Lili Reinhart expanding her brand. These celebrities also do nothing to support anyone but themselves in their poetic endeavors. There are plenty of poetry non-profits and small-time presses they could be working with and promoting to spread the art of poetry, to bring along a wave of poets with them in their success, but they're not so generous. They don't want to be apart of a literary movement. Again, it's self-promotion solely. But yeah, I really agree with you, with a few additional points of my own from time and experience. I don't think I can even entertain the notion of any of these celebrities being "poets" until they not just put forth a REAL effort in their "work", but also respectfully uplift the endangered medium that is poetry while they're trying to say they're publishing some of their own. It's the oldest form of literature and the smallest section at any bookstore. The more I go back to check, I always see more and more space taken up by actors and singers whose fans will pick out their fave's book and ignore everything else on the shelf.
the idea of a persons first time publishing their poetry, its a full book? its very strange. im sure lili was encouraged to put out this book, but i would have started with submitting a few poems for a magazine and see where that went, not go straight for a full compilation
Please read Halsey's poetry book you're the only person I can talk about poetry, even though is just in my imagination. Your videos inspired me to learn more about poetry and write my own, please!
I think no offence but that’s kind of rude she is a separate person to him her past relationship doesn’t define her she’s talking about love it’s not just to him it’s to people in her life the book is about her that is something she stands up for about feminism women should be able to talk about love without it just being about their relationships with men it’s about them individually she’s fallen in love with other people before she’s writing to her audience
I just wanna say I love how your dog is just meandering in and out of the shot! And how you interact with her while you're filming, and don't apologize for her presence or anything. a great celebrity poetry book is 'I Would Leave Me If I Could." By Halsey. It's not similar to the instagram/Tumblr poetry, I think you'd find it really refreshing and a good read
Yes !! Halsey has always been a poetry writer, most of her songs (especially on manic) are actually poems !! You can tell the difference between a celebrity who has a real love and passion for the art and one who follows some edgy Instagram accounts and tries to make a deadline. Halsey has been preparing for her book her entire life, gabbi, lili etc started when they got a book deal, that’s very clear I think.
Rachel went from a kind soul who just wanted some poetry to a frustrated TH-cam Poetry teacher who just want publishers to realize that a simple phrase with the format of a poem ain't a poem.
I know it's hard to avoid falling into the views-trap of only reviewing bad poetry but I would love to see you do reviews or something of your absolute favourite books or do reviews of established poets who we can reasonably expect to be good. Because it can totally be exhausting to wade through people ruining your favourite medium or just generally being subpar. I don't think anyone would begrudge you doing something that makes you happy more often
can i just say, completely unironically and genuinely, im glad you dont edit out your little moments with kira, even when she's making dog sounds. they make me very happy
My mama created me from mud. She put every piece of me together little by little, as if I was a vase, and she, my potter. She took a long time to make me, days, months, perhaps even years. I wouldn’t know, I was not conscious. But when she was finally done with me, she cradled me in her arms and said, ‘There, my love, you are done. You went through heat and you went through storms, only to emerge absolutely perfect and strong.’ I had never felt more comfortable, more strong. My papa painted me in blues, greens and reds and adorned me in flowers that grew by the river beds. Time and again I asked him why I was not decorated with jewels and painted in gold and silver like the other vases. He always laughed, planted a kiss on my little forehead and said, ‘My love, you are my treasure. No jewel or metal could replace your worth.’ I had never felt more appreciated. Time passed and you came, took my hands from my parents and said, ‘I shall hold your daughter as I hold a feather. Soft and light and never in a place where she might blow away.’ My parents hesitated. You assured them you were an artist and knew the value of art; you promised that you would never tear me apart. In that moment, I felt that your love could rival that of my parents’. I was happy. I felt light. I felt as free as a feather in flight. You caressed me with love and praised my mother’s sight. You traced over my father’s painting and when you finished, I felt fine. Your love was different from the one I had known, but I still knew that you loved me all along. Months flew by in a second and your language changed. It became different. You said to me the things my parents did, but it didn’t fell the same. You looked at other vases, all twinkling and bright and you compared me to them, every time I was in your sight. When I felt down, you would always say, ‘You are my treasure, my darling, but you would be better if you had gold in your veins.’ For days and months I refused as I knew what it entailed. I refused until I caught you with a jeweled vase in our bed. You didn’t hold me gently, I fell. I shattered and dissolved in a million little pieces. You searched for them all and you begged me to forgive you. You said, ‘I’m sorry but it wasn’t my fault that happened. I would’ve still loved you if you had let me put gold in your veins.’ I was very much in love with you so I agreed. You carefully placed me on a tray and pieced me. You spent hours and hours painting me in gold. You even went a step further and coated me in jewels. After a long time you were done. I was patched to seem as new as the day I was born. You looked content and you looked happy. You said you loved how I looked. You even said you loved me, and I hadn’t heard that in a few moons. You took me to the mirror and asked what I thought. You looked so ecstatic so I couldn’t tell the truth, but I much prefer the blues and greens and reds my father painted me in rather than how you made me look. _So, I’m late (life, you know) but I watched the video and when you said the part about that broken poem kind of reminded you of the movie (that I haven’t watched) and the vase analogy there, it kind of ignited an idea. I planned to write a poem, but I don’t know the P on Poem (I’m trying to learn more, but again, life). So, I tried to write a short-story-ish story as I’m a tad bit better at that than at poems. The problem was that I was still half-stuck on rhyme mode so I don’t know how this turned out. As always, constructive criticism is welcome._
Celebrities publishing half-arsed tweets for a quick cash grab...while there are poets out there, like myself, who are serious about the craft. I don't want to sound melodramatic but this form of poetry is putting a sour taste on the artform :((
As a writer of currently only fiction manuscripts, I feel the same. I’ve tried poetry and sometimes one line I write I’m proud of, but poetry is so hard to write for me compared to manuscripts.
@@jamesfv1 That's completely understandable. I think its important to note that poetry can be a form of therapy (that's how it started for me in a way) and I'm absolutely open to that, but when people start to publish that poetry then i have a problem 🤣 cos even though its relatable and 'comes from the heart' doesn't mean its good
If you want to suffer a bit more, I just read all I could of this web ‘novel’ called The Forgotten Princess. The grammar is horrible, the world building uninteresting and convoluted, and the relationships toxic. With mine own eyes, I had to read the sentence, “’Neigh,’ the horse said.” It’s not poetry, but it’s a pretty funny day read and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it :)
So I'm reading it bc of this comment and.......my god it's atrocious. And the comments are even worse 😭 they're all like omg this is So GOoD. It makes me so frustrated as an aspiring writer. And it came 1st in the contest it was written in?????? Bye-
to be fair a lot of those stuff are written by teenage kids who probably just recently explored the world of storytelling. like am all about clowning on stuff like _After_ but mostly bc the author is an adult. when it comes to (potentially) kids, well ... that could be bullying.
Little Somebody That’s completely true :/ I’ll try to evaluate my comments before posting in the future. I know I would feel crappy if I posted a passion project only to get bashed online. If the author sees this by any small chance- I’m sorry for my hateful words and keep writing the things that make you happy
I’m starting to think most people write simplified poetry books is because they know they sell, not because they’re passionate about the work that they write. At this point it’s getting exhausting and I’m extremely bored of it.
since she's an actor and very well known, she has more of an audience out there for her book. unfortunately for those who have little followers or a knowing in the category of 'popularity' their books are not given much praise towards. it's truly disappointing to those who understand and put their heart and soul into their craft.
In that poem where Armatage talked about jellies and tubes and the heart. To me it was so much deeper than just being an organ donor. For me it was clearly about depression, about feeling like you aren't connected to your body anymore and people can keep using you if they want to, you aren't that important anyway, but he'd like them to stop making his heart hurt so much. This really hits when he says "where it stops or hangs" perhaps he meant hanging literally rather than just figuratively
as an artist i'm so glad you called out poorly traced line drawings 😭😭 they're my least favorite thing about digital art because so many people are uneducated about digital art and think people freehand it all and they get so much credit online
I feel like all these poetry books try to emulate Shel Silverstein and his iconic illustrations and clever poems, but they all fall so short of that because they are lazy and unoriginal.
As someone who fancies myself a decent writer, I gotta say, the criticism you offer in these videos is insanely on point and valuable. The comparisons to other works that share similarities but are better written are wonderful.
“You have to have a real understanding of poetic technique in order to break and subvert them well and in a good effective way.” YES this is exactly what I’ve thought before with poetry! You cannot afford to do it “badly” or unconventionally if you can’t do it well conventionally!
Gave a quick go at expanding the "poem" about the shades. Still very bad, and underdeveloped, but it was so much wasted potential it hurts. I loved you for every colour you were The pale pink of your cheeks, as you kissed me for the first time and The yellow of the flower you poked behind my ear, wet with raindrops and dew The green that we grew, through the mud, The beige of that old sofa, you pushed through the creaky door way of our new house, when it was first new, and not old. For these were, and still are, the colours of love. Not only those, but, I will love you in every colour The hot red of your anger, burning beneath your eyes The blues of your soul, hollowed out from your chest, to give to me and The purple of the first bruise upon a cheek, the busted lip from a mouth that had hurt me with mere words, for even these, are the colours of love. Not only those, but I will love you in every shade The bright milky whites of your good days, sun shining on our bed sheets, and the way you take your coffee, I know and The greys, oh, the greys, in your eyes, it is the shade with which I compare everything else, as you, are balance. Most of all, I will love you, you, all mixed up, and messy, but smiling anyway, because you, and everything you are is the colour of love.
omg, this is really good! i’m replying to bump this lol. you clearly spent at least a bit of time, even if it was just an hour or so. do you have a favourite poem?
@@muffin_the_metalhead3488 thank you :) some time, I think, but not an hour. I'm unsure. Stupidly, I'm a bit of a pantser, which isn't a term I've heard someone use when it comes to poetry. I should probably stop😂
For the bedsheets poem- perhaps by damp she meant sweat from certain activities? She could have said "sweat-damp" or something Even then it doesn't sound very comfortable and still isn't great but like at least it would make sense lmao
I thought it was just another way to imply they'd just been washed - you know how duvets are really thick and usually don't dry all the way in the dryer like sheets do? in any case, it's a poem that says pretty much nothing lol
Can you please review Halsey’s poetry book? I am a huge fan of her music but I don’t want to buy her book unless I have a full confidence in it’s quality. Love your videos!
I really like her book, but I was confident in her writing due to other spoken word pieces she has done, and her songwriting. I actually like it more than Lana's book and I was very surprised about that
It just kinda makes me feel like these people are disrespecting poetry as a whole 😂 like it’s obvious these people don’t read poetry and don’t love it. It’s just upsetting bc I feel like poetry is one of the best things humans ever did a and it’s something that stretches back to ancient Sumer and these people just sh!t on it by throwing together random sentences and crappy doodles and make so much money
i think it’s really cool that we can see certain poets and authors grow and develop their writing style throughout the works they publish. like you said, i really think lili has a lot of potential for the future if she decides to keep writing.
Wondering if you’ve read any of savannah brown’s work? She recently released her newest poetry book called Sweetdark which I think is lovely, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on it :)
Such a shame. I love Lili- she’s a talented actress (even in riverdale with terrible writing she manages to act well. And she was great in Hustlers) and I really like her as a person, how she’s open about mental health and beauty standard etc. So I was really hoping swimming lessons would be good :(
I mean I don't have anything against her doing amateur poetry, but I did think that it was particularly silly to write a whole book of amateur poetry to sell... Pretty much the only reason that she was able to do that was because she was already famous and had people around her kissing her butt and saying that everything she does is brilliant
THank you for all the work you put in, to not only make the video(s) but to actually dissect the books and have them essentially take over your life for a period of time. Seriously, we value the off camera work just as much as the on camera.
I feel like that "it helped me to write it, therefore it has value/is worthy of you spending money/or will help you" is a big slap in the face to poetry that has actually given people a voice and hope during times of great oppression and political turmoil. I'm thinking of Azaleas by Kim Sowol and how dangerous it was during the Japanese occupation of Korea to write poetry in the native language and the wide variety of poetry that has come out the Israel-Palestine conflict. Not trying to invalidate anyone's depression or anyone who felt Lili's/Gabbie's poetry actually helped them, but both just seem to have an over-inflated sense of self-importance at the core of their writing.
I would like to argue the “Lilli’s fans are younger people who want simple poetry to read” critique of the video... I speak only for myself, but as a young reader (I’m 15), I love books that don’t talk down to me. It’s possible to write good literature, and by extent, poetry for young people. They have the capacity to understand and enjoy good writing. I think her poetry is really disappointing, it’s all the same words rearranged to seem deep.
Poetry is poetry. It's not supposed to be easy to understand. Rupi Kaur started the trend of writing simple half assed crap so that people could read it and think themselves intellectuals because they read poEtRy and I will forever hate her for ruining poetry, and contemporary poetry as a whole
I honestly think as 14 year old AND a lili fan that I was too blindsided by how much I liked her as a person, as an actress, that the word “bad” wasn’t something I thought of when I think of lili. I’m really happy I saw this video really showed me how bad most of them are 😭
@@lamar9165 i love lili too and was i aware of how her relationship with cole gradually sparked. i found the book really shallow than expected but it gave me an insight of her relationship with him during and AFTER. i'm glad they broke up. and the book wasn't deeper than what i expected to hear from her.
@@haruhi2815 totally, I think we did get insight on a part of her relationship but we don’t know which of these poems were actually based on her relationship w him and what wasn’t so it’s a problem to tie down every poem she had about love to a single person (Cole) when some of them are not even about him. also just curious why are you glad they broke up ?
@@lamar9165 as i was reading the poems which i just kinda figured was about him cause who else right? there were poems about lili loving him too much but cole being cole he just probably have problems in accepting love what lili is giving to him, and idk i also kind of catch up with other "girl" scene. idk if he was cheating with her. but maybe that poem wasnt really based on experience, but idk. i've read lili's poems that were posted on tumblr, and i never saw someone write poems just for one person and i just think it's was cole she's writing to about. (ofc not all, most of them though) remember when she made a poem ig post on his bday but its deleted now. i just made a conclusion through the poems that she loved him more than he did that's why it didn't work out. good for lili.
I’m a creative writing student, and I’m so glad you’re ripping into these celeb poems. It’s frustrating watching my peers write fantastic and original poetry and never have a chance to be published, meanwhile these celebs write a few unpublished tweets and gain praise.
It's your videos dissecting bad poetry and why it doesn't work that is the best inspiration for me to keep writing my poetry. I don't know what it is, but something about hearing someone else who loves poetry talk about what works and what doesn't gives me so many ideas I want to go down, phrases just pour out of me. I'm sorry that you've been getting more and more frustrated by all the bad poetry you've endured for us, but to me at least, it's greatly appreciated.
I've seen lots of comments annoyed about 'bashing' the book, which is confusing to me as book reviews have always and will always exist. This is a product and it is acceptable and expected for it to be critiqued. I've read her book (I have a degree in anthropology and a minor in English, mostly concerned with language composition, but I have taken a few poetry classes), and I agree with Rachel that most of what is in the book are not poems. They're texts, things one jots down in their journal, maybe even song lyrics, but poems they are not. Yes, art is what you make it, but when you label your art in a well established style that has certain criteria, it is expected that you play with and utilize creatively the frameworks given to you within that style. I do not subscribe to the idea that labeling artistic expression is suppressing creativity. In fact, I think it can enhance it as the artist has to be Creative to figure out how they are going to communicate in a specific way, and that is what makes it special and stand apart from texting something nice to your partner, or sharing something with your friend. Poetry, to me, is basically tiny stories that play with language to enhance the message in clever and thought provoking ways. That does not dictate a length, but it does dictate a message. In Lili's poems, there are rarely messages or stories that she is telling, it is thoughts or feelings she has told simply, predictably, and unoriginally. By messages I mean themes that are explored such as how co-dependence in a relationship affects the relationship or the loss of a partner and how their absence changes shared memories. She touches on these briefly, but does not paint a picture or tell a story, which is the key thing missing here. Poems are still stories. Her poems don't give us a way to think about the world as she does, or reason heartbreak as she does, or experience moments with a partner like she does. It's all very vague, and that is often the result of underdeveloped ideas or the author not being prepared to fully explore and express their feelings towards the subjects they are writing about. So for those of you wishing Rachel hadn't wasted the time doing this because she's just a hater and thoughtfully shared opinions on creative works are not valuable to you, consider why you think these things. Consider why you think that, when someone publishes a book, people who read those kinds of books are not entitled to share their thoughts on it? This video says nothing directly mean about the author herself, but critiques (not criticizes) the form, content, and message/themes of the poems that have been shared with the world for them to interpret how they will. If the poems are crafted carefully, the poet will strike the balance between clarity and interpretation. We have to know your point before we can discuss. When compared to other established poets, this is not a very provoking book of poetry and does not make use of literary devices meant to enhance writing for the reader. Writing is not just art, there is science to it as well, and it's that balance that makes truly amazing poetry. If we lower the bar enough that everyone is amazing simply because they tried something, we will have very low quality and simplistic introspections on life, love, death, etc. and it will hurt our ability to be thoughtful, complex, and holistic thinkers, which affects every aspect of our lives and our shared global existence Complexity of thought, especially in this context, is to be encouraged, not discouraged because you think someone attempting an artistic form is only deserving of praise simply because they did it.
As an English lit major, these videos hurt. There's no literary/poetic merit to these "poems" whatsoever. It's just shower thoughts with randomly assigned line breaks... There's no substance.. And these get published and sold...
I mean they are published because they get bought. And that's not a bad thing. Bad poetry by famous writers can and will lead people to that form of self-expression. Lillies dedicated fanbase consists of young girls. They might be able to easily digest and understand her poetry, relate to it, think about it, create their own similiar or completely different poetry, find more poetry with themes that interest them etc. All of these things are beautiful. Let's be honest, how many 'bad' things did we enjoy as teenagers? I loved some books, movies, series and songs/bands/musicians that no longer quite fit my taste, some of it objectively bad. But it helped me find themes i enjoy, genres I like, interests that still stuck with me. It's also really not like there is a finite amount of writers that can get published... Celebrities are not taking anything away from other artists. If anything it's on the publishers to find and foster more real talent and then market those to a broader audience, imo.
@@josie8997 i think i disagree because chances are if a publisher sees potential and really wants to publish you, they will. Even if they have to wait a while because they don't have the resources to at that moment. There is no causation between celebrities publishing and unknown artists not being picked to do the same. All i'm saying is that this belief that it's unfair that celebrities are published while more talented people aren't is faulty. They don't cause anyone else to not be published. How is it the celebrities fault that they have a easier time because they are providing a built in audience. They can't control that. Would it not be even less fair to tell them that they can't express themselfes through poetry/art/music/whatever (and yes even try to profit of that work) because them having an audience gives them an advantage?

When the imagery in this comment is better than the actual book 😂
YES Swim Lessons is such a good title and it’s just wasted
Maybe its a metaphor for how excited you are to start swimming lessons then you realize it’s not all it’s cracked up to be and kinda just sucks, so you stop after two lessons, just like the poetry in the book
I've always thought the same thing. I was very intrigued when I heard about 'Swimming Lessons', simply because of the title.

Not every expression of trauma, heartbreak, and whatnot needs to come across as empowering to avoid coming across as "pity me" or to be good. It's told as a series of attempts to describe his lover "like a black fly on the ceiling" and "blue as a jelly fish" but also contains the line "And I'm spurting ink over the sheets yet she remains completely unexplained."

I think she doesn’t go deep cause of her obsessive “fans” that will take ANYTHING she writes even if it wasn’t true, even if she SAID it wasn’t true, these people would look for hints of anything related to her personal life, especially w her co-star (now ex boyfriend) cole sprouse. So even IF she wanted to go deep I don’t think she would for that reason, just like a lot of singers who are trapped when they write their lyrics cause people will come with their Theories and think this is their real life. i feel like celebrity poetry isn't bad, simply because it's celebrity "poetry." they take a series of clichè topics and add in some fancy words or whatever and call it art when it's something that i (a sophomore in highschool) could do just as easily and maybe even a bit better. they try to be deep but they really only say a few lines that don't have deeper meaning then stuff like "my body was a canvas and you were the artist" LMAO. the sentiments, for the most part are sweet but way too overused and come off as cringe. imo someone has to possess a deep love for literature and a certain intellect to be able to write REAL poetry (as well as literature in general) and not many people have this gift, especially not celebrities. they need to stop being rupi khar copycats (keep in mind she is somewhat controversial but imo is what started this train of bad poetry) and stay in their own lane.
edit ; i'm in NO WAY gatekeeping art and i miss-worded how it can be a gift. yes, people can be born with it, but people can also work hard to be successful with things like poetry as well.
Legitimately, I wrote better poetry in high school English class.
I'm a celebrity and this is deep
While I agree with the sentiment, I just take a bit issue with saying real poetry. There is certainly bad poetry, but as someone who is working to be a better writer. I think we need to make room for bad poetry to be real poetry so beginning poets and writers, like myself, have that room to make messy, bad poetry and stories on order to grow and these can be used to grow which is why I enjoy these videos. Anyways I hope this makes sense and I appreciate your comment.
its true because i used to write poetry like that and i thought i was so deep lol...
(Hi, I'm someone who was your age when I started writing poetry, and I've since been... moderately involved in the poetry world. Published, edited, no full collection of my own, I'm only in my early 20s, but yeah, I just wanted to add my thoughts because this comment REALLY made me feel like I was seeing 15-year-old me, lol)
I don't really think of writing as anyone's "gift", because in my experience it just takes a hell of a lot of doing and failing to create your own style and actually understand the workings of literature, poetry, or any kind of art.
All jokes aside, these celebrity poets would do really great on wattpad.
OMFG THIS IS AACTUALLY FUNNY

Could you review Halsey's poetry book "I would leave me if I could"? I would really love to know what you have to say about it.
a great celebrity poetry book is 'I Would Leave Me If I Could." By Halsey.
Halsey has been preparing for her book her entire life, gabbi, lili etc started when they got a book deal, that’s very clear I think.

can i just say, completely unironically and genuinely, im glad you dont edit out your little moments with kira, even when she's making dog sounds. they make me very happy
When I felt down, you would always say, ‘You are my treasure, my darling, but you would be better if you had gold in your veins.’
For days and months I refused as I knew what it entailed.
That was really beautyful!

I’ll try to evaluate my comments before posting in the future.
I think the issue that both Lili Reinhart and Gabbie Hanna both had is that they labeled their “creative journal entries” poetry.
since she's an actor and very well known, she has more of an audience out there for her book. unfortunately for those who have little followers or a knowing in the category of 'popularity' their books are not given much praise towards. it's truly disappointing to those who understand and put their heart and soul into their craft.
If you had a university course in poetry, I would take that IN A HEARTBEAT!! I could listen to you for hours!
"it's tough, being a dog, to make your voice feel heard" ... damn Kyra.... T_T

Sometimes I wonder if you put more effort in analyzing why these poems are bad then the people writing them trying to make them good lmaoo
Very likely 😂
That is exactly the case.
Gave a quick go at expanding the "poem" about the shades. Still very bad, and underdeveloped, but it was so much wasted potential it hurts.
I loved you for every colour you were
The pale pink of your cheeks, as you kissed me for the first time and
The yellow of the flower you poked behind my ear, wet with raindrops and dew
The green that we grew, through the mud,
The beige of that old sofa, you pushed through the creaky door way of our new house, when it was first new,
and not old.
For these were, and still are, the colours of love.
Not only those, but, I will love you in every colour
The hot red of your anger, burning beneath your eyes
The blues of your soul, hollowed out from your chest,
to give to me and
The purple of the first bruise upon a cheek, the busted lip from a mouth that had hurt me with mere words,
for even these, are the colours of love.
Not only those, but I will love you in every shade
The bright milky whites of your good days, sun shining on our bed sheets, and the way you take your coffee, I know and
The greys, oh, the greys, in your eyes, it is the shade with which I compare everything else, as you, are balance.
Most of all, I will love you, you, all mixed up,
and messy, but smiling anyway,
because you, and everything you are
is the colour of love.

I’m a creative writing student, and I’m so glad you’re ripping into these celeb poems.
It’s frustrating watching my peers write fantastic and original poetry and never have a chance to be published, meanwhile these celebs write a few unpublished tweets and gain praise.
But they can they can post the poetry
It's your videos dissecting bad poetry and why it doesn't work that is the best inspiration for me to keep writing my poetry. I don't know what it is, but something about hearing someone else who loves poetry talk about what works and what doesn't gives me so many ideas I want to go down, phrases just pour out of me. I'm sorry that you've been getting more and more frustrated by all the bad poetry you've endured for us, but to me at least, it's greatly appreciated.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how soft and pretty Rachel's make-up is in this video?😭
"the tone of 'i can't write'" LMAO
Honestly, all these "instagram poems" go on the "I'm 14 and this is deep" subreddit.
There's a finite amount of resources a publisher has, so it follows that there's a finite amount of people that can get publish.
Agree with the above, and also publishing is business. They cant just publish whatever they want if not enough people will buy it
@@josie8997 i think i disagree because chances are if a publisher sees potential and really wants to publish you, they will.
@@kaitlinberanek4539 yes and i completely agree that that's really sad but again, it's not really anyones fault (other than the consumer maybe).
Wise words!!! Thank you
