I loved it in high school but it was awkward at times...like long technical dialogue about mitochondria with no music; running around shooting at bats with a m16 in the middle of central park. You can tell it was the graphical base model for FF8 though, which was much smoother.
The two first (and IMO, best) Legacy of Kain games, Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, are still fantastic to this day. In fact, Blood Omen was recently (finally) released on GOG, and I bought it day one and played it through one more time. And it was every bit as awesome as it was 25+ years ago.
Didn't play Blood Omen, but Soul Reaver was definitely visually appealing. I remember shifting between realms in one area looking so amazing, you could tell it was really pushing the hardware as the frame rate did drop significantly. Also, the way the world was modeled and textured was brilliant, allowing its traversal not to be interrupted by loading screens.
*Final Fantasy IX* has aged beautifully. To this day, it holds up better than the other two (VII, and VIII), though they are fine games. *Street Fighter Alpha 3* is still an excellent port of the arcade original. While we can get arcade perfect versions, now, the PS1 version is still very well done. *Final Fantasy Tactics* is still the yardstick by which all other strategy RPGs are measured. We desperately need a remaster, or at least a port, of this brilliant game. *Klonoa* is every bit the equal of Tomba, in terms of exciting 2D style platforming. It is utterly charming, quite colorful, and an absolute blast to play. *Lunar Silver Star Story Complete* and *Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete* (boy, that’s certainly a mouthful) are two amazing RPGs that time seems to have forgotten. The 2D art is quite lovely, while the story and music tell two gripping tales of adventure. The anime cutscene’s are still beautiful and everything in these games gives the player a true sense of reward upon completion. *Valkyrie Profile* . This was a very unique game that touched on Nordic mythology at a time when few games bothered with the subject. The graphics were outstanding, as were the game play and battles. This is one for the ages. These are a few that deserve to be on a list like yours. Thank you for your lovely trip down memory lane.

Unfortunately my taste in games changed a lot over the years and I only really enjoyed FF7, but their graphics, soundtracks, and concept art will always have a place in my heart.
The thing with CC is that there's NO RPG like it. Like, with other games like the FF entries, Suikoden, the SaGas, they are great but not precisely unique, but CC just plays so different, their ideas are so radically different...that's why it wasn't as well received at first as a sequel for CT, but it has gained a following over time. Absolute masterpiece.
Beautiful list, and it healed my soul a little to get a Tomba reference in 2024. That said, I feel like this list is missing Alundra, a genuinely hidden gem and masterpiece I would recommend to anyone.
Should have mentioned all of the classic Tomb Raider games, from 1 to 5. They are still excellent games, even better than some current ones, and I still played them to this day.
Yeah. PGXP for perspective and texture corrections, and the best anti-aliasing anyone could ask for at 240p. Also CPU overclocking for better fps. Thanks goodness. I can't ever go back to a real PS1.
@@FireWyreVideo None. The best ones are free. I recommend either DuckStation (standalone version) for PC or SwanStation (RetroArch core) for PC and modern smartphones / tablets. The only emulator I've ever bought is ePSXe and, these days, I pay it no attention at all.
Great selection and video. I vote Tomb Raider 4, as its kind of the swansong for a certain kind of 3rd person adventure game that you don't see anymore. You have to do all the work and set up the jumps and vaults whereas a newer ps3 or 4 era game would have you just holding the action button and going in a direction doing fancy parkour stuff. Beautiful scenery and levels like in the earlier games but with better graphics and more fluid gameplay to back it up.
The Gex trilogy! Hey! We all have our favorites, and sweet memories for those of us that were kiddos and also going into our teenage years playing the PS1 games.
@@fourwingsweepa1705 Yeah same.. I was a Final Fantasy devotee by the time Chrono Trigger came out though. So I never got that into Chrono Trigger like a lot of people did. But when Chrono Cross hit, just the vast number of playable characters appealed to me. That and I love the character Harle. She just makes me laugh.
@@fourwingsweepa1705 Me too but only for a little while. 3D loading battles take forever. Its another reason why i didnt like ff9. Loading time takes forever.
EInhander was a great game that went a bit under the radar in It's time. A side scrolling shooter reminiscent of Gradius, Einhader had a badass soundtrack, great visuals and solid gameplay. 10/10 will play again... right now actually, before I go to bed.
Suikoden II is still one of my favorite games of all time. Sadly my copy was so damaged that it always just crashed as soon as I got the fortress - wich you forgot to mention as it is one of the reasons why the game is so fun, watching the headquarter and your army build up over time. I tried to play it over and over again anyway in hopes that it maybe doesn't crash this time until one day I just had to accept the fact that I can't play it anymore.
Skullmonkeys, Valkyrie Profile, Resident Evil Nemesis, Mega Man Legends, FF8 and 9, Dino Crisis, Medievil, Parasite Eve... I can't think of any more that have aged amazingly well at the moment. Akuji and Gex Enter the Gecko are two I love personally but people may dislike. Vagrant Story I could never finish.
You missed Valkyrie Profile, arguably one of the absolute BEST PS1 games and still fantastic to this very day. Warning: the game will break your heart and make you cry if you have even a shred of empathy left in your heart.
3:00 So kind of you to assume that I'm married now. Even though I'm so old that I remember those games when they were new and loved some of them. Knock on wood!
Valkyrie Profile is the best for me, i replay it every new years eve. This year they actually made a "remaster" for PS5, but the only change is apparently resolution and some graphics.
Some excellent games on here. Personally, 10 games that hold up well from this era for me are : Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Tombi, Tomb Raider, Silent Bomber, Tekken 3, Civilization 2, Colin McRae Rally 2.0, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Rugrats : The Search For Reptar 10 that I think don't hold up particularly well, would include : Dino Crisis, Resident Evil, Syphon Filter, Spider-Man, Tony Hawk's Skateboarding, Ape Escape, Crash Bandicoot 1, Tenchu, Die Hard Trilogy, Twisted Metal
Metal Gear Solid was released on the Playstation as a chance for Konami and Hideo Kojima to test out the console 3D graphic capabilities and it have been a technical demo each of the console generations (Playstation 2 has the Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, PS3 has the Metal Gear Solid 4, and PS4 has both the Metal Gear 5: Ground Zero and The Phantom Pain, and the controversial Metal Gear Survive). The Playstation release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was meant to address the limitation from the Sega Saturn release (Problem with fog transparency and rendering 3D model) but it was rushed and has a different content from the Sega Saturn version (Underground Garden, 2 familiars, and Maria mode was excluded). Some of these were included in the PSP version as Dracula X Chronicles as an unlockable.
I learnt english at 11 playing crono cross. I used to sit in front of the tv with an english dictionary and searched word by word every dialogue because I loved the game, still beautiful game. Blessings🙏
Oh wow, I also learned a lot of english by just playing videogames lol, but I started much younger because ALL my games were in english, I was basically learning to read my own language and english at the same time
Unreal emulating the look of a camera is really interesting, especially with how they frame it in their documentation as "realism". The way emissive materials clip to white "being an improvement" to the shader is kinda funny.
Some titles that I feel should have been mentioned too: Driver: You are the Wheelman. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Resident Evil 2. Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2. Vagrant Story. Colin McRae Rally 2.0.
I bought my loose copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night at GameStop just before I graduated from high school. This was 20 years ago. I'm so lucky to have the game at all. Don't really care about having a complete copy since I just wanted to play the game. If the early '80s were the Golden Age of gaming, the '90s were the Platinum Age.
Yes! Mega Man X4 is my favorite Mega man game of all time! I love it.MGS was also amazing and still is. I replay SOTN almost yearly. I would add FF7 and Final Fantasy Tactics are both still great.

I love the PS1 era. I miss never to worry about day one patch
Great list bro
Between the SNES and PS1, there's so many titles that still hold up even today in my opinion they are my top two favorite systems to date.
Should have mentioned all of the classic Tomb Raider games, from 1 to 5. They are still excellent games, even better than some current ones, and I still played them to this day.
the controls were really clunky compared to modern games from what i remember. that was my first ps1 game and it was groundbreaking at the time
Valkyrie Profile is another RPG that is just perfect even today
Thank goodness for emulators
Yeah. PGXP for perspective and texture corrections, and the best anti-aliasing anyone could ask for at 240p. Also CPU overclocking for better fps. Thanks goodness. I can't ever go back to a real PS1.
@@MetalJody1990what is the best emulator to buy these days?
@@FireWyreVideo None. The best ones are free. I recommend either DuckStation (standalone version) for PC or SwanStation (RetroArch core) for PC and modern smartphones / tablets.
The only emulator I've ever bought is ePSXe and, these days, I pay it no attention at all.
Sad to not see Spyro make the cut! Still my favorite games of the era and still effortlessly fun today.
Valkyrie Profile!
"Come to me, dark warriors, battle awaits us!"
"To my side, my noble Einherjar!"
Here are some PS1 games that were way, way ahead of their time: th-cam.com/video/RGaCX-nwDwY/w-d-xo.html
I was hoping to see Resident Evil and Final Fantasy sagas here.
Resident Evil 1-3 are classic ps1 games that aged beatifully
Great selection and video. I vote Tomb Raider 4, as its kind of the swansong for a certain kind of 3rd person adventure game that you don't see anymore. You have to do all the work and set up the jumps and vaults whereas a newer ps3 or 4 era game would have you just holding the action button and going in a direction doing fancy parkour stuff. Beautiful scenery and levels like in the earlier games but with better graphics and more fluid gameplay to back it up.
Abe's Odysee and Exodus are the best looking games for the PS1 in my opinion. They look better than their recent remakes... by far.
Paul was my favorite Tekken character, so it was great to see him showcased in the video.
The Gex trilogy! Hey! We all have our favorites, and sweet memories for those of us that were kiddos and also going into our teenage years playing the PS1 games.
Chrono Cross is so underrated. I get it’s not Chrono Trigger, but what is?
I liked cross better than trigger for some reason
@@fourwingsweepa1705 Yeah same.. I was a Final Fantasy devotee by the time Chrono Trigger came out though. So I never got that into Chrono Trigger like a lot of people did.
But when Chrono Cross hit, just the vast number of playable characters appealed to me. That and I love the character Harle. She just makes me laugh.
@@fourwingsweepa1705 Me too but only for a little while. 3D loading battles take forever. Its another reason why i didnt like ff9. Loading time takes forever.
I still love tenchu stealth assassin
i have to put my vote in vagrant story as one of the best looking games for ps1
EInhander was a great game that went a bit under the radar in It's time. A side scrolling shooter reminiscent of Gradius, Einhader had a badass soundtrack, great visuals and solid gameplay. 10/10 will play again... right now actually, before I go to bed.
The boss theme makes me feel like dancing 😂
For Suikoden 2, do I need to ply the first one? Or does it have its own story?
Glad to see suikoden 2 here, one of the best Jrpgs ive ever played. Love the sprite work and art style as well.
Thanks brother, very good video
Tomba! was so lit
Love every praise I see for suikoden in media creators. One of my favorite games ever!
Valkyrie Profile is the best for me, i replay it every new years eve. This year they actually made a "remaster" for PS5, but the only change is apparently resolution and some graphics.
Megaman X4 was my childhood. I'm happy to see it on the list.
To this day I still play the ridge racer revolution bonus disc that came with R4. It was 60 fps and played great
Great list. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and 4 should be here too
Some excellent games on here. Personally, 10 games that hold up well from this era for me are : Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Tombi, Tomb Raider, Silent Bomber, Tekken 3, Civilization 2, Colin McRae Rally 2.0, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Rugrats : The Search For Reptar
10 that I think don't hold up particularly well, would include : Dino Crisis, Resident Evil, Syphon Filter, Spider-Man, Tony Hawk's Skateboarding, Ape Escape, Crash Bandicoot 1, Tenchu, Die Hard Trilogy, Twisted Metal
Devil dice was frantic two player puzzle fun and still holds up today.
As my screen name implies, I still play all these and am starting to feature them. I even have a 30" CRT TV just for this. 🤣
I can't believe that I forget about Tekken 3! I loved that game.
I learnt english at 11 playing crono cross. I used to sit in front of the tv with an english dictionary and searched word by word every dialogue because I loved the game, still beautiful game. Blessings🙏
Oh wow, I also learned a lot of english by just playing videogames lol, but I started much younger because ALL my games were in english, I was basically learning to read my own language and english at the same time
No Parasite Eve 2? It's literally one of the best looking games of the PS1 era.
Truly amazing
Unreal emulating the look of a camera is really interesting, especially with how they frame it in their documentation as "realism". The way emissive materials clip to white "being an improvement" to the shader is kinda funny.
Some titles that I feel should have been mentioned too:
Driver: You are the Wheelman.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.
Resident Evil 2.
Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.
Vagrant Story.
Colin McRae Rally 2.0.
Whats the submarine game in the intro ? metal slug?
I bought my loose copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night at GameStop just before I graduated from high school. This was 20 years ago. I'm so lucky to have the game at all. Don't really care about having a complete copy since I just wanted to play the game.
If the early '80s were the Golden Age of gaming, the '90s were the Platinum Age.
SoTN having so many secrets that til this day is still a nice topic to share.
Yes! Mega Man X4 is my favorite Mega man game of all time! I love it.MGS was also amazing and still is. I replay SOTN almost yearly. I would add FF7 and Final Fantasy Tactics are both still great.
